For reasons that I don’t understand -- perhaps it’s subconscious karmic payback for murdering children in a past life -- I feel compelled to read a lot of right-wing blogs.

The wonderful thing about them is the window they offer into the pulsing id of the conservative movement -- up close and personal and without the filters of focus groups or dog whistles. For instance, do you think that Glenn Beck is insane? Oh puh-lease. Beck has precisely nothing on your typical Red State diarist or NewsMax columnist, each of whom is likely to support abolishing women’s suffrage or launching a military coup against Obama at any given time.

To give you an idea of the level of madness we’re looking at here, I’ve decided to share with you the five stupidest, craziest and most inflammatory things that right-wingers said over the span of a single week. When you read these things, keep in mind that these are the sorts of people Republican officials have to interact with on a regular basis. Indeed, the following five crazed tirades are almost enough to make you feel a little sorry for those staffers. Most of them came to Washington to act as soulless money funnels for corporate interests. Instead, they end up spending much of their time taking angry calls from some screamer who wants to privatize his local police force.

Number 5: John Derbyshire takes a bold stand against women’s suffrage

Last week, John Derbyshire, the National Review’s resident British crank, outlined a bold strategy to help Republicans return to power: by denying women the right to vote. The Derb explained that the trouble with women is that “they want someone to nurture, they want someone to help raise their kids, and if men aren’t inclined to do it… then they’d like the state to do it for them.” In other words, uterus-afflicted individuals should be barred from voting because they’re more likely to vote for people who disagree with John Derbyshire. Democracy in action!

Derb tried to show that he wasn’t completely out to lunch, however, by acknowledging that it’s highly unlikely that women will ever give up their right to vote.  Of course, if women ever did find their right to vote repealed someday, Derb also said that he “wouldn’t lose a minute’s sleep” over it.

What is refreshing about Derbyshire is that he doesn’t try to hide his bigotry or to disguise it with code words – he just has it right out there. Derbyshire has been known to openly game-plan future race wars, to declare that blacks and Latinos are too stupid to educate and to write entire columns declaring his hatred for Chelsea Clinton back when she was just 20 years old. So in this respect, it’s not shocking that Derbyshire opposes women’s suffrage. What’s shocking is that it took him this long to say it.

Number 4: Erick Erickson threatens to dissolve his own town’s police department

Erick Erickson, the founder and managing editor of RedState.com, has a second gig as a city councilor in his hometown of Macon, Georgia. And apparently, the police force in that town is upset by low pay and long hours and they want to form a union. Erickson’s response? He threatens to simply abolish the entire department!

Writing at the PeachPundit blog, Erickson said that he actually asked the city attorney about the possibility of dissolving the police department. The attorney replied that police unions in the state of Georgia cannot strike or collectively bargain, meaning that any union the police formed would be essentially worthless. This didn’t deter Erickson entirely, however, as he said he’d still rather “contract out to the sheriff’s office than see a union come in” because unions “breed inefficiency, corruption, and taint.”

Regardless of how this ultimately turns out, you have to seriously question the intelligence of a man who talks openly of canning his entire police department. It’s almost as if he’s begging to be pulled over and subjected to multiple anal cavity searches.

Number 3: John L. Perry urges a military coup against Obama

I knew that right-wingers would at some point start harboring fantasies of launching a military coup against Barack Obama, but even I confess that I didn’t expect them to come less than 10 months into his presidency.

Obama and Congress are working very very hard to fail and give the GOP their power back. The public lava is already getting hotter and flaming redder and unless this party moves left and it ain't, the Republicans will return sooner than expected. As a matter of fact, the GOP are already doing strong in this year's gubernatorial races in VA and NJ and Alternet isn't paying attention. Bread and circuses may be fun but when the public lava politically incinerates incumbents, it ain't gonna be pretty.

What do conservatives want?
Posted by: Sister_Lauren on Oct 5, 2009 2:44 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It used to be that I felt I understood what conservatives wanted: strong defense, low taxes and no illegal immigrants. But now with their vociferous opposition to hosting the Olympics in their own country, I admit that I literally do not understand what the hell motivates them anymore.

Well in my opinion that is an improvement. Now you will be aware (for a little while) that you were all wrong and actually know very little about them. If we are lucky, they are having the same realization about you.
Sure they say that is what they want, but do they even know themselves? I don't think so.

Longstanding Feud Between USOC and IOC Sank Chicago's Olympics Bid
Posted by: SkeeterVT1 on Oct 5, 2009 3:05 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The reason Chicago lost its bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics is an ongoing feud between the U.S. Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee over the U.S. television rights to the Games.

NBC, which has the U.S. TV rights through the London Games in 2012, is likely to be in a heated bidding war for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia and beyond.

But the USOC wants to set up its own "Olympics Network" to televise the 2014 and 2016 Games. Needless to say, this does not sit well with the IOC.

The USOC has made several other moves that have also angered the IOC. So it really should come as no surprise that Chicago would end up being eliminated in the first round of IOC voting -- although to be fair, the USOC-IOC feud was little publicized. Even President Obama wasn't aware of the dispute.

So don't blame Obama. Blame the USOC.

Stupid White People
Posted by: Tom Degan on Oct 5, 2009 3:51 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Seriously, has it dawned on you yet how utterly despicable these people are? I was just wonderin'.

The main goal of the GOP these days is to insure that President Obama's administration is a complete and utter failure. They want to see as many Americans as possible suffer in the next three years, thus, ensuring that they will be able to seize control of the executive branch in 2013. If the president succeeds in making life better for his countrymen and women, they fail. It's as simple as that. Mitch McConnell, to his credit, always looks quite uncomfortable when he is forced to justify policies as atrocious as those being put forward these days by that hideous party. But Cantor always has a serene, angelic smile on his face whenever he is forced to defend the morally indefensible - sort of like last week, at a Town Hall meeting when he told a woman whose mortally ill relative had been left bankrupt by her medical bills that she should rely on charity. He seemed so content with himself. Quite strange really.

The Great White Joke

I thought it was great.

Obama going to lobby for Chicago to host the Olympics was a nice touch. I'm also glad that Brazil won, good for them. The Olympics was supposedly founded on cooperation, competition and good will among nations. I hope this sets the tone for a great event.

For those of you who think it's all about winning, you're missing the point entirely. Competition is intended to inspire you to be the best that you can be and if that results in you becoming the "champion", you are then the representative of all competitors. Being obsessed with winning to the point of sacrificing your basic humanity makes you less than the best you can be, and therefore not the best champion, in all endeavors. True "champions" are rare. More common are "winners" who have in fact "lost" something important in their pursuit of personal glory.

I think Obama represented us well in this particular competition. Those who denigrate his effort are petty scolds, likely hoping to divert attention from their own inadequacies.

dying movement
Posted by: DHFabian on Oct 5, 2009 5:58 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This can happen with political/social movements.
They progress to a certain point, then fall off the deep end. As they die out (and especially after spectacular failure, as we saw with the Bush administration), they keep upping the rhetorical ante. The bizarre fringes gravitate to the center, gaining the public's attention simply because their ideas are so off-the-wall. The movement's voices become more like something out of Mad magazine, as we see today.

Think of it in terms of mad cow disease. A healthy cow that contracts this disease becomes increasingly sick, and as the disease progresses, it affects the brain, resulting in increasingly erratic and irrational behavior. Ultimately, the cow dies.

Glenn Beck Is An Entertainer

I don't think Beck believes half the stuff that comes out of his mouth. This may well be true about Limbaugh or Coulter. They all have a product to sell, which is entertaining Right Wing conservatives. The more outrageous the statements, the more hype they create, which causes even more people to tune in and buy their books. Of course I would never tune into any of their shows. I'd rather watch old reruns of Green Acres and The Brady Bunch.

Repeal the Womens vote- that just sent some female repugs screaming.
Fire the entire Police Force- there goes not only cops, but everyone who reveres them for their selfless public service. Who do we honor more - the Private in the Army who dies in the line of duty or the private mercenary? the concept of "Selflessness" becomes dubious when compensation is exorbinant. What the Private police force could make in pay- would be offset by the lose in image and status.
As for their claim of a bloodless coup...who says they have the ability to call the shots?
the Left has heard and seen that they are 'Armed and Dangerous'- so you think the Left would show up with a flower and a Joint?? It should be an image in the forefront of every Rightwingers mind after the Presidential campaign.."Palling around with Terrorists"??? Those cartoon depicting The Obama's in Black Panthers attire? Just like Sex- just because you are not talking about it does not mean you don't have it.The Left deserves an accomodation for keeping the more rebellious of our side contained since the early '70's.
They should not underestimate the amount of anger that has accumulated over time on the Left.
As for the Census worker- making insinuations about inappropriate sex only highlight the Repugs recent escapades more prominently.Affairs, solicitation and Prostitution of both kinds and even some Drugs.
That is a topic the Rightwings should be Whistling past. Not to mention the insinuation that all teachers have some 'unnatrual' inclination towards children.BTW- Reports said he has a son. You sick Lying Assholes!
As an MI'er,along with many others in the States around IL, The Olympics would have been a Huge shot in the Arm for what has ailed Us for the last few decades. The Olympics would have had a ripple effect in the region. So cheering the loss of our Bid, reveals an utter disdain for those of us struggling to survive in the Rust Belt. 'Boner' and 'Cant her' are cheering over their own constituents loss. that is not going to sit well with those laid off construction workers, steel workers, assembly line workers or any other industry which could be put back to work for at least the next 7 yrs getting ready for the Games.
so they've insulted every female of every race and culture. The cops and teachers, and those citizens who honor them. Of course the entire Dem party and even an entire region of voters. Brilliant!

LETS START WITH BRAD REED'S:

"For reasons that I don’t understand -- perhaps it’s subconscious karmic payback for murdering children in a past life -- I feel compelled to read a lot of right-wing blogs."

WHAT? THIS IS PURE STUPIDITY, SORRY.

PEOPLE:

WHY ARE WE LETTING THE BRAD REED'S TAKE US DOWN THIS ROAD OF DISTRACTION??

ARE WE NOT PLAYING INTO THE HANDS OF THE RIGHT BY PUBLISHING THIS NONSENSE AND THEN PONTIFICATING ABOUT IT?

THEY WANT US TO BE DISTRACTED. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT. PUTTING US ON THE DEFENSE, INSTEAD OF THE OFFENSE.

WE KNOW WE HAVE TO DITCH OBAMA. WHO DO WE HAVE FOR 2012? SHOULD WE NOT START SUPPORTING THEM NOW?

CAN WE TALK ABOUT POSITIVE STUFF INDIVIDUALS, NOT THE DEMOCRAT PARTY, IS DOING?

WHAT ABOUT DENNIS KUCINICH? HE'S CONSISTENT IN HIS VOTES FOR THE PEOPLE AND THE MAJORITY OF HIS DONATIONS ARE FROM THE PEOPLE.

THIS TIME, LET'S START TALKING HIM UP AND SUPPORTING HIM AND WITH MONEY. FORGET ABOUT THE MOVE-ONS, ETC. THEY ARE IN THE POCKET OF THE DEMOCRAT ELITIST PARTY. VOTE FOR THE INDIVIDUAL, NOT THE PARTY. IT'S A BUSINESS LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE.

GIVE ME ONE REASON, OTHER THAN IF WE DON'T VOTE FOR HIM AND SUPPORT HIM, THAT HE CANNOT WIN?

These people are stone cold serious, and some of their leaders have openly called for the overthrow of the US constitution (in order to establish a theocracy). It's estimated that they make up to 23% of the American population. These jackasses aren't talking to those of us who still can think- they're trying to motivate their followers (and it's been well established that the churches behind this cr*p practice thought control and despise science education!!!)

People- we need to be AFRAID of these jerks- only a couple of years ago they tried to eliminate separation of Church and State in Florida, and also tried to have the state collect funds for Dobson's Focus on the Family (the Florida branch). Some of them are even training their children to be "Warriors for God"- including weapons and tactics training!

Remember- "Jesus Camp"!

HILARIOUS?

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I don't see much here that's funny. They are a constant distraction and obstruction to getting things done. For 8 years they had a leader (Bush) who kept them in line. He gave the marching orders and they followed. They now have their new found freedom, courtesy of Obama voters. I didn't vote for Obama so that ignorant people could suddenly say and do whatever they pleased and call it free speech. I'm not entertained by it. We have 2 wars going on, massive unemployment, close to 50 million Americans without Health Insurance and rising crime all around the country. The 'entertainers' know nothing about any of it. They are ignorant, and proud of it. Beneath the stupidity is a mean streak. Sorry to be so glum, but for as random as they appear to be, they are ripe and ready for a leader. Their behavior says it all. They are not independent thinkers, they need guidance. When they find it, I don't think we'll be amused. Chaos never lasts long, someone comes in to take control. Then they become a powerful force. I'm not a paranoid type, but these people scare me. ANNA

The conservative protesters are no different than the KKK. They fear that their imaginary advantages as a white person will be taken away. But they are not plantation bosses who had their belongings turned over to the slaves. Conservatives will still have their fair share of the American pie under the new president. But if they refuse to accept reality the anti-psychotic drug manufacturers will become wealthier.

The idea that a black or brown poor person might get one single penny of the Republicans' money via taxes enrages them. That is their only motivation, to keep their money from poor minorities. That's it, nothing else.

The adrenalin and emotions are running high. This last week, Huckabee, the man with the appearance of calmness and paternal reassurance, stated, without a blink or quiver, that we ( The United States of America ) have only one option, to Bomb the Nation of Iran. I, on the other hand, see infinite options. One being, negotiation, persuasion, strategy, seeking and planning with the world's best minds, to find non-massacre solutions And by the way, if we had that Department of Peace, the one the President promised us, hundreds of options would already be on the drawing boards and listed in the media. In the immediate present, every nation promising to provide all the energy Iran needs, would be less expensive than producing and dropping nuclear weapons on their Nuke Sites and Civilian populations. In the long run, and I wonder why I have to remind everyone, that the number one reason arms manufacturers and governments in collusion with arms manufacturers justify the production and stockpiling of Nukes is as a deterent and protection from others with Nukes. Therefore: If we give other worried/paranoid/realistic governments the right to prove we don't have "Nukes", in exchange for our right to prove they don't have them either, then, no one has to worry about the other side, and their will be no need to produce them. "We have International Arms Agreements" and they don't work. Oh yeah? Which agreement allows every other nation on earth the right to all your secret hiding places, as proof, you haven't got one. To get everyone on board to agree to this failsafe method, you'ld have to start out with an intelligent group of individuals enlisting Nations to become members, starting with Lichstenstein, El Salvador and Haiti; counties without Nukes, and then build momemtum till this group of Nations, collectively could bully the hold outs, into succumbing to reason. Because, we all know that individual civilians of each nation are, in the majority, against the continued production, stockpiling and use of such indicriminate killing tools. Another thing that bothered me, call me an odd egg, but, Huckabee's invited musical group, Lynard Skynard, and he plugging there new album, "God and Guns"? Hello, what's wrong with this picture? Jesus would be bitch-slapping Huckabee on T.V. for all the world to see. I can hear him now, "I'll show you rapture, you M.F. you." OK, maybe I've surpassed my morning coffee limit. But, you know what I mean. Thank you. tom

Look to their preachers. The preachers can be tied to Big Business and Old Money through various organizations.

They get marching orders- the people at the "Town Hall meetings" were not random.

I believe that they're being stirred to violence- but in a way that if it fails, the preachers (and the organizations and upstream) can deny responsibility.

Don't forget- nearly a third of the people in New Jersey believe that Obama IS or COULD BE the "AntiChrist".

That comes from somewhere...

You mention you read conservative blogs but the first crank you mention, John Derbyshire the link is to Huffington Post.

I could not find an article related to what you are referring to at NRO about suggesting women should be barred from voting or anything related to the titles given at Huffpo.

Do you have a link to the article Derbyshire wrote?

what motivates conservatives these days?
start with the 'end-times' prophecies.
move on to 'money'.
add in utter lack of education and no desire to change said lack.
and top off with utter disconnection with any form of real life.
the 'top 5' you quote are really in some ways the rational ones compared to their followers. the ones you quote actually use complete sentences and sometimes big words. their followers think and speak in shorthand symbols and redefined code words. they deal in rumor and innuendo, without even realizing that it is rumor or innuendo. they believe rumor is truth and innuendo is news.
and their motivation is to become powerful. that's the scary part.

Having read all the above comments. I seek to put in my own two cents, hopefully adding something valuable to the discussion today.I speak from a position of having experienced the turmoil that has been American politics for many years and cycles. Our country has seen the rise and fall of many demi-gods and anti tolerance idiots through the years. And yet, never has there been such a group of anti peace, anti compassion , anti American speakers and crusaders at the forefront of influential hate speech in the history of our country as we have now. The situation is frightening...while inspiring in me, the will to do all I can to remove these humans from positions of power in my life, and to impede the message of these traitors within our society. We must all become active in our quest for peace and justice, non forgiving in our efforts to cleanse the nature of the dialog, and to prepare to beat back the ignorance and outright lies of the right wing, while learning to promote tolerance and love in all our actions.

the right wing going of the deep end would be a good thing. what I do not understand is that Americans just take whatever is being done to them. Banks getting rich from your tax dollars while people die because they cannot afford health care. where is your outrage? where is the change you voted for? why are you not demonstrating and fight for what is right? the right wing fringe are yelling at the top of their lungs and people are paying attention, well, would it not work for the left?
just a few questions from a concerned Canadian.

I read right-wing blogs and posts all the time, can't resist them. I also keep notes because this stuff is too good to ignore. I take an oath before God that this is true, tonight I was reading a forum on how vile it is of the government to mandate vaccination (or any other public health measure) and somebody posted that if our Founding Fathers had wanted Americans to be innoculated against contagious disease, they would have included that in the Constitution. (I have at hand a copy of the Constitution and, what do you know, it doesn't mention general anesthesia or MRIs either.)

Re # 2, Bill Sparkman, who had worked as an undegreed substitute teacher while going to school, did in fact complete his Bachelor's and would have become, if he had not already, a credentialed teacher. His picture in his cap and gown has been widely shown. And he was indeed a father to his son, named Josh. Have we reached the point where anyone who likes to work with kids and is good at it is under suspicion of being a child predator?

Nice essay, Mr. Reed. You should do this type of summary weekly!

The past few months, I have spent a lot of time reading and putting my 2 cents in at, yahoo buzz. The extreme radical right wingers are doing their best to convince the readers that, the majority of the nation are, aligned in their way of thinking. They all hate me, I think its funny!

Have we reached the point where anyone who likes to work with kids and is good at it is under suspicion of being a child predator?

among the right wing activists. the cheering of Chicago loss of Olympics showing their 13 year old mentality should be mentioned frequently as revealed their inner nature.
