Why Conservatives Are Really Afraid of a Black President

The president reminds Glenn Beck, and those who identify with his white neo-nationalism, of the lie of their own professed superiority.

... in Obama's America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering, "Yay, right on, right on, right on, right on," and, of course, everybody says the white kid deserved it, he was born a racist, he's white. Newsweek magazine told us this. We know that white students are destroying civility on buses, white students destroying civility in classrooms all over America, white congressmen destroying civility in the House of Representatives. -- Rush Limbaugh,
Sept. 15, 2009

Ever the statesman, and often candid to a political fault, former President Jimmy Carter said recently that much of the animosity directed toward President Barack Obama is "based on the fact that he is a black man."

A lifelong Southerner, Carter acknowledged that the inclination of racism still exists, and that "it has bubbled up to the surface because of the belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African Americans are not qualified to lead this great country."

Though courageous, the former president's pronouncement will surely be considered controversial to many Republicans and Democrats alike. Some will view Carter's comments as politically inexpedient.

The topic of race in general, and charges of racism in particular, is political dynamite that typically explodes in the hands of the accuser -- just ask [Harvard] Professor Skip Gates, [New York] Gov. David Paterson, or Obama (whom I will return to momentarily).

Unless someone is wearing a Klan hood while yelling, "Nigger, Go Back to Africa," the charge of racism seems to offend the accused these days more than the actual victims.

This is true, in part, due to the most prevalent view of the problem of race and racism in this country. In the eyes of many, the responsibility of moving beyond racial conflict in America is placed at the feet of minority communities of color, as opposed to the dominant society.

We've all heard it. America will move beyond race to a colorblind society only when minority groups cease dwelling on difference. Such a view permeates the melting pot ideal of American folklore, the myth of meritocracy and even the "post-racial" dimension of electoral politics.

Thus, for Carter to call out this segment of the white community, he is disrupting the conspiracy of silence concerning racial injustice that demands the allegiance of politicians on the national scene.

Think about it. Is this not the racial bargain that Obama accepted to become the nation's first African American president? Matters pertaining to race have been avoided unless absolutely necessary (cough, cough, the Rev. [Jeremiah] Wright).

And in terms of policy, obstacles faced by any particular group, like disproportionate unemployment among communities of color, for example, are obfuscated by anemic and ineffectual broad-based prescriptions. Rising tides lift all boats, right?

Yet Obama's enormous success in life, whether as a highly educated community organizer or as America's commander in chief, exposes the paradox this sort of faux post-racialism presents.

It's a one-sided deal for people of color; as "post-racial" in effect means post-black, post-brown, post-red and post-yellow, while leaving the normative racial framework of whiteness intact. Race is the challenge people of color must confront and, dare I say, "get over."

But a post-racial America does not demand the same of those who identify with, and claim the social construction of, whiteness and perceived privileges and cultural superiority therein.

This is why, it would seem, Obama's body standing behind the American presidential seal has a critical segment of America losing its hold on reality -- a reality, I would argue, few have ever been forced to acknowledge up to this point.

Whether it's the birthers, tea-baggers, deathers, indoctrinators, or "You lie!"-ers, they have neither veiled their racial animus nor cloaked their white nationalism. The prevalence of racist images of Obama brandished by protesters juxtaposed with calls of "taking our country back" are reminiscent of D.W. Griffith's fictional America as depicted in the film Birth of a Nation.

Every time there is mention of the Beck's of the world, you lose a bit of power.

Stop giving them attention on this site. It doesn't matter... they will go away. And there are far more important things to worry about.

We were among those who warned during the election campaign that his colour could well deprive Obama of the presidency even though the US and the world was pleading for a change from the catastrophe for America and the world of G W Bush.

Indeed Obama's victory was far more modest than the wishes so great a majority merited. Indeed many pundits believe that only the fortuitous financial crash at the end of 2008 assured his election.

We in Europe are appalled to see such violent and mindless opposition to the one man who is trying to deal with the crippling mess bequeathed to him by 8 years of Bush.

As one who experienced the profundity of American racism when visiting non-white friends (e.g. accosted in the street in Lexington Kentucky "take your nigger back north") I believe President Carter needs congratulating on speaking out.

The extraordinary criticism of the award of the Nobel Prize from all directions, left and right, should have made all Americans proud. Objections to the award would not have reached this emotional intensity had Obama been white. Where is America's much vaunted patriotism when so many vilify their leader while he grapples to overcome so many urgent open files left by his predecessor?

you cant be a liberal unless you think the world is shitting on you and the other guy is racist. How obsessed some are with race.

how about some don't like Obama because of his radical ties with America hating home grown terrorists and his willingness to denounce the very country that has elected him. THAT make some people nervous!

Our world has changed. Conservatives don't like change. It's as eye-poppingly simple as that.

This country will never again be run exclusively by white, male Protestants. Instead of having a collective, mass hissy fit, they should just get used to the idea. Shit! It's not as if Barack Obama was an alien from a far and distant galaxy! He's one of us - a home grown, all American kind of guy! And a fairly nice guy at that!

If he were really the creepy, BIG, BAD, BLACK, BOLSHEVIK BOGEY MAN the right wing is portraying him to be, it never would have been possible to even nominate him, let alone elect him. These people ought really to take a chill pill.

I am not one-hundred percent crazy about the man's policies, but I love Barack Obama. There's never been a president in my lifetime that I could say that about. I love JFK but that is only in hindsight. When he was alive I was too young to give a damn about him one way or the other. I just new him as that guy on TV with all that hair! Obama on the other hand, is the real thing. He may not be perfect but I know his heart is in the right place.

Hey, Right Wing! Give Barack a chance. He's on our side!

TERRORIST BOMBS MOON!

Wealth, Power and the Culture Wars
Posted by: peacelf on Oct 10, 2009 4:58 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
For the past 29 years at the academic level a culture war has been waged and more recently it has become mainstream. Rush, O'Reilly, Beck, Lou Dobbs, and other right wing pundits are self-appointed generals.

It's why the late (black lesbian) writer Audre Lorde wrote, "There is no hierarchy of oppression." All oppression is tied to wealth and power, and all wealth and power is tied to white patriarchal supremacy.

There's a number of changes going on that have the white patriarchal supremacists worried.

Deeply engrained in the culture wars is a racism that says everything good about america is white and male, and multiculturalism is the threat to this goodness.

Culture warriors understand that every institution in america - all levels of government, capitalism, public education, corporations, churches, you name it - are designed to serve white patriarchal supremacy, and the election of an African-american president marks a serious threat, a turning point in that supremacy.

Now, the greatest fear among white male racists is that socialism (a multicultural value) will infect america, that the white patriarchal supremacy stronghold, the corporation, risks dismantling, and the transformation will be complete.

The growing numbers of brown undocumented workers add to the fears of the right because white males numbers are declining. White males are the minority. But, they are still the ruling class/race/ gender.

These are the underlying fears among the right. President Jimmy Carter (the only president I ever shook hands with) is exposing the branches, but white patriarchal wealth and power are the roots.

peace

peacelf has it right. White paternalism will cling to its superiority with their dead, cold fingers.

Read Tim Tyson's Blood Done Sign My Name for a riveting view of Southern racial hatred and an honest view into one liberal Southerner's confrontation with ingrained societal racism.

I supported Mr. Obama, but recognize that he's now approaching our problems from the paternal view of wealth -- like all those who surround him. Time to level the playing field in all dimentions.

Too many whites out there see Blacks (and some other people of color) as ripping off too much of their tax money to support them with welfare, jails and health care. The irony is that racism for centuries meant such people are disproportionally users of such support and the taxes for them.

The Anti-Evolution 'Culture Warriors" more dangerous than..
Posted by: laurenaislinn on Oct 10, 2009 6:07 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
....it may seem. It isn't just that their belief in a literal reading of the bible Must be true or their world will fall apart.

Having attended a fundamentalist Lutheran elementary (1-8) grade school (& being an evolutionist from day 1 among other evil liberal things) I've seen directly how Evolution frightens them even more so:

1) If we're animals we have no souls (by which they mean conscience) & if no souls, thus no god;

2) If we have no 'souls' then there are no objective, immutable (god-given) laws of morality or in the U.S., god-given Rights, (because our cultural beliefs have evolved as animals), thus people would be perfectly free to behave in any manner they wish. Rulers, without god's giudence, may also supress even the peoples religious beliefs & right to carry firearms; and,

3)Although evolution can't be true, human 'devolution' Is believed true. That is, the 'degeneration of the races'from white European civilization--how they became 'chosen' is a mystery given this is a Middle-Eastern religion--and the 'lost tribes of Israel' have, as biblical Punishment, for rejecting 'the word of god' and having refused 'Jesus as their saviour', degenerated in color, form, behavior & belief from their original 'state of grace'.

And thus, 'we' white western christians were & are 'called upon' to save the rest of the world from themselves--

Because 'We' Are Superior.

(But: Since 'we're in the minority we're also Persecuted so we have a Right to Defend Ourselves.)

This is actually the thinking of very many-whether they understand it or not. Sane? Rationality would disagree. I think not, but then as an evolutionary paleobiologist I'm considered the 'devil's hand-maiden', leading others to sin (i.e., undermining white western 'superiority') regardless. Even actual reason is 'evil' in such minds.

Black Ghetto At Midnight
Posted by: melpol on Oct 10, 2009 6:42 AM

High profiling of blacks in the media or government has not stopped racial discrimination in America. The presence of the black ghetto is the true measuring rod. Until the white gated community disappears along with the black ghetto, racial discrimination will continue to exist. The millions of whites that say America is in a post-racial period would never dare enter the black ghetto at midnight. They falsely imagine that they would be murdered, raped, or robbed.

I'm afraid the reason is as base as the fact that this is their only distinction that could possibly give them an edge in our competitive world. The overall assumption that being white automatically affords the white person an advantage, a superiority means that these porky, pasty, soft, lowlife untalented blobs of flesh are better than a brilliant, beautiful, talented, truthful, articulate, lovely, honorable black man anytime. It is their only tool because otherwise they have nothing to offer.

Obama is a conservative by political definition and he's doing all their dirty work. The conservatives are actually laughing behind the scenes from bailing out Wall $treet to increasing the yearly military spending to refusing to restore civil liberties. Speaking of civil liberties, how come the Obama blindies refuse to acknowledge the fact that by not repealing the "Patriot" Act, Obama is SOILING his own race by allowing racial profiling to continue persecuting minorities? Oh wait, Obama is getting the Nobel Peace Prize despite continuing Dubya's criminal war policies abroad and here at home ! AARRRRGHH !

This fucking Uncle Tom makes my skin crawl. As another person blinded by the unmitigated disaster of the Bush years, I liked Obama for several months, and even held my nose and voted for him. Never again will I throw a vote away on a Democrat or Republican. This focus on the Becks and Limbaughs and birthers of the world is precisely what the elite desire - as these blowhards are pure peanut gallery and offer no legitimate criticism, which is what we badly need. In any case, this piece of shit Obama is a traitor to his own race and cares about nothing but one color - green. Alternet is about to lose it's audience if it doesn't start posting some more intelligent and relevant stories. The Obamabots and anti-turfer turfers (yes, you are being manipulated in the classic astroturfing sense if you focus your outrage on a few ignorant working class whites)have a home at HuffPo; can we please elevate here? The comments are usually far better than the actual stories here lately.

Race can be used as a crutch
Posted by: GBMeyers on Oct 10, 2009 11:15 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
As a white conservative Christian (does that make me a minority?) I have often viewed race from the perspective of the Bible (don't ask the left to consider the Christian God.) There is only one race, the human race. We are all descendents of Adam & Eve and Noah and his sons. If others veiwed everyone as a brother we wouldn't have half the problems we have. Being brothers in humanity does not mean that we are all brothers in Christ. Most on the left hate the idea of an almighty God unless he is one of their own making.
I have found that usually those who accuse others of intolerance or racism are usually very intolerant and racist themselves. I have been falsely accused of being a racist. I used to work hospital security in an inner city hospital. I remember when one black man (who had no business) accused me of harassing him just because he was black. I then pointed out to him (loudly so everyone present would hear) how everyone in the waiting room was black and asked him to think about what he had just said. You should have heard all the snickering in the waiting area. He was the racist! Trying to use race as a crutch.
Yes, there are some whites who are racist, but there are many blacks who are racist also. Anyone who refused to vote for Obama simply because he is a black man is a racist. In the same way anyone who voted FOR Obama simply because he is black is also a racist!
The Federal Government we have created is racist when it asks for race on applications. Race shouldn't even be part of the equation. Many times when we bring race into a situation it worsens things and it is usually the person who brought up race who is the true racist. MLK himself looked forward to a world where men are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, yet how many times are white conservatives accused of racism simply because they're white and conservative (or does that automatically make one racist?). There will always be racism as long as people continue to use it as an excuse and a crutch for people who can't make reasoned arguments.

The White Upper Crust fraternity boys had a huge party. Drunk on kegs of power, they date-raped our environment, took a dump in the pool, started a big fight and generally made a huge mess.
Their pet Latino was under investigation for taking money under the table while doing their dirty work.
As usual, it became a black man's job to clean up their mess.
And now they're angry because they didn't get to TELL the 'uppity N' to clean it up.

The policies of the Bush Regime have been continued under Obama...Patriot Act...wars... thieving...

These people do Obama a favor and in doing so do Obama's owners--the Goldman Sachs' crowd-- a favour. Rupert Murdoch and Wall Street were on the Obama bandwagon, as were the Zionist Chicago controllers of General Dynamics. This should have told you what Obama was all about before the election...obviously, it didn't.
Beck and Limbaugh, with their insane attacks on the Obamanoids, help keep Howdy Doody's waning support intact within the limited context of the Demopublican duality inhabited by the overwhelming majority of the electorate-- including those jokes who call themselves "independent"...who for the most part vote either Democratic or Republican.

Beck is Murdoch's dog...and Limbaugh?...he belongs to whoever supplies his hillbilly heroin and Viagra.

Finally, someone who sees things clearly

Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I have expressed such sentiments many times before, including here on Alternet.

Barack Obama, even had he NOT become an elected president, still represents a "threat" to the false religion of white supremacy by simply not being what these whites have come to believe about blacks. Thugs, gangstas and baby mamas these whites can accept and actually "like" in the sense that those images coincide with their views. Successful and educated blacks do not, thusly the desparate and often ludicrous desire for an explanation or to downplay that success.

Notice how many whites are now willing to claim Obama's half-white parentage, as if THOSE genes and not the dark-skinned African ones, are the reasons for his success.

The sad fact of the matter is that liberal whites, in their earnest zeal to see "beyond" color, actually give tacit approval to those who not only see color, but react negatively towards it. The only way to become "post-racial" is to deal openly and honestly with racism.

But as Eric Holder said, we truly ARE a nation of cowards.

As more liberals, moderates, independents, etc ... leave the Obama building, I expect that there will be more race baiting articles designed for audiences who will desperately try to beg minorities to vote "Democrat" or it's the end of the world bullshit. I'm tired of our side blaming race problems for Obama's failures. Obama brought this on himself. Had he been an economic populist, the "conservatives" wouldn't be this noisy as they are today. Until Obama gets off being an elitist and turns to progressive populism, he'll keep losing and losing and losing and ...

I find it incredible, but not that surprising really, that so many fail to see the underlying racial implications of our nations divisions. Yes, Obama has not lived up to the hype or his promises so far, but it's tough to get much done when the status quo is cemented in the interests of elites.
But there are many on the right who are stirring up the seeds of white racial resentment. The ability to see past this, to not pay attention to the significance, consequences, and social realities of race is a privilege enjoyed by all those who have never been asked to critically examine their own "race" as a created privilege. It's very sad, but not surprising. I have to remember that people must be controlled.

"liberal" or "conservative, what’s a armadillo to do?

Remember! It was a group of others on a chosen special committee that voted for the choice of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Now, For what ever their reasons it was their choice to make so with out much a’ due and the wisdom of good taste “suck it up” and act like “civil” ladies and gentlemen that President Obama was their choice.

Let us all be proud that the United States of America was the recipient through President Obama.

Have some dignity, self respect, and pride in the U.S.A. for each of us are a part of this nation and any one selected for an honor by others share in the dignity and self-respect of their choice.

if you don’t agree then speak to the people that made that choice in a manner of civil discourse.

Not a public display of a babbling mouth disease of a spoilt child that has not yet learned to be a responsible human in the course of using one’s gray matter to add quality and dignity in matters of state.

It would seem to me that people do not know the difference between the words "liberal" or "conservative" or what this all adds up too.

This is just another element of "cybertribualism" a creation of how primitive homo sapiens still is.

With lack of gray matter and the fear, terror and lack of self-respect in the virtual reality we live in as Phil Collins song says "Just another day in paradise"!

I would say we all need a rehab for learning disorders and this is what reality is all about.

Just a thought from an old armadillo trying to understand what “man” is all about.

The world is full of sick jokes and those who rant, scream and wish to PR this to promote hate, dishonor for the sake of their desire for power, money self adulation in their own “cyber ghetto following of thoughtless lemmings looking for a truth that will never come.”

This is the gang of the nightmare of non think whom fear, anger and hate rule for they are always acting in as just another "Kafka cockroach" looking for their dung on a bath room floor in the lost great media tent of bought and paid for PR tape worms that live as parasites of others gray matter.

Attacks on Obama are similar to attacks on Clinton
Posted by: rational_moderate on Oct 11, 2009 8:14 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I'm doubtful of these claims that attacks against Obama are primarily motivated by racism. One reason for my skepticism is that the attacks against Bill Clinton in his presidency were similarly intense as those against Obama. Of course, there's some sector of the population whose response is motivated primarily by racism, but it's hard to tell how big that is.
The fact that some right-wing blow-hards use racial imagery in their attacks doesn't necessarily reflect those people's views; rather it might just be the "red meat" they know will work with some of their stupid audience.
With Bill Clinton, the imagery was more about Bubba (playing to anti-southern prejudices) and about "slick Willy" (turning his exceptional communication skills against him), and of course his adulterous ways (which was the low hanging fruit that it seems didn't need to be made up).
If Hillary had been elected, the attacks would've been misogynist. If John Edwards had been elected, it would have been about his "pretty boy" look and his ambulance chasing ways.
If a democrat doesn't have an easy caricature to make fun of, they'll make something up. For example, Howard Dean (who was my favorite presidential candidate in the last 20+ years) didn't have any obvious thing to grab onto, so the media completely fabricated this image of his as an ultra-liberal who was angry and uncontrolled. This is especially ironic with him as a fiscal conservative who was advised early in his campaign that he was too much of a cool cucumber to be electable, that he needed to work on demonstrating more emotion and anger.

Xenophobia is Normal

Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Unfortunately racism is a built-in thing. All sentient creatures exhibit some form of Xenophobia. The ones that don't become extinct.
The fear of strangers, the fear of they who are different, the other tribe with the bigger canine teeth, it's all part of the survival instinct.
That's not to say that some manifestations of this phenomena are learned. For example: The fear of snakes is taught. Phobias are most always the result of peer influence and/or traumatic events.
Everyone has Xenophobia to some extent. An intelligent human has the option of turning off the behavior associated with it but not the instinct itself. The first step is to acknowledge one's racism. We are all guilty of this. When our egos allow us to quit denying it we can then overcome it. But it will always be there lurking in the background to surface when something new and unfamiliar comes along.

Racism is a mental disorder all whites have to some degree
Posted by: nfamous23 on Oct 11, 2009 11:42 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It's easy to call rednecks with nooses and Confederate flags racists when in fact most white liberals are also racist in different ways. Until the childhood psychological issues of whites are addressed that resulted in their sublimating maternal separation and fear of selfhood into hatred of their excrement which becomes a symbol for blackness and is later purified into gold, money and other forms of currency via violence and technocracy, then nothing will change. The North and the South both hated blacks. They fought over how to deal with them psychologically, not states' rights and not slavery. The South preferred dominative racism and still does. The North preferred aversive racism, aka white apathy, and still does. These subconscious issues will not go away from open debates, casual conversation or any such nonsense because they are subconscious. White people have a need to purify the world in their minds because they see the body as filth. Whites want to control nature because and objectify everything including humans. Everything has to be re-made into a perfect, commoditized entity under their control and ownership. Much of this anal retentive and expulsive behavior comes from the Oedipal complex, whereby black males are seen as the threat to white female purity like the father. To combat it black males are emasculated and made to look like fools like the son. The father fears the son will grow up and destroy him. The son hates the father for sleeping with the mother. Racism is most classical Freudian psychology gone awry. White people need help but they won't get it, especially not as a whole because whites still refuse to admit collectively that they have a problem. The suffering of whites and nonwhites will continue as the technocracy of capitalism grinds forward sublimating, splitting and abstracting everything in its path to vent the aggression rooted in maternal separation during the anal phase. There is nothing anyone can do to address a problem without first admitting it exists. White denial prevents any possibility of human civilization from saving itself. Whites now have the technology, means and motive to destroy all life on this planet and they will eventually do it. We could have prevented it but humans are fatally flawed. Maybe Mother Nature is just doing everything a favor by ridding itself of us.

1. On townhall.com the following comments re Obama have recently been posted: Obaboo, O'Purple Lips, makes white people his slaves, seeking slave reparation, power-mongering scum, Mulatto Messiah, racist black Commie agitator, Monkey Man, his mother was white trash because she was attracted to black men, Aunt Jemima and "gorilla" (Michelle Obama); "Put the 1/2 honky 1/2 coon on the moon by June".

2. Go to townhall.com to see Jonah Goldberg's article "In Defense of Glenn Beck". As of now it has 417 Comments, and about half of them hail Beck as "a truth-teller". The conservative base adores him at least as much as they do Sarah Palin, therefore they believe anything he tells them; Josef Goebbels ("Veracity does not determine credibility") is a happy man tonight. I would not be quick to dismiss Glenn Beck. He is a malicious asshole, but he has the gift of shaping public opinion and so far he has been instrumental in getting ACORN defunded, Van Jones gone, and the President of the United States perceived to be a Nazi and a Communist. His current schtick seems to be channeling Senator Joseph McCarthy and now his faithful are starting to notice Communism all around them. Do go to townhall.com just to get the flavor of Beck-world. Also go to DeSmogBlog for details about the connection between Beck and various conservative think-tanks funded by the energy business; what a surprise. Beck is being used by Corporate America to bloody and delegitimize this black president with ideas above his station.

3) Deja vu all over again: in my youth I heard that black people were coming to get white people because they wanted to rape (or marry) the white guy's sister. Now right-wing forums are full of "Obama's private [black militant] army is coming to invade our homes, confiscate our guns, indoctrinate our children, recruit our teenagers, steal our wealth, forcibly vaccinate us, and circumcise our men". The word for a black person of means used to be "uppity"; now it's "narcissistic". Different words, same music. Ho hum.

You might keep in mind that nearly all of the black men lynched were lynched by Democrats. And Jim Crow laws were for the most part a creation of Democrats.

Those faces you saw mugging, Most likely Democrats.

"I have never seen very many white people who felt they were being imposed upon or being subjected to any second-class citizenship if they were directed to a waiting room or to any other public facility to wait or to eat with other white people. Only the Negroes, of all the races which are in this land, publicly proclaim they are being mistreated, imposed upon, and declared second-class citizens because they must go to public facilities with members of their own race."

uncritical devotion to their own.

I am not so sure that Carter is correct on this one. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton had trouble winning among southern whites even when they won. The last Democratic president to win amongst the southern whites was LBJ in 1964. It is my understanding that the southern whites who voted solidly Republican after 1964 did so initially because of mainly race. But other social issues such as women's rights, gun control, war on terror, etc ... came up that even non-racist southern whites showed their blind loyalty to the Republicans based on single issues such as those three. To complicate matters, let us say that a white Democrat were running against a black Republican such as Clarence Thomas or Condelizza Rice. Most of these same voters would choose the black Republican over the white Democrat. Then we would have a black president, albeit Republican, who the conservatives would not fear.

Go to townhall.com this morning 10-12 and look in the upper left-hand corner of the monitor screen at a little box that says "Sign up now". Note the three pictures shown there. Conservative authors Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin are shown as pretty women---their faces are not caricatured. The third picture is of President Obama. His nose is shown as grotesquely large, as are his lips, he has googly eyes, and his complexion is darker than is natural. This racist caricature advertises a website where hurt conservatives constantly protest that they are not racist.

I agree with other posters that we give too much power to the likes of Glen Beck, when the real problem is a President who says all the right things but doesn't follow through on any of them or when he does act, does the opposite of what he says. I believe that free-floating anger in this country couldn't be exploited by a Beck or Limbaugh if we had a President who spent more time working for the people than Wall Street or the pharmaceutical companies, not to mention continue the same human rights abuses that were the hallmark of the Bush regime.

If the people really had a sense he cared about them rather than be witness to his feeding us continually the word "hope" as a code word for dreams deferred, Beck wouldn't have so much anger to feed on.

EXCELLENT ARTICLE!!! Thank you.

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The article is so good I wish I could say I wrote it myself when I pass it along to others. Many of the 237 comments I skimmed through just seem to illustrate and reinforce the premises that racism is more a white person's burden and responsibility than anyone else's - which always gets under the skin of us white people. Reactions to our having a President of color come from being forced to face the terrifying truth that the assumed supremacy of the white race never was a justifiable attitude. Worse yet, the days when we may continue to promulgate the lie of white entitlement to the best of everything are dwindling fast, as the numbers of white people in the country to people of color dwindle to desperately low proportions. White racists are reacting like scared little children - with ever more brazen hostility born of such fear even though whites have never really shown any kind of cohesiveness around any issue other than maintaining their unmerited dominance as a population group in this country over people who are not white. It seems to me that white people have always shown hatred toward other white people as much as they have hated people of color. Just look at American attitudes toward our Northern European cousins; particularly Germans, French and Polish people. Always seemed kind of ironic to me that white Americans will mercilessly trash those foreign nationalities, belittle them, and denounce their very existence when it seems like a matter of all of us against some of them them. But when it comes to considering questions of "supremacy" these same white Americans implicitly identify with our white inferiors and enemies in order to distinguish ourselves from Americans of African or Asian decent. And possibly pad our numbers. What a bunch of morons we are! If it weren't so treacherous and evil it would be laughable and pathetic.

I am a young conservative and I would like to comment about any preconceived notions about conservatives. Now obviously I cannot speak for all people, and I know there are people out there that are racist and that is sad. Disgusting. To ME!!! A Conservative!!! I listen to Glenn Beck quite often, and if you think he is racist and that his show is spreading racism, I INVITE you to actually listen to his program! You will see the truth for yourself, that we are not racist and that we are not afraid of minorities in power. And I hope you don't think I (or he) is racist just because we disagree with the President, or anyone else for that matter. It is simply a difference in opinions, in core issues. I do not agree with the President, but also I do not agree with a lot of the WHITE MEN in government, in politics, in power. It does not matter to me the color of ones skin. I am not AFRAID of a black man in power or in charge of this great country. What we I not like, is that I see the government growing TOO large, spending TOO much, becoming TOO fraudulent...
You may be surprised to see how much we have in common. This kind of article only spreads hate. And that is the last thing our country needs! And also, there are many minorities who listen to the Glenn Beck show... and who agree the majority of what he stands for. And like he says, WHAT has he(we)EVER SAID, that is racist? And no one can ever answer that question, because the truth is we are not racist...we just have different beliefs systems. That's the truth.

Why not the President. They fed on terrorism for years. A concept designed by their leader. They were all happy because there was something huge to despise. Laws were changed other laws re-written, a color coded chart, several warnings, and a general fear gripped the nation. And there was happiness among the Conservatives. Then came the election. They had found their comfort zone and resent any attempt to change it. They don't care about the rest of us, it's not their style. I think that they first feel their pent up hatred and THEN find a way to direct it. Enter Barack Obama! He filled the bill. ANNA

Why do left wingers focus on Glenn Beck a man who has no power and is just as unstable and dubious as one Van Jones and other people who are actually inside the white house with a scrap of power....

I wake up and wonder why the country is in the state it is in and it's pretty obvious this isn't American Idle less focus on TV personalities and more on the actual Government.

It is quite gratifying to know that despite all the hate speeches and harangue Obama remains the great hero of all Americans!Racism and ignorance, and poverty must co-exist.What kills racism is OPPORTUNITY with capital O.In anycase, hate speeches, especially when not seditious, are big equations for free speech which is what every democracy needs! The absurdity of vocal civilized dissent is that nobody could scarify racist or hate speech without falling into the inevitable social quagmire of becoming an active racist himself. This is the high point I tried to depict in my controversial novel,MORGAN V [2008,Raider Publishing,NEW YORK]where the whole storyline was vehemently attacked on account of its perceived explicit details on racism-several passages had to be bowdlerized.Well,my defense to the glib charges of racist epithets had always been that a good writer must only hold a mirror to any society and not to paint a surreal, idylic picture of any society. When a good mirror is placed before a racist he may see a very ugly image reflected back at him. This is the tragedy of the American conservative.
STEVE ADAMS,author of MORGAN V.

Racism is alive and well in good ole USA. Saw this on TV and was freaked out, so we got it taped and translated.
To think of illegals in this country breaking laws, but for this to be their catering?? please speak out about this! Some find
it funny, some find it offensive, most find it HORRIBLE. It is sad we have
this kind of material on our airwaves.

O.K. let's get this all out in the open once and for all. The article is basically rubbish,
because you can and will discuss the race card
forever. You all seem to relish commentary like this. Until you all realize and accept that there is only one race, namely the human
race, then you are doomed to be racist in one form or another. It was evident in the undertones of the article.
You see, I'm not a racist and I do not care about a person of color reaching high office provided that they are worthy for that position.

Barack Hussein Obama is not, by any stretch of the imagination, our first black American
President. O.K for all intents and purposes
he was born in Hawaii. He's a naturlized citizen. The first and most impressionable seven years of his life was spent
in a foreign country, and so as one commentator
wrote: "He's one of us, a homegrown all American guy". That is a ridiculous statement,
now isn't it?
To the best of my knowledge Mr. Obama's father
was a black Kenyan, his mother, a young white
girl from Kansas. He has no ancestral ties to
any black African American family. His natural
skin tone is of mixed race, not black American.
And that's OK. I don't care what color his skin. I care that he turns out to be susccessful as our President, but he is not
America's first black President. Perhaps because of his dual mix, many are pleased that
he represents all 'races' in America. But he is
not a solidly black American. The media is still intoxicated with him and mesmerized by him, but it is wrong of them to place him on the errroneous pedastal of being our first
black American President.
We all wish him well in his endeavours; however, as a politician he makes many of us
a little nervous. His focus , in my humble opinion, should be reparation of the economy.
Stay at home, Mr. Presidennt and get America
back on track first and foremost.

1) If we're animals we have no souls (by which they mean conscience) & if no souls, thus no god;

A white, fifty-something, mouth breathing dolt in a huge Buick going 20 mph under the speed limit in a no psssing zone who's had his left turn signal on for the past ten miles?
This is the base for bugs beck, lush limberger, shill o'liely and other blubberheads to appeal to and stir up.
It's rapidly shrinking, due to the abbrivated lifespans of these zombies. That's the good news.
The bad news is until they all disappear, they'll continue to ba a royal pain in the ass.

Rest Typical race baiting spew. Issue of race will never go away especially not when it's being used as a industry and a way to get 15mins of fame and your face on TV.

B. Hussein Obama is the single 666 man who will not only destroy the USA, but the world at large. Wait, this horrible man hasn't even started and our country is half way down the toilet.

This isn't a left or right issue, rather an American issue! Copenhagen Climate Treaty - Definitely a must read for all Americans, will Obama "read" the treaty, especially the fine print before signing?
