Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a scandal-plagued Democrat who, among other things, was preparing to appoint a senatorial successor to President-elect Barack Obama, was arrested Tuesday by FBI agents on what can only be described as breathtaking charges of corruption.

Needless to say, this is more than just another bust of another allegedly crooked governor of a state that has sent a good many of chief executives to prison -- including Blagojevich's predecessor, Republican George Ryan.

What are the ramifications?

First off, Obama is going to face questions about Blagojevich, a fellow Chicago pol with whom the president-elect served in the Illinois statehouse during from 2003 to 2005, when Blagojevich was governor and Obama was a state senator. The president-elect is not saying much beyond a standard "it's a sad day for Illinois" lamentation.

Obama would appear to be on pretty solid ground, as he was never particularly close to the governor. But the right-wing echo chamber will go wild about the fact that the two were in the same room with one another dozens of times and knew hundreds, perhaps thousands, of the same people -- including unsavory characters such as Chicago fixer Tony Rezko.

Intriguingly, one of the charges against Blagojevich is that he demanded appointment for himself as secretary of health and human services in the Obama administration -- apparently in return for appointing a senator who would be to the president-elect's liking. That raises the prospect that either Obama or members of his transition team may have cooperated into the federal investigation of the governor's activities. Certainly, Obama fans will hope this turns out to have been the case.

What is clear from the transcripts of tapes contained in the 76-page indictment is that Blagojevich was not satisfied with the response from the Obama team. The governor was overheard saying of the transition team, "they're not willing to give me anything except appreciation. F**k them."

At another point, the Blagojevich used the same epithet with regard to Obama.

It appears that the governor sought various and sundry benefits for himself, his wife and his campaign in return for Obama's seat. Blagojevich is quoted as saying that a Senate seat "is a f**king valuable thing, you just don't give it away for nothing."

Reflecting on the governor's actions and statements, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald declared, "The breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering. They allege that Blagojevich put a 'for sale' sign on the naming of a United States senator..."

One of the allegations is that the governor offered to appoint a favorite of organized labor in return for a top-level union job. And it just gets uglier.

Fitzgerald says, "(Blagojevich) involved himself personally in pay-to-play schemes with the urgency of a salesman meeting his annual sales target; and corruptly used his office in an effort to trample editorial voices of criticism."

A corrupt Governor is being brought down, his Lt. Governor is in no way implicated and will be the one to appoint the new Senator to fill President-Elect Obama's Senate seat.
Of course there are those who will try to somehow implicate Obama because as the article says, they were at times in the same room. But the ranters will always rant and there is absolutely no shred of evidence that Obama was anywhere near this or knew anything at all about it, so good riddance to one more corrupt politician.

This is all coming out now because the Repubs are trying to destory Obama....

Such dim wits they are.

You can make two lists, one with all the Repub/Conservs who are fools in one list and the other with foolish Dems...and by far, the Repub/Conser party, through out its history, has a list compiled of more murder, war, recession, oppression, adultery, etc.

It is the Repub/Conserv ideology, not the people themselves.

They can't help that they are like fundamentalist Christians who follow an invisible friend, and no matter what they do, like Bush sending us to "war", in their minds, they are never wrong.

Sickness, that is what is it, a real mental illness...close to what a Sociopath is.

They should all be locked up in Gitmo.

Being a MI'er I feel for my IL friends, Jus what we needed ah ...Delusions of Granduer, either 'Gangbanger' or 'Russian Mafiaso'.
But these types are easy to detect since their Over inflated Egos encourage them to flaunt their Ciminality.
What Ails Our states more are those who have been playing footsies with the Corps while gutting our States of Jobs.
Yes both Rob & Kwame deserve to pay for their Abuses of Power, but there are other who should be facing charges for complicity with Corp agendas.
I don't know about my friends in IL, But I would like Hearing in which law makers answer some questions about How THEY caused the downward spiral of the 'Rust belt'.
I had to laugh (and Cheer) when GettleFinger basically pointed a finger back at the panels for the legislation which has allowed the slow death of the Big 3...Weren't they supposed to looking out for OUR best interests, esp in an industry which so many american rely on.
so yes, Rod had dreams of being a Russian Mob don, Kwame strutted around with his Possee. but what 'Public Servants' over the last 3 decades have embezzled, Extorted and swindled the citizens of the Midwest region out of Jobs, thus sucking the life blood from our region and our people. These are the Criminals I am most interested in prosecuting, Not so much these self proclaimed 'teflon dons'. both were Too stupid (and New) to have caused the same devastation as those who've been hanging our in the halls of congress with their hands out to evey CEO that walked by.
these Crimes are 'sensational', but not substantial- One Senator, like a few Sex calls, Will not bring down the Nation...but selling your Office to help corps improve their profit margins at the cost of the American Worker is.Just like the Mafia, it's not the Boisterous or the flamboyant which rule to Organization, it's the quite, Unassuming old men who mastermind the big Crimes. And the 'Rust Belt' states have been Victims of these 'nice old men'

You're right with your assessment of politicians, but for those who believe in the concept of hope then that's a pretty low bar. What they do is far from harmless. This buying and selling of the political process means that we need another country to invade and liberate us and bring us true democracy. But there is an option to that secenario. Only problem is, since we are all so differently wired and diverse and egotistic, that option is off the table. By the way, hope is for dopes.

While I think Blago was a dumbass on this one, I find it amazing that when corporate, religious, and military interests are rarely held accountable for buying them seats for millions, if not billions of dollars with their favorite puppets to put in place. Both parties deserve to go down and have us blind idiots in the electorate wake up and start with new parties and leadership for a change. And while at it, you people need to pay more attention to your local and state level elections or this is the kind of shit you all will end up with.

Reading through the full complaint, I was struck by the number of misdeeds which took place long before Nov. 4th. Blow-Dry-A-Vitch is shown to be a self-serving twerp who has been running a corrupt office for years. The attempt to sell the Senate seat forced Fitzgerald to rush ahead so that the governor wouldn't be in a position to name the replacement. So naturally that's what is being echoed by everyone. What we all need to remember is the Blagojevich has been under investigation for several years and that the attempt to profit from the opportunity to appoint a Senator brought him down ahead of schedule.

Semms very strage that the FIRST person Obama went to see the day after the election was the dirty GOV. Why the urgency?

Here's the artice:

Ill. governor meeting with Obama today

By Carol Sowers
Wednesday, November 05, 2008 at 10:39 a.m.

CHICAGO, ILL. -- Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

That's one of Obama's first priorities today.

He's meeting with Governor Rod Blagojevich this afternoon in Chicago to discuss it.

Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement.

There's already been speculation about his selection...from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. of Chicago's south side who co-chaired Obama's presidential campaign, to recently-retired state senate president Emil Jones, to the governor himself.

It's likely the governor will make his decision quickly so the new senator will get some seniority before newly-elected senators take office in January.

Part of the timing depends on when Obama officially vacates his senate seat.

KHQA's Alexis Hunt is speaking with Illinois Senator John Sullivan today about his thoughts on that replacement process, his time working with Obama in the state senate, and if there's a chance Sullivan might play a role in the Obama administration. Watch KHQA News at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. tonight to hear what he has to say.

Remember this fact: the roots on a scandal run deeper than a dandelion's roots; and no one really knows how deep the roots are. And for anyone who has to pull them up, there will be a large dirt clog coming up.
Congratulations to Blagojevich. There is dirt in Springfield. And Blagojevich's footprints are everywhere.

This is the exact way I connected the dots, because this man (BLAGO) has been under federal investigation (phone tapping) for THREE YEARS. Everybody knew what the deal was on this man, especially those politican in ILL. He crossed the wrong bridge, stepped over the line when he wanted key players fired at the Chicago TRIB newspaper...

He and OBAMA weren't close. It is painfully obvious from the tapes that he did not like OBAMA, nor did he appreciate only receiving appreciation. OBAMA does not walk on water, but to paint him in on this mess is wrong. Let's let the man get into office, and try to fix this nation, a nation that has been torn and worn to fragments by George Dubua and his administration and brought to the point of world wide economic destruction and despair. Those thug neocons boys are the ones folks should be demanding get investigated. This guy is chicken feed compared to the Bush Administration.... and everybody above ground should be "rolling" behind the damage they have done...

Maybe blago IS a crook. It just seems the TIMING of this is just a little suspicious and an attempt by the rethugs to force an election with the hope of slamming a rethug down the throats of Illinois and our county. This all smells strongly of a Turdblossom operation.

I am an employee of the state of Illinois and can tell you that ever since January 20, 2002, the day Blago took office, our state has been headed straight to hell. He has appointed the most incompetent, obnoxious cronies to head our agencies and they have pushed out dedicated public servants with their never-ending abuse and harassment. I cannot tell you how we have suffered!

I can't wait until he and all of them are rotting away behind bars. Yesterday was a day of celebration for all state employees - we were practically dancing in the streets of Springfield.

I mean the guy just got done raising a record sum of money for a presidential campaign that he won. I'm sure the right will try to throw this in his face as long as he is in office, but I would be shocked if they can ever come up with any evidence linking him to any of this.

Blago and his wife just look plain greedy here and they got caught.

Just another chapter in the history of corruption in Illinois.

If Blago gets convicted, maybe he can share a prison cell with his predecessor George Ryan. There is something about politics in Illinois.

Politics can get pretty ugly and downright dirty, especially in the state of Illinois. Wrong deeds will definitely catch up to you sooner or later. President-elect Barack Obama arrested Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, along with his chief of staff John Harris, in Chicago Tuesday morning on charges that included conspiring to commit wire fraud and soliciting bribes in exchange for the state’s Senate seat, vacated. This is the second time an Illinois governor has been arrested on federal charges. George Ryan, Illinois’ 39th governor, was also charged for wielding his authority to help himself and his friends. This seems that Blagojevich didn’t learn the lesson on having illegal moves would probably cause him into a big trouble. According to the Illinois state law, it is the responsibility of the governor to fill the senate seat and much like Ryan; Governor Blagojevich saw an opportunity to use his power to leverage amenities for himself. According to the news, Blagojevich, 52, was hoping to get a substantially higher salary, a position on the board for his wife, a cabinet post and more in exchange for his choice of a senate replacement. Looks like the governor got a little bit too greedy. The FBI has filed a 76-page indictment against both Blagojevich and Harris. The affidavit reports that the federal authorities caught Blagojevich conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat on court-ordered wiretaps last month. The people of Illinois will have to wait patiently for the conclusion of this story. Times are rough and it’s about to get rougher, especially for both Blagojevich and his cohort John Harris.
