A new crime has burst out onto America’s political blotter. Move over drug pushing and car stealing, meet the new menace. Job killing. But fear not. We now have in Congress a dedicated army of self-selected saviors who have loudly vowed to keep us protected.

And just how are these lawmakers going to keep our jobs secure? They’re going to put the kibosh on labor law reform.

Americans who believe all workers have the right to bargain collectively with their employers have been battling for labor law reform for some time now. The plentiful loopholes in our current labor law, they note, let companies make life intolerably miserable for workers who want to start a union. But reform had no chance so long as George W. Bush sat in the White House.

With Barack Obama’s election, real reform has once again become politically viable. And America’s anti-union business leaders know it. They’ve been spending furiously on anti-reform ads and lobbying. And now the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is threatening a “firestorm bordering on Armageddon” if Democrats in Congress try to get reform onto President Obama’s desk.

Business groups are claiming that passage of the Employee Free Choice Act — the prime pending labor law reform bill — would “harm the economy and cost millions of jobs.” In Congress, reform foes are echoing that pitch at every opportunity. Labor law reform, as South Dakota Senator John Thune enjoys asserting, would be “a job killer for our economy.”

This drumbeat won’t be letting up anytime soon. Corporate interests have even named their anti-reform front group the “Alliance To Save Main Street Jobs.”

But we need to give the masterminds of this campaign against labor law reform some credit. They actually do have a legitimate point to make. Job killers really are stalking America today. Here's the catch: The real-life “job killers” in our midst aren’t pushing the Employee Free Choice Act. They’re opposing it.

Over the last quarter-century, these real-life job killers — the power suits who run Wall Street and Corporate America — have essentially turned job killing into standard business operating procedure. In effect, they’ve been on a job-killing spree. Their motive: keep CEO pockets stuffed. Their M.O.: merge and purge.

Here’s how the deadly corporate job-killing game has worked: Instead of devoting their time to nurturing enterprises that make good products and offer quality services, impatient CEOs spend their every waking hour cutting deals to buy out other companies. After each deal, they gobble up the customers of these other companies — and then fire huge numbers of their workers.

No one anywhere will talk about the H1b, or L1 Visa.

These two visas are issued for one reason only: to depress the wages of Americans by importing cheap third world labor. These visas were thought up by major corporations to reduce the cost of payrolls by sending the money offshore.

Real job stealing occurs within the bounds of the law, and unions haven't done a damn thing about it.

You're absolutely correct. Unions are the answer. Just ask the laid-off workers at Ford and GM and Chrysler, three of the most heavily unionized businesses in the US. Wait...

Don't get me wrong, workers should have the right to negotiate with their employers.

But continually demanding more and more for doing less and less is NOT negotiation.

What if employees graded their employers on fair treatment policies and the government granted contracts based on the those grades. And, what if the government required companies receiving contracts to keep their staff levels as a condition for winning the bids. Would that be proper incentive? Or does it take a stick to get their attention?

... the stockholders/share holders. Remember, the CEO is "only" in doing what HIS bosses want and they, ultimately, are the stockholders, the share holders of the company. They demand the CEO delivers to them quick and high returns for their investments in the company, or they'll take their money elsewhere. That requires their CEO to do things that will maximise the profits in the short to medium term to achieve the returns on investment the stockholders demand. The CEOs buys into doing their bidding because the rewards the stockholders will pay them are very high. Sure, they earn millions but it's chicken feed compared to the major investors will get. THAT is when the poor grunts on the shop floor, who USED to be called "personnel" become what they are now called, "human resources"! It is no coincidence that, when short-termism became the investor's mantra, the Personnel Department became the Human Resources one - people are much harder to sack than resources are to get rid of.

Work together and keep a check on the employer and never let him or her abuse their power. The business leaders will no doubt invent another "Harry and Louise" propaganda to water down or even kill EFCA. If our pols in Washington had really understood the real meaning of poverty and stopped providing temporary quickie fixes for the already disappearing middle class but had instead worked on long term solutions for both the lower and middle class, then perhaps EFCA would be given a higher priority over Dubya style "stimulus" packages. Already there's talk of another "stimulus" package in the works. Even non-union workers would actually stand to benefit from EFCA because they'd finally see the real beauty of being a union member and I'm not talking about money or benefits alone. The corporatists will do anything to defend bad employers abusing their employees. Hasn't this country had enough of exploiting near slave labor via outsourcing and hiring illegalized-due-to-dumping immigrants? I know that there have been known cases of not so good unions but money corrupted those leaders and must be fixed. However, the anti-union crowd who misuses those instances to demonize all labor unions are without realization supporting Hitler and Mussolini who engage in rampant union busting similar to Raygun's version in their times. It's time to let EFCA tear down the corporate fascist wall.

B of A is laying off 37,000 Americans, while they are adding 15,000 jobs in India. Bank of Where? I guess you'll have to negotiate your next refinancing over the phone.

The company has a net asset value way below zero anyways.

World leaders must Unite against the Multinationals

A concerted effort must be made to rein in the multinationals once and for all. They move into regions, use & abuse their citizens, only to pick up and move to the next cheapest labor market. It's not only a matter of cheaper labor, but lax safty and environmental laws. Thus screwing the workers via shit wages & conditions and destroying their envirnoments. The World leaders must allow them no place to hide. If these Corp swant to play on the World Stage- they have to earn the Right. Providing adequate wages, bennies, working conditions and evironmental considerations. These corps have lured in populations, made them dependent on them, then abandon them. The problems in Mexico are the same ones our Inner cities experienced in the '80's & '90's- the only way to make a living became Drug dealing. Our consumption of drugs has not had a marked increase- nor even our weapons manufacturing- What has changed is the corps have picked up and left Mexico for Asia.
Hillary proved once again what a Corp Whore she really is. Easy to blame the woes of Mexico on American drug use, or guns sales- thus avoiding the real culprits to economic devastation the Corps who her Hubby let move to Mexico. Now they've left and crippled the economy, same shit they did to US!
These Multinationals are the Pandemic afflicting Humanity. They move into a region, change the economic structures, create a situation where the population is reliant upon them, and then leave for 'greener pastures'- leaving a wake of devastation behind. Ya need a Prototype of how these Corps operate- Look to Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, Pittsburg,Gary...If those who are now flying high on their Industrial prosperity now think they are immune, they are delusional. This is not isolated to the automotive industry- but every other form of mass production. Where are our textile corps now- Asia & S. America. Our customer service telecoms- India.Hell they were even thinking of making the fast food drive up window order taker position over seas to save a buck!
If they leaders of the G20 are going to resolve the Global economic catastrophe- they must address ALL industries who effect the Global community- All Forms of Multinationals- Finance, manufacturing, energy, Agriculture, Shipping, Service... If you want to play on the World Stage you have to be able to operate on a model which is Advantageous to the Global community, Not a detriment.

There are abundant resources on this planet for EVERYONE to have clean water, food, shelter, decent jobs, medical care, etc.!!!

Corporations have merged with government, which was basically Mussolini's definition of fascism:

"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." --Benito Mussolini.

What I'd really love to see and hear

Hi, I'm Joe the business owner. I don't really care if my employees live or die, let alone if they're happy, safe, or in good health, just as long as I get the maximum productivity from them at a minimal cost. My colleagues and I have our senator right where we want him, and he'll vote any way we tell him to, for a price, of course. That's OK, because slipping him a buck or two is a lot cheaper than paying union scale wages or (horrors!), benefits. What's that you say? I'm a scumbag? Well, yeah, but at least I'm an HONEST scumbag. I'm honest because I know nobody'll do a goddam thing about my abusive practices, and the Fair choice Act doesn't have a chance, so SCREW YOU! That's what's REALLY happening on the labor front, and what our elected officials don't want us to see or hear.

You have obviously NEVER run a business!

You do not comprehend how difficult the actual running of a business can be. It is SO simple to just simply say "Let's all form a union".

Unions destroy businesses, pure and simple.

They drive up labor costs, extort wages and benefits from an emasculated management, and pervert the actions of the enterprise.

Business exist to provide customer satisfaction and to make a profit doing just that.

Try running a business and you will soon understand exactly what that means.

Organized Labor is Organized Crime!
