Since Rahm Emanuel was appointed the next White House chief of staff last month, ProPublica has been retracing his previous life as an investment banker, which earned him more than $18 million in less than three years.

The New York Times recently shed new light on Emanuel's Wall Street days -- and how they helped send him to Congress.

In late 1998, Emanuel left the Clinton White House to work for Wasserstein Perella, a now defunct investment bank run by Bruce Wasserstein, a major Democratic donor.

"I had this idea that this could work and that it had upside," Wasserstein told the Times. "It worked out better than I could have hoped."

Indeed, as we previously noted, Emanuel used his political connections to broker major deals while at the firm. (One deal was a $16 billion merger that created Exelon Corp., now one of the nation's largest electric utilities. Another involved SBC Communications, the telecommunications company run by William Daley, Clinton's commerce secretary and the brother of Chicago's mayor.)

After leaving the bank in 2001 to run for Congress, Emanuel benefited from the sale of Wasserstein Perella, which gave him an unusually large payout. Russ Gerson, global head of financial markets for A.T. Kearney Executive Search, told the Chicago Tribune in 2003 that Emanuel's compensation would put him "in the top 3 to 5 percent" of investment bankers at that time.

The cash proved helpful when Emanuel found himself in a tough fight for a seat in Congress. He contributed $450,000 out of his own pocket to the primary campaign, and his leading rival accused him of trying to buy his seat, the Times reports.

The financial industry also heavily financed Emanuel's campaign. From the Times:

After Emanuel left banking to run for Congress, members of the securities and investment industry became his biggest backers, donating more than $1.5 million to his campaigns dating back to 2002, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Mr. Emanuel also leaned heavily upon the industry while he was chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee during the 2006 midterm elections. Financial industry donors contributed more than $5.8 million to the committee, behind only retirees.

Once he reached Congress, Emanuel served on the Financial Services Committee, which handles legislation involving financial markets and banks.

Neither the Times nor anybody else has suggested Emanuel went on to do the bidding of the financial industry. But there's little question his days as a banker have helped shape Emanuel's perspective. From the Times:

Former colleagues said the insight it afforded him on the financial services sector is invaluable especially now. But Mr. Emanuel built up strong ties with an industry now at the heart of the economic crisis, one that will be girding for a pitched lobbying battle next year as the incoming Democratic administration considers a potentially sweeping regulatory overhaul.

Friends of Mr. Emanuel's from his private-sector days said he still checks in with them regularly to plumb their insights on economic issues.

In an interview with the Times, Emanuel said he often acted against the wishes of the financial industry. "I would say I've been as tough on my friends as others," he said. "I call it like I see it."

This Rahm Emanuel character is a real corporatist, he was a staunch supporter of the war in Iraq, and he has expressed hawkish pro-Israel views!

Emanuel seems more like a Bush/Cheney pick for White House chief-of-staff!

What the hell is going on here???

We all know that the US multinationals control the govt. Whether it's Amazonia, or the Mid-East, or Africa, we are there warring. WAR brings big bucks, it's the largest industry in the world. Let's all unite against war in any manner.Let the warmongers kill each other not our youth. Can you imagine PEACE? Calm and tranquility are becoming high priced commodities. Hopefully we are getting to the end of an era for the entire planet, and the beginning of a new one. Maybe we will take stock and realize that what we are doing does not work for everyone and we'll design something that does. Until then, Rahm Emanuel could hold his breath!

Obama-On Same Team as Bush
Posted by: 911FalseFlag on Dec 9, 2008 6:12 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Since the election, I have posted a good number of articles about Obama on my website which is www.911insidejob.net about whether he will really make a difference in this country's foreign policy. I really think he was groomed by the "powers that be" to become president and to further their agenda. On the surface, he is such a welcome change from George Bush and Dick Cheney that people around the world are looking to him as being a savior. But there is no way that Obama came from first being elected to the United States Senate in 2004 and four years later being elected president without the strong support and help of the "powers that be" including of course the mainstream media. To come so far so quickly seems to indicate clearly that he is beholding to the power elite in this country.
I am a member of the Coalition against Election Fraud established right after the 2004 election in Massachusetts. About 15 of us met with about 15 different United States senators on January 5, 2005 In Washington DC. The purpose was to present them with election fraud evidence so that they would not certify the electoral College vote in Ohio.
Here is my experience with Obama's office when we knocked on their door in the United States Senate building asking to be heard about this very important issue. They would not even let us in the door. Electronic voting machine fraud was not even talked about by him during the election.
I do not think he will make much of the difference since he is already obliged to the power elites

Maybe it's my blue collar head bashing Union Upbringing (LOL, that played itself out in the '80's...Unions are not what they used to be),but don't we need an insider to help locate the bodies?
am I thrilled he worked the Wall Street Scam, NO. But I am interested in the fact he Knows the terrain.Besides the Fact he was smart enough to gett out before the shit hit the fan..he has some foresight, we'll need it.
I'm also liking the 'strongarm' persona so many on both sides of the aisle attest too. If he scares Hillary, thats a testimonial to he's tenaciousness and fortitude.
Have you noticed that the Dems are equating the Wall Street Bail Out and the Big 3 loan. Have you noticed they consistently repeat that ALL aspects of the industry must sacrific, Not just the UAW ..AGAIN!
If Rahm is pulling levers is this a signal to those savvy on the right..Start participating or we will Move the Working class to seek Retribution for the Economic Treason you have committed? Dare throw at least 3 million workers out of a job. If you want to se the ripple effect of Factories closing Come to Flint MI. the reprecussion are devasting, to local business, neighborhoods, schools, hospitals...and where will all those workers focus their Exodus on...West & South. Thus increasing the available work force in Your areas. so 3 Million displaced workers are heading your way, heads Up.
The last time this happened the saying was 'last one Out of MI turn off the lights', Now add the entire Rust Belt work force.
So do I want a Guy who's willing to twist a 'buddies' Arm, to not only do the right thing, but to continue building his own Reputation and the admiration of the masses..You Bet!
Make Him Ruthless and make him ambitious, as long as he's working for US!

You can see that political campaigns operate on the logical falacy of "bandwagonning" and "appeal to authority." Because our educational system is designed to condition people to follow the herd, it is not surprising that we get the same well funded, corporate/military thugs running the government each cycle.

Don't expect anything to change soon. As long as the responsibility for operating the public school system is controlled from the "top." aka Washington and it's hirerlings.

"MANY analogies are used to describe this dynamic. "Herding" is the obvious one. Another is "contagion". More often it's called an "informational cascade" — the fact that many people believe something convinces more people of that thing, which settles it for still more people, and so on.

Compounding this tendency to accept the beliefs of others is something cognitive psychologists call "confirmation bias" — when people believe something to be true, they will go looking for, and uncritically accept, information that confirms what they believe; they will not seek out information that contradicts their belief, and, if confronted with it, they will be sceptical and quick to dismiss it.

Put confirmation bias together with an information cascade and you have the ingredients for mass delusion. First, a number of people come to believe a falsehood ("housing prices always rise") is actually true; confirmation bias kicks in and they become all the more certain they are right; the fact that many people are strongly convinced that "housing prices always rise" convinces others. And on it goes, sweeping over thousands, millions, hundreds of millions of people — until "everybody knows" something that is absolutely untrue."

You can read the whole article here, but this is the most relevant to the above question.

How come Rahn did not whisper into Clinton's ear?
And WHO was whispering into Bush's ear to cause the Iraqie war?

And how much whispering influence does the Saudi prince have on our economy? and our politics? and why? and how has the oil Cartel influenced us? and what others families are part of the oil cartel?

And how was the CIA blunder involved?

Oh and do you think that this war with Iraq is about saving Israel? or is it just about oil....and our military Industrial complex?

Oh and how close do you think we are to a deterioration of any semblance of democracy? And how will we end up...like the Saudi's perhaps? And whose fault will that be?

And is peace the Palestinian goal?
Have the words:
No peace until we distroy Israel

Successful politicians tap newly emerging, profitable industries for contributions.

LBJ went to the oil industry.

Emanuel and the Current Democratic party went to the financial industry because that is where the money is - to quote a famous bank robber.

FDR tapped the elder Kennedy to rewrite laws governing Wall Street because Kennedy knew the territory.

Time will tell whether Emanuel and Obama can tame the financial industry or whether they will be corrupted by it. I would not bet on the industry winning. Obama and Emanuel are not innocents. They know the game that will be played. And they expect to win.

Come on,politicians 'buying their way to power' is as old a history. Politics is the rich man's sport. Sure folks will scream " But Obama is from the middle class!!". Yes sure the middleclass of Hawai'i!!!

I hate to tell you but 'Middleclass hawaiian,is upper middleclass to the mainlanders. All politicians come from money, that's why they constatnly suck up to the 1%'ers. They have to to survive.

Maybe Barack will be the 'Deliverer' But from what I'm watching so far, he's the same old
politican dog pissing on the fire hydrant that's become modern America.

If there's going to be change for this country that comes to DC,it's going to be lead by the people and not the politicians! They have whipped up a very potent brew and fed it to the people. HOPE. When that seems to be getting the short stick, the people will bring it to DC ourselves and make the bastards do their jobs...as SERVANTS OF PUBLIC WILL.

The next wealthy bailed out by raping the taxpayer barrel better be 'The People'.

As far as this story goes it only goes to show that nothing has changed and the jerks are having a great time waving their dicks in our faces because they think they can get away with it......for now.

He used his money to eliminate anti-war candidates even though the majority of Dems, and the majority of the public, wanted them on the slate.

The fact that he made his money in dealings with crooks like Marc Rich, or that he served in the Israeli army and refused to serve in the American army, or that he may or may not hold dual citizenship...these are secondary issues.

The main issue is the fact that he does his best to manipulate American politics in the interests of a foreign nation. There's a word for that.

The Real Point of Emmanuel's Appointment was his financial industry connections not Israel.
Posted by: yellow on Dec 9, 2008 2:46 PM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The appointment of Emanuel to the position of White House Chief of Staff was to send a clear message to the US financial industry; the most powerful and wealthiest industry in the US. The messege was that they have nothing to fear from an Obama Administration which would do nothing to harm their interests. The messege was grasped by Wall Street very early in the 2008 presidential election campaign. According to the Center for Responsive Politics Obama received $33.1 million to John McCain's $26.2 million, or roughly 55% of total contributions from the Financial, Insurance & Real Estate (FIRE) industry. These are the folks that caused our financial meltdown and they are eager to avoid the future repercussions. According to Steve Weissman of the Campaign Finance Institute "The interests of people who make $250,000 [a year] and above are not simply their tax rates. It becomes a much broader issue of who they think can do best for the country and who they think they want to have influence with." For many of these folks that politician seems to be Mr. Obama. Obama was sceptical of the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act effectively repealing Glass-Steagall. His VP, Joe Biden, supported it along with many other Democrats. Perhaps this is why the Dems got so much Wall Street money. The Dems are just that; Democrats not social democrats. They are just another big business party only more practical and realistic than the Republicans.

And Israel, of course, has nothing to do with any of this because they are safe on any US Presidents watch. Israel and the Saudis are America's big allies in the Middle East.

Time and again I have seen Alternet used as a forum for anti-semitic, Jew-bashing....Perhaps it is time to consider that out and out lies or misinformation used as propaganda without bias or facts be included in your rule: No comments that are RACIST, SEXIST AND DISCRIMINATORY will be printed.

We are in serious trouble now...and the last thing we need is once again to confuse people's reality with scapegoating.

Again and again the Federal REseve Bank is being branded on this site as "privately owned by the Jews".......therefore I would like to correct this error.

The Federal Reserve Bank is an arm of the US government. It was first written into existance by Pres.W. Wilson.

There are governors of the regional Federal Reserve Banks. There are NO owners. They are audited by our government agencies.

Congress is the only authority over the Federal REserve. It was originally set up this way to be outside of the political arena and therefore it is considered private while being a government body.

The Federal REseve Bank does not keep any profits it earns, as all profits are turned over to our government.

It does, in our global economy, have connections with Foreign banks however, they are considered seperate banks.

These facts can be checked on the Federal Reserve web site.

Please acknowledge this error publically. Thank you in advance for your unbiased search for truth.

of the federal reserve were "turned over to the US government", the US government wouldn't be bankrupt like it is. Get your facts straight.

Check the federal reserve bank web site.

Turning profits over to our government is the law. I did not say the law is carried out, I do not know if it is -- do you really know exactly why the USA is bankrupt. The only thing we know for sure is that greed and theft and stupidity and herd mentality are some of the reasons. And one big solution is: transparency in business and win-win business investments.
The point I was clearly making is: the Jews do not own the Federal Reserve...that is clearly anti-semetic propaganda whose effect is to misdirect attention away from the problems we have to solve! And I have to wonder why this web site is being used to spread the hate?

Mossad already owns Obama (he picked Rahm Emanuel, the son of a terrorist, noted criminal, fought for Israel in 1991 and appointed him Chief of Staff). Obama will probably let Mossad slide on their 9/11 involvement and Obama will continue their wars. So who won the US election? Israel did, as always.

In the hope that brain storming will upgrading human understanding

RE: Hellfine, it's time someone had the courage to say it!

Thank you for being reasonable and trying to open a logical intelligent conversation about truth and understanding.

And thank you for agreeing that there is really NO Jewish conspiracy and only some Jews got a piece of the $700B bailout.

Thanks to your thoughtful commentary we have been moved out of the single digit lie to a discussion of the DANGER of overstatements:

First, what do you mean by disproportionate?
a. disproportionate to other ethnic and religious groups? disproportionate to the NY population?
b. disproportionate to the fact that Jews are a small group of people who have worked and studied hard.......and are therefore disproportionately (according to their numbers) intergrated into the professions and often contribute hugely to the pool of world thinking in the creative, scientific, financial, academic. trades and the serving professions.

Overstatements are a huge danger to truth, justice, problem solving and community. By grabbing a fragmented piece of truth and selling it as truth...one has created a lie that misdirects attention away from core reality and recreats a new emotionally charged reality.

Most human beings register information by instantaineously grouping a new piece of information with like generalized memories that have been hard wired, either through education, conditioning, experience or inborn responses into their minds. This thinking seems to bypass, in most people the internal mechanism that causes reflection and questioning which opens the mind to evaluation that can make fine distinctions and perceive differences as well as similarities in thought. Therefore reasoning jumps off the path of logic and makes a huge leap from some fragmented pieces of truth to looming overstatements that become lodged in the mind and can be activated to errupt.

Applied specifically to this context: 700Billion dollars went to the financial industry.
a Large number of the Jewish population live and work in NY
the financial industry offers a huge source of jobs particularly in these last 30 years, when most of this ethnic group have been Americanized and educated out of the sweat shops and momma and poppa stores.
Also, New York's manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas.
so...a disproportiionate (to the ratio of NY Jew to USA non Jew) number of NY Jews work in the financial industry .
and some have risen to the top level
and have been paid handsomely
(while most jews worked for base salaries)

LEAP....

therefore, JEWS got the 700B dollar

This statement went step by step from logic to overstatement to anti semitismatic propaganda that is used to manipulate anger.. and becomes grist for the mill of human repetitive thought that turns into distructive energy culminating in .......(you fill in the horrors of man's inhumanity to man)..

So, there are two groups of people who have traditionally benifited from this type of propaganda....
a. those who need a safe outlet onto whom to release their pain turned into ange r that grows into group rage..that is released onto the decoy.....a scapegoat...

b. those, including some corrupt Jews, (as far as I can see not necessary disproportionate since many industries that are not top or bottom heavy in jews on their payroll have been robbing Main Street for years...ex..oil industry, food industry, the military industrial complex etc,..and, I reiterate, there are no disproportionate number of Jews in these professions.

So to my understanding saying the Jews got $700B is not just a overstatement...it is a lie that has in its core a flimisy piece of truth....the real truth....the Financial industry got 700B dollars. We assume that the benifactors were the leaders, ..and list the percentage of ethnic groups involved......but if you do this you set a precedent to do this in every bail out.

All spin and overstatement stands firmly as a basis of harm to humanity as it misinforms the judgement and misdirects the action of humanity.

Summary:...There may be many Federal Reserve and Treasury officials who are Jews..but there are also many who are not.....therefore, with much regret I must conclude beyond a shadow of doubt that saying the Jews got $700B of taxpayers money is a lie spun out of the truth that bespeaks...ANTI SEMITISM

FOR THOSE
Posted by: using on Dec 11, 2008 8:47 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
who do NOT realize that they harbor and contribute to the groupthink of anti semitism.
Oh and by the way, the proportionate level of protection of the Jew to non - Jew hardly ever allows them the "untouchable" status. They have throughout history been on the "you never know when the axe can fall level" no matter how honest and well serving. And this is caused by a leap in simplified seemingly logical stripping of a fragmented piece of truth from a larger truth that festers into groupthink that can cause lynching and Kristleneichts.

In any case, just to quickly reply to your statement......there are a disproporiate (meaning ratio of number of Jews to the overall population) in all the professions....creative, academic theorists, scientific, serving professions and workers and some (a disportionate amount) have greatly contributed to the accumulative positive thinking of the world. THat said: in many countries Jews..have been forced to only deal with money: a. not allowed to own land
in many countries
b. tax collectors because those that owned the land and had the power didn't want to be the ones the peasants blamed for their lot in life.
c. the Jews learned to save their money.....because they never knew when they or their brethern across the world would need to be saved from the claws of anti semitism which was firmly etched into the minds of the gullible.
d. therefore Jews need to save their money to buy off who ever would be willing to offer them a promise of help....so they could escape atleast with their children's lives.
e. and that is how it was that Jews were the ones to go to if you wanted to borrow money since little else was available to them in the way of dealing in the world outside the getto.
e. and some became good at it...while others became the conscience and voice of the world's pain.....

Oh...and where did you get the statistic that 40-50% percent of the American billionaires are Jews????? many charities around the world are waiting with baited breathe for your answer.....because Jews are also notoriously disproportionately heavy donators to charitable causes.

Now if you really wish to begin to be the non-anti-semite well wisher you believe yourself to be and stand on the side of "repairing the world" and help create a BETTER,MORE JUST SOCIETY you would:
a. have to recognize the jump in logic (scroll down and do feel free to respond) that your rationization of selecting Jews for the fronet line of our society's current demise....and begin to consider the larger truth that has always kept your gullible populace and us that pride ourselves on being rational thinkers, stuck in the cave (Plato)....you would become (seeming disporportionate to your groupthink) a spokesperson to the gullible populace against the glitch in thinking and a fighter in creating a more JUST World.

Thank you for the opportunity: to continue the dialogue.....and call on you to join us who are trying to help understand how to bring about a higher level of thinking that would bring about a fairer, better, kinder humanity that would protect us all from "man's inhumanity to man".
P.S. Would you join us, in our quest for a better future, when our society specifically and our earth in general needs so much help before we slip back into a New Dark Age from which even those who think the top is their permenant place or those who are statisfied with the status quo...will suffer.

Jews Have a Higher IQ

Therefore they are disproportionally at the top of the food chain. Academics studies have been done on IQ. Sorry if this is not politically correct....but it can't be refuted.

But there are plenty at the lower levels of the food chain. Funny they don't get affirmative action as they are a minority.

They are dissproportionatly represented in Medicine and Science, but, unfortunately, underrepresented in basketball and football. Go figure.........

the Jews are on top of the food chain????

Really...

The Jews are predominately in the middle of the food chain -- or poorer like the helping professionals. Most Jews who get above that usually work for the top. If they are smart leaders like our Joseph and the Pharoh is wise .. then they greatly benifit a society.

A few earn enough money to be considered top, but are rarely an accepted part of our upper class. You remember Joseph Kennedy never was accepted either. (Money needs time to be washed clean and besides he was a Catholic).
So far, no known Jew that I am aware of has ever been laundered enough, no matter how honest their dealings. As a matter of fact, it was not too long ago that hotels signs read: NO JEWS, BLACKS OR DOGS ALLOWED.
Remember Gregory Peck in Gentlemen's Agreement?

Those at the real top of the food chain have rarely been visible enough to covet or transparent enough to be aware of their dealings.

So what he made millions on Wall Street? Give it a rest people. He ain't no different from the rest of them. Why do people think that those who are selected to high office be perfect human beings. We Americans are so damn idealistic, it's sickening. Get over it!

Mr. E is also tied very closely, through family ties going back generations, to the more militant and expansionist Israeli factions. One of his ancestors (father or grandfather, I believe) was a leader of one of the early terrorist groups fighting against the British in the 40's. Conflicts of interest in more than one area, I'm afraid.

We must remember recent history. W, of course, was the puppet of nefarious influences. But other presidents with far more intellect and good intentions (Jimmy Carter, for example) have been undermined by those that they chose to surround them. We all need to monitor the less visible members of this, or any, administration.
