America's New Year Resolution: Stop Being Stupid
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest headlines via email.
I’ve got a new year’s resolution and a new slogan for the country.
The resolution may be difficult, but it’s essential. Americans must resolve to be smarter going forward than we have been for the past several years.
Look around you. We have behaved in ways that were incredibly, astonishingly and embarrassingly stupid for much too long. We’ve wrecked the economy and mortgaged the future of generations yet unborn. We don’t even know if we’ll have an automobile industry in the coming years. It’s time to stop the self-destruction.
The slogan? “Invest in the U.S.” By that I mean we should stop squandering the nation’s wealth on unnecessary warfare overseas and mindless consumption here at home and start making sensible investments in the well-being of the American people and the long-term health of the economy.
The mind-boggling stupidity that we’ve indulged in was hammered home by a comment almost casually delivered by, of all people, Bernie Madoff, the mild-mannered creator of what appears to have been a nuclear-powered Ponzi scheme. Madoff summed up his activities with devastating simplicity. He is said to have told the F.B.I. that he “paid investors with money that wasn’t there.”
Somehow, over the past few decades, that has become the American way: to pay for things -- from wars to Wall Street bonuses to flat-screen TVs to video games -- with money that wasn’t there.
Something for nothing became the order of the day. You want to invade Iraq? Convince yourself that oil revenues out of Baghdad will pay for it. (Meanwhile, carve out another deficit channel in the federal budget.) You want to pump up profits in the financial sector? End the oversight and let the lunatics in the asylum run wild.
For those who wanted a bigger house in a nicer neighborhood, there were mortgages with absurdly easy terms. Credit-card offers came in the mail like confetti, and we used them like there was no tomorrow. For students stunned by the skyrocketing cost of tuition, there were college loans that could last a lifetime.
Money that wasn’t there.
Plenty of people managed their credit wisely. But much of the country, including many of the top government officials and financial titans who were supposed to be guarding the nation’s wealth, acted as if there would never be a day of reckoning, a day when -- inevitably -- the soaring markets would crash and the bubbles explode.
We were stupid in so many ways. We shipped American jobs overseas by the millions and came up with the fiction that this was a good deal for just about everybody. We could have and should have taken the time and made the effort to think globalization through, to be smarter about it and craft ways to cushion its more harmful effects and to share its benefits more equitably.
We bought into the dopey idea that you could radically cut taxes and still maintain critical government services -- and fight two wars to boot!
We were living in a dream world. The general public, and to a great extent the press, closed its eyes to the increasingly complex and baffling machinations of the financial industry, which kept screaming that oversight would ruin everything.
We should have known better. It didn’t require a genius (or even an economics degree) to understand a crucial point that popped up some years ago in a front-page article in The Wall Street Journal: “Markets are a great way to organize economic activity, but they need adult supervision.”
Did Alan Greenspan not understand that? Bob Rubin? Larry Summers?
Now that the reality of a stunning economic downturn has so roughly intervened, we at least have the option of being smarter going forward. There is broad agreement that we have no choice but to go much more deeply into debt to jump-start the economy. But we have tremendous choices as to how we use that debt.
We should use it to invest in the U.S. -- in a world-class infrastructure (in its broadest sense) to serve as the platform for a world-class, 21st-century economy, and in a system of education that actually prepares American youngsters to deal successfully with the real world they will be encountering.
We need to invest in a health care system that improves the quality of American lives, enhances productivity, puts large numbers of additional people to work and eases the competitive burden of U.S. corporations.
We need to care for our environment (if long-term survival means anything to us) and get serious about weaning ourselves from foreign oil.
And, finally, we need to start living within our means and get past the nauseating idea that the essence of our culture and the be-all and end-all of the American economy is the limitless consumption of trashy consumer goods.
It’s time to stop being stupid.

Unfortunately, we have recently discovered that our form of peaceful protests and proper paper work filing doesn't do anything; it's just wasted time. If our government decides to hand out billions of dollars of our money to their wealthy friends without even bothering to promise us anything in return, they can simply do it. As long as we play by our own rules, we citizens are completely at the mercy of our leaders. We need to take our power back and put fear into our leaders. They are supposed to be there for us, OUR employees. We need to have the power to fire whomever, whenever we want. We need to have the power to imprison leaders who break laws.

And if that ain't bad enough, most people are even STUPIDER when it comes to prioritizing presidential elections and select races in Congress simply because of whoopdeedoo shit polls over all others. Local and state level governments affect you even more than national government. As a matter of fact, by neglecting state and local races, you allow the religions, corporate, and military monied elites to fuck you whereas if you had paid attention to all levels, those monied elites would have been clearly put on the defensive and you'd have a better say. If you all don't want shitpots in Washington, keep fighting for better pols on local and state levels. Then you'll get a Washington that does not give you the middle finger.

I mean, look at the State Lottery--especially when the proceeds go to education. Talk about irony: the lottery is a State sanctioned tax on people who can't do math. Casino's are no better, except they actually create jobs, employ people, and contribute to the State coffers. And yes, I like the roads that Casino's help build, as opposed to the lazy self-serving bastards in government.
Look at the tobacco tax, where, in my state, it's partially used to pay the cost of medical care for paupers and also subsidize education. Get that? We rely on people to continue smoking to treat the indigent and educate their kids. It's a State habit!
But stupid doesn't just fund State activities and gambling enterprises. It enables folks in the car industry to make money--a (f)lease is the first thing any savvy salesman will try to sell you when you walk into a new car dealership. They'll gradually move into high interest rate realms, and gradually lower it until the stupid are locked into their "dream car" their car with interest over a five-to-seven year term. If it sounds like a prison sentence, then duh (tm)(r), lol.
Credit cards? Consumer loans? Designer/organic foods? The "next best" thing in electronics? Cashing out equity in your home to put "my plama tv, dog" in your living room...the one the bank now owns? Carbon credits?
Stupid is a vital engine in our economy. How dare you jeopardize the livelihood of so many Americans by pointing out obvious sh_t to our dumb, paying customers! If they wise up and stop buying, we won't be paying as much in taxes, and how in the hell to you propose to build roads and fund medicaid then, genius?
Print more money? Oh yeah...we're doing that already. HA!

So, we have to get to our computers or desks or phones and let them know that, but loud! We do have power. We must learn how to use it. The Bush crime family sent the message that (they (he) were the deciders) Well, that is not true. If we make our wishes known, they have to obey or they are out on their fat behinds!
I will never understand why the people have not risen up and demanded that Bush and his whole gang of thieves and murderers be thrown out - impeached! I know that a great number of us have been vocal but I guess we will have to wait until this bunch is out of office to indict and prosecute and jail. But that had better happen or there wil be a mass exodus out of this country. I would be long gone if I weren't 74 years old.
The fact that the Democratic Party refused the podium to Jimmy Carter at the convention has made me rethink my party affiliation. The fact that he, almost exclusively, tells the truth, made him unattractive to them. That sickened me and maybe from now on I will be an Independant voter.
But the movement for a not for profit health care plan is snowballing and it willl probably happen in the next year or so. That will happen only if we all keep up the pressure on our legislators. So, in every letter to your representatives please demand that they pass this and pass it now! This act alone will have a great and positive effect on the economy by releasing businesses and schools and all employers from having to provide health "insurance" (Hiss).
Another little message to our representatives about that is the fact that they have always had great health care plans. What makes them think that they are any more worthy of that than any of us? Aren't we all supposed to be "created equal"? Of course there have always been people who are more equal than others. Nice!
So, we have our work cut out for us. If we all spend an hour a day at the computer or writing letters making sure that we make our wishes and demands clear to the bozos in Washington, there will be a response. We have to use France as an example in this case. There the government is afraid of the people as opposed to here where the people are afraid of the government. Certainly the people there couldn't be any brighter than we are, right?

I did not vote for nor support the Iraq War. It seems to me the focus should be on those responsible for the mess America finds itself in. George W Bush, Alberto Gonzales, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Karl Rove, Alan Greenspan, Henry Paulson, Ben Bernanke, Phil Gramm and others. Americans are suffering because of the greed and mismanagement of our nations economy and tax payers' money. Americans should never forget who is directly responsible.

We have been asked to become involved in our own governance and in our communities. This will require not only giving up being stupid in our choices, but also becoming better educated in our options.
We are not stuck in any place in history, we are now able to make history. We can exercise our options to move forward to address problems like global warming, oil depletion and energy independence, American job creation, and social issues, like education, health care, Social Security. WE ARE THE ONES WHO CAN DO THIS!!!
We are no longer going to allow ourselves to become so complacent that we allow our children to fall behind the rest of the world in innovation, knowledge, and determination. We will push our children to once again think.
Are you noticing the pattern here? It is all about US, WE, the collective plural. It is not about one man or one group of men and women that we elected. It is all about how WE act that will overcome the stupidity. It will be all about how we never again allow ourselves to become so blinded by greed and apathy that we allow others to determine how we will survive. IT WILL BE ALL ABOUT US AND HOW WE CHANGE THAT WILL BE THE END RESULT OF THIS RESOLUTION: WE WILL STOP BEING STUPID!

The ruling elite have not changed. Mr. Obama is using the services of the same people from the ruling elite who got this world into the economic disaster-Mr. Rubin and Mr. Summers-to use your examples.
And don’t say “invest.” Money needs to be “spent.” And the money should come from taxes, very progressive taxes on the rich and very rich. These are the people who gained unjustly at the expense of most everyone else. Now they should pay for the mess they made and pay for the clean up.

As for the US government stop with the wars, coup-detat, proxy wars, false flags, support of terrorism, war on drugs, war on poverty, war on men, war on third world, support of tyrants, and sponsoring of US "democracy" abroad.
Same goes for the EU.
The current financial crises does not destroy real wealth just moves it around into corrupt hands. Think of it as a wealth grab.
The article mentions sustainability and yet does not actually discuss the economy, which is not uncommon for BS articles. Tell me how an economy can be sustainable when it relies on debt for growth? Should it ever stop, the economy collapses. The economy is sustained by mass ignorance and greed. The only way I see it would stop is either through war or when the whole world is consumed by one giant fugly corporation.
BTW: Stop blaming Bush, the guy is an idiot. He is merely a scapegoat and the issue is more than just Bush and the Republicans.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -AP- U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett says he is donating his new congressional raise to an Anderson charity.
Barrett says he will donate the $4,700 salary increase that begins in 2009 to Anderson Interfaith Ministries - an organization of churches and individuals who provide assistance to the needy and helps them become self-sufficient.
Barrett says lawmakers should not be earning more during these poor economic times. He says he voted against the automatic pay raise and all increases should have to be voted on individually.
Barrett is beginning his fourth term in Congress. The Republican's district runs along the Savannah River in the northwestern corner of South Carolina.

I, as many others here on Alternet, have been opposed to the Bush administration, all their Neocon predecessors, and all their 'steal from the poor, give to the rich' policies for the last thirty years.
So don't include me in your sweeping generalizations of ignorance and stupidity.
