As we mark the first 100 days of his presidency, it is staggering to consider the enormous challenges President Obama inherited from his predecessor, arguably the worst President ever. Can the devastation wrought by an eight-year nightmare be sorted out in 100 Days? Of course it can't. That's why Obama himself talked about needing to measure his accomplishments not by the first 100 days, but by the first 1,000.

Yet as we near this iconic marker -- whether one is disappointed by some key appointments (read on), the size of the recovery bill, escalation in Afghanistan, the bank bailout plan or other issues -- this President must be given credit for hitting the ground running and confronting challenges head on. Brutal and fundamental fights still lie ahead -- on energy, healthcare, the budget, to name a few.

Obama understood the power -- both symbolic and real -- of swift, smart action, even within the first 100 hours of his inauguration. He pledged to close Guantánamo and the CIA black sites. He quickly passed a strong recovery bill -- even if it was smaller than it should have been; that bill and his proposed budget begin to lay out a new blueprint for economic recovery and reconstruction, and a break with ill-conceived dogma about deficit reduction that has defined and limited economic policy for thirty years. He repealed the global gag order, took steps to restore science to its proper place with regard to stem cell research and addressing climate change, and has embarked on a substantive transformation to a clean energy economy.

On diplomacy, Obama has shown a willingness to engage with countries that may have interests and ideas that diverge from those of the United States. He's expressed support for a more central US role in global alliances, including a firm endorsement of the UN, and on recent trips to Europe and Latin America he's set a new tone of respect and listening. He's declared his commitment to nuclear abolition and, in doing so, has opened the door to a renewed and wiser nuclear non-proliferation framework. He has begun to reset the relationship with Russia, reexamining the folly of missile defense, putting NATO expansion on the back burner, and cooperating on regional diplomacy to stabilize Afghanistan. After years of failed policy toward Cuba, the Administration has created new possibilities for cooperation by lifting restrictions on Cuban Americans' visits to relatives and the amount of money they can send to them. Diplomatic overtures to Iran have also opened new windows of possibility. Obama has committed to withdrawing from Iraq on a faster timetable -- and we need to push him to adhere to his commitment to security through withdrawal. It's disappointing to see his support for increasing the defense budget with a new focus on counterinsurgency and low intensity conflict. But, in all, we see in Obama a sense of responsibility and a desire to reengage the world on new terms, following eight years of arrogance and swagger. We see the rough outline of an Obama Doctrine -- progressive realism -- a belief, as the President stated, that "we do our best to promote our ideals and our values by our example." What will be the real test, however, is the one Obama recently described at the Summit of the Americas, "… The test for all of us is not simply words, but also deeds."

But there are two areas which I fear could endanger the Obama Presidency: military escalation in Afghanistan and the bank bailout. With the cratering economy, and most projections indicating double-digit unemployment through 2011, there is a sense that he has given with one hand through his recovery plan and budget proposal, but tied the other with a bank bailout that could undermine much of the good in his economic plan. The contrast between the treatment of the auto industry, where workers and managers and creditors and shareholders are taking the hits, and the bailout of banks is corrosive. The selection of the Summers/Geithner team was a huge missed opportunity and misstep. When more bonuses are paid out, and more self-dealing exposed, we may see more anger -- especially right wing populism. On Afghanistan, I am concerned that it will bleed us of the resources needed for economic recovery, further destabilize Pakistan, open a rift with our European allies, and negate the positive effects of withdrawing from Iraq on our image in the Muslim world.

10 Reasons Obama Will Be a 1-Term President
Posted by: DrBrian on Apr 23, 2009 12:30 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Obama will end up nearly as unpopular as GW Bush and will be a one-term president. I submit 10 reasons:

1. The massive giveaway of our children's and grandchildren's generations' money to Wall Street firms that engaged in fraud and reckless ventures.
2. The attempt to obstruct justice for government officials involved in felony murder, forced disappearance, torture and other war crimes.
3. The pseudo-withdrawal from Iraq with a continued immense military presence.
4. Continuation of a massively bloated Pentagon budget and archipelago of hundreds of overseas bases.
5. Escalation of the Afghan war.
6. Destabilization of Pakistan, which will probably result in collapse and rule by extremists.
7. Farcical cap and trade greenhouse gas policy.
8. Refusal to re-regulate Wall Street.
9. Refusal to advocate single-payer healthcare.
10.Continued illegal spying on American citizens and invocation of the state secrets doctrine.

Mr. Obama could have done this all in the first 100 hours and certainly should have done it in the first 100 days.

We need to demand that all our rights be restored immediately and the rule of law be enforced, especially for capital crimes committed by government officials at the highest levels.

If we don't, we will continue our downward slide into being a 300 million person banana republic.

Take a stand against the corruption that is destroying our country, brothers and sisters, or soon we will not have a country and our children will curse us for our cowardice.

Talk to your neighbors, organize your community, plant vegetable gardens and fruit trees.

The truth shall set us free. Love is the only way forward.

The Bailout Is a Fraud That Could Bring Down Obama

""This whole bank scandal makes Teapot Dome look like some kind of kids' doll set," Black told the investors' journal Barron's in an interview published in the print edition on April 13.

The Privately Owned and Operated Federal Reserve

"Bernanke has provided generous “100 cents on the dollar” loans for Triple A mortgage-backed collateral that is now worth 30 cents on the dollar. The Fed stands to lose trillions of dollars on these loans because the assets will never regain their original value. Eventually the taxpayer will have to pony up the difference in higher taxes, fewer public services and a weaker dollar."

The Geithner-Summers Plan: Even Worse Than We Thought

"In fact, the situation is even potentially more disastrous than we wrote. Insiders can easily game the system created by Geithner and Summers to cost up to a trillion dollars or more to the taxpayers."

...

The looting of our treasury overshadows everything else. If they are successful the banks walk away with trillions leaving us short of money for Social Security, Medicare and just about every other social program .... to pay for their greed, incompetence and fraud !

Obama's destiny is directly tied to this scandal, unless he cleans it up pronto it will destroy his presidency and leave our country in financial ruin!

Is Obama campaign cash quashing eligibility suits?

Why now, would there be a need for this bill?

H.R. 1503 -
To amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to require the principal campaign committee of a candidate for election to the office of President to include with the committee's statement of organization a copy of the candidate's birth certificate, together with such other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution.

Is Obama campaign cash quashing eligibility suits? FEC shows more than $1 million paid to top law firm since election.

Give the Pres. an "F"

As in FANTASTIC. He has been active and engaged in bringing the Ship of State about since the day he was elected. He is refreshing and bold in his acts of thoughtful response to the perils we face. It is unfortunate that he has to spend his attentions on righting the indiscretions of the previous administration which have distracted him from bolder acts on the platform that he ran on . . . but then who knew, besides the previous bunch, that the nation was in a crash dive to the bottom?

Just like the cocktail elites on the far right, her job is pretending to stand up for pretty principles, while supporting Democrats who will betray those same principles at the drop of a hat. This kind of job requires skill at managing one's own cognitive dissonance. Katrina is probably a real expert at this.

It no doubt makes it easier, that she enjoys being a minor celebrity, & getting invited to all those nice Manhattan dinner parties. She has a nice life. She likes stylish clothes (especially those leather jackets!), & gets to see her name in print all the time. Stuff like that makes it easy to manage one's own cognitive dissonance.

Obama scorecard
Posted by: chlamor on Apr 23, 2009 6:27 AM

Iraq: D-. It would have been an F but he didn't start it. He did vote funding and is complicit and he's haggling over "how many" and "how long." Very poor performance.

Afghanistan: F. Read history Obama. He reads Doris Kearns who thinks Lincoln's first cabinet, a disaster, was some sort of idealized model. Maybe he's not that smart. Who the hell reads Doris Kearns?

Torture: C-. I'm stretching here but he did release those memos. He bent to the will of public shame and just did it. He know about the torture and voted for it but lets give him one C at least.

War Crimes: Bush-Cheney prosecutions: F - Preemptive bailout on responsibility, foot dragging, giving the impression that he's a Zombie by showing no real moral outrage.

NAFTA: F. We still have it don't we?

Bank Bailouts: F- Little Timmy and his pal Larry Summers are there. They've expanded on Paulson's looting. This will be his undoing.

Health Care: F - His campaign proposed a web site that would drive down prices by promoting competition. Well, lets see, more than 1/2 of health insurance is purchased by corporations. They hire health insurance companies to administer the plans. It's a joke, truly. These corporations of any size are self insured. The insurance companies don't pay. What a deception.

Warrantless Wiretapping: A - Give the guy a break. He digs this stuff and had his A.G. defend it in court. A for honesty and provoking the citizens.

"Dear Leader" my ass

Liberals have their heads so far up the D-party's rear end that they think it smells soooo sweet! It's like going to the store and buying a product with really nice packaging that is spoiled rotten inside. They open the package, eat the rancid, spoiled contents, and go "um um, what a great package!"

Obama's brilliance is in disarming the left on virtually every issue: the bank bailout, escalation in Afghanistan, continuing support for the occupations of Palestine and Iraq, the war on "terror," FISA, etc., etc., etc., abandonment of the poor, Card Check, etc.. Liberals are preoccupied with Obama, how "smart he is," what great (largely symbolic) things he's done while he's continuing and even extending Bush/neoliberal/neocon policies on all of the above.

We need an independent left party/movement in this country to stand up for us on all of these issues. Read CounterPunch.org, and support independent parties and movements!

Some basic reality of Obama’s first 80 days
Posted by: chlamor on Apr 23, 2009 9:01 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
* Obama has escalated the illegal war in Afghanistan with an additional 21,000 troops.

* Obama has expanded the war into Pakistan areas, using troops and unmanned drones.

* Obama has extended the deadline for withdrawing troops from Iraq to 2010—and even that date may be extended by the Pentagon.

* Obama said he plans to leave 35,000-50,000 troops plus 50,000-100,000 mercenaries in Iraq after that, effectively continuing the illegal occupation.

* Obama said he would close Guantanamo within 1 year, yet prisoners there are still being force fed with tubes shoved down their throats.

* Obama approved $60 million to double the size of Bagram prison in Afghanistan.

* Obama’s Justice Department has defended the Bush policy of illegal warrantless wiretapping and asserted far broader claims of executive branch immunity than even the Bush regime.

This is not all, and it is not without lived impact. There are over a million dead in Iraq, 4 million refugees, civilians being slaughtered daily in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Yet, from within the United States mass protest, mass resistance, mass statements of condemnation are at an appallingly low level. An anti-war movement has not only been demobilized, but delivered into the war criminal enterprise of working to make Obama live up to his promise—a promise that Obama has always been clear about, that is nothing less than rescuing the U.S. from its multi-faceted crises.

This apology for Obama is the exact reason I quit subscribing to the Nation some time back, after subbing for over 10 years.

Plain and simple: Obama has lied or gone back on his word about every promise he made, except escalating the war in Afghanistan.

Change: Clinton pt2

Union card check: MIA/not a word

FISA: lied and or "changed his mind"

rule of law: we don't have it, if the Bush criminals aren't put on trial

Economy "stimulus" plan might in 4 years replace the jobs lost in the last 4 months; meanwhile the top bank criminals and the companies they run get 12 billion and counting.

single payer health plan shut out of the debate

medical marijuana still under the jackboot

What are the chances he appoints a Supreme Court Justice as liberal as Roberts is a reactionary conservative? Nil I'd say.

What owning-class logic fails to see
Posted by: DaBear on Apr 23, 2009 10:24 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
For better or worse, this President has shown himself as open to influence -- he's malleable -- and progressives need to keep that in mind as we fight for an agenda that is just, sustainable and real.

Truly written by someone who never has to live with the impact, burdens and consequences of owning-class decisions being made in the Obama Administration.

Please, Katrina, show us the evidence that he's "malleable"... so far he's only been malleable to the influence of the Right. When you live as a lower class person you learn pretty fast, that when the powerful are only influenced against your interests, they do NOT deserve your optimism, hopes or trust.

I've observed the owning class at work over forty years and one thing they do as a matter of routine is, point out the risks to the lowers, then go behave as if those risks never existed and act AGAINST the lowers.

Sorry, Katrina, you're too damned rich to comprehend the damage the first 100 days of Bush lite we've suffered. Another 900 just isn't good enough.

Still better than I had hoped

I didn't support Obama in the primaries, "hope" and "change" just didn't do it for me, given the realities of our world today, but I was impressed by his speech on race, and since September I have been more and more impressed by his grasp of what being a president is. No, for all you naysayers, I am not happy with his defense/Afghanistan/Iraq decisions, but they are a modest improvement over what we could have expected with McCain. And I'm really happy with most of his environmental decisions, not to mention some of his foreign policy. It's important to remember that as the Rolling Stones said, "you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you get what you need", or something like that. Our system of government requires compromise, and you should remember that. Obama has performed much better than I expected and I am happy! Perhaps all the people with negative comments should not have had such high expectations, although I would be surprised to find that they had any expectations. I sure didn't.

While it is possible that he will be a 1 term president like Jimmy Carter, it is also possible that if in his first 657 days he does not make major improvements, he may lose congress to the Republicans like Bill Clinton but manage to get reelected to a 2nd term. If he loses congress, that could derail his agenda, just as losing in 2012 would.

It's probably too early to make judgements about Obama's performance to date. I'm pleased on one hand, but uneasy, and even apprehensive on the other. He did more good for our country in the first eight days of his presidency than that miserable cretin, bush did in the entire eight years of his illegal regime. Obama's refusal to discuss prosecution of the bushie thugs in any substantive way may, or may not be because it's Eric Holder"s call and not his. His astonishing naiveity regadring Afghanistan is most disconcerting. Is it possible he actually believes the lies surrounding the hideous crime of 911, and those REALLY responsible for it? What's the deal with Iraq; are we getting the hell out of there, or not? Why should we be there at all, now that proof positive of the lies that got us there is common knowlege? Some things are humming along with impressive speed, while the administration is dragging its feet on some vitally important issues. Is it any wonder I'm ambivalent?

His economic plan is Shrubs plan with a pretty boy touch and words...only he speaks better but still says and has done nothing of substance as noted by many above.

I hope those of your who swallowed the Obama Kool-Aide platitudes are now realizing that this man is a corporate whore, bought and paid for by corporate pimps.

He has done little to be proud of on the progressive front and worse yet, he does not know what he stands for...say what you want about the Shrub and company...at least you knew what they stood for and what they were going to do to this country...basically destroy anything good that was left of it (no pun intended).

Obama, on the other hand often acts like a wimp and tries to play nice, instead of hiring the BEST people available to solve our problems, and as a result, he is letting the neoconazis eat his lunch, while he is losing his base.

Until people realize that this is a war for the heart and soul for this country and should be fought as such, the neoconazis will win, hands down. THEY do know how to fight.

Most of you writing here blasting Obama are idiotic. He's a million times better than Bush and about 500,000 times better than McCain. Sure, there are things we can disagree with him on, and maybe we'd love a more pure liberal, but Obama is a reasonable, moderate liberal and his changes will be moderate in nature. That's just reality. We can push him and prod him and we should. But to just blast him like most of you have here, that's just stupid.

Seriously, people.. Did you really buy into the 'Obama is Jesus, The Amazing Kreskin and the Wizard of Oz! hype?' He's not the Savior, he's the president, and, last time I heard, still a human being, not a diety.

Give him a fucking break! He's been President for barely THREE MONTHS! do you really think you should be bashing the guy when he has barely even started his term?

'He hasn't fixed the economy *wah*! Why is there still Climate change*sniff*! How come we aren't out of the two giant clusterfucks in the middle east yet*sniffle*.

For. Christ's. Sake. He ISN'T GOD! Get off his back and let the man untangle the giant shit sandwich he was given.

We have enough Asshats on the Right without joining them from the Left. Shut up and let the man do his job for, oh, I don't know, 6 months before you start tearing him down.

Jesus, people.

Unless Obama quickly begins to follow The Laws of the USA, he is as guilty as Bush, Cheney, et al. and should be impeached. Forgive him for taking on horrendous problems, but thus far he is failing to follow the law of the land. Better than McShame and Moose-gutter? Of course, but he continues to fail at his job.

Here, we will soon dispatch our useless Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, but America will still be suffering from Obama's failed policies.

I'm sure he'll prosecute the Obama people vigorously.

The Good:
1.)Repealed the global gag rule
2.)Closed down Guantanamo Bay(anything that p.o's Dick Cheney is a plus)
3.)Has reduced military presence in Iraq
4.)Has lifted the ban against stem cell research
5.) Has passed a stimulus bill to help Americans, albeit it is too compromised.
6.)Has shown he is open to negotiation and trilateralism with foreign nations.
The Bad:
1.)Has not completely removed the military presence in Iraq,(wtf is a "residual force",last time I checked, the military was meant to kill people, not serve in "non-military capacities")
2.) Has actually increased military presence in Afghanistan, as well as increased the use of killer robots called "drones" in Pakistan.
3.) May actually attack Pakistan for containing Osama, and start a much bigger regional conflict. Obama is more hawk than dove.
4.)The stimulus bill is far too compromised. It originally began at an estimated 900 billion $,but has been decreased to a estimated 787 billion. The bill was already to compromised to begin with, this bill is weak.
5.)Has given 2-3 trillion $ to the financial industry, even though they are responsible for this mess. Obama should just temporally nationalize the banks.
6.)Has wavered on serious talks about the War on Drugs, a corrupt and illogical policy that claims the blood, sweat, and money of millions.
Over all, very mixed. Its better than most US presidents, but thats not saying much. I just hope that his performance over this first 100 days is not an indicator of what is too come, I really hope us Progressives can get him to move farther to the left as his presidency continues. Otherwise, Obama will go down in history as the Black Herbert Hoover.

Name one thing he solved? The fawning white liberal guilt press is still doing the cover his butt dance...triple the national debt...wow.
The people are going to riot if these 401s are still down so much by summer...and I think they will be...
unless the worst case is already dealt with...blaming Bush will get stale after 6 months.
Carter is back with a nice tan to go with his smile...the secular socialists are all talk but when they have the total power...they fail and we suffer...if Klinton did not have the Repub congress his last 6 years...Carter II for sure.

The dems just love buying votes with other's money and apologizing or blaming America...they are sicko disgusting little teen brains. We all will suffer for years because of this angry sock puppet DUFUS.

YET ANOTHER OUTRAGE

OBAMA TARGETS 1st TWO AMENDMENTS

We all know he is going to find a way to seriously restrict talk radio because secular socialists detest debate.
This is also an interesting e mail I received today April 29.2009:
HR 45 Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sales Act of 2009
Obama gun control by secrecy.

Be aware of a new bill HR 45 introduced into the House.
This is the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sale Act of 2009.
We just learned yesterday about this on the Peter Boyles radio program.
Even gun shop owners didn’t know about this because it is flying under the radar.
To find out about this - go to any government website and type in HR 45 or Google HR 45 Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sales Act of 2009. You will get all the information.

Basically this would make it illegal to own a firearm - any rifle with a clip or ANY pistol unless:
.It is registered
.You are fingerprinted
.You supply a current Driver’s License
.You supply your Social Security #
.You will submit to a physical & mental evaluation at any time of their choosing
.Each update - change or ownership through private or public sale must be reported and costs $25
- Failure to do so you automatically lose the right to own a firearm and are subject up to a year in jail.

.There is a child provision clause on page 16 section 305 stating a child-access provision. Gun must be locked and inaccessible to any child under 18. The Government would have the right to come and inspect that you are storing your gun safely away from accessibility to children and fine is punishable for up to 5 yrs. in prison.

If you think this is a joke - go to the website and take your pick of options to read…
http://www.opencong ress.org/ bill/111- h45/text

This is just a “termite” approach to complete confiscation of guns and disarming of our society to the point we have no defense -
chip away a little here and there until the goal is accomplished before anyone realizes it.

The Second Amendment… . America’s original homeland security
