Spending $102 Billion a Year on 800 Worldwide Military Bases Is Bankrupting the Country

By Chalmers Johnson, Tomdispatch.com. Posted July 3, 2009.

We're building new "embassies" that run close to $1 billion and host countries keep jacking the rent for existing bases.

The following is an introduction from Tom Engelhardt: Along with postcards of cowboys riding jackalopes and giant berries on flatcars, there's a brand new entry in the American gigantism sweepstakes: an embassy complex to be built in Islamabad, Pakistan, for -- if you assume the normal cost overruns on such projects -- what's likely to be close to a billion dollars. If that doesn't make the U.S. number one in the imperial hubris footrace for all eternity, what will? The question is: with its projected "large military and intelligence contingent," and its "surge" of diplomats, will that embassy also issue the largest visas on the planet?

Here's the strange thing: The embassy story was broken at the end of May by the superb journalists at McClatchy News (in this case, Warren P. Stroebel and Saeed Shah). As part of what Shah, in the Christian Science Monitor, estimates as a staggering "$2-billion-plus price tag on a revamped diplomatic presence for the United States in Afghanistan and Pakistan," they reported that an appropriation of $736 million for embassy construction had quietly made its way through both houses of Congress without a peep from anyone. This news, however, seemed to plunge off a steep cliff into a deep well of silence. Indicative as the Obama administration's decision to build such an imperial monstrosity may be of a longer-term commitment to a wider war in the Af-Pak (as in Afghanistan-Pakistan) theater of operations, it evidently proved of no interest to anyone here.

The story was not widely picked up or played up significantly. Despite the fact that major news operations have been bolstering their staffs in Pakistan, there has been no further reporting on the appropriation, the plans for the embassy, or what it all might mean. As far as I can tell, nowhere in the United States did a mainstream editorial page decry, challenge, or even discuss the development. Charlie Rose didn't gather experts to consider it, nor did the Newshour with Jim Lehrer seem to think it worth exploring. Letters of outrage at the thought of those desperately needed funds heading Islamabad-wards didn't pour into local newspapers (perhaps because few knew it was happening and those who did saw it as just another humdrum story about making the U.S. safer in a dangerous world). I've seen no obvious congressional attempts to oppose the passage of the money. The general attitude is evidently: Been there, done that (in Iraq, as a matter of fact, in the Bush years).

Maybe in a world where near-trillion-dollar bailouts are the norm, a mere three-quarters of a billion for a fortress of an embassy seems like so much chump change, the sort of news that only Democracy Now! would even consider significant. Fortunately, Chalmers Johnson, author of The Blowback Trilogy, and an expert on U.S. military bases abroad, did notice, understood its significance, and has now put it in his gun sights. (Catch my TomDispatch audio interview with Johnson about our Empire of Bases by clicking here). -- Tom Engelhardt

Health care and so-called "economic stimulation" have you befuddled?

Social security is small potatoes against your "progressive" war-exporting, Bush cheerleading President Obama, is it?

Sorry to interject reality into your complex dumbassery. It had to be done by someone...

Really, haven't we been waiting long enough?

Although, to be fair, the $700 billion bailout of a corrupt bankers on Wall Street was an even more wasteful use of taxpayer dollars than is the overseas network of foreign bases.

Likewise, the bloated nuclear and biological weaponry (oh, I mean, 'defense') programs should have gotten the axe long ago - but there's no better time than now. That would save another $50 billion or so (there are lots of hidden costs involved as well).

Please notice that our next biggest military competitor, China, spends 1/10th what we do on the military - and they seem to be getting closer and closer to 'economic overlords' every day - they are the largest single holder of U.S. Treasury securities outside the Federal Reserve, right? Not that they want to see the value of those securities plummet - but still...

Anyway, for starters, how about shutting down the base in Honduras?

Then, maybe we could get on to shutting down the 100? 200? 300? bases that remain in Iraq...

It was wonderful to see the optimism and euphoria that greeted the Obama victory, but all of you holding your breath, waiting for great things to happen, can now breathe normally again! 'Cos it aint gonna happen - not now - not ever.
We have a capitalist economy and Obama is a capitalist; ergo, he will defend capitalism. E.g. billions to the bankers who are responsible for the fuck up;
Maybe I misheard, but I understood that our troops would leave Iraq? - well, not exactly leave as such, but they will move down the road a mile or so!!!
Didn't I hear that the world needs peaceful co-operation between different faiths? - but only when we have killed a few thousand more unacceptable Muslims in a country where we have no right to be, supporting a corrupt puppet leader whose only creditability is his expertise in licking Western Arse. And don't forget the fundamental fact that capitalist economies NEED war to function. (1984 describes it well) Scrapping war footing = massive unemployment + no income from sales of weaponry to SA, Israel, and every other fascist states.
If anything, Obama is more corrupt than Bush. At least we all knew that Bush was insane and had a rough idea who was pulling the strings to make him dance and bought him his colouring books!
Obama promised difference and, above all hope, but has failed to live up to anything. War is expanding with "surge" mentality and yet more innocents are being killed. Bankers, stock-brokers et al are still living exotic life-styles whilst others lose their homes and hope for the future. Expect nothing from Obama, because you will only receive the crumbs from rich-mens tables, you will only be given what capitalism will allow.

I regard the Bush II administration as a botched fascist takeover, so it made sense they would build ridiculously large buildings. It is a classic peccadillo of fascism, and the Bushies were nothing if not Nazi wannabees.

Obama is far from being a fascist, but he seems to have no political will whatsoever. Apparently, if there's a neocon in the room, Obama is putty. :(

is Obama and his band of money for all democrats! It took that moron George Bush 8 years to run up a bill of nearly a trillion$$$ after 2 wars and Katrina.

It took Obama just 4 months to run up a bill that dwarfs that, and he's still spending!

That said we do need to reduce the bases..The less countries we help, the better off we are.

America is never going to be saved until we cure the Military Industrial Complex's addiction to the bulk of our national treasure.

Shut it down totally? That will probably never happen. No politician has the guts to initiate such a thing. But is can be and should be curtailed.

The American people will one day wake up and realize that as long as we are pissing away so much cash on armaments that only make the world a dangerous place in which to live, our social infrastructure will only continue to disintegrate.

Can't have guns 'n' butter, baby!

How can one change by doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Only in America can a low life black man become president of the US. Do you all feel good now? That is exactly the mindset that the wealth creators want you to have. If you work hard, you can become one of them in America. The minute Obama said he was a uniter you should have run for cover. How did you expect to survive two uniters in a row? If you want to make the world a better place, stop spending your money on national offense and start spending your money on national defense. Reagan tried to win one for the Gipper, and his star wars program was squashed, because it was a waste of money, heaven forbid we spend our money on defense. If you want to make nukes obsolete, illuminate the delivery systems. Now who wants to sign a missile defense treaty with me, and I will give you a missile defense system just like mine. Since you are unable to create a third party because you trapped in petty single issue mindsets, the least you could do is stop voting and legitimizing a corrupt government. Let 20% of the people vote and nothing will change except the government would be viewed as illegitimate by the rest of the world, because it does not represent we the people. That would scare the bejesus out of somebody, if you stop being the sheeple you complain about all the time. I guess it does not matter because the planet will solve our problems shortly. So blow the first trumpet because we are unable to stop it. I know it will not happen in your lifetime, so keep on worrying about a paper debt burden you are putting on your children, while you kill them.

All Empires Eventually Fall of Their Own Weight
Posted by: mivince79 on Jul 3, 2009 8:27 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Rome fell because the frontiers of the empire were too vast to sustain. She had to pour all of her treasure into manning the barriers. The tax burdens fell upon those who could least afford the burden. Her armies consisted of unreliable mercenaries. She imported more than she exported. The Roman infrastructure began to crumble. Sound familiar? America needs to get out of the empire business and get out now. It's time for business to follow the flag and not the reverse. We cannot be, we should not be the world's policeman. We must let go of that dangerous illusion. No one nation can command the globe. History offers a bitter lesson who think that empires can go on forever. Let us look inward. Come home, America. Come home to your republican ideals.

I cannot imagine what it must feel like to have foreign troops running around my town, destroying property and life, interfering with commerce, etc. Why are we so complacent and accepting of our military being placed all over the world. Why are we willing to trade our domestic well being for this tyranny in other countries. Perhaps Europeans have a better standard of living because they are not trying to colonize the entire world anymore.

What about the costs of the wars themselves?

The imperial US embassies dotting the "third world" or currently being erected or reinforced are filthy.

But what about the cost of the wars themselves in Iraq and, crazily escalating, in Afghanistan? How many trillions of dollars have they cost and are continuing to cost?

And those mega-expenditures are routinely omitted from actuarial accounts of the US's economic meltdown which is massively impacting working and middle-class Americans, along with those "invisible" Americans who are poor, in-need-of-medical-attention-without insurance, and homeless.

This July 4th, we are organizing a money bomb to get him started with the cash he'll need to win. Anything you can send will get us that much closer to having a real voice of resistance in Congress, along with Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul. It's the most patriotic thing you'll do all day. :)

I have a feeling that this money bomb could be big, so there's also the fun of making history as well if you join with us and donate this July 4th.

U. S. Military worldwide bases

This was a remarkable expose. It's good to see
the facts and figures finally revealed. I spoke
about our imperialistic bases repeatedly during
my camaign 2007-08. That's right, I was a 3rd
Party candidate for President and I mentioned
this outrage of military base expense on my
website; however, no one was listening. The MSN
and the people were mesmerized and intoxicated
with only one candidate. But that's O.K., because now, on so many issues, I can honestly
say: "I told you so". As soon as enough patriotic Americans wake up from their cocoon of denial, there will be a revolution and if
called upon, my colleagues and I will lead
America back onto the right track, with hope,
promise and a copy of the Constitution in our
hands. Thanks again for publicizing this scandal. By the way, at last count, there were
at least 823 'American' military bases and
outposts in every corner of the world!

Great piece. What is remarkable is how passive the great majority of the American public is, in the face of relentless squandering of trillions of US taxpayer dollars on useless weapons, unnecessary overseas military bases, unnecessary wars, etc. etc. Can they be so stupid? The answer, I am sad to say, is most definitely "yes".

and a debilitating drain on the U.S. economy. And don't think for a minute they exist for our national defense or as idiot 'Progressive-Life' claims that they are protected American citizens living abroad. It's an outmoded effort toward "world conquest" (NWO) by the rapacious power elite (who already own, manage, and dictate policy of the USA). And they care not a twit about any of we mere citizens! It's all about more money & more power for those that already have most of both!!! It's the same with American embassies and consulates. Mere 'citizen services' are a bore (& overpriced) and all real interest is dedicated to American business interests or clandestine CIA operations!

I moved overseas soon after the Supreme Court illegally gave the 2000 election to the traitors & mass murderers that prompted the attacks of "9/11" [Bush/Cheney] and I've never regretted leaving. The stolen election, rabid christian oppression, stupid 'drug war', and an extremely modest retirement plan made it the right thing to do, for me. Never been happier...except for the constant stream of bad news, fascistic policies, incompetent leadership, highest levels of corruption & hypocrisy, and rapidly sinking economy that keeps coming out of America. We've all been lied to for the past 50 odd years. Closing most or all of those bases would be a good beginning!

Oh, right, sorry, I forgot. Those programs would benefit 90% of US citizens and they have no power. This was it benefits richest 10% who have all the power.

The political system in US needs to change, until oligarchy is enthroned nothing will change. After all, you cannot beat them by playing according tot heir own rules.

It's bizarre that it hardly gets talked about. So many legislators wring their hands over how much providing a true public health option would be but don't blink at all while authorizing hundreds of billion up to trillions funding Wall Street and of course our grossly, unnecessarily funded military.

It's just another instance where big money talks and the people are left holding the bag.

I do think thet the health care issue has caaused many more of the not foaming at the mouth people to start connecting dots; how lobbyist money and the corporate news structure is controlling perception and votes. It's going to take an enormous amount of public will and civil action to change much of anything concrete,

It's sad in general and it's sad that so many people still are more worried about Jon and Kate than issues like our severely bloated military, which seriously impacts their daily lives.

One thing for sure - kudos to Eisenhower who saw this coming. He most famously emphasized the danger of the military industrial complex in his presidential farewell address, but Thom Hartmann has played clips of him addressing this issue in 1953 or so, saying that for every bomber built we could build so many schools.

Dear Friends: Since My first visit to the Internet some years ago I recall telling family & Friends "Hey it's only a matter of time now" before the Cat is Out of the Bag and everyone is Forced out of there Mental Coma and becomes aware of all that has "REALLY & HONESTLY" taken place since they Rubbed out the Kennedy Family, all anyone needs to do is go back and listen to just a few of the Speeches JFK made prior to his Brutal Assassination and then follow the Wealth Trail and the direction it took off in to know who did what when that was Threatened. Now you can remain Numb between the ears and STAY asleep and just continue your life as per the Norm like 90% of this country has just take a step back and look at most of our Larger City's and the condition they are in and It Fall's on you like a Ton of bricks Instead of putting all our local People back to work Rebuilding our falling apart City's and the Infrastructures under them they do what is called "Patch and Pray" then move on to the next pot hole never doing what really needs to be done Because that would take to much Cash away from the 125 Bilderberger Familys that have been Stealing it since WW2
! Can you imagine what kind of people you have to be to be able to Murder an entire family just because they are trying to Help Americans live a Better life while at the same time Fixing america ? Can you imagine the kind of people that have huge family Xmas Party's and pretend to Love and care for the Family unit while at the exact same time pick up the phone and tell some one on the other end to go ahead and just "DO IT" ? and the next thing we Hear JFK jr and His pregnant Wife & Sister are Murdered ? My God people is this AMERICA ?

All any of us need do is just go back to when this actually "HONESTLY BEGAN" It all started with the Killing of our JFK Granted He had an over active Labito BUT Was still a great president and visionary and was in the process of returning our Boy's from a potential War that Not even the French could win in Southeast Asia and vowed NOT to make the exact same Mistake they made, But the young Military Complex that made Billions off the Wars prior to the Vietnam war wanted it to continue without intermission and they decided no Kid of Joe Kennedy was going to tell them they couldn't make there Billions ! So they put into motion the Assassination of Our President and what was the Very first Order of the Day for LBJ well lets just say it wasn't what JFK would have done ! and the rest is History all anyone with even Half of there Gray Matter working need do is just Look at where all the CASH went and the Direction Our counrty took off in and you will awaken from your Mental Slumber and say HOLY SHNIT !
