At a time when racial conflict and discrimination are on the rise around the world, the Administration of the world's first black U.S. president will not be attending the world's most important conference on race and racism.

In what may signal a dangerous new, "post-racial" approach to global race relations, President Barack Obama's Administration announced that it will not attend the second World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance in Geneva next April. According to this article in the New York Times, the Administration will boycott the conference to protest what it deems the unfair equation of Zionism with racism in the outcome documents of the first conference held in Durban, South Africa, and now the second conference, also known as "Durban II, as well." Other concerns cited by Administration officials, some of whom recently attended preparatory meetings in Geneva, in their justification of  the boycott include a proposal to place restrictions on the defamation of religions and any language calling for reparations for slavery. According to the Times article, one of the primary reasons for the Obama Administration's decision was that "Israel and some American Jewish groups urged a boycott of the April conference, and several close American allies, including Canada."

Praised by groups that lobbied against Durban II like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), whose leaders applauded the U.S. decision, "for refusing to participate in a process that would in any way brand Israel as a racist country," the Obama Adminsitration's boycott comes at the worst possible time for a planet facing rapidly increasing levels of recession-inspired racism, xenophobia and hatred.

Increasing numbers of experts report that most continents -- Europe, Africa, Asia -- are seeing exponential growth in hate crimes, ethnic tensions and other manifestations of the racism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance, the kind on intolerance that will be discussed at the Durban II Conference. And in the Américas, the very palpable rise in racial tensions, hate crimes and other discrimination are well illustrated by events here in the "post-racial" United States: the NY Post Chimpanzee cartoon scandal, the U.S. visit (including a film screening in Congress) by Danish racist Veert Wilder and the massive protests against the racial profiling, humiliation and other practices of Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, to name a few taking place in the United States. And these were only the events that the Obama Administration was silent about this past week.

The Obama Administration's silence on both these racial incidents and on such fundamentally racial -and global-problems as the "drug war," criminal justice reform and immigrant detention contrasts with the much-lauded statements on race by Attorney General Eric Holder. In statements made to coincide with the start of Black History Month, Holder called the U.S. "a nation of cowards" when it comes to discussion of race.

elected by white people would ever send a representative to a conference on racism. Especially when so many Americans have deluded themselves about race ralations. The Zionist have successfully remained victims even when they preemptively attack. That thinking mirrors those Americans who still equate the war in Iraq with 911.

We must NOT be divided.

In Truth, there is only the People.

Though many layers of confusion divide them.

The only true division amongst the People is between those who take more than they require, and those who recieve less than they are due.

Color is of absolutely no relevance.

The problem in Palestine is explainable by the above truisim, no other explanation is needed.

Until the absolute Right of all persons -in whatever nation or condition- to the basic hierachy of Human needs:

1. Water.
2. Food.
3. Shelter.
4. Health.
5. Interaction.
6. Expression.
7. Movement.

(with malleable order pertaining to individual situations)

...is aknowledged, upheld, and maintained by social compact, we will continue to see Injustice expressed in this manner.

The ability to see conflict is a useful tool, but it does not make the fights less hard, or the stakes less high.

instead of moving into a new and very challenged century w/esteemable hope, we're being dragged down into a dark, draconian hole.

Connect the dots, what could have and what should have been a very cool little country conspired w/others to impose their very selfish agenda - 9/11 was the 1st salvo.

Arrest Silverstein/Bushcon, Mukasey and the DOJ have made that very hard, 100 interogation tapes 'lost' in the nick of time.

Consider.

Obama betrayed his mentor Rev. Jeremiah Wright and disassociated himself from him. Why? Wright spoke the truth about the crimes of American Empire againt native Americans, African Americans, Japanese Americans, and againt people in far off lands like Vietnam.

Obama's economic team is led by Wall Street charlatans who engineered the current economic fiasco. Obama contintues to promote the policy that rewards the investment bankers, his true masters.

Obama isn't a man of principal. He isn't even a man. He is a house negro with a gift of oratory.

Your reporter needs to check his facts. Geert (not Veert) Wilders isn't a Dane. He is Dutch, and a member of the Parliament of the Netherlands, and is the latest in a steady stream of right-wing Dutch legislators who specialize in tormenting and dehumanizing their Muslim neighbours.

Correction to article- Veert Wilder
Posted by: AKD on Mar 3, 2009 7:23 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I thought it pertinent to point out an error in this article. The author of this article may have missed some of the 'nuts & bolts' of the issue when researching the topic. Here is a minor correction- Veert Wilder is a Dutch man from the Netherlands, not Danish as stated. Correction #2 is that Wilder is not, per se, against free speech but rather desires a change that limits free speech in such forms that promote hatred. violence, and murder. [Bottom line- stop hate speech]. You can view his movie here at http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=216_1207467783
Then ask yourself, is our world really made better by allowing radical factions and individuals the right to demand the elimination (ahem...murder)of men, women, and children who do not share their faith? Are we doing justice to humanity by maintaining the 'freedom' to stir up and provoke acts of violence and murder just because there is a law saying we have the right to do so? Just a thought. Here is an additional link to Wilder's speech at a conference if you are interested http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/025036.php

Oh yeah, racism is dead - the hell you say......
Posted by: Spiritgirl on Mar 3, 2009 7:35 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Just because the President of the United States is a black man - please stop deluding yourself that racism is dead! It is unfortunate that the Zionists while pretending to be "victims", refuse to recognize the holocaust they are perpetrating against the Palestinians! Their continued settlement of Palestinian land and their apartheid wall are proof positive that they have no intention of ever truly trying to compromise for a real and lasting peace!

What they fail to recognize is that their very actions are leading to create the very "terrorists" that "they say" they want to avoid! Though the Zionists feel that the Palestinians are the "interlopers" on "their ground" - for the most part - the majority of these people are Ashkanazi (European) Jews, whose grandparents for at least 4 or more generations back are buried in European lands! That after WWII no one country was willing to take them all in, so the British gave them land that they had no right to give them as they were colonizers!

That the British finally gave up and left, so that the Americans have been the Zionists blind "bullying big brother", is part of the reason that the American government has been so hated in the Arab world! The fact that the American government has turned such a blind eye to the apartheid conditions that the Israeli's have created for the Palestinians, yet are so quick to condemn the Palestinians for fighting back. I wonder, who in America, feeling threatened in their homes for years on end, watching their children slaughtered for years, would say they too would be willing to lay down their arms to "negotiate" away their rights and the little bit of land that they have left, for you are a much better person than I.

I think it is past the time for any reasoning with the Zionists, much like over-indulged children, there is no longer any reasoning with them! The only thing they will understand is monetary - so I think it the best thing the world can do is to help Israel to help herself - divest and force her to the negotiating table NOW!!!!

Many years ago, on the campus of the University of Illinois, I heard a conversation between two Jewish students. It shocked me so much that I remember it to this day.

1) Well, you know, ALL the great men have been Jews. [he rattled off a list]

2) I have to disagree. Washington, Jefferson, they were great, too.

1) Well, maybe so. But think! Think how much GREATER they would have been if they had been Jewish!!

There is nothing wrong with ethnic pride, but when it is carried to extremes, whether by Aryans like Hitler, or Zionists like Ben Gurion and Begin, the results are catastrophic.

No to Durban II

If the Durban conference actually addressed the problems of world conflict, that would be nice. However, Durban I was merely a hate-Israel forum as orchestrated by the Arabs. So I doubt Durban II will be any different. I doubt Muslims and Jew-haters will admit to being involved in most of the violence around the globe. No, it's much easier, for example, to blame the Mumbai massacres on "Hindu Zionists."

Well the real power behind both the American and Canadian Governments has struck again. Both countries to their great shame will not be present at a conference attended by every other country in the world (or a great majority of such countries). Truly how foolish is that? Two countries that supposedly support and practice non discrimination are sidelined by lobby groups. That makes me sick. Instead of doing the right thing, attending and having your voices heard , they decline and decide to stay home and pout. What patsies for well funded and vehemently anti-Palestinian lobby groups. As stated above both governments should be very ashamed of their cowardice.

Israel's apartheid system: intended to enable retention of illegal Jewish colonies in the West Bank

Bravo! The war on drugs is every bit as absurd and counterproductive, as the war on terror.

As Jimmy Carter makes very clear indeed, the Israeli apartheid system is intended to foster the insane policy of trying to keep most of the West Bank permanently even if this means permanent war or near-war. Is the Israel lobby going to bankrupt the US?

Much of the Muslim world genuinely believed that Obama could be different to Bush and truly welcomed the possibility of an America they could admire. Sadly, this decision, along with other positions taken since the change of administration, seems to indicate that there will be no paradigm shift in US attitudes to the Middle East. I suspect that once disillusioment takes root, much of the non-western world will again lose faith in America's capacity for good. But this time the rejection could be irreversible.

Have you researched the reason we aren't going?

One of the goal outcomes of this conference, is to declare "criticism of religion is a violation of human rights"

Maybe it is just me, but I'm with Obama, and in favor of our freedom of speech and the ability to criticize ANYTHING we want, including and especially, religion.

What part of Other concerns cited by Administration officials, some of whom recently attended preparatory meetings in Geneva, in their justification of the boycott include a proposal to place restrictions on the defamation of religions are you not understanding?

While there are many, many Israelis who do not subscribe to the ideas that are in your list of comments, too many of their leaders still do. One only has to reflect on Zippy Livni's recent comment that there is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This was prior to the recent devastation of Gaza, but even at that time food, water, education, etc. was being rationed irrationally by the Israelis and the usual - sonic booms at 3 a.m., bulldozing of houses (usually after dark with a ten minute warning), rubber bullets shot at children after Israeli soldiers called their mothers whores (wouldn't you throw rocks too?), and on and on. Not to mention the Israeli violations of the truce, their kidnapping of Hamas officials and on, and on, and on.
Americans continue to feel panic if they criticize Israel. The fear of being called anti-semitic is irrational. I've been called that quite a bit and it really doesn't hurt that much. A lot the same as having been called a "nigger lover" in the 50s and 60s. Sticks and stones...
We all need to consider human needs, standing up for what's right (not righteous), and taking ethical/moral positions no matter what small minded, self-righteous people might call us.

People commenting here are having a little racist fun-fest of their own, in my opinion.

The Conference in question has a very bad reputation for extremism, anti-Semitism and nearly violent invective. Its not a cool place. There's a difference between deploring Israel's actions toward the Palestinians and attacking Jews as a people. One, if done effectively, might have done some good. The other is just hatred.

Colin Powell attended Durban in 2001, and made this statement when he withdrew his team from the Conference:

"Today I have instructed our representatives at the World Conference Against Racism to return home. I have taken this decision with regret, because of the importance of the international fight against racism and the contribution that the Conference could have made to it. But, following discussions today by our team in Durban and others who are working for a successful conference, I am convinced that will not be possible. I know that you do not combat racism by conferences that produce declarations containing hateful language, some of which is a throwback to the days of "Zionism equals racism;" or supports the idea that we have made too much of the Holocaust; or suggests that apartheid exists in Israel; or that singles out only one country in the world--Israel--for censure and abuse.

I deeply respect the goals of South African President Mbeki and Foreign Minister Zuma in hosting this conference. I strongly support the good work of Secretary General Annan to try to make it come out right. The United States and delegations interested in a successful outcome had worked productively in Durban on the other key issues of the Conference and were hopeful that they could be resolved. I wish that it could have turned out more successfully."

Canada and some other European countries are also boycotting the conference this year. Is half the civilized world in Israel's pocket, do you think? I'm assuming that some of you DO think, and not all of you are so nervous that you need to rampage on any article that's got a couple of hot buttons for your dining, dancing, raping and pillaging pleasure. OMIGOD! OBAMA! ISRAEL! HE'S A RACIST! A TOADY! A JEW! A Jew? Well, what next?

Sheep.

If Israel is racist, then Obama and USA is racist to support Israel.

But what about the Palestianians? Is Obama racist if he supports the Palestinians? I read on the internet that the Palestinians will not allow any Israelis to live in the Palestinian held territory.
