The warm months of 1969 came to be known as the "summer of love." Surely the past months of 2009 will go down in history as the "summer of hate" -- with fearsome crowds of thuggish, and almost entirely white, conservatives railing against Barack Obama's stimulus package and proposals for health care reform and "cap-and-trade" climate legislation.

At least, those are the ostensible targets.

But the overheated rhetoric masks a more fundamental complaint about the perceived loss of white America's tribal power in an era with the first African American president.

At this summer's "tea parties," town hall meetings and the recent march on Washington organized by Fox News talker Glenn Beck, signs with Obama portrayed as an African witch doctor, complete with a bone through his nose, and signs claiming Obama is the rightful president only of Kenya and other thinly disguised racial markers have been commonplace.

Clearly, these demonstrations of inchoate rage are about more than public policy. Former President Jimmy Carter stepped into the fray this week, stating the obvious: "intensely demonstrated animosity" toward Obama, the 39th president said, is "based on the fact that he is a black man." This elicited a torrent of angry denunciations from right-wing media.

While Carter might have overstated the degree to which the anger is motivated by racial animus -- saying it was behind "an overwhelming portion" of the criticisms lobbed at Obama -- it's clear not only from the street protests, but also from the rhetoric employed by the conservative media elite that racism is indeed alive in "post-racial America," and is certainly ratcheting up the temperature of the country's discourse.

We took a tour of that discourse and present 10 recent examples of the kind of racially charged barbs that played a part in Carter's statement.

1. Oh no! Evil monkeys stole our balls!

You know who really had their act together? British colonists in India. But oppressing a country of hundreds of millions for more than a century was not without its dangers. For instance, sometimes monkeys descended on the Brits' golf courses and stole their balls.

And that it is how former House Whip Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., chose to illustrate the challenges facing conservatives in the Obama era. Friday, AlterNet's Adele Stan reported Blunt's words to the conservative Values Summit:

"... Something they didn't anticipate was monkeys came running out of the jungle, and they grabbed the golf balls ... and they might throw the golf ball back at you. ... So for this golf course, and this golf course and this golf course only, they passed a rule, and the rule was, you have to play the ball where the monkey throws it."

The crowd roared with laughter.

He went on to say that he recently saw a bumper sticker he liked that read: "Don't let Obama find out what comes after a trillion."

2. Rush Limbaugh, worried about future of favorite cookie, blows off steam by making racist joke about Obama

In a July broadcast, Rush Limbaugh voiced his displeasure -- nay, outrage -- about food-safety advocates potentially "going after" Oreo cookies. Added the great wit: "Might have to put that off until Obama's out of office, but they'll eventually go after Oreos."

Get it?

3. When you weren't looking, Obama snuck reparations into the health care bill

This is why we have to be vigilant. According to Beck and Limbaugh, Obama is using health reform to force reparations for slavery from white America. Beck: "Everything getting pushed through Congress -- including this health care bill -- is transforming America. And it's all driven by President Obama's thinking on one idea: reparations. ... He believes in all the 'universal' programs because they ‘disproportionately affect' people of color" (All of whom Obama knows personally, cause … you know … ).

Not one to be outdone, Limbaugh cast a wider net, saying: "Obama's entire program is reparations!"

4. Addendum: When you weren't looking, Obama snuck affirmative action in the health care bill

Where do we go from here?

These bigots have been around, and they have the audacity and the indecency to make fools of themselves. No democrat or liberal will ever get their votes no matter what. It comes down to race and ethnicity hands down. Alas, I believe that this element is destructive towards the republican party.
So, here's to hoping the rednecks stay the forefront of the party- so that we can stay in power.
No amount of intelligent discussion about how racism is illogical will ever change these peoples minds. I learned to cope with a president for eight years that operated on similar bigoted principles. We have committed atrocities to the Arabic world- let's remember how dangerous the rednecks can be when they obtain a presidency!

I do not have to look at video of the Ohio 2008 rallies or read the signs at a Tea Bagger rally to know that racism is the biggest motivational factor behind the outrage of the mobs in the streets. As a white, professional southern male of 46, I was often times treated to the hate speech of my co-workers, neighbors and even family members due to the fact that my color and profile led people to believe that I shared their prejudices. I attended a high school that was roughly 30% white when I graduated and played sports and hung out with people of color daily and worked in an industry that employed about 95% of the workforce with non-whites. My natural inclination coupled with my daily exposure to people who did not look like me forged a deep respect for the differences we had and highlighted the commonalities we shared. Therefore, I feel that I have a keen sense to spot the obvious motivations of the mobs and thier motivators who know that it is easy to rally this type of person with sometimes veiled and often times, obvious racial talking points.
I will not fall for the logic that it is about the issues because the root cause of many of the current problems fall in the lap of the administrations and representatives who have been in power over the last 20 years. Though I voted for Obama, I have many problems with how he has handled several issues. I will more than likely vote outside the two party system in 2012. I would dare say that the so-called conservatives who are on the street would really try to throw out the entire lot and vote outside the Republican ticket. I would also venture that the majority of those who would answer the call of the likes of Glenn Beck are too blind with rage and suffer from unrational fear to see that they are really supporting the very institutions that they feel they are rallying against.

but the only one talking about race seems to be the media.

Demonstrators on both sides have of late insulted our President personally.

It seems to have started with Bush and it opened the flood gates. Respect for the office is gone!

The nuts have escaped and seem to be battling each other while America looks on amused and the media makes up stories to pump up their bottom line! Nothing like a little "yellow press" to get ones financials out of the "red".

I'm convinced that it all comes down to one thing. Who reads? (Not who knows how to read, but who takes time to read.)

Nearly every publication from Readers' Digest to AARP Magazine to Newsweek support big changes in health care and dismiss the notion of death panel--most even supporting the public option.

People acting crazy like this are those who get their information from commercials and talk radio. They don't read.

Why don't these people, and others, understand that Obama himself declares we now live in a post-racial society, which is nonsense, and Obama himself has no problem supporting racist institutions and racist policies.

Booker T. Obama not only ain't no socialist he also does not care or advocate for the struggles of the black man/woman/child.

But he is presiding over the largest military budget in history, just established one of the largest CIA stations in history and has thrown all who speak up about black struggles under the bus. Oh yeah and happens to sign off on the deaths of brown-skinned people in Iraq and Af/Pak whilst expanding operations in Africa.

What a guy.

What they hate to do is ponder. Reason requires waiting for the neuroceptors to settle down. Tell me another story Unca Rush. These are addicts.

All ten of these things can be taken one of two ways. Obviously, you've chosen to take them as racism.

People like YOU are the ones making racism an issue.

And, why in the world are you listening intently to people like Rush Limbaugh anyway? He's an idiot.

I knew that those "old white men(?)" were terrified when they went after Michelle Obama and her "toned arms", but for real their hysteria at the thought that "they don't have the power" is frightening! I realize that many in this nation are fearful about the direction this nation has been going, 2 failed wars of choice, trillions on the bail-out, and still no relief for Main Street - yet I am amazed that people have not just forgotten, but have obfuscated the truth - George W. Bush started these wars, the economy which was already indebted to China, collapsed under his watch, deregulation (for the corporate estate) continued under his watch, and $700Bn had already been given away under his watch! So exactly why are these very white men, who were applauding and cheerleading under GWB complaining about?!?!?!

What ever happened to the "Fairness Doctrine"? That piece of paper that said both sides of the story need to be heard! Right now all we hear from are the loud mouthed revisionist, contortionists on the right! They have never met a truth that they haven't twisted around, outright lied about, jumped over, have done cartwheels around, etc.! Is this what happens when the Corporation owns the media? Because so many are trying to keep their jobs, they no longer are willing to report the truth - that the sell-outs (Newt, Rush, Dick, Orrin Hatch, Jim DeMint, Max Baucus, etc.) have been prostituting for Corporate America as they sell out Main Street with the policies that are written by the Corporate lobbyists, and they vote for!

Why don't these people see that they are voting against their own interests?! And why aren't more people willing to boycott the sponsors of these loud-mouthed idiots? It's time for people of good conscious to start making a stand against the loud-mouthed liars! Will you?

It's not that he's Black- it's that he is Bi racial
Posted by: Purple Girl on Sep 21, 2009 6:44 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Although some racist imagery has been used against the First Lady, far more venomous Rhetoric and imagery has been leveled at Her Husband of both Black and White descent.
Why no outrage from the Racists about Michelle enlisting the help of school children to plant a garden. You'd think the Racist would have had a Field day with that image- A Black woman overseeing White children 'in the Field' nope. Nor do we hear any outrage about indoctrination when she addresses school children during school hours.
What these people are really pissed about, and terrified of, is the 'deluted' White 'gene'. Obama is not part white because of some long ago rape of a slave by a plantation owner. he is the direct Product of a White woman choosing a Black man, over 'one of her own'.
Lets Remember it was not only Hitlers fear that Pure jews would take over the World- as much as their 'insideous' interbreeding with non jews (much like his own parents). He was encouraging and supporting White, blonde haired Blue eyed woman to get pregnant by other 'Aryan' men, instead of men who looked like himself (and of 'mixed' genes)
The Fact that Obama's skin is Black is a constant Reminder that the Black 'gene' won out- it was 'stronger' than his white 'gene'.
Don't think these people don't comprehend Darwins premise of 'Survival of the Fittest' - They do and that's what has them scared shitless. Whites have never been the Predominate race in the World and their numbers are dwindling at a faster rate then ever before. Not only because of Bi Racial Couples- but also because of Homosexuality. White gays and Lesbians are not adding 'to the White Gene pool'.Interesting the Pro Life protests at Women clinics are never in the heart of predominately Black or Hispanic Urban areas.
What these 'White supremeists' are proving is the fact they have No confidence in their own race, that White Traits are 'weak' and unable to defeat the other stronger racial 'traits. They need to Derail Affirmative action because it levels the playing field, they feel, they will not be able to compete on.They require the 'Good Ol Boy' system of Discrimination because they are inept and ill equipped to survive such equality.
these white folks are die hard 'Evolutionist' who see their own race going 'Extinct'- and they are shitting their pants. What we are witnessing is the Death Throes of a 'species' and their hysterical attempts to remain relevant in this new 'environment'

Did you guys ever stop to think that you have nothing to write about but bad Republicans because it's been decades since the Democrats did anything good? Obviously, we are supposed to be motivated to defend Democrats against the assaults of the clearly wrong Right. Obviously, we are supposed to ignore that the Democrats are quite obviously an integral part of the clearly wrong Right. Obviously, we are intended to ignore that the most effective result of the Right being so clearly wrong is that the Democrats' wrongness is consequently made somewhat unclear. But pointing this out over and over again is getting old. Alternet is getting boring.

So, it seems that a gentleman buys a new car. It's got all the latest technology - including voice commands for everything.

He's driving down the road and playing with the Radio. "Jazz" he says, and the sweet strains of Miles Davis waft through the speakers.

He tries saying "Rock" - and Geddy Lee's unmistakable voice pierces the air.

Just then, a he's cut off by a teenager in a red Camaro. "Asshole!" he screams...

...and the radio cuts to, "Good Morning, Friends, this is Rush Limbaugh!"

You too are presenting the other side in extremes. Where is the balance that some people have joined tea bag movements because they are unhappy with government bailouts and are not racist at all. Labeling them all as extremists and refusing to listen to their point of view only pushes them further off the edge. I have taken to reading many perspectives and some who support the tea baggers say that racism is being emphasized (I am not saying some of it is not real because I believe it is) to divide and conquer. The last thing the power-elite want is all the people joined together. I think they may have a good point!

False Claims = Racial Politics

What if someone were to read this and conclude these examples are filled with distortions, and therefore not an attempt to expose racial politics, but to engage in it?

Because a reasonable person could conclude you’ve deliberately distorted the messages of your targets. Which leaves the question: Why did you do it?

You do it, obviously, for political purposes. To undermine the opposition. You’re making racially divisive assertions in order to further a political agenda. That’s commonly known as “playing racial politics.” You are playing racial politics.

It has never worked for liberals

I really can't say why, but where liberals used to own the humor business back in the 1960's and 70's, they really don't understand it now. Of course, these writers at altered net, like the media matters philosophers and poets, take any and every joke that a talker on the right makes, write it out on paper, and say, "Is that funny?" "Let's take it out of context."

So, nobody expects anything but anger and hatred from these political websites that only sell hatred and anger - even the fear is just to sell & promote anger.

But what floored me was that with all the "funny" left-wingers out there like Bill Mahre, why couldn't the left make talk radio work? It's been said that all they want to sell is - again! - hate and anger.

Well any of us could have told thrm anger and hate are only going to hold anybody for about tewn minutes, and then you'd better have some humor or news content ot something different.

All the Limbaughs and Hannitys know that, but the left never has.

Rush Limbaugh's Official Obama Criticizer
Posted by: MJ Fields on Sep 21, 2009 12:01 PM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
James "Bo Snerdley" Golden, who happens to be African American, is Limbaugh's call screener. Snerdley has been designated the show's Official Obama Criticizer--medically certified with highly concentrated levels of slave blood, certified to criticize. Rush has given Golden/Snerdley a segment where he offers critical commentary of Obama in an ebonic voice.
There is no reason why black people can't be critical of Obama just because Obama is (half) black, but I think Golden/Snerdley is only denigrating himself by perpetuating cultural stereotypes. After being in Limbaugh's employ for 20+ years, I wonder if Golden/Snerdley knows enough to feel humiliated.

O'Purple Lips: Not Racist?
Posted by: Lilly on Sep 21, 2009 5:13 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Here are some bits from my notes on townhall.com, a right-wing website that is a sort of hobby of mine:

O'Purple Lips (the President)
Obaboo (same)
Mulatto Messiah (same)
racist black Commie agitator (same)
drug addict, drug dealer (same)
gang member, Chicago street thug (same)
born in Kenyan slum (same)
Aunt Jemima (the First Lady)
The Gorilla (same)
white trash attracted to black men (Obama's
mother)
conceived in back seat of car (Obama)
makes white people his slaves (Obama)
wants health care as slave reparation (Obama)

The Obama children's live-in grandmother is described as welfare trash sponging off the American people.

Perhaps the most frequent racist comment is that Obama did not deserve his degrees, honors, jobs, or office and got them only via Affirmative Action. We are often told that Obama is the puppet of his white "handlers" and that he cannot speak without a teleprompter (reading speeches written by white people). One post said that Obama is "just a happy-go-lucky black buck who likes to ride around on Air Force One while leaving the business of government, which he does not understand, to his advisors---that is why he appointed so many".

A common townhall accusation is that Democrats are racists because they support Affirmative Action and Civil Rights law---the argument is that a TRULY unprejudiced person puts everyone on the same footing, thus no preferences or set-asides.

What a guy.
