Will the Tragedy of Michael Jackson's Life Be Inherited By His Kids?
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest headlines via email.
To me, the most arresting image of Michael Jackson was President George H.W. Bush citing him as a role model for young black men. It was 1990 and Jackson was at the height of his fame. "Man in the Mirror" had been released two years earlier. Jackson had not yet gone into full white-face disguise, but the handsome little brown boy of his first album had long since entered the bizarro phase of rhinestone gloves. I wondered then what on earth about Jackson could ever be a role model for anyone. Musical savant though he was, Jackson was, almost from the beginning, a tragic figure -- so obviously trapped in that mirror, forever reflecting what others wanted him to be.
In the wake of his death, many have hailed his "crossover appeal." There is no doubt that his musical acumen led to the integration of MTV; but that "appeal" had a more sinister undertone. If Elvis was "the White Negro," so Michael fashioned himself into "the Negro Caucasian." He literally erased himself before our eyes, his nose slowly disappearing, his skin fading to ghostly pallor, his voice growing higher and whispier, his body evaporating to a dry husk of barely a hundred pounds at the time of his death. It was hard not to be fascinated by him as he molted through all possible confusions of gender, race and sexuality. But his transgressivity was more than just theater; he mimed a narrative of constant paradox and infinite suffering.
By now the stories of that suffering are well documented: Jackson's body was scarred from the abuse that his father, Joe, a former boxer, administered to him when he was a small child. Marlon, Michael's brother, wrote of one particularly chilling incident: his father held Michael upside down by one leg while punching him repeatedly. There are the stories of his father creeping in through his bedroom window at night wearing a fright mask -- apparently to teach him not to leave the window open. Joe Jackson has denied ever beating any of his children, though he freely admits "whipping" them with straps and belts. According to him, "You beat someone using a stick."
And so it can be no wonder that Michael Jackson grew up to resemble a walking talking fright mask, playing with the putty of bodies, of youth, of childhood, of kindness, of trauma, of forgiveness. Even his trial for child molestation was a paragon of sadness, as Jackson characterized taking children into his bed as providing safety, comfort, cuddles -- his bed figured as shelter from, not the site of, violation.
If that much is not a mystery, what does remain inexplicable is the absence of social, ethical or legal limit to the excesses of Jackson family life. Michael Jackson was addicted to so many painkillers that one Los Angeles pharmacy recently sued him for back payments totaling $100,000 -- or ten months of prescriptions at $10,000 a month. It leaves one to wonder who the medical professionals were behind this kind of mind-boggling malpractice. Who, for that matter, were the medical professionals who performed so many plastic surgeries on him that his nose ultimately collapsed into his skull? Doctors are ruled by an ethical obligation to “do no harm.” Medicine is a practice, not a commodity funhouse filled with new noses and chins and feel-good opiates to be issued upon demand, like goodies from a Pez dispenser.
Fortunately, the question of medical complicity in Jackson's death is beginning to percolate in the media. Perhaps, too, the children's custody will be more closely scrutinized. For if Michael Jackson's suffering is at an end, not so for his children. It is extremely troubling to learn that Michael Jackson's mother, Katharine -- and therefore her depraved husband, Joe -- has temporary custody of them. How sad it was to see Joe Jackson's disjointed, weirdly self-promoting, unnervingly narcissistic interview at the Black Entertainment Awards three days after his son's demise, an occasion he used to push his nascent record company.

Perhaps we can also see the deficiencies in our culture by the way we treat our celebrities. Despite their material success, their fate often seems as grim as that of the poor, albeit a whole lot more bizarre.
Even though he was one of the most unique and remarkable people ever to walk the planet, Michael Jackson ended up desperate, isolated, and in pain. This is the fate to which we consign all too many of our greatest celebrities. As often than not, we wind up pitying people like Michael when we find out how they lived. Except for the vast wealth of superstars, the poor in America wind up sharing many of the same types of misery. That's quite an accomplishment. How did we create a society which sort-changes our citizens at both the top and the bottom?

As for the kids, I think they should be set up with a trust fund, and found normal, decent parents as far away from any member of that screwed-up family as possible.
As for the old man, I don't doubt that their early fame would have occurred without his drive to succeed. The way to settle it is to build him a giant palace, lock him in there with all of the lions, gorillas, hyenas and jungle parasites from Michael's zoo, and throw away the key.

Problem is that your celeberty and wealth may make you become trapped. MJ made statements that he was sad he just couldn't take a walk in a park with his kids. I am quite sure he had huge fears of them being kidnapped by nutcases, attacked by enemies, especially racists and those that believed he was guilty of sexual abuse of children. Money cannot buy a normal childhood, as MJ tried to do as an adult in his wierd ways.

MJ's kids: I would say, keep Joe Jackson away from them. He certainly doesn't inspire my confidence. However, that's going to be kinda hard, them being with Michael's mother. I think they need to be with a less dysfunctional family, and above all, with someone who loves them and doesn't want to exploit them as being "Michael Jackson's kids".

Great, now you sound like the Bible thumpers touting how terrible science is because after all god's creation (humans) was the perfect design. Can't you understand the hypocrisy embedded in this statement you made? Technology is the human equivalent for evolution. Should we have never created fire and progressed the human race? And btw did you take a survey to see how many people would rather have lighter skin children- I think your assumption is wrong and racist. Go blog on Fox News.

Major offensive in Afghanistan offends many, as US troops withdraw from Iraq.
Experts say Michael jacksons is still dead and left all his debts to his children.
US jobless figures worst than expected many people still working.
Fiscal emergency in California Arnold Schwarzenegger cant count.
World condemns leaders of banana repulics, business writes them a cheque.
Much of the worlds news for the last week has been dedicated hahah, to the fact that Michael jackson is still dead, many experts in death have stated that he will remain dead and that resurrection is extremely unlikely unless it turns out he is either the Antichrist or the second coming.. In his will which has been filed in a Los Angeles court, he leaves his entire debt to his family .The singer who died last week also stipulates his body is to be melted down and turned into toys, so children can play with him for a change. Meanwhile, figures show Jackson had the three top-selling US albums last week - each shifting more than 100,000 copies.
His record campany is said to be overjoyed er i mean devestated by his death…
In other news ..The number of jobs lost in the US last month came in at 467,000, which was much lower than had been expected. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of jobless people has risen by 7.2 million, the Department of Labor went on not to say, “The job market is terrible. It’s as bad as we’ve seen in our lifetime,” but its not going to be enough if we want to save the planet , I m calling on all gainfully employed people to give unemployment a chance , just try it for a while, think of the trees youll be saving , the melting ice caps youll protect, “The light at the end of tunnel is that the recession may be longer and deeper than predicted ” but dont wait for it , go home now, stop working , stop shopping and everything will be much better much sooner
The governor of California has declared a fiscal emergency in the US state to address a budget deficit of some $24.3bn (£14.5bn). California has been one of the US states hardest hit by the recession. The moves comes after state legislators missed a 1 July deadline to approve a budget for the coming financial year.
Many people claim Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger caused The emergency because he cant count. These stories are outrageous I have a large staff of very clever people who count for me, also i can count with the help of my fingers..one two 3 4 5 once i cought a fish alive 6…7….er well come back to that story later
Leaders of banana republics have tried many ways to hang on to power over the years coups, rigged elections, military force and others , now it seems other countries apart from America are getting in on the act..The newly installed government in Honduras has rejected international calls to restore ousted President Manuel Zelaya to power. Elections in Guinea-Bissau to replace assassinated President Joao Bernardo Vieira are to go to a second round, and Niger’s President Mamadou Tandja has undermined a decade of good government in his attempts to stay in power beyond the legal limit by dissolving the constitutional court and parliament in his bid for a third term. While democratic government s decry this behavior and publicly distance themselves from the regimes, western corporations enjoy nothing more than writing big cheques to these tinpot dictators securing Nigeria oil reserves for peanuts, Honduran tax havens for a song and a handy trans europe drug port in Guinea-Bissauf for CIA er i mean organized crimes cocain shipments
MICHAEL JACKSON STILL DEAD

Some definitions:
A.
1. A drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances.
2. The genre made up of such works.
3. The art or theory of writing or producing these works.
B. A play, film, television program, or other narrative work that portrays or depicts calamitous events and has an unhappy but meaningful ending.
C. A disastrous event, especially one involving distressing loss or injury to life: an expedition that ended in tragedy, with all hands lost at sea.
Let's see now. Not all of "A," as he had full control of his life, and more than most because he was filthy rich.
Not "B," as his life had no meaningful end, even if it were a narrative work.
And definitely not "C," as only he died, and probably of his own free will, either overtly or covertly.
Nope, not a tragedy in any sense of the definition. Only a distraction from the REAL tragedies that have recently taken place, such as in the last eight years, and now continued by Bam Bam in Iraq.

who's paying for lapd for traffic etc for his 'memorial' when the state is issuing iou's???
his 3 kids were never legally adopted by him, so they are orphans... does that limit how they can access the estate... jackson said 'his children' but legally, he has no children based on dna, just I said so...
childrens services needs to step in and remove the kids from this crazy family... going to take lots of therapy for the rest of their lives to straighten them out...
can we please move on now???

This mean-spirited fiction story is full of falsehoods. Where are the sources for all of your conjectures? None of the facts have been determined about Michael Jackson's children regarding their genetic heritage because no DNA tests have been reportedly performed.
If you are going to rely on TMZ.com as your "source," why not cite it?
Secondly, it is well-known that Mr. Jackson had virtiligo and lupus and there are many photos demonstrating the pigment loss. After many years of this disease, the multiple pigments become so cosmetically disfiguring, that many who are afflicted go through "depigmentation" treatments, leaving them ghostly white.
Mr. Jackson's story is an fascinating one and there is so much curiosity about his kids' futures. It seems it would be a simple task to stick to the facts.
Given Mr. Jackson's brutal childhood under his father Joe's hand, it is worrisome that his children are being exposed to Joe (via proximity to his mother Katherine, who currently has custody). The real story here is following biological mother Debbie Rowe's actions, not further sullying Mr. Jackson's name. When Debbie Rowe spoke to reporter Chuck Henry (KNBC4-Los Angeles), she stated that she was strongly considering seeking custody of her two biological children with Jackson. She also said she would take the third child because she didn't want to split up the kids and that she would seek an Order of Protection to keep Joe Jackson away from them.
Please stick to the facts AlterNet.

They're pulling out all the stops for his funeral.
So now America and the world can sit back and enjoy the spectacle. What about the funeral of that guy who got shot in the head by Micheletti's troops? It's ironic that one of Jackson's best known songs talks about "...there are people dying, if you care enough for the living, make a better world for you and for me." - And his funeral is being used to distract from those people dying...well, you know, why should we worry about that, Zelaya was a friend of Hugo Chavez, now he's gone and "freedom has prevailed"....as MJ would say, woo-hoo!

My sister is a nurse and has been amazed at how many lunches, dinners and seminars that are billed as educational (sometimes required by the employer to attend) and are actually just drug companies hosting it to sell a new product and even creating the idea that to NOT PRESCRIBE it would be "inhumane". As if every slight bruise deserves a pill. They are selling this sort of industry norm (lots and lots of drugs for everyone) as some sort of moral obligation and then fattening up the right pockets up top to make sure that message is hammered home from up top at all times so it will roll downhill the same way shit does.
I can support legalization of all drugs for recreational use for adults because at least people would be clear on WHY they are doing them and not be given some false sense of security due to it being prescribed by a doctor. People would no longer hide behind some lame excuse the doctor/drug dealer will help them prop up.
Pretending to be engaging in medical treatment when you are really just catching a buzz is dangerous waters to be in.
Something has to draw attention to this growing problem because the very hospitals and doctors who are the arms of this problem are the ones seeing the higher numbers of overdoses, complications and deaths so dont expect them to sound the alarm.

michael jackson worked hard from early childhood til his end. he produced a significant body of work and was surely one of the more remarkable artists of the past century. while he would likely have produced even more achievements had he not died rather young; his is not truly a tragedy.

"Example, consider the absentminded terrorist who opens a mail bomb returned to him for insufficient postage."
By now it's been reported by enough sources to lend it credibility...Michael Jackson was using the general anesthesia inducing med Propofol for insomnia. Outside of the OR where it can only be administered by a anethesiologist...the only other possible application might be in an execution chamber. Sort of like trying to kill a fly with a nuclear weapon when used to alleviate insomnia.
