Despite the fact that he is batshit crazy, Rush Limbaugh continues to reign supreme over the GOP. The conservative talk show host has styled himself as the voice of the Republican Party, even as he spews hate-filled rhetoric and brazenly reiterates his hope that the president fails in his attempt to rescue the country from one of the worst financial crises in history.

His posturing is met with only quiet muttering by more moderate conservatives. Meanwhile, politicians who vocally challenge Limbaugh end up slimily backpedaling within one news cycle.

Why does Limbaugh inspire a strong enough following among many conservatives to warrant public respect by GOP heavyweights, who, undoubtedly, also privately think he’s batshit crazy?

In a recent article on AlterNet, Deepak Chopra suggests that Limbaugh’s popularity has little to do with what he’s actually saying. Instead, what keeps people tuning in is Limbaugh’s style -- that particular brand of loudly blared bile perfected by conservative talk show hosts in their decade of dominance over the airwaves.

According to Chopra, shock jocks like Limbaugh:

... exist purely as steam vents. The common citizen gets to be pissed off by the millions, unrelentingly, without cease or solution, and in return, he is praised. To be outraged is to be morally superior.

Your anger strips away tolerance, sympathy and regard for "the other." Hence the almost imperial bearing of Limbaugh, the bland certainty that because he never stops being angry, he never stops being right.

AlterNet readers had a chance to vent in response to the article.

Kcdrew writes that we shouldn’t underestimate the danger Limbaugh represents by viewing him as a distraction or a catharsis for bitter voters:

No, you can't merely be "entertained" by Rush "Porkulus" Limbaugh. You could, if he weren't any harm to people, but he is, and that's the problem. What he does to those same illegal immigrants, women, gays and all the rest of us he doesn't like is real damage.

If it were only a joke, it would only be funny and entertainment. He does damage.

And that's not funny.

peacefullaim1 also argues that Limbaugh is no joke:

While I admire and respect Dr. Chopra, I'm with you, kcdrew, on this one. Limbaugh brings out the worst in his listeners. There is something unhealthy to the point of sinister is the way he matter-of-factly states the most absurd and hateful things. He, quite literally, makes me sick...

John Annis agrees:

You're absolutely correct, and people would do well to consider that by according him any status, including that of Court Jester, they are giving him credibility.

Vile reptiles like Limbaugh have split the American public, perhaps irretrievably, and you will have to live with the consequences for years to come. It's not a prospect I could countenance, and I am surprised at the idea that this creature should be given any more breathing space.

In many European countries, a lot of what he says would be considered inflammatory and inciting, and he would be dealt with appropriately. After all, who needs this kind of filth? Don't we have enough hatred around without paying some hatemonger $400 million over the next few years just to spread more?

If you treat him like a clown but still listen to him, you are part of the problem. Why don't you just park him in the nearest psychiatric facility and move on?

But bizeeb is spooked by the seeming call for censorship in John Annis’ comment:

"In many European countries, a lot of what he says would be considered inflammatory and inciting, and he would be dealt with appropriately."

Censorship is never the answer. I hate defending people like Limbaugh, but if you think he shouldn't have the freedom to express himself, then you are in the wrong, not him.

Annis counters:

This is how liberals allow people like him to flourish, by allowing him rights which he would not be prepared to allow the rest of us.

If we have a Muslim preaching hate every weekend, and inciting other fanatics to rise up against us, then this is regarded as incitement to violence and/or hatred, and is a criminal offense.

If we have neo-Nazis (for want of a better term) holding meetings to further an agenda of anti-Semitism, then they are breaking the law.

If we have people like the odious Westboro Baptist Church spewing their anti-gay filth, then they are breaking a law and will be punished -- in fact Fred Phelps would not be permitted access to this country (the U.K.).

This is not about censorship; it is about the rule of commonsense law. We do not have people like him here, and he would not be permitted a platform. Show me one thing he has ever said which is positive and constructive and designed to be inclusive. Who needs this?

This is not about someone's right to free speech. It is about keeping a bowl of pus boiling in the kitchen and putting up with the stench because of some imaginary "freedom." You try exercising your "freedom of speech" in a public place controlled by the fascists and see how far you get before you are arrested.

It is an alternate reality for the far right voting block to believe they are the patriots. "The Party of Lincoln" - that strove to eliminate the idea that one man was of greater worth than another -- now supports a man who makes $400 MILLION to do what? He produces nothing of value, but whispers "FIRE!", and like any other agitator derives a smug self rectitude as the gas bag alfa male. His idol is anything he can do to sell product, increase his net worth, his business value, and he has admitted as much in public. It really is a just comparison to a personality like Hitler, who was a master in goading the populace into supporting him, which made it easy to loot the societies he invaded, and that in turn gave the fuel to continue the destruction. It is ALL ABOUT MONEY -- if that's what you are about, you are part of the far right.

and I have been saying, for many years now, that Rush Limbaugh is the worst thing to happen to America I have seen in my lifetime. He has caused so much damage on many levels that I don't think it can be corrected. And if there is any credit for this windbag pile of shit, who has influenced so many, thank George H. W. Bush, and Newt Gingrich who brought him into the big picture. God help America.

Bread of Hate

Rush has made a fortune "feeding the bread of hate" in Dr. King's words. He validates and affirms the powerless, typically white, rural, prejudiced, under-educated male. It's a tough gig, being a powerless, white, rural, prejudiced, under-educated male in America today. The formula for getting ahead has changed, and they aren't part of it.

It is possible to overlook the fact that Rush's message is essentially no different to that of many fascist demagogues throughout history, but that's what it comes down to. For El Rushbo to continue to sell advertising (his only purpose, by the way) and to continue to make his millions it is necessary for his audience to feel that they are the victims. If Barack manages to improve the lot of the average person in any measurable way: by bringing about universal health care, for instance, his audience will shrink, but never go away. That's because hate always has an audience.

One thing though- I don't think he is going to be around much longer. He is obviously very unhealthy, and no amount of money can prevent his intemperate nature from destroying him from the inside out. If he gave up cigars and meat and really lost 50 pounds for good I would worry. As it is, he'll be out of here before long. Either his liver will rot, or his heart will explode, or an artery in his brain will erupt. I'm surprised he doesn't take better care of himself.

Rush to Stupidity
Posted by: Tom Degan on Mar 14, 2009 3:37 AM

In a healthy country populated with an intelligent, enlightened citizenry, Rush Limbaugh would today be standing on the bread line - right behind (or perhaps in front of) Sean Hannity, Michael "Savage" Wiener and Ann Coulter. He probably would have ended up as a used car salesman or a clerk in a liquor store. His opinion would not have been taken seriously by anyone except maybe a sympathetic bartender. Some bartenders are pretty good psychologists not to mention being fairly adept at feigning interest in the most boring of topics. There is a gentleman named Bill Vaughan who used to tend bar at the old Orange Inn Tap Room here in Goshen, New York. Heaven knows how many hours the poor guy spent listening to me waxing inebriate on all matter of subjects from the deplorable state of American politics to the age-old question as to who was the funniest of the two: Stan Laurel or Oliver Hardy? I would imagine that in a perfect society, no one other than a patient, world-weary and kindly mixologist would ever have bothered paying any attention to the opinions expressed by the likes of Rush Limbaugh.

His fawning audience of giddy, sycophantic little robots (who cheerfully refer to themselves as "ditto-heads") are spoon-fed a daily diet of ignorance, fear and propaganda under the guise of "excellence in broadcasting". One of the most annoying things about the man is his positively inflated opinion of himself. At the beginning of every broadcast he even compares himself to God, implying that his talent is "on loan" from the Almighty Himself. And he never gets tired of telling his clueless listeners how much power he has. That he has a lot of power and influence cannot be denied, but he never tires of reminding us of this unfortunate fact.

"We need to stop giving them coupons where they can go buy all kinds of junk. We just don't have the money. They're taking out, they put nothing in. And I'm sick and tired of playing the one phony game I've had to play and that is this so-called compassion for the poor. I don't have compassion for the poor."

Rush Limbaugh

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth"

Jesus of Nazareth

From all that I have read and watched and listened to, the one common denominator that is shFar Right is that they appeal to the very worst angels of our nature. And quite often, the recipients of their hateful ire are the most helpless among us. For the last thirty years, thanks to the abolition of the Fairness Doctrine, these people have dominated America's national political dialogue. It's high time we take it back, don'cha think?

Rush Limbaugh is not unique to American history. Three quarters of a century ago the opinion media was polluted by the minds of people like Westbrook Pegler, George Sokolsky and Walter Winchell. While they were all able to enjoy great fame and treasure while they were alive, death would find the three of them consigned history's garbage heap, forgotten and disgraced. Indeed, during the thirties and forties Winchell was arguably the most famous man in America. And yet when he died in 1972, the only person who bothered to show up at his funeral was his daughter. Do you remember the name Walter Winchell? Don't feel bad if you don't; not many people do.

Rush Limbaugh, too, will suffer posterity's indifference. Of that you may be completely certain.

There is no doubt in my mind that Limbaugh is a font of evil but blaming his popularity on his "leadership" abilities seems a mistake to me. The reason for his popularity is that he has better than others been able to strike an existing chord in his already sick ditto heads i.e if Limbaugh retired any blowhard that could play a similar tune would stand a good chance of taking over.

Why do people listen to Limbaugh? Two reasons. The first is the same reason they voted Republican: Limbaugh offers bumper-sticker answers to complicated problems.

Many are also drawn to a style of no-holds-barred bluntness. There's been a perception that Democrats wouldn't tell the truth for fear of offending some constituency. Reagan took office, fired striking air traffic controllers, blasted "welfare queens".... and won re-election handily. Ross Perot galvanized lots of people in '92. Many Americans yearn for a plain-speaking leader who's not afraid to break eggs if it solves problems.

The catch in Limbaugh's case being that he is blunt-spoken, racist, dishonest, mean, and dumb. And his prescriptions won't cure anything.

I'm not saying ignorance is bad. I am ignorant about brain surgery and partial integrals in calculus. But, the average American is ignorant about the world outside of our borders, the economy and many other things. Rush plays on this ignorance and has made million$. Have you ever tried to have an intelligent discussion with a Rush-listener? It is impossible. Truth, facts and reality do not play into their games. They are proud to be ignorant about what they support and believe.

I can already tell you people with a straight face that a lot of these folks who listen to Limbaugh and love him wouldn't if only we actually had a party that represented us working class liberals. The Democrats have been selling out for ages and despite attempts by 3rd parties to force the Ds and Rs to actually pay attention to and address the plight of the working class, the two parties shut them off every way possible. People are then disgusted that their pols are selling them out and are rendered lost as to where to redirect their anger. From there, traitors such as Limbaugh are ready to swoop in and cash in on their misdirected anger. We have more "Joe the Plumbers" than ever for this reason alone. They think that Limbaugh and Dobson will magically lift them to "glory" and will even fall for their cheaptalk rhetoric. Maybe if 3rd parties were actually given a chance would Limbaugh fade into the background because the Ds and Rs would be forced to pay attention to the working class and less on the elitist class.

A few comments....

If masses of people didn't listen and buy his products and those he advertises, Rush would dry up and blow away. It's as simple as that.
It's silly to pass judgement on Rush Limbaugh, or any other media apparition, unless you've taken the time to actually listen to them for a period....

You simply don't know what you're talking about otherwise....
Parroting other talking heads doesn't cut it...you still don't know what you're talking about....

Finally, there's Amendment I of the Bill of Rights.....

I have listened to Limbaugh, and for an extended period...I found him to be boring rattletrap.....
Certainly no reason to promote censorship...That's the beginning of the slippery slope....

I don't listen to either Limbaugh or Beck with the constancy that would be necessary for taking thorough and careful notes---but let me just share my silly fantasy. I find something little girlish in Beck, and somehow I think of him as playing one of those birthday party games where girls stand in a circle, one of them runs around the periphery and drops a handkerchief behind somebody and quietly skitters away, then the dropped handkerchief is noticed, chases ensue, and all hell breaks loose. Beck's little trick is dropping the idea that angry American citizens might resort to armed insurrection. Watch him do this; watch him skitter away. "Oh, do you really think so?" he will incredulously ask the guest he has egged on to predict armed resistance of the Obama government. "Gosh, so you really think Americans have had all they're going to take, and now they're going to pick up their guns and defend what they believe in, and what they've worked for all their lives? Because people are locked and loaded, and I hear this from Americans all the time," etc etc. If Limbaugh gives listeners a way to organize themselves around their rage, Beck suggests a way to operationalize that rage.

Who is Rush really mad at?
Posted by: j9guy on Mar 14, 2009 7:44 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I have been thinking for some time as to why Rush is so angry. Why there seems to be such deep rage inside of him. I thought perhaps it was because he might have had such a terrible childhood and that his mommy had neglected him so much that he has not only developed a massive anger for women but now for the whole world. But then again that may just be, as the Repugs say, “Psycho babble”. So Psycho babble aside, I have figured not what he is angry at but what he really likes and that is symbolizes by the “Big fat hot thing” he has in his mouth as every picture of him seems to show. And that’s it, right? And he really should come out of the closet don’t you think?

Different strokes for different folks....Many of those who listen to Limbaugh do so for reasons many others cannot understand. Some listen out of disbelief, some listen only to argue with him and you see these folks driving alongside you in RUSH hour traffic, all red in the face, veins standing out, the free hand waving about mystically, a finger pointing out and shaking, and the occaisonal chest pump with the hand closed. As the head turns from side to side you notice that they are yelling at the top of their lungs and you thank the Lord both their window and yours are up.

Back in the day, there came one Howard Cossel who many had to put up with through many a football game and many boxing matches. Most turned the TV off at the end or changed channels for useful commentary, but....Some bars kept the set tuned to Cossel and his idiocy so the winner of the nights in house drawing could throw a brick into the TV during Howie's tormentuous explanation of what all had just watched (as though it needeed to be done). I hear that now with the advent of the wide screen TV, where you can fit Limbaugh and another person and still see both, that he may make a bid to do a comeback . Imagine destroying a 60 inch flat screen with a brick? Now , that's a RUSH indeed.

How many folks went to see Mike Tyson fight hoping to see him get pounded? How many of those wanted to see an ear of his disappear?

IMO....If one were to factor out those who see RUSH as just a RUSH for adrenaline's sake, along with those who view it as slap stick comedy, his following would not be so daunting. His propensity to abuse oxy contin was overlooked as soon as most started viewing him as the DOPE de jour.

What's lost here...

The issue here is that conservatives like Limbaugh, Beck and O'Reilly get propped up by the fact that progs tune in to hear themselves get disparaged. If progs stopped watching FOX and listening to Rush because of the amusement/reconnaissance factor, their ratings would suffer. I'm guilty of it too - it's like a train wreck that you just can't look away from.

On the other side, conservatives rarely if ever consume liberal media. The reason they're so apt to call NBC, ABC and CBS liberal is because they don't expose themselves to much more than that. Conservatives I know don't watch liberal shows to get the other side or just to see what the "enemy" is talking about. Most of them won't give Comedy Central their money for religious reasons, and Bible thumpers would be excommunicated if they got caught watching Maddow.

I'll skip my wish for Rush and his Phallic cigars.
Rush is Nothing but a ShockJock- But far less impressive than Howard Stern. Howard not only takes on the Political BS, but the outrageous sexual or humiliating aspect to everyday life- Howard has Range, the ability to expand his boundries. Rush just runs over the same hate and fear crap he always does- with some meglomania thrown in.
But what is so outrageous is that those who hate him are giving him life! Our sick morbid curiosity is feeding this fat lazy vile excuse for human flesh!
Granted ignoring him will not make him go away- but it will relinquish him to the Fringe of media existence where he deserve to be.Cops push traffic past fatal car crashes, one to keep traffic moving, Second to spare Us the view of the Gore and three to provide those involved a little privacy.Let's Allow the Right to experience this horrendous accident with the gift of solitude.

Back in the 1930s it was Father Charles Coughlin, the radio priest of the 1930s. He was the Rush Limbaugh of his day, first supporting, then opposing the New Deal. A virulent anti-semite, he later supported Hitler, which eventually led to his undoing. The church failed to take him off the air, until his pro Nazi sentiments became too much of an embarrassment.

Anyone who lives in the Detroit area may have seen his church, The Shrine of the Little White Flower, a grotesquely ugly, tacky piece of work. fitting shrine to this character. I wonder what Rush will leave behind for a shrine?

It's an obvious answer: People listen to "El Rushbo" because they agree with what he has to say and like his style - the same reasons I generally like Bill Maher and Michael Moore.
Although I've listened to right wing radio too much at times to the point I concede some great points are occasionally raised there, I generally find the righties' shows only help me reinforce my own lefty beliefs.
And I agree with the righties in that any government attempt to stifle criticism should be met with a firm reading of the First Amendment and a swift kick in the ass.
That said, people will listen to Rush and Mike Savage and the rest because of their bombastic and entertaining (to some) style and that they appeal to people of certain mind-sets, be it the America-at-all-costs crowd, the media-is-liberally-biased crowd, or the "our government is failing us in favor of cheap immigrant labor," crowd, the gay-hating crowd or others.
The way to attack those mind-sets isn't by spewing leftern vitriol and calling someone a fat druggie; it's leading - and living - by example and educating all with the hope that things can change for the better.

deflecting blame from the rich to the poor
Posted by: roy f on Mar 14, 2009 10:10 AM

Rush's message is what the message of all fascists is: deflecting blame from those at the top, who are really at fault for what's going on in this country, to those at the bottom. The non-rich were slowly sinking economically up till last year as the Republicans (and even the Democrats to some extent) redistributed wealth upward to the super-rich. That is the source of the dittoheads' rage. As usual, fascists like Rush get people to blame immigrants, foreigners, the poor, blacks, gays -- anyone but the billionaires and multi-millionaires who are the real culprits.

For the past 28 years since Reagan came to power and the Democrats shifted far to the right, both parties have been redistributing wealth upward. They have kept the economy going, even as they have taken money away from most non-rich consumers, by having them go more and more into debt to keep them spending. But people can only go so much into debt, so just as happened in 1929, we are rapidly spiraling into another depression. As the non-rich now plunge economically, expect the dittoheads' deflected rage to rise accordingly, as they try to shoot themselves in the feet politically even more so than before.

The way to counteract Rush's message is to point out who the real culprits are. Unfortunately, almost all of the politicians and mass media are in the pay of the culprits, so it's difficult to get that message out. While Democratic politicians and voters don't blame those at the bottom the way Republicans do, neither do they sufficiently blame those at the top. (When have you ever heard a Democratic politician put things as bluntly as this, and how often do you hear Democratic voters do so?) They either act like it's a mystery how everything went wrong, or blame it on the particular people involved in this particular crisis (people who sold Adjustable Rate Mortgages or created arcane financial instruments, for instance). Almost all Democratic politicians hide the Big Picture just as Republicans do, and most Democratic voters don't see it, or only see it vaguely: that our whole economic and political system is designed to redistribute wealth upward. Until that message gets out, we will continue to have enraged totally-clueless dittoheads, and even many somewhat-clueless liberals as well.

I think Limbaugh and some of his type are popular because they offer reasons and solutions that require no thought. They point to big boogymen as the root of all evil and a simplistic ideology as salvation.

There is a huge number of people on both right and left that are satisfied with this instant confirmation of their views.

Simple quick solutions are the preferred ones. Even if you just have to pretend that they work.

Not long ago Limbaugh and his type would not have reached a large audience. Media had no time for such trivial people. They were crowded out by those who offered real information. Now there are 24 hour a day pipelines for the trivial. Crowding out the real information.

Lifestyles and shallow educational styles crowd out the time and ability to actually process information. It is served up prepackaged and instant. This is eroding all things down to this level.

Bibles and Rifles

Rush's listeners tend to be the same folks Barack meant when he upset a lot of people by saying he knew he would not appeal to those who, in times of stress and crisis, turn to their Bibles and guns. While I appreciate Deepak's insight -- he posits that there may be a value in Rush saying things that help his fan base "blow off steam" -- how many of them pose a threat of the sort we see almost daily in mass murderers who end up killing themselve by their own hands or cops brought to arrest them?

But even if we prove such connections, I favor letting the Rushbos of this world have their say. I am forever mindful of the great late Oliver Wendell Holmes who wrote a Supreme Court dissent in a censorship case ending with his observation that if the First Amendment is to have any meaning at all, it demands that we allow all ideas to have trade in the marketplace of ideas, where they will be shouted down without interference by censors.

Rush is not the problem. His listeners are. Like him, they are insensitive slugs, oblivious to individual rights -- to freedom, really.

I confess I ve listened to Rushbo for quite some time, and I have yet to see this evil person you talk about,he is more like a motivator to achieve one's best with out help from the government and in turn do your little part to grow the economy and inspire your neighbor into being better, help the destitute, when you have to give, give to the one who is not abusing one s generosity, and so on and on, at no time has he ever wished harm to any one, when he says Obama to fail he has explained Obama's socialists plans and ideas, what is wrong with not sharing a socialist point of view? i am a cool cat,I listen and talk to both right and left, and then form an opinion, sometimes I may be on the right column, sometimes on the left, this time I am on the right,I don t share our presiden't s point of view, but i am and have always been a capitalist,in that system, you rise and fall on your own,I don t give my money to lazy people, nor do I invest in known money losing enterprises, which is exactly what mr Obama wants the taxpayer..ahem!!! ME,to do,in that way I strongly disagree with Mr presidente, and this time just as strong I agree with El Rushbo, fuzzy harmless my dear friend Rush, but you guys are my friends too.

Bravo to Alternet's editorial staff for coming up with the BRILLIANT idea of distiling the "response" to an issue and setting it as a "virgin" posting. BRAVO! Why are people afraid to say it? Rush is a psychopath -- no conscience, no shame, no regard for anything but personal gain... and his ditto heads are right wing authoritarians looking for "da Fuhrer" to "solve" all our problems. They don't respond to reason, they don't consider the public good... the rational solution is to keep moving forward and leave them behind. You can't please everyone, so let's roll up our sleeves and get to work doing what's contributing to the common good, and stop cooperating in giving psychopaths "equal time" -- recognize them for what they are and leave them behind.

This discussion is based on the false assumption that Rush Limbaugh is popular.

But he's not. Shows like Rush's are an artificial construct of a rigged system.

In fact, studies show that less than half of hate-radio listeners identify themselves as conservatives. Hate radio is an artificial construct forced upon a liberal nation.

The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio

As earlier commenters have noted, hate radio has done incalculable damage to the well-being of our country. But this pernicious phenomenon represents a small group of degenerates, not most Americans.

The Frankster had an excellent column in this morning's NY Times about Limbaugh and his ilk.

The morality police - the bloviating gas bags of the religious right - have fallen harder and lower than the stock market. I agree with Frank Rich that this can only be a good thing.

The greatest religious writer of the twentieth century is a man whose name most people have never even heard. When you have a moment or two, read the writings of Thomas Merton. He was a man who took seriously the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth in the Sermon on the Mount:

Blessed are the peace makers,
For they shall be called sons [and daughters] of God.

It has truly been an amazing (and amusing) thing to watch these so-called "spokesmen of Christ" defending the morally indefensible these past thirty years. And now - finally - they're going away. It seems an answer to a prayer.

Thank you, Lord.

I like it when Alternet writes articles about Limbaugh. The comments born of ignorance and hatred are very demonstrative of where the left is today, and explains a lot about why you have elected incompetents like obama, reed, pelosi, dodd, and frank, and former KKK guys like byrd.

Item one, the hate. The hate is all right here on the left as demonstrated in comment after comment, guys and gals.. I have heard Limbaugh many times, and hate is not his bag. Knight's run-on sentance was much more accurate than any other post here.

The left hates Limbaugh because he puts their idiotic ideas into the arena of debate. Many of them are just plain bad ideas, and they will not stand the light of day. Since the MSM still has obama and the DNC's penis in their mouth, there is no one left to debate the ideas and expose them other than rush, hannity, et al.

In my personal case, I read both sides, because somewhere in the debate lies the basis of an informed opinion. Reading only this article and comments would not lead to anything but an opinion of Limbaugh formed of ignorance and hatred. Reading only Limbaugh, you would think that the democrats are comprised exclusively by dullards, an opinion that this article reinforces more that el rushbo never could himself.

The source of your hatred and frequent desire to shut down opposition speech is that America likes an informed opinion, the left wants to hide their ideas from the light of day.

A good example of this is the article the other day about 'Can we use the S word now..' In the comments lot of socialists came out of the closet.

The problem is, if you actually brought the idea of changing the US from a constitutional republic to a democratic socialist state out and put it to the people, it would never fly. It would take troublesome things like convincing the electorate to change the constitution and whole way of government. It is much preferable to boil the frog one degree at a time and quietly move the country in that direction.

The real reason that the left hates Rush is that he shines the light of truth in their ideas and forces them into the arena of debate and public awareness. While not all ideas on the left are bad, some are, and they would just as soon that they not be exposed for the incompetence, socialism, or criminality that they represent.

Those that accuse Limbaugh of racism or hatred have no idea what they are talking about. You are ignorant drones parroting Big Brother's party line talking points. Feel free to prove me wrong with quotes and links rather than generalized attacks.

BTW, who is your favorite socialist? Pol Pot? Castro? Chavez? Stallin? Hitler? Mousolini? Kim Jong Il? Mao? Ho Chi Min?

I find that most of these people who appeal to Dittohead types speak a more common and direct language.
They get to the point fast and simple. Though the point is often totally wrong.

Too often I notice the people who offer more in depth and correct assessments also take a far too winding road to the point. Along the way they will throw in many obscure references to highlight how smart they are. References to ancient history, to philosophers, personal name dropping.

Right now I think we just don't have time for this. Connect the relevant dots in the shortest route. Speak in the language and social frame of the people you really want to hear the story.

If you are coming across like an old professor, then the ones who will hear you out to the end are already enrolled in your class.

The Daily Show is getting the air time. They keep it short, to the point and sharp. With an Amen Brothers and Sisters in the form of "F@#K You !!!" that a vast majority needs to hear.

Here's the answer I sent back.
Rush is a puke and deserves no ones support or any form of respect. All the GOP are the same. None of you cares one bit about what's happening to this country except for your millionaire friends and billionaire donors. That includes the troops you so callously send to the slaughter in illegal wars of aggression most of YOU were too cowardly to fight in yourselves when it was your time to show your phony patriotism. You cover up for your corporate buddies who harm our troops and excuse yourselves by waving your weak hands in the air and saying they volunteered.
What you should all do is get yourselves each a big fat cigar, a bottle of oxycontin, and a FAT SUIT and join Limbo in his worship of the gangster era you all wish you could have been top players in. Or build yourselves a new wild wild west and duel yourselves to death in the Cayman Islands or where ever you have your own personal tax dodges. You are all a disgrace and a bunch of traitorous dogs.

Leaders LIE, Civilians DIE, and Lessons of History are IGNORED!

Suckered Into the Power Elite's Divide and Rule Strategy

Many Americans have had trouble adjusting to rapid change. We were feeling really good about themselves, with the big victories in WWII, America’s technological superiority and, purportedly, our moral superiority and, for many, exceptional prosperity. Then BOOM, the stalemate in Korea, school integration, the extension of voting rights to all our citizens, women feeling less inclined to be stomped on or play second fiddle, and to top it all off we get our butts kicked in Indochina, followed up by the great assaults on American machismo: the pill and abortion and gay rights. And then there are those obnoxious liberals who didn’t have much problem with much of this.
Then, Reagan, the prophet of profligacy and supplier of missiles to the Moslem holy warriors in Afghanistan and to Ayatollah Khomeni, but close ally of Saddam Hussein, comes along to tell our dispirited people that we don’t have to feel bad about the carpet bombing, the dumping of all that dioxin and napalm all over the Indochinese, throwing those prisoners out of helicopters, the My Lai massacre, etc. etc. for ten damn years. For one thing, they don’t take Jesus as their savior and aren’t going to the big barbecue in the sky when they die anyway. Like Reagan, Limbaugh and the rest of his gang are soulless demagogues. The ruling class loved them because, like the aristocrackers of the old South, they prevent the large majority from uniting to protect and promote their own interests. Like the Southerner, landless and barely literate, duped into fighting for someone ,else’s slaves, the dittoheads of today fall prey to the divisive tactics of the hate radio demagogues, while the fat cats laugh all the way to the bank(or DID, until even they started taking all the free market fundamentalist B.S. too seriously themselves.) The dittoheads can drive around in their monster pickups and brandish the Confederate flag all they want, but in the end, these are the symbols of the Southern Sucker.

Swastika

Further to Bizeeb's comment.

The swastika is an ancient symbol, temporarily (on the universal scale) perverted by the Nazis.

Almost anything can be twisted to serve a purpose, sometimes good, sometimes sinister.

Individuals like Limbaugh contribute to a perversion of expression that serves to generate profit for his employers.

Any expression in the service of profit is not to be considered free speech. Mr. Limbaugh, or his employer, is entitled to bring his soapbox to the park and express as high and mightily as he'd like. His ideas will be received with either accolades from those who bother to stop and listen, or he will be pelted with rotten tomatoes. In neither case will he have been paid for his exertions and will be at worst, a public nuisance.

On the other hand, if he is paid money for his "expression" and money supports his line of communication into homes and ears, that is not free speech and no one should feel hesitant to regulate or eradicate it, if it doesn't serve the greater good.

That said, unless the idea of greater good can be made to turn a profit, the capitalists will continue to make their bucks off selling the fetish of unbridled individualism.
