Why Do So Few Speak Up for Gaza?

By Robert Scheer, Truthdig. Posted January 7, 2009.

Why are we so indifferent to the death and destruction in Gaza?

The major news outlets meekly accepted Israel’s banning of journalists from entering Gaza as an excuse for downplaying collateral civilian casualties, our president-elect, Barack Obama, has had little to say about an invasion that will much complicate his future Mideast peace efforts, and most commentators easily rationalize Israel’s many-more-eyes-for-an-eye killings.

Why is it that there is such widespread acceptance, beginning with the apologetic arguments of President Bush, that whatever Israel does is always justified as necessary to the survival of the Jewish state?

It is not.

While the Hamas rocket attacks are reprehensible, they are also an ineffectual challenge to Israel’s enormous security apparatus, and the severity of Israel’s response to them is counterproductive. Clearly, the very existence of Israel is not now, nor has it ever been, seriously challenged by anything the Palestinians did. Not back in 1948, when Israel was established as a state with insignificant Palestinian military resistance, nor at the time of the 1967 Six-Day War when Egypt, Syria and Jordan fought Israel.

The Palestinians were in no position to confront the Israeli army, because those whose lands were not already occupied by Israel were living under oppressive Egyptian control in Gaza and tough Jordanian rule in the West Bank. After the speedy Israeli victory, which demolished the myth of the new state’s vulnerability, the Palestinians became imprisoned as a people by Israel for crimes they had not committed.

Even if we accept the harshest portrayal of the tactics and motives of the Palestinian movements against Israel after the Six-Day War, at what point did that terrorism represent a serious challenge to the survival of the Jewish people or the state that claims to speak in their name? Yet that survival is invoked to justify the vastly excessive use of force by the Israeli war machine, with frequent allusions to the Holocaust previously visited upon the Jewish people, a holocaust that had nothing to do with Palestinians or Muslims, and everything to do with Central Europeans claiming to be Christians.

The high moral claim of the Israeli occupation rests not on the objective reality of a Palestinian threat to Israel’s survival, but rather on the non sequitur cry that "never again" should harm come to Jews as it did in Central Europe seven decades ago.

The basic argument is that Palestinian terrorists represented by Hamas are given to an irrational hatred of Jews so profound that it invalidates their movement, even when they win elections. That was not the view of the Israeli security service when it earlier supported Hamas as the alternative to the then dreaded PLO. Also, history is replete with examples of terrorists becoming statesmen, even within the early ranks of Jews fighting to establish the state of Israel.

One of those was Menachem Begin, who went on to be an elected leader of the new state. But before Begin attained that respectability, back in 1948 when he visited the United States, a group of prominent Jewish intellectuals including Albert Einstein, Sidney Hook and Hannah Arendt wrote a letter to the New York Times warning that Begin was a former leader of the "Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine." The letter urged Jews to shun Begin, arguing, "It is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world, if correctly informed as to Mr. Begin’s political record and perspectives, could add their names and support to the movement he represents."

Begin’s new party was then participating in the Israeli election, and Einstein and his colleagues, many of whom like the physicist had been victims of German fascism, stated, "Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character."

Those actions were then detailed in the letter. They included the systematic terrorizing of innocent Palestinian men, women and children in an effort to force them to flee the territory that Begin’s party claimed for the new state of Israel.

Clearly Begin and his political heirs, who include Benjamin Netanyahu, the most likely victor in the next Israeli election, evolved in their behavior. But I bring it up now to highlight the one-sided reporting of the current phase of this interminable conflict and to wonder: Where are the voices that reflect the uncompromising morality of Einstein’s generation of Jewish intellectuals willing to acknowledge fault and humanity on both sides of the political equation?

the Palestinians wouldn't be shafted already. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Europe, and the US are conspiring with the Israeli zionists against the Palestinians. If the US and Europe were giving the same no strings attached support to India that they have been giving to Israel for the past 40 years, Pakistan would be in the same status as Palestine.

The only way Gaza can recover is when GLOBAL PEAK OIL hits and the sooner the better !

How convenient the timing is? Some of the more paranoid of us have been speculating as to whether Bush would declare martial law, invoke war powers, or find some other way to stay in office.

And here we are, a little over two weeks to go - and viola! big trouble in the middle east. If he's lucky, it will spread and the entire region will go up in flames.

nahhhh, couldn't be, go back to sleep.

Whenever anyone tries to criticize Israel they are automatically called prejudiced.
It's the same when anyone criticizes Obama, they are automatically called racist.
It's a great irony that minorities are now able to use their oppressed history in their own favor.
However in so doing they are repeating the same mistakes the majority makes.....passing on discrimination to a different minority.
An example being what the black community in California did to gays/lesbians (voting in favor of taking away their civil rights).

It is like the Big Kid and the Strange Kid in second grade all over

Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
they do not like each other.

Strange kid keeps throwing rocks at big kid. Strange kid mistakenly believes he can get the big kid in trouble and win.

Big kid keeps saying if you don't stop I am going to kick you into tomorrow.

Finally Big Kid lets strange kid have it.

Everyone else sits and watches with silent amusement.

Battered strange kid cries and screams but everyone kinds yawns and says Big Kid asked him to stop, told him what would happen.

Teachers figure strange kid will figure it out sometime.

Strange kid vows to get bigger rocks next time. Other kids plot to supply Strange kid with the bigger rocks, for their amusement. We know how that will turn out already.

Yep, just like second grade playground.

I find it odd that this military operation would have this "Cast Lead" title.

There are reports that "Casting Lead" comes from the spinning top dreidel toys jewish kids play with.

What kind of sick mind would come up with this name for a military operation?

Any there any clues why THEY named it thus?

What is "casting lead" all about?

Why name it this?

POLL

Considering where support for Israel has been historically, I think this is a significant shift. It makes it all that much more important that anti-war activists register their dissent by calling their reps 202-224-3121 and writing to the incoming Obama administration which has very deliberately not taken any public stance.

Columnist Feigns Ignorance

When did terrorism threaten Israel as a state?

How about when parents won't let their kids out on saturday night because Fatah is blowing up busses? Or how about when people can't go about their lives because rocket sirens go off every 15 minutes. What other function does a state offer besides allowing people to go about their lives without fear of being blown up?

Israel is supposed to somehow accept Hamas' aggression because they aren't marching on Tel-Aviv? Don't play stupid.

And enough about "who will speak for Gaza" or all that crap. Plenty of people are. Stop pretending to be censored.

Gaza is perma-fucked

Gazans are between the proverbial rock and a hard place.

Egypt, Jordan and all other Arab nations are implacable in their belief the Palestinian problem belongs to Israel. Palestinians are allowed to rot since it would be destabling to allow a population of certifiably unsane prople to emigrate and settle anywhere but where they're living.

Israel has an historic right to be a Jewish state. During its formation Arab other states terrorized Palestinian populations into fleeing, creating the refugee camps that are still in existence. It is ever to be the shame of the Arab world, leaving those unfortunate people to fester ... forever?

Choosing Hamas may have been a pragmatic move by Gazans, but it was also a throw of the dice and it seems they have crapped out.

Bottom line is Gazans must choose peace over hate, it's the only solution. don't know how they're gonna do that, though.

but they should

Many People Will Speak Up But Not the Powerful

I really can't get behind Hamas, but the people of Gaza deserve a lot more help and a lot more opportunity.

The divided territories which have been grudgingly provided for the Palestinians are untenable. Where else in the world is a people's territory violated with impunity so often? What kind of an economy can really be developed in these territories?

Israel has become a far different state than the one that was created 6 decades ago. As the increasingly hard-line governments' attitudes of superiority over the Palestinians have grown, so have their disregard for the rights and well-being of the Palestinian people.

Despite my genuine concern for the human rights of Jews everywhere, I have come to believe that some arm-twisting is required to change Israel's behavior. I have no doubt that Israel could make great progress toward peace and prosperity if it devoted its economic and intellectual resources to a realistic and mutually-beneficial arrangement with the Palestinians. It is time for them to show the character and leadership that befits a truly powerful nation in the Middle East.

Whether the new Obama Administration will be able to bring about the necessary changes remains to be seen. My latest thinking is that an Israeli version of Anwar Sadat is needed to change the conversation and the course of history in the Middle East.

Kucinich is filing a complaint based on the Arms Export Control Act
Posted by: fanny666 on Jan 7, 2009 5:10 PM

The Arms Export Control Act of 1976 makes it illegal for the US to sell or donate weapons if it would "increase the possibility of outbreak or escalation of conflict".

Of course, Israel exclusively uses US built and donated jets in its bombing runs. Based on this, Dennis Kucinich has filed a complaint with the Secretary of State demanding that the federal government enforce this law.

Palestinians prosper in the US.
Why not in the Gaza Strip? Because it is a dysfunctional, nihilistic society with absolutely nothing going in its favor. They do not have a pot to piss in, yet they sit around in their miserable poverty. They refuse to accept Israel's existence and learn to use it to their advantage.
Their "jihad" strategy, their stubbornness, and their denial of reality is a complete, total, and perpetual losing gameplan.

I swore I'd never use the word "nay".

It's difficult, nay, damn near cunting impossible to roll back 60+ years of 24/7/365 propaganda but check this out:

Maybe if we gave Palestine back to the Palestinians they'd be happy and shut the fuck up. Give the Jews, I dunno, North Dakota or part of Texas. Better yet, give them nothing at all. The killing of the Jews by the Germans wasn't the first time something like that has happened and it probably won't be the last. Maybe it's time for them to quit whining and fucking get over it.

David Ben-Gurion explanation

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Check this out:

"David Ben-Gurion told Nahum Goldman before he died:

"I don't understand your optimism.," Ben-Gurion declared. "Why should the Arabs make peace? If I was an Arab leader I would never make terms with Israel. That is natural: we have taken their country. Sure, God promised it to us, but what does that matter to them? Our God is not theirs. We come from Israel, it's true, but two thousand years ago, and what is that to them? There has been anti-Semitism the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They only see one thing: we have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that? They may perhaps forget in one or two generations' time, but for the moment there is no chance. So it's simple: we have to stay strong and maintain a powerful army. Our whole policy is there. Otherwise the Arabs will wipes us out".

"But how can you sleep with that prospect in mind," I broke in, "and be Prime Minister of Israel too?"

Who says I sleep? he answered simply. (The Jewish Paradox by Nahum Goldman, p. 99)"

The real blame.

I think the best defense on behalf of the Palestinian would come from the literature of early zionists themselves; like ( Herzl, Ben Gurion, Moshe Sharett, Ze'ev Jabotinsky, Chaim Weizmann, Yosef Weitz, and many others, and without the need to read the Palestinian "propaganda".For example "The Arab problem" and their solution so called "Population transfer" would show how they saw the local population and their raciest ideology. Reading what they said would clear a lot of questions and issues we are seeing today, on the other hand these freaks would stay in closed dark social clubs talking about their sick ideas if they were not received the "love" from England and then US. Then a big part of the solution lay on these big powers to come forward and take their responsibilities first by acknowledging their roles and then fix the mess they created, but when? Maybe in couple hundred years..

International Neturei Karta Orthodox Rabbis For A Single State Solution
Posted by: jayjanson on Jan 9, 2009 3:39 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Regarding the many gentle anti-Zionist Rabbis purposefully ignored in conglomerate owned media.

Neturei Karta rabbis sound so straight-forwardly honest, clear and humanist by comparison with all the twisting and turning by apologists for a Zionist murderous brutality that has a history that predates the unfair partition forced upon the entire colonial population of Palestine by the colonial powers.

A history, blacked out currently in conglomerate media, that can be read, however, in the Encyclopedia Britannica and Noam Chomsky's "The Fateful Triangle" And Neturei Karta has steadfastly continued the warning against partition of Albert Einstein, Martin Buber, Erich Fromm and so many Jewish intellectuals of yesteryear and today.

From the Neturei Karta web site: http://www.nkusa.org/

"The true Jews are against dispossessing the Arabs of their land and homes. According to the Torah, the land should be returned to them."

"The world must know that the Zionists have illegitimately seized the name Israel and have no right to speak in the name of the Jewish people!"

Neturei Karta statement, "Zionist Massacre in Gaza, January 2008"

'We implore you to convey the message to the people in Gaza and
Palestine, that there are untold thousands of Jews worldwide and in
Palestine who stand with you and who entirely oppose Zionism and the state of "Israel" and bear no responsibility for the actions of the
Zionists. ... May we merit to see soon in our days, the total, speedy and peaceful dismantlement of the state of "Israel".

Assalam Alaikum
Very truly yours,
Rabbi Moshe Dov Beck, Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss, USA, Canada
Rabbi Meir Hirsh, Palestine
Rabbi Ahron Cohen, United Kingdom

Americans are unaware of orthodox rabbis against the existence of the present state of Israel?

Their idea is Jews could have their homeland in a single Palestine state - could bless it with their wealth, influence and expertise without having to kill or take anyone's land.

Though nearly everyone, even dissidents, regard Neturei Karta's one-state solution as impossible, candid observation reveals no plan for a fair and viable two state solution from the Israel government. At least Neturei Karta is truthfully visionary.

That the strong shall show their strength by protecting the weak.

Neturei Karta cautions, "Don't think you are helping Jews by supporting the state of Israel."

Israel's prowess in progress has the aspect of a continuing sequel to, or at least an aftermath of, or some kind of aberrantly permissible constant payback for, the European Holocaust, but in a land holy to three religions and the ancient history of many peoples, not just one, thousands of miles in distance and nearing to a century in time from Nazi Germany?

None of these dead children of the Seventh Day Hanukkah campaign was destined to ever be a grown man or woman. Rather, the impersonal destiny of each child was to be a tiny percentage of the pre-calculated and acceptable minimum loss of human life in an appropriate retaliatory response in which no individual was c onsidered to have any human rights at all.

In an appropriate retaliatory response, each child's death becomes appropriate.

If super power Israel is not strong enough to respect individual human right to life, what shall we expect from those who are so much weaker?

The people of Gaza and the rest of Palestine have no chance of making peace with Israel. Israel wants their land. Native Americans tried to make peace with the Europeans that came over to take their land and died as treaty after treaty was broken. When they tried to fight back they became 'savages' (terrorists?) Israel will never let them alone. We should stop supporting Israel and force them to make one country for Jews and Palestinians; they lived together for thousands of years and can again.
