National Enquirer Wants Pulitzer for Reporting on Edwards' Affair

I bet you never thought this day would come. No, not the day when John Edwards admits he's the baby daddy -- we all saw that one coming, but the day when the National Enquirer would be edging for a Pulitzer.

The Washington Post reported:

The executive editor of the National Enquirer says he plans to enter his paper's work on the John Edwards scandal for a Pulitzer Prize.

Since when does the paper which is the laughing stock of the check out line get to be considered serious reporting? Well, I guess now. By some anyway.

"It's clear we should be a contender for this," Barry Levine said by phone Thursday, hours after the former presidential candidate admitted what the paper had been reporting all along: that he is the father of Rielle Hunter's baby. "The National Enquirer, a supermarket tabloid, was able to publish this reporting."

And the Post concedes: "There is no question that the tabloid scooped the rest of the media world."

This may be what they mean by the end of journalism.
