CNN Can't Have It Both Ways: It Can Either Broadcast Hateful Lou Dobbs or Have a Latino Audience
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest headlines via email.
As CNN begins broadcasting its Latino in America series -- its most important and expensive attempt to capture Latino audiences -- Latinos are of one mind about the two faces of CNN.
I know this because I just spent the last two weeks traveling the country talking to Latino communities about Lou Dobbs and CNN. I got to meet some of the more than 50,000 people who, in just the last four weeks, have signed our petition at bastadobbs.com.
What I heard among the many voices that make up the Latino United States -- Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in New York, Cubans in Miami, Mexicans and Salvadorans and many others in the Southwest -- was an unexpected unity and an intense concern about CNN's Latino hypocrisy: Thinking that a few hours of serious reporting on Latinos by sunny Soledad O'Brien can make up for thousands of hours of anti-Latino extremism from the dark Lou Dobbs.
This paradox has Latinos everywhere asking questions about CNN -- and so far we haven't gotten much in the way of answers.
One questioner was Latino media executive Jeff Valdez, who, during the Los Angeles screening of the series, pointedly asked O'Brien, "Will Latino in America include Lou Dobbs?" The answer: no. That's right, four hours about the Latino experience in the U.S., and not a word on the country's most notorious anti-immigrant, anti-Latino "news" anchor.
"What do you think Latinos should do about Lou Dobbs?" asked another member of the audience. Obrien's response -- that we should watch and support positive depictions of Latinos like those of LIA -- satisfied no one; neither do the rumors that Dobbs has started talking to Fox News about leaving CNN.
At the New York screening of LIA, an audience member asked about how CNN squares Latino in America with the hatred that shows up on Dobbs' show every night. Visibly irritated by having to defend CNN because of Dobbs, a CNN executive answered, "I have nothing to do with Lou Dobbs. I don't confer with Lou Dobbs. He has not seen this program. My unit has no contact at all. So I don't answer that. I don't have an answer for it."
This, in a nutshell, is the CNN position: When the question is about Dobbs, they have no answer.
Such questions by and about Latinos form part of a larger dialogue that will be at the center of this week's immigration-reform mobilizations, as well as in CNN's LIA premiere next week.
At a time when polls indicate Latinos experiencing increased levels of discrimination -- a time when hate crimes against Latinos are on the rise -- Dobbs' war on immigrants and Latinos occupies a central place in the hearts and questions of Latinos. People are noticing CNN's attempt to have its Dobbs cake and have Latinos eat it too.
Among the most creative and committed to bringing CNN's hypocrisy into the national dialogue about Latinos is 26-year-old Mexican immigrant Arturo Perez, an award-winning filmmaker, who just produced an inspired and inspiring video about CNN's Dobbs problem.
The fantastic film was born during dinner-table dialogues about Dobbs that a teenaged Perez and his mother held over the course of many years. These dialogues are now taking place in thousands of bilingual households throughout the country.
"We would listen to Lou Dobbs, and my mom and I would get very upset," Perez told me. "Ever since I was a teenager, I got so angry that I sent Dobbs and CNN many e-mails correcting his 'facts' and warning them about the dangers of the kind of lies and hate he spread about Latinos. He never wrote me back. So, now I get to talk to him through my video."
Latinos, it seems, are clearer than ever that, thanks to Dobbs, watching CNN has become an exercise in disrespecting ourselves and denying our dignity.
Of all the questions I heard in my travels, one sums up the issue better than all the rest: "Does CNN really believe that they can have it both ways?" asked Guadalupe Vazquez, a Mexican immigrant, who lives not far from CNN's headquarters in Atlanta.
"They're trying to make money by reporting on us (Latinos) with this (Latino in America) show and with CNN en Espanol at the same time as they're making money off of hating us with Lou Dobbs!" exclaimed Vazquez, who I met through a community leader in Atlanta. As if speaking for the mass movement calling out Dobbs and CNN, Vazquez added, "I'll be damned if I allow them to get away with it."

I listen to Lou Dobbs. He grates me the wrong way often, too.
But, I must say, if you listen to him instead of rejecting him out of hand as does the author here; you will hear that he is against ILLEGAL immigration?
What is wrong with that? What is wrong with being against something that is illegal?
The rule of law is important and needs to be maintained.
I wish this author and those who speak for "Latinos" could understand that and stand up for the laws of this country and not some nebulous "immigrant rights" that simply do not exist for those who are breaking the law.

We've got many law abiding legal immigrants who come from Mexico and beyond. I welcome each and every one of them. The others can go to hell...or better yet, back to Mexico.

It was funny to some to think that a few thousands of folks formerly or ancestrally (by a generation of two) from Cuba now living in Florida could swing a presidential election.
Oh, how dumb were those folks...

What I find really funny (not haha) is that these are the same people who forget that their ancestors came here from where exactly?! And while your forbears may have come into this nation before the "immigration laws" were on the books - it does not mean that you too are not an immigrant! Unless you can claim the status of those living on the reservation, or your name may include that of a gerund - YOU TOO ARE AN IMMIGRANT!!!

This was all a move on the part of Reagan to break the Unions in the U.S. It's about paying decent wages for all! Those in other countries, and here. Why are union organizers taregted and assassinated in the same countries these people are fleeing from? Duh. Those governments are supported by our government for military hardware and trained in "our" military facilities to torture and kill their civilians.
Why would they want to come to a country where people like Dobbs are payed a lot of money telling people to hate them? Because it is better to starve?
The real issue is our screwing with their governments, and killing their people who would fight for a better world.

Why not just open the border, and allow everyone who wants to, to immigrate to America?
To quote Milton Friedman, "..you can't have open immigration, and a Welfare State."
Previous generations of immigrants came here with no guarantees, and could not become a burden of the state (and its citizens.)
Now, even those immigrants who break US immigration law pretty much can't fail. If they come here and do nothing but get a fake ID, they can collect welfare, a government subsidized education, social security benefits and other social services.
Soon, if Obama's administration gets its way, illegals will get Amnesty and will therefore legally qualify for full government option healthcare benefits (technically avoiding covering illegal immigrants), full college scholarship, and free pizza for life. Ok, I made that last one up.
It doesn't matter that all existing social service programs are all already out of money. That's alright. We can just issue more bonds (IOUs) to ourselves (just like Enron) and to foreign countries (if we beg them, for a little while longer, at least), and continue to print even more baseless money.
I know, you're right, Al Franken. It's unpatriotic of me to question the value of paper issued by the US government, but someone has to.
We are still sitting on a bubble (the largest ever) of worthless fiat currency, and continuing to expand our money supply and our debt will innevitably result in the total economic collapse of the country (just like the Weimar Republic. Guess who took over Germany after that.)
Is that what our Progressive leaders want? Why not? After the final collapse, they get to blame it all on capitalism (again), and to finally, fully transform the country into the first true socialist utopia (they control), where human nature, motivation, and the laws of physics no longer apply.
BTW: What does an unending stream of uneducated workers do to the wages in this country in the mean time? Of course, it brings them down. As long as their competitors have unlimited cheap labor available to them, businesses that rely on unskilled labor will have to employ illegals. Those that don't, can't compete, and go out of business.

Why every time the word ' illegal aliens" are mentioned people think about ' Mexico “and start and whole new discussion about braking the laws?
Immigration laws as any other laws are needed as a framer of conduct ,but they cannot be applied automatically, law is not an exact science, it is a human science, that is why there is a whole branch of government just to interpret it, another to create it and another to execute it...
As far, as it still currently in the books, is a misdemeanor not a crime...
How we are going to start a 'comprehensive' discussion if we do not even allow ourselves to understand the rules of this game and the complexities of lives of 12 million people already here?
Lou is not the answer and CNN Latino is not the answer, we need serious people in charge, we need the laws written and Immigration Judges not tied-up without their discretionary opinion as they are currently. We need to go back before 9-11 moods when ‘illegals' were not a synonym of ' terrorists'...
All the 9-11 hijackers came from Canada and with visas, why this wall on the south border then? Lou was asked about this on his program, he just dismissed the guy...
These are the questions we should be asking; something is not right with the way of thinking of the media and those in charge to protect us... America should not became a scapegoat country, we have a tradition of confronting our problems facing them, trying to expose them, bringing them into light, not hiding them or letting others make decisions based on their fears, when we did that history has shown us how bad things have gotten, we do not need lynch mobs, we need above all tolerance...We must not have to come one hundred years later and apologize for our wrongdoings...
Lou is forming opinions shedding light to one side of the equation and the Latino programming is trying to sugar-up the community, this is a bad decision for this media outlet, nor it is being fair or balanced at all…

There should be no excuse to not install a nationwide mandatory system of worker identification. My suggestion is that--ALL-I-9's should be copied and a duplicates sent to a Homeland Security Clearing House? Creating such an office would be a simple affair, if our state and federal government would be more beneficial to the working American male and female. If our government is sincere in securing our borders, and introducing new immigration enforcement tools, then E-Verify will become the final deterrent and not be weakened by Sen Harry Reid and his administration. I have made a point of speaking to a few business human resources departments, and found most are enthusiastic about the use of Verify. Only 1 of the 6 companies that I investigated determined some false negatives" and "false positives. But they always have a backup system of contacting the Social Security agency nearest to them, until the irregularities are resolved.
All that remains is citizens and legal residents to stop the Obama people from throwing a wrench in the cogs and stopping any technological advancement with E-Verify. E-Verify can be used on a universal level in checking bogus drivers license applications, auto insurance, home purchase, health care and other personal data. It would certainly alleviate the kidnapping of social service programs by the 20 to 30 illegal immigrants in America. It would displace foreign nationals so down-trodden legal single mums with children, homeless vets, senior citizens and even students could get employment. It all depends on all of us to contact our Representative in Washington at 202-224-3121. Tell them you don't want half measures by full permanent implementation? NO MORE DRAGGING THEIR FEET? Tell them your remember them on next election day. YOU ALSO WANT AN END TO ANOTHER AMNESTY.
Don't let them distract you, but repeat your demands without hesitation to these open border jerks. Invest a little time and check what your politicians are doing to our immigration enforcement safeguard at NUMBERSUSA. Read about the consequences of future OVERPOPULATION at WEBCAPS and our collapsing infrastructure, that has been ignored for decades nationwide. Last read factual information at JUDICIAL WATCH that discloses the lawmakers, that are running the country for themselves, friends and business associates. ITS ALL FREE. Read that some of the White House Czars are not true Democrats, but are shadowed by their past Liberal Marxist backgrounds.

Looking at the USA from outside its borders and with the perspective of a "foreigner," I am constantly appalled, but no longer shocked by the attitudes and the vitriolic expressions of Americans who seem to have forgotten all that warm and fuzzy stuff about poor, tired masses yearning to be free.
As for CNN and Mr. Dobbs, the howls of anger coming forth from your republic (and mainly from your Republicans) can be deafening ... especially from those racists, Beckheads and warmongers who lurk in the Bushes (41 or 43) and seem eager to rapture with Sarah bin Silly.
Think about this! CNN is a profit-making enterprise. It is about stirring pots, provoking responses and winning audiences. Mr. Dobbs attracts people who see him as a seriously "white" knight and people who love to hate him as well. Both buy the products advertised in the commercial breaks.
Limp liberals will probably coo when Soledad puts on her happy face and talks about the problems of the past and the inevitable hopes for a better future; meanwhile, unreconstructed imperialists eager to fight the Mexican-American War all over again will check her out for further evidence that Latinos are corrupting the far-famed "American Way of Life."
It's infotainment, folks. In fact, it's disinfotainment ... with two (and only two!) sides to every story: the robust right and the lame left in all their gloriously stereotypical and utterly predictable enthusiasms and outrages.
The "best political team on television"? No, just choreographed and scripted pseudo-debate intended to do what? Oh yes, boost the ratings!
Today, a wall along the border. Tomorrow we nuke Iran!
