The killing of Dr. George Tiller is, of course, the second recent politically-motivated church shooting. The first occurred in the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church on July 27th of last year. And although one was targeted at a doctor, and the other at liberals in general, both share a common element: Bill O'Reilly. O'Reilly had targeted Tiller repeatedly on his show, claiming he ran a "death mill" and quoting a description of him as "Tiller the Baby Killer." And as for the Unitarian killing, the shooter infamously had a copy of O'Reilly's book in his home, and wrote a vitriolic screed about his hatred for liberals.

Of course, the factors motivating each killing cannot be boiled down simply to the influence of Mr. O'Reilly. However, Mr. O'Reilly bears a unique responsibility for this kind of violence, not only because his show and opinions reach millions of viewers, but also because he is a figure who not only disagrees with but dehumanizes his opponents. Using words like "evil" and "villain" to describe his targets, O'Reilly turns political spats into sweeping moral crusades.

A large part of The O'Reilly Factor's success can be attributed to this righteous anger and the creation of villains for the audience to despise. Bill O'Reilly has a spectacular ability to create caricatures out of cherry-picked details and heavily edited interviews, and to portray himself as a noble warrior against the forces of injustice. Whether it's a small-town mayor or a circuit judge, whoever O'Reilly feels has committed a sin is professionally and personally demonized. Of course, anyone who has ever spent a minute watching the show knows this, and it can usually be written off as a sensationalistic ratings-grabbing act. But when events like today's happen, it is important to examine the damage that this relentless pursuit of viewers can create.

As someone who worked at Planned Parenthood for a large part of the last year, I have driven past screaming protesters on my way into work numerous times. And the main problem with these activists has not been their mere presence, or the fact that they disagree with me, but their clear view of me as less than human. These groups often see doctors who perform abortions not only as wrong, but as seething, forceps-wielding, murderous Harold Shipmans or Josef Menegles. Barack Obama was prescient at Notre Dame when he claimed that the greatest obstacle to progress on abortion was the tendency to ignore the humanity of opponents.

And so, when crimes like the shooting of Dr. Tiller occur, Mr. O'Reilly bears a strong responsibility. He has used his great influence to create a climate of hatred in the parts of the American right, a hatred which is naturally likely to bubble over into extreme violence now and then. The Tiller and Tennessee shootings are the logical consequences of buying into O'Reilly's dehumanizing rhetoric. If those that disagree with us politically become monsters and murderers, shooting them can seem an act of great heroism. And it is O'Reilly, more than any other conservative host, who crafts the images of liberals and "abortionists" as monsters.

I am not suggesting that Bill O'Reilly should be brought up on charges. In my home country of Great Britain, leaders of the far right are occasionally arrested and convicted of attempting to incite violence, a measure which is deplorable and despotic. Freedom for the speech we hate is essential. But I am astounded that Mr. O'Reilly can sleep at night knowing the terror and hostility his words create. Until he softens his tone, and convinces his followers to demonstrate respect for those they disagree with, murders like George Tiller's are likely to continue.

Villiage Voice: "Those Who Trespass, his 1998 novel about an O’Reilly-esque TV journalist who is trained by an Irish Republican Army terrorist to kill the people who deserve it the most: the broadcast news bastards who interfered with the O’Reilly character’s career. It’s personal on the political level, too — his victims includes a powerful “bitch” named Hillary and a fat “slob” named Martin Moore."

What's your point and why aren't you writing about your countries War crimes and atrocities.

America and the worlds problems are not ALL CAUSED BY BILL O'RIELLY AND FOX NEWS.

You know Keith Olbermann is only a journalist who ignores the inconvenient facts surounding his own story.

Has O'Reilly ever been involved in an intelligent debate on the issues of abortion? What is murder? What is the Old Testament view on murder? The old Jewish idea was that life starts at birth. What about the idea that the soul enters the body at conception? That idea is less than 200 years old--being proclaimed by a pope. O'Reilly, being a Catholic, obviously believes this rather recent theological belief.
Using the information in the abortion section of Book 4 of the free ebook series "And Gulliver Returns" (at http://andgulliverreturns.info) would be a good starting point for an intelligent discussion. Can O'Reilly stop yelling and think and talk intelligently?

If Bill O'Reilly has 'Christian' admirers, chicken brained followers, red-neck supporters and Zionist financial backers in America, then why are Americans 'surprised', angry, pugnacious and bellicose against Osama Ben Laden's 'Islamic' admirers, single track minded followers and 'wahhabi' supporters and 'salafi' financial backers in the Middle East. Both O'Reilly and Ben Laden are two sides of the same coin. Both are destroying 'their own' before destroying their 'opposites'.

To compare abortion doctors to Josef Mengele is absurd. Mengele did cruel medical experiments on the living; abortion doctors terminate pregnancies to protect the living. A fetus is not a person. There is no comparison. Check it out:http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/L-personhood.htm
O'Reilly is Catholic. Catholics are dogmatically anti-abortion. But, unlike most Catholics, O'Reilly has a psychotic messianic complex. He should not be on the air, and Fox Noise advertisers should be boycotted.

OReilly was crusading for the life of babies killed by Tiller. I'm not sure why I do not see the outrage of muslims continued attacks on Americans.

Can it be liberals are anti American and anti children?

"Tiller The Baby Killer"

That's a phrase they kept repeating over and over. Their audience is armed, crazy and dumber than dog shit - a very unhealthy combo any way you dice it or slice it.

It there is ever another Tim McVeigh-style terrorist attack against our government - or if the old-fashioned tradition of assassinating Liberal politicians ever comes back into vogue - O'Rielly, Limbaugh, Hannity and a whole hell of a lot of others, will have blood on their hands.

Incitement to violence is illegal

"Incitement to violence applies to actual encouragement of violence against specific innocent parties by a speaker or writer. It does not apply to a statement or image that prompts irrational reactions by others who hear or see it."

O'Reilly broke the law. I'm encouraging people to support legal action against him. Look for a group like the Southern Poverty Law Center to get things going.

It's NOT just Bill O' who's spewing demonizing hatred toward any individual or group (that doesn't share his vision of morality); these IMMORAL, so-called moral crusades (aka. "religious right-wing" radical behaviors/acts) are being spawned by people like Hannity, the facade called Fox news; Rush Limbaugh, and several other hate mongers.

I know -- the first reaction by some of these right-wingers is to throw Olbermann and Maher under their "morality" train; but the truth of the matter is that Olbermann and Maher usually get their facts straight -- which is a LOT more than I can say for faux reporters and regular commentators, who because they assume that they are christians, believe that it's their way or the highway.

Here's an analogy of what these so-called noise TV evangelists (Bill O', Hannity, and Limbaugh) are actually doing -- Picture this: "You're in a crowded airport. There are so many people in that airport that you have standing-room only. Suddenly, a man that appears to be foreign, wearing a long trench coat, yells out loud that he's going to blow the place up." What do you think law enforcement and transportation security would do with that individual? Now, to sweeten the deal, the guy gets arrested for his outlandish destruction cry; but after arresting him, they find that the man is a disgruntled American employee, who had no physical weapons, but the will to scare the holy mess out of people? Guess what? The guy is still going to serve time. Period.

When Bill O' and others like him have the WILL and a PUBLIC FORUM like Faux news to distribute fear and hatred (like the man in my little story above), that makes them EVEN WORSE. They are facilitating a public venue to create mobesque fear and hatred against others.

Abortion may not always be the right choice, but I will defend that choice as long as I live. As a woman and MOTHER of one son and one daughter, I will defend my daughter's right to choose what she does with her body. I may not always agree with why people choose to have an abortion, but it's NOT my right to judge another human being. Which brings me to the next part of my commentary: "christians...rather, make-believe Christians, have already carried out some of the greatest sins (from the 10 commandments):

"You shall not make for yourself an idol."

"You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God."

"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

"You shall not covet your neighbor's wife; You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Of course there's also the passage from Matthew stating, "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged..."

I guess I'm "picking and choosing" passages from the bible to reinforce what I'm saying here; and I'm sure some bible-thumper will come along and find five more passages to contradict what I've written herein; BUT, that's my point exactly: Too many radical religious zealots are "picking and choosing" bible passages to reinforce their insane beliefs -- as does Bill O'

*Remember folks, "WILL" creates incentive; incentive creates action. I'm not for censorship, but when people are inspired to murder because of zealous moral crusaders, then it's time to shut down the network that creates that environment. Sorry. Just my two cents... Peace

The world goes 'round and round......'

Rev. Al Sharpton had led a mass protest against a discriminatory, foreign-owned department store in Harlem that had gone awry. One of the protestors ran into the store, sprayed gasoline and lit the place on fire. The store employees tried to escape using the back exit but couldn't because it was illegally chained and blocked. A few folks were killed as a result.

The Reichwingers, in support of then Rudy Ghouliani's supposed Senate run, hurled blame at Al Sharpton. Nevermind that no criminal indictments were levied against the storeowners for illegally chaining up a fire exit. Nevermind that the perpetrator has a serious mental history and al sharpton cannot be mindful of all the participants of his protests.

But the big difference with that incident and Bill O'reilly is that unlike Bill, Al wasn't inciting hate and killing. and he certainly didn't have the bully pulpit of a television show to deliver his message of hate to a wide, easily-susceptible audience.

Using the irrational Reichwing standard they had used against Al Sharpton, Bill O'Reilly should be guilty as hell.

This Morning on Townhall.com

Townhall has an article this morning Monday June 4 defending Bill O'Reilly and an even more inflammatory one by Ann Coulter on the same subject, Dr Tiller's murder and TV sequellae. For any who do not know, townhall.com (developed by The Heritage Foundation) is a conservative website that every day publishes 10-30 articles by various columnists. Then, here's the fun part: every article is followed by a Comments thread where you will meet people you probably do not know socially. And you get to comment as well. But do beware of townhall's very pro-morals filter, which takes out bad words. For example, last week when I defended Judge Sotomayor's background and tried to write the phrase "Summa cum Laude", townhall's filter took out the word cum.

Good grief! Read the commentaries here and on other liberal websites, then tell me the skirts of the left are clean where rabble-rousing is concerned. Compare to more obvious ad hominem attack that is vituperation and scurrility, this journalistic garbage is the merely the extended version.

The author, and those who agree with him, merely demonstrates that HE is the liberal version of the equally odious O'Reilly.

Extremism seems always to need - desperately, neurotically, and even psychotically - someone to hate.

There is the Freedom of Speech, but it has exclusions too.
Of Course the most famous- Yelling 'Fire' in a theatre. And why is this illegal- because it has the potential to create choas which can cause injury. Other point being, that if done repeatedly the effect will be muted thus creating the potential for non action when such event occurs...'Crying Wolf'
The past election should have been a Clear indication to the Right Wing,Americans are oversatiated with their Cries of "Wolf" and the overwhelming use of aggression to respond to disagreements or conflicts.
another point of Freedom of Speech- what you say to those in a bar is limited to only those within the bar- it is not broadcasted across National and international media- You carry no Authority nor Right to Represent anyone but yourself. Having the Right to make an Ass of yourself is an American Freedom. But when you are afforded a national Podium a higher degree of responsibility is required because it carries with it the appearance of Authority. Not only that you have been granted the privildge of such exposure, but that you also are acting as a representative of a large enough group to warrant the priviledge.
BillO Deserves to be prosecuted because he essentially Screams 'Fire' when there is none. He deserves prosecution because he has misused his priviledge of Authority. He Deserves to be prosecuted because he has failed to appropriately represent the America people to each other and the world. He is a propagandist- creating an enviroment of fear and distrust while claiming to be an Autority and a representative.

... because what you are talking about is hate speech in America. Hate that is media policy, because the media represents middle, white, America. Not anyone else, for that's considered liberal indulgence.

Hate speech in America is something even the President has done. G.W. Bush had no problem demonizing Islam. Vice President Cheney called the Middle East a world of 'Islamofascism'. A word not heard of until he said it. This is what has defined America, especially during the Bush Era.

America is a nation whos media is neck deep in blood and hate. American hate is rabid on US radio, Bill O'Reilly shouts out his hate, Lou Dobbs on CNN continues his hate campaign against Latino America, and on and on... this is the US media. This is policy, not an accident or something unusual.

Blame Billo for the hate and violence all you want, but it's far more than just him. It's you too, after all, people watch the US media and they feel good about themselves and their bourgeois existence.

His twisted burning wreck of a moral compass should not find purchase in the national dialogue on any subject.

He is a hot button whore, a gargantuan, perverted hypocrite that is wasting our precious time.

We would all be better off not even responding to him, because his rhetoric is a poison that will be spread on the wind of outrage, when it should just whither in his purulent gullet.

They must have constant attention to feel alive. Silence is their death sentence. Those who choose to respond to his inflammatory remarks become his latest victim. As someone who grew-up in the late 60's and 70's, the spectacle of O'Reilly and Fox News in general just makes me shake my head.

As one who can still remember Walter Cronkite, John Chancellor, and Howard K. Smith, I find it hard to believe that Fox and it's ilk like O'Reilly are on the air today with millions of listeners.

Who says there is such a thing as the inevitability of human progress?

Puny Chicken-Shit of a Man

Bill O'Reilly is just as bad as the murderous hate-jocks that fanned the flames during the Rwanda genocide. He is one of many here at home. And of course, these cowardly demagogues never accept responsibility for the carnage they cause.

In O'Reilly's case we know that he is a puny chicken-shit of a man who will pull any kind of dirty trick to stay in the limelight.

And certainly FOX and the TV sponsors share responsibility for the hate that is generated by these moral misfits. They are true enemies of the people and the best way to stop them is to keep up a steady stream of public criticism.

If it weren't shill o'liely bringing out the worst in stupid, ignorant drones, it'd be somebody else. Condemning someone who lives to stir up the mentally challenged, and makes a tidy sum doing it is about as effective as digging a hole in the ocean.

Extremist views and reality checks (abortion)

It is not an extremist view to look at abortion and assess it as murder. After all, there is no doubt that a killing takes place and if you do not kill it, it would more than likely be born a child in a few months. (What you are killing is up for interpretation.)

Personally I find it far more extremist to claim abortion is simply a matter of choice.

Bill O'Reilly and The Scum of the Earth

Of course, O'Reilly's braying, crusade against Dr. Tiller played a huge role in his murder! O'Reilly passed a death sentence on a real man; who had the courage to minister aid to humanity.

What Bill, Rush, Savage and their ilk cannot stand is the fact that after long suffering, women finally, have some rights; including the right to privacy!

This not news to anyone who has seen the filthy metamorphosis of friends and members of one's family. It is a horrible sight to behold.

Fox Faux News is swill incarnate!

What a bunch of wadded up panty poo butts O'reilly has every right to state his opinion as you or I do . If for some sad, can't think for them selves reason, someone goes out and kills because they listened to someone say something does that mean the speaker is to blame ? Well its kinda like saying yea I shot him but its not my fault if the gun wasn't there I couldn't have shot him, so whoever left the gun there is to blame . And that my friend is bullshit , its another attempt to limit peoples opinions expressed in public .

One who knows history knows that war-like speech leads to war. And hate speech leads to murder. Nazi Germany, Yugoslovia and the Balken War--which was ingnited by hate speech on talk radio. A corporate media entity that harbors hate speech is NOT the same as you or I in a barroom doing it. That is like comparing a fart to typhoon. Fox News has a monopoly license to uses the public airways and thus has a responsibility to the nation.

I find it interesting that the black soldier who shot up a recruiting station was charged as a terrorist but the guy who shot Dr. Tiller was not. So if you commit a terrorist act but you are white and so-called Christian, you are not a terrorist, but if you do the same thing and you are black and Muslim, you are a terrorist. I say call a spade a spade and charge Fox News and their incendiaries what they are--terrorists, even if they are rich, white.

I use to view all news programs at Night just to see what everyones view was. Now I make sure I miss the trash that Faux news puts out. O'reilly wants to make me puke just to see his face, much less listen to his incoherent tripe along with Hannity and the rest of out of touch fools that Fox employees. The one lie that I hear from them spouting, is their ratings. Obviously they only survey Right wing extremists and other nut jobs to come up with their phoney numbers.

Um, O'Reilly's clips contain statements where he directly calls for Tiller's death

I am not suggesting that Bill O'Reilly should be brought up on charges. In my home country of Great Britain, leaders of the far right are occasionally arrested and convicted of attempting to incite violence, a measure which is deplorable and despotic.

Why is this despotic? No, free speech ends when you directly call for someone's death.

Sorry, there's being stupid and being stoopid. When you cross the line from Stoopid to advocating elimination of another human being, and do it repeatedly in public on public airspace, it's a criminal act.

Let O'Reilly's Advertisers Know How Much of a Hatemonger He Is
Posted by: SkeeterVT1 on Jun 6, 2009 9:07 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There is a very effective way to put a stop to O'Reilly's hatemongering. And that is the same tactic that got Michael Savage and Don Imus booted from MSNBC.

Tell companies who advertise on O'Reilly's show how their ad dollars are enabling this hatemonger.

O'Reilly and Fox News are impervious to letter-writing campaigns by progressives. But they're NOT impervious to advertiser boycotts. When major companies start pulling their ads, you'll see a change in O'Reilly's attitude real quick.

O'Reilly the Agent Provocateur

Bill O knows exactly what he is doing, he is following the classic agent provocateur play book, find some poor mentally unstable sap and whisper encouragement into their ear until they go off and kill or destroy leaving the agent and their masters with clean hands. And with the help of Fox News the cowards who act from the shadows can accomplish this on nationwide scale. And no I'm not a conspiracy nut just someone who's been around long enough to have seen this before.
