15 Awful Things Republicans Would Do If They Had the Chance
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest headlines via email.
Always the political instrument of moneyed elites, and a retrograde societal force, the GOP today is more negatively impactful than ever. Its agenda, if fully implemented, would prove catastrophic. Here's what an unfettered Republican Party would do "for" America:
1) Greatly reduce or entirely eliminate taxes on the rich, thereby forcing hard-pressed working families to painfully make up resulting revenue shortfalls.
2) Bust labor unions, cruelly preventing the collective bargaining that's the key reason why US workers ever won decent wages and benefits.
3) Stubbornly deny the existence of ominous climate change while blithely pumping more pollutants into the environment from lucrative, dirty industries and practices. Although reputable scientists say 350 carbon parts per atmospheric million is the safe limit for sustained life on Earth, Republicans dismiss the frightening fact that we're already at a carbon level of roughly 390 ppm.
4) Remove "restrictive" regulations on everything from investment banks and credit card companies to a broad array of "profit-eroding" consumer protections, leaving the American masses exposed to a host of resulting abuses and dangers.
5) Continue to criticize and insufficiently fund public education, advocating private schooling instead, thus entirely ignoring that progressive public systems are used in every country that has education outcomes superior to our own.
6) Outlaw abortion, under a fraudulently moral guise, compelling the US to bloodily join those benighted, backward nations where thousands of already-born, living, breathing, socially functioning females perish because of sexist denials of their basic reproductive rights.
7) Continue to recite a Pledge of Allegiance whose last six words are "with liberty and justice for all," while remaining numbly oblivious to the harsh hypocrisy of preventing our homosexual citizens from marrying.
8) Speak often and loftily of freedom, but engage in secret wiretapping, repression of domestic dissent, neo-McCarthyite witch hunts, Red-baiting name calling, and a panoply of Patriot Act transgressions against the Constitution of the United States...all under the misused rubric of "national security."
9) Show the rest of humankind nothing but bullying world-cop arrogance through endless US interventions and aggressions on foreign soil, resulting not just in countless lives extinguished in indefensible wars, and billions of badly-needed dollars flushed down the drain, but constant al Qaeda recruitment against hated Yankee interlopers.
10) Generally drive down the income levels of America's working-class majority, as a purported cost-saving corporate measure, without appreciating that a populace that's too poor to buy back what society produces is doomed to economic ruin. A living wage is the ultimate "stimulus," but try to find even one Republican who favors it!
11) Continue to lie about the alternative, affordable health care for all that some fifty world nations' people overwhelmingly support, thereby propagandistically leading Americans to think that having private insurance whose premiums are rising at rates three times higher than our pay -- and which routinely denies coverage when it's required most -- is somehow preferable
12) Unleash de facto ethnic cleansing against 12 million immigrant men, women, and children, making them contemporary equivalents of the Jewish scapegoats that Hitler blamed for hardships Germans experienced during a prior period of capitalist economic distress.
13) Shamefully try to lend credence to their avarice and social irresponsibility by revising the Bible to obscure passages that place human need before abject greed, attempting to turn it into a facilitating guide for modern peers of the temple moneychangers whose tables Jesus angrily knocked to the floor (and who undoubtedly wouldn't be mentioned in the amended version that one conservative group is actually, amazingly trying to put into circulation).
14) Give full vent to the intensely bigoted hatred that has crazed extremists dreaming of literally tearing Barack Obama to pieces and gassing all liberals...if only they could.
15) Place the livelihoods and lives of over 300 million Americans in the hands of incompetent ideological "purists" such as Sarah Palin.
While there are certainly Democrats who've yet to show spine in furtherance of vital change, let's be absolutely clear about the unmitigated disaster that would follow if Republicans, in their present ultra-rightist incarnation, ruled our country exactly as they wickedly wished.

Bush and his gang and all the Republicans for 8 yards did nothing to stop them from coming. They want people here that no one cares about for they can pay them next to nothing.
But he did build those concentration camps that Halliburton said that they build in the middle of the desert for someone.

In a short while the US will resemble Tsarist Russia before the revolution. An oligarchic system has nothing to do with democracy, unless the great majority of people is constantly fooled by special interest groups.
In the end, values and social issues is all that matters to some. The economy and the rights of the working man are insignificant, compared to the debate on abortion. And to say that it could all be so simple; if you don't want an abortion, don't have one,and start minding your own business.

Another way to approach it is to imagine what things would be like if the Republicans had stayed in power in 2006--say, through a terror attack, a sudden drop in IQs, or a new generation of vote-flipping software.
We wouldn't even be talking about global climate change, health care reform, re-regulating the corporations, etc., etc.
Our wounded vets would still be lying around in their own urine--and no one would know. You wouldn't be reading this, because the internet would be gone.

So the real point is a government without checks will be a bad government, as we now see!
for the benefit of everyone lets hope we gain some more balance in the government in the next election with more independents playing a larger role!

By urging Rove and the Judiciary Committee to reach a settlement, Obama’s Justice Department lawyers avoided going to federal court and taking a position on Bush’s broad claims of executive privilege, which the former president said extended beyond his presidency.
“The President is very sympathetic to those who want to find out what happened,” Craig said in early March just as a deal to secure Rove and Miers’ testimony was reached. “But he is also mindful as President of the United States not to do anything that would undermine or weaken the institution of the presidency.
There is a basic flaw in Obama's argument, it is not his job to protect the presidency, it is his job to protect the constitution. If he continues on this path, it is treason and he should be impeached.

Don’t Let Abortion Destroy Health Care Reform
How much muscle will the bishops now put behind the broader effort to pass health care reform? Their credibility as advocates for social justice hangs in the balance.
E.J. is right about their credibility, I want to ask those bishops why they support war against Muslims.
The truth is that even with the Stupak restrictions, health care reform would leave millions of Americans far better off than they are now—including millions of women. This skirmish over abortion cannot be allowed to destroy the opportunity to extend coverage to 35 million Americans. Killing health care reform would be bad for choice, and very bad for the right to life.
E.J. Dionne’s e-mail address is ejdionne(at)washpost.com.
The Truthdig comments are running very strongly against him. He really stirred some people up. I don't think the right-to-lifers know what they have done.
Women are PISSED, I think next they will be thinking about GETTING EVEN.

Why don't they just rename themselves the "Tea Party" and be done with it?
When the grand old party was handed over to the lunatic fringe of American politics at their convention in the summer of 1964, it was only a matter of time before it was destroyed from within. Who would have thought it would take forty-five years for that to happen? Better late than ever, I suppose - but DAMN! Did they have to take the rest of us down with them?
In his column in Monday's New York Times, the usually astute Paul Krugman ended that morning's piece with this rare (for him) clunker:
"The point is that the takeover of the Republican Party by the irrational right is no laughing matter. Something unprecedented is happening here - and it's very bad for America."
No, Paul! BAD PAUL! What is happening here is very good for America! Can't you see? The Republican Party - the party of Strom Thurmond, Jerry Fallwell, Jesse Helms and Ronald Reagan - IS IN THE PROCESS OF COMMITTING SUICIDE! There is no other way to describe what is now happening to them! Paul Krugman, I admire you as much as any writer I can think of - but you must understand that this will not be "very bad for America". Trust me on this one, okay? Good Paul!
A party by any other name....

Next week comes the other, Aunt Demmy, who looks at the credit card bill and gasps and says we all need to work together to pay down the debt, and that means no ice cream for us! :(
The following week Aunt Reppy returns, and she is very happy to see the credit card all paid off, so it's another new car and another trip to the ice cream shop! (and the jewellers and furriers...) And on the way Aunt Reppy reminds us who is the fun aunt and who makes us work and sacrifice to pay off our debts.
I hate Aunt Demmy. Aunt Reppy is cool! Ow, my tooth hurts and I feel sick.

EVIL!
Authoritarianism, especially if only for the wealthy at the expense of the downtrodden, is evil, period.
The Republicans' only purpose is to be an impediment to all that is good.
My prediction, though, is that Obama will be a 1-term president, and Sarah Palin (or somebody even worse) will be "elected" in 2012.
Some say the end of the world will be in 2012. But I think it will instead be in early 2013, right after the Republican president puts us all out of our misery by starting a full-scale nuclear war.
Sadly, this scenario is all too possible, in my opinion.

Back to the good old Nixon-Reagan days - and more.
In fact, let's repeal the Civil Rights Act, which is what Rush, Beck and Hannity really want to do.
Let's not stop there.
No more lawsuits against corporations. Buyer beware.
No more bankruptcies (go to paupers prison).
No regulations for the corporations, just laws to keep the people from harassing companies.
A Republican wet dream.
What a Rush!

No. 17 Put all Social Security receipts into the Wall $treet casino.
No. 18 $ellect JEB! (Bush) ass president in 2012. Whoa! President JEB? Give that some thought.
No. 19 Bomb the Islamic REPUBLIC of Iran in the name of Jeeezass!
No. 20 Give more money and $upport for the bigoted, racist, sexist apartheid policies of Zionist fundamentalist wackos in the theocrazy of Israel. Sorry. They are what they are!
No. 21 Declare the United $tates (of Perpetual War Profiteering) to be a KKKristian nation.
No. 22 Enforce KKKristian prayers in public $chool.
No. 23 Privatize everything... especially public beaches and all municipal sewer systems.
No. 24 Corp-ratize the prisons for the $ake of $lave labour.
No. 25 Manditory death penalty for pot smokers... and all flag burners.
Heck! I could go on forever about the Neanderthal neocon nuts in the Republican party.
Needless to say... I'm no big fan of Democrat-rats... but VOTING FOR A REPUBLICAN IS LIKE VOTING FOR $OMEBODY TO CUT YOUR THROAT.

"The real agenda of this movement is not to give rights to animals, but to take rights from people—to dictate our food, clothing, work, recreation, and whether we will discover new medications or die."
Identical assertions could have been made about the abolition of human slavery, the crusade to end child labor, the liberation of concentration camp prisoners from Nazi physicians or an end to the experimentation upon black humans by white humans.
Marquardt writes that the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) "now encourages vegetarianism, the banning of fur, and the eventual end to all animal research, not just ‘cruel’ animal research." Marquardt writes that the Humane Society now supports vegetarianism.
According to Marquardt, "The typical animal rights activist is a white woman making about $30,000 a year. She is most likely a schoolteacher, nurse, or government worker. She usually has a college degree or even an advanced degree, is in her thirties or forties, and lives in a city."
Marquardt cites studies indicating that animal rights activists tend to identify with liberal causes such as feminism and environmentalism. "Every year," writes the Reverend Andrew Linzey, author of Christianity and the Rights of Animals, "I receive hundreds of anguished letters from Christians who are so distressed by the insensitivity to animals shown by mainstream churches that they have left them or are on the verge of doing so." It is not surprising, therefore, that Marquardt reports that "Most activists share a bias against Western civilization and its Judeo-Christian foundations."
According to Marquardt, the "political clout" of the animal rights movement "is surprisingly bipartisan. But most of the leading politicians working with the animal rights movement are liberal Democrats." Marquardt mentions Senator Barbara Boxer of California, Nevada Congressman Jim Bilbray, Charlie Rose of North Carolina, Tom Lantos and Gerry Studds.
Marquardt admits, however, that "some Republicans are animal rightists, too. Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole of Kansas often supports animal rights causes—except, of course, those pertaining to cattle, a major business in Kansas. Senator Robert Smith of New Hampshire was a founder of the Congressional Friends of Animals. Bob Dornan of California, one of the most conservative House members, is an animal rights advocate—he cosponsored legislation banning the use of animals in testing cosmetics and received a PETA award. And Manhattan Congressman Bill Green promoted legislation that would have shut down over 90 million acres of federal land to hunting, fishing, and trapping."
Marquardt states further that "Although he’s not an elected official, a conservative political figure who, surprisingly, is on the other side is G. Gordon Liddy, author Will and a key figure in the 1972 Watergate uproar. When I went on Liddy’s radio show, he and PETA’s Ingrid Newkirk greeted each other with hugs and kisses and lots of warm words.
"With allies in both political parties and across the ideological spectrum," concludes Marquardt, "the animal rights movement has been able to score some great successes, regardless of which party controls the White House or Capitol Hill."

We cannot afford either anymore and they have pretty much cooked their goose.
This the New World Century requiring a view and respect for world wide interdependence and learning to live within the means of our planet. It will require population control and zero growth not ideological dogmas formulas. A world that is not a human anthill of starvation and poverty and over-population.

1. Because republicans are elected and dig us into a hole.
2. When the democrats get elected, and try to dig us OUT of that hole, people complain the dems aren't helping, that they're just throwing dirt on them while trying to dig, so...
3. We elect the republicans again, and they dig us even deeper.
Eight steps backwards, four steps forward, then back eight more steps.
This retrogression needs to stop.
America, the world's badass teenager, needs to grow up and start acting like a responsible country, instead of a spoiled, entitled adolescent brat.
We need to support local communities, and at the same time, encourage scientific advancement.
We need to instigate medicine that benefits all, and at the same time, heavily tax the wealthy, who can afford it more.
Stepping on the poor and calling it progress because you have millions and they have nothing is NOT nation building. It's unsustainable.
None of us win unless all of us win, and they say a society can be judged by how it treats its lowest members. I think, if there is a god, he's not too happy with what the rich (and the conservative middle classes who are sympathetic towards the rich) are doing.

Need I remind my fellow lefty liberals that Bill Clinton's most lasting legacy is George W. Bush? That Democrat officials in black-dominated, white-controlled counties in Georgia, Tennessee and Illinois threw out more than enough black votes to elect Al Gore?
Just when, exactly, is Obama planning on closing Gitmo?
When is Obama, who seems to have written off the Middle East as a major policy arena (for this term), planning to start treating the Palestinians as fully human, and start demanding Israel close the illegal settlement blocks NOW? Obama can't even refer to them as "settlement blocks", instead of settlements, which suggests quaint rural kibbutz'.
Why does Iran have to submit to nuclear inspectors when Israel doesn't even have to admit it has a bomb?
When is Obama going to start using his "legendary" communication skills to start helping Americans to understand that most of what they think they know about the Middle East is pretty much false, and they don't know very much at all?
How far back do the problems of the Middle East go? 2000 years, or to 1919?
And while we're considering the fact that there never was a Palestine, how many people who consider themselves Jewish are actually Jewish, that is to say, descendants of Abraham... Nothing we think we know about the Middle East is what we think it is, and yet, we blindly support Israel. After all, the day after Obama won the Democrat's nomination he ran off to kow-tow to AIPAC: What sort of "Change We Can Believe In" was that?
When is Obama going to start the programs that will jump start the tech industries that can export global cooling/clean up technology to the world, and create lasting, well paying jobs at home? Solving global warming isn't about hampering Chinese or Indian development, it's all about changing the way we live, produce, and consume, and the US could be a leader in that industrial revolution--or we could get left behind as we debate silly policies that try to keep our life (and corporate profits) just as it is.
When is Obama going to call for a national program to create comprehensive mass transit in every major urban area? And when is Obama going to come out against zoning laws and "planning" policies that encourage car-forward development and urban sprawl?
When is Obama going to start working to improve the education of ALL American children, and to stop letting a parents income determine the quality of their child's education? When is Obama going to start talking to Americans about how a good education for everyone benefits everyone, instead of letting the Republicans control the debate (to the extent there is one) which always leaves the shiny white kids in the upper strata being raised to take the reins of power while the mostly darker kids of the lower strata are handed the gutter and a broom with no bristles?
It's a nice diversion to attack the GOP and heaven knows they deserve it, but now our guy's in power, and I notice that way too many people are making excuses as to why they aren't demanding more of him, and why they're allowing him to slide as far as he has. FDR only became FDR because he was forced to act, forced to do the right thing, and even then he still managed to find the most expedient path available.
If we don't start to push Obama soon, Obama's greatest legacy may well be something far worse than 8 years of George W Bush, and if you think that's impossible, you need to wake up. The time for bashing the GOP has passed. Our guy is in power, and he's not living up to the expectations the voters placed upon him. Either we start to take responsibility and push him where he needs to go, or we shut up and get out the vaseline.

in either case..barring some miracle..voters will elect a far right-wing govt in 2010 and 2012..that will be much more virulent than bu$hco ever was.. and i have some doubts as to whether the country could survive that...

According to Newsday.com, the first medical workers on the scene described the victim’s injuries as “nightmarish,” saying that “her hands looked like they were wrecked by a machine. Eyes wounded, hair yanked out. Face and scalp injuries so extensive, all the blood obscured whatever parts were left.” They found the woman lying in the driveway and were unable to determine if the victim was male or female. They had to warn dispatchers that the victim’s face was ripped away.

You are part of a suicide cult...I don't mind if you kill yourself, but could you please go someplace else and do it?
The only difference between you godless dipshits and Jihadists, is the way you dress.
A nation that will not fight back in the face of evil seals its fate. Those who twist logic to find excuses for terrorists or their supporters have lost a survival instinct. Liberalism, as it's mutated since the end of World War II, is a cult that preaches national suicide. Don Feder, the week after 911

Allahu Akbar!
