Sen. David Vitter’s phone number was found in the records of the notorious D.C. madam. Now he faces re-election (and massive karmic payback) against a sultry adult entertainer named Stormy. Max Blumenthal has an exclusive interview.

With 2010 midterm elections approaching, Louisiana Republican Sen. David Vitter is positioning himself as a leading conservative stalwart. In July 2008, Vitter joined accused bathroom-stall sex solicitor Sen. Larry Craig in co-sponsoring the anti-gay-marriage Marriage Protection Amendment, then addressed a massive antiabortion rally on the National Mall three days after Barack Obama's inauguration. Vitter was also the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's lone vote against sending Hillary Clinton's secretary of State nomination to the Senate floor.

Vitter's right-wing posturing appears to be an attempt at image rehabilitation. In July 2007, the senator's phone number appeared on a published list of phone records of a company owned by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the so-called DC Madam. Vitter confessed to "a serious sin" and revealed that he "asked for and received forgiveness from God and [his] wife." Though the GOP leadership also forgave Vitter, the revelation badly damaged his reputation as one of the Senate's rising conservative stars. In May 2008, Palfrey, the DC Madam, was found dead in an apparent suicide after being found guilty of running a prostitution ring.

This year, an ad appeared on Craigslist seeking "a female in some aspect of the adult-entertainment industry" to run against Vitter. Soon after, a website "drafting" porn actress Stormy Daniels to oppose Vitter sprouted up. Part publicity stunt, part political psy-ops tactic, the Draft Stormy initiative has already forced Vitter's scandalous past back into the limelight. The Louisiana Democratic Party denied any involvement in creating the website, but it is not complaining about Daniels' involvement in the race.

While traveling through Arizona last week, I learned that Daniels would be performing at a Phoenix strip club. I tracked the adult-video starlet down at her hotel and filmed the first interview with her since the Draft Stormy initiative began. During our exclusive interview, Daniels homed in on what she called Vitter's hypocrisy, declaring her intention to make his contradictory behavior the centerpiece of her campaign.

Vitter should be ousted

But I don't think an adult entertainer will beat him in the polls, although she's making a valid point.

Vitter unlike Spitzer

While former NY gov Spitzer was going thru his hassles re his lesbian call girl affair, the Repugs were strangely silent during the whole biz. They kept their mouths shut because it'd only call attention to their own blatant hypocrisy. Plus Spitzer never laid claim to be god's moral agent on earth worshipping "family values", unlike those stinkin' repugs.

Hey, ALTERNET...you're handing out our emails to third party websites (again).

Sending your readers' email addresses to third party websites violates your own terms of service.

Odd, in a story touting hypocrisy.

If you're confused, scroll up and find the form beginning with the words:

Your Password has been sent to the email address _________.

I realize you folks need to make money, but handing out (selling?) your reader's information won't get you a lot of support the next time Hazen asks for a Christmas bonus for Alternet.

Are there a different set of rules in play for republicans and democrats?
Posted by: Dr. P. Mooney on Feb 10, 2009 6:57 AM

It seems to me when democrats fall from grace and are caught dabbling in the arms of the oldest profession, it is an outrage to republicans and they are expected to resign their office immediately. Yet, when the very same thing happens to a republican, they claim the media and the democrats are using this for political advantage and the culprit continues in their position of power.

One could see Sen Craig opining about his innocence after pleading guilty for the tap dance and hand gestures in the men's bathroom aiming for the affections of an under-cover policeman, and then there is Vitter ( who seems to have an interest sexually in wearing diapers when cavorting with his favorite call-girls and hasn't the shame to stay in the background and keep his pie-whole shut after his phone number was in the black book of an hooker.) That went nowhere with the high morals of the republicans. There was Rush Limbaugh trying to smuggle his stash of illegal oxycontin and viagra for his trip to a Caribbean Island for some paid sexual fun. ( I think he was still in one of his many marriages at that time. ) At least the hebephile republican senator from Florida with the underage "page-boy" problem had the sense to resign and blame his lapse of ethics on alcohol abuse and finally admitted he was homosexual with an interest in boys instead of people his own age. There are the John McCain's, Newt Gingrich's, Vitter's and others on their first, second or third wives from cheating on the first one who can keep a straight face when they talk about the morals of others. There are also the ones on the democratic side that have fallen from grace but they are always expected to resign and many of them do. Why do the republicans get a pass on this?

Actually, I am not interested in what they do in private but the hypocrisy is astounding.

porn and vitters

I can find more respectability in open disclosure of the "porn-star" than I can in most any response of most elected politicians irregardless of the position they hold.

Vitter is ineffective for LA.

While he had begun and later worked to pass some initiatives entitling LA to a share of revenues from her mineral rights and had also been a vocal advocate of the LA coast, he is ineffective as this dead albatross senator.

At least the new boob would get less scron than then the old boob when it spoke, all things considering. Vitter's political career, demonstrably smart as he is, is over due to his stupidity.

However, that's not going to be the case, I suspect. My prediction? Democrat-turned-Republican-for-expediency John Kennedy will probably--finally--get an office.

Don't expect him to be a progressive, but do expect him to keep his trousers on. Isn't that the new standard in politics?

Stormy isn't the first porn star to run
Posted by: PaulK on Feb 10, 2009 10:58 AM

A few years ago, a female porn star ran for election to the Italian parliament, and won.

Then there's Jesse "The Body" Ventura. Technically, him inflating his muscles in his minimalist Spandex clothing and well-oiled chest was not hard-core pornography, but it went right to the edge for the medium of TV. We will never know whether his jock strap was packed with foam rubber or not.

Arnold Schwartzenegger knows all about the catwalk too, and his bod won lots of trophies. Amazing how a set of good deltoids can help someone rewrite a state tax code.

In any case, porn doesn't quite cross the line into prostitution, which is the degrading part of politics. Let's hope Stormy can preserve some of her good morals as she enters the pit.

Terrytom I love it

I love it!! It is general political science that people will more readily vote against something than for something or a person to be clear. Therefore, I am inclined to move so that I can vote for the porn star. The current rethugnican obstructionists in the congress are all voting so that Obama will fail show how they are worse than any porn flick. That is without any redeeming social value. Hypocrites all driven by greed and hate.

She will get lots of votes, sex sells, and that's her game. I noticed on E!, they just show them completely naked now and blur out the boobs and vaginas.
