Finally the Feds Crack Down on Right-Wing Terrorists

When the Department of Homeland Security warned in April that the financial crisis and Barack Obama's election were inflaming right-wing extremists, many conservatives were outraged. But a spate of high-profile murders this year has prompted questions about whether the government should have been more proactive. In April, Richard Poplawski, a 22-year-old frequenter of white supremacist websites, was charged with fatally shooting three Pittsburgh cops. In May, former militiaman Scott Roeder was accused of gunning down abortion doctor George Tiller (he pleaded not guilty this week). In June, 88-year-old neo-Nazi James von Brunn allegedly killed an African American security guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. Only then did the government spring into action. Later that month, federal agents in three states moved against a prominent far-right leader and his associates, with almost no attention from the national press.
At 6:45 a.m. on June 25, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) arrested Dennis Mahon on domestic terrorism charges stemming back to a crime committed more than five years ago. An indictment from a federal grand jury in Phoenix, unsealed in late June, charges Mahon with constructing a pipe bomb that exploded in Scottsdale city office that promotes racial and cultural diversity. The blast severely injured the office's director and hurt two other staffers. Mahon and his twin brother, Daniel, were also accused of conspiring to build and send the bomb, and with disseminating training materials on domestic terrorism.
Also on June 25, the ATF arrested Robert Joos -- a 56-year-old white supremacist preacher in Missouri -- in connection with the Mahon investigation. According to court documents, Dennis Mahon had told an undercover agent that Joos was an expert on bomb making. (In the end, Joos was only charged with illegal possession of weapons.) On the same day, ATF agents also raided the northern Indiana home of the 71-year-old Tom Metzger, the head of White Aryan Resistance (WAR) and a longtime associate of Dennis Mahon.

They had more important fish to fry.

TUCSON, AZ—A federal grand jury returned a five-count indictment against James A. Marshall, 63, and Karen S. Marshall, 56, both of Green Valley, Ariz., for Conspiracy to Commit Fraudulent Voting and Fraudulent Voting. The indictment alleges that the Marshalls voted in more than one state during the November 2008 U.S. Presidential election.
The pair will receive a summons to appear for an arraignment on the charges in U.S. District Court in Tucson, on August 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Marshall.
The indictment alleges that James and Karen Marshall voted in both Kansas and Arizona, by way of early ballot, for the November 2008 general election. According to the indictment, the Marshalls represented that they were residents of Arizona on the Arizona early ballot application, and, around the same time, also represented they were residents of Kansas on the Kansas early ballot application. As a result of their representations, the Marshalls received ballots from both Arizona and Kansas. The Marshalls returned their Arizona ballots after signing a sworn statement that they reside in Arizona, and had not voted "and will not vote in this election in any other state during the calender year of this sffidavit...."
After voting in Arizona, the Marshalls then returned their Kansas ballots and affirmed that they were legal residents of Kansas.
---------
The couple were well-known Republicans in a rural county and had moved to a suburb of Phoenix, to a swank subdivision where their house was a block from the private golf course. The Freepers went wild over this one, certain that the feds had uncovered ACORN up to dirty tricks. As usual, it was just two of their own.
Kansas has gone "D" but once since 1936 (for Johnson, 1964) and Arizona voted for Truman in '48 and Clinton won in '96. Kansas hasn't elected a Democratic senator since 1932.

Several years ago, while on a trip to Washington.D.C., I saw a local news program segment about a weekend outing by people who called themselves the "Good Old Boy Network". They represented local police around the region as well as the entire alphabet of federal law enforcement agencies in D.C. It was a white only weekend that culminated, on Saturday night, with a cross lighting.
You wonder why it took so long to catch Mahon. I wonder that the case was investigated AT ALL.

This Homeland Security report talks about bombing and arson (where people could potentially be killed, whether intentional or not), as well as cyber attacks that cost companies money (equaling lost jobs) -

With more news about sending troops into Afghanistan, anti-war groups from left and right will surely rise up.

I wish Abraham Lincoln had had a nuclear weapon to finish off the confederacy. Today these confederacy holdouts wouldn't exist. They would be as peace loving as the Japanese are today.

As for the lack of publicity, in criminal prosecutions, that is often a good thing. It diminishes the whole pre-trial publicity problem. So, as long as law enforcement has been scrupulous in building a solid case, there will likely be a much better chance of conviction and meaningful prison sentences.

As long as we're on the subject of right-wing crazies, what's happening with the investigation and prosecution of the bush terror machine? My guess would be not a goddam thing. As usual, the big fish swim away.

What evidence for a crackdown is there?
The federal government IS right-wing terrorism.
This weak, delusional writing is what prompted me to stop reading Mother Jones years ago.
Best Wishes.

There have already been three attempts against President Obama's life not widely known because it would only 'inspire' more crazy 'patriots'.
Beck et al are breeding hate and spreading poison in our society.
GLENN BECK ET AL ARE THE TERRORISTS!
Including the wretched miserable fucking racist bastards posting their shitty ass racist republican talking points among us on Alternet.
Freedom of speech! BAH! They are hate and fear mongering!
And they want our President DEAD.
And just imagine the riots and destruction that will surely come to our country if that aweful day should ever come. The terrorists don't care.
May God have mercy on their pathetic souls.
And please excuse my vulgar language but under the circumstances it is suitable, at least IMO. I became a democrat watching black people being mowed down with water hoses on tv as a kid during the civil rights movement. The same sorts that did that want this president dead.
