It Is Now Absolutely Crystal Clear That Republican Rule Is Dangerous and Authoritarian

Republicans rule, rather than govern, when they are in power by imposing their authoritarian conservative philosophy on everyone, as their answer for everything. This works for them because their interest is in power, and in what it can do for those who think as they do. Ruling, of course, must be distinguished from governing, which is a more nuanced process that entails give-and-take and the kind of compromises that are often necessary to find a consensus and solutions that will best serve the interests of all Americans.

Republicans' authoritarian rule can also be characterized by its striking incivility and intolerance toward those who do not view the world as Republicans do. Their insufferable attitude is not dangerous in itself, but it is employed to accomplish what they want, which it to take care of themselves and those who work to keep them in power.

Authoritarian conservatives are primarily anti-government, except where they believe the government can be useful to impose moral or social order (for example, with respect to matters like abortion, prayer in schools, or prohibiting sexually-explicit information from public view). Similarly, Republicans' limited-government attitude does not apply regarding national security, where they feel there can never be too much government activity - nor are the rights and liberties of individuals respected when national security is involved. Authoritarian Republicans do oppose the government interfering with markets and the economy, however -- and generally oppose the government's doing anything to help anyone they feel should be able to help themselves.

In my book Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches, I set forth the facts regarding the consequences of the Republicans' controlling government for too many years. No Republican -- nor anyone else, for that matter -- has refuted these facts, and for good reason: They are irrefutable.

The McCain/Palin Ticket Perfectly Fits the Authoritarian Conservative Mold

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin, the Republican candidates, have shown themselves to be unapologetic and archetypical authoritarian conservatives. Indeed, their campaign has warmed the hearts of fellow authoritarians, who applaud them for their negativity, nastiness, and dishonest ploys and only criticize them for not offering more of the same.

The McCain/Palin campaign has assumed a typical authoritarian posture: The candidates provide no true, specific proposals to address America's needs. Rather, they simply ask voters to "trust us" and suggest that their opponents - Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden - are not "real Americans" like McCain, Palin, and the voters they are seeking to court. Accordingly, McCain and Plain have called Obama "a socialist," "a redistributionist," "a Marxist," and "a communist" - without a shred of evidence to support their name-calling, for these terms are pejorative, rather than in any manner descriptive. This is the way authoritarian leaders operate.

In my book Conservatives Without Conscience, I set forth the traits of authoritarian leaders and followers, which have been distilled from a half-century of empirical research, during which thousands of people have voluntarily been interviewed by social scientists. The touch points in these somewhat-overlapping lists of character traits provide a clear picture of the characters of both John McCain and Sarah Palin.

McCain, especially, fits perfectly as an authoritarian leader. Such leaders possess most, if not all, of these traits:

* dominating

* opposes equality

* desirous of personal power

* amoral

* intimidating and bullying

* faintly hedonistic

* vengeful

* pitiless

* exploitive

* manipulative

* dishonest

* cheats to win

* highly prejudiced (racist, sexist, homophobic)

* mean-spirited

* militant

* nationalistic

* tells others what they want to hear

* takes advantage of "suckers"

* specializes in creating false images to sell self

* may or may not be religious

* usually politically and economically conservative/Republican

Incidentally, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney also can be described by these well-defined and typical traits -- which is why a McCain presidency is so likely to be nearly identical to a Bush presidency.

Clearly, Sarah Palin also has some qualities typical of authoritarian leaders, not to mention almost all of the traits found among authoritarian followers. Specifically, such followers can be described as follows:

The greatest threat to our liberty since the Cold War ended has been the "Project for a New American Century" (PNAC) -- a rightwing extremist organization founded in 1997.

Senator McCain is a PNAC member with a long history of rightwing (neoconservative) activities. To learn why he will be the most dangerous U.S. president EVER if elected, visit the following nonprofit website: www.FreedomCentralUSA.com

On November 5th, we will know how many "Good Germans" there are in America. Obama may or may not have the seeds of greatness. He's not nearly liberal enough for my taste. but his moderation puts him well ahead of McCain.

I think that the real tests he faces are truly balancing the budget and reducing our infected levels of national debt as well as healing and reunifying the country.

But I fear what can happen between election day and inauguration day. My fingers are crossed.

The election can still be stolen by the Republican Party machine

Electronic voting still leaves no paper trail, the machines can still be tampered with, before and after, voter caging still exists, and if you’ve mailed in your ballot, you may not have voted at all because of small technicalities. In some states, if you don't have a perfect information match, your request for an absentee ballot gets rejected, courtesy of Republican gatekeepers.

What you might do about it.

Miami - what?
Posted by: reinaldok on Nov 1, 2008 3:39 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Yes, this sure is a strange election. Miami has presently three ultra-ultra right wing congress persons. All three, leaders of the Miami based never ending opposition to the Cuban government. More embargo - almost no family visits etc etc. They make the Bush Cheney gang look like far left pinkos. Into the fray comes congresswoman Debbie-Wasserman Schultz. She represents the area north of Miami and is a DEMOCRAT and has certainly been a rising star in the demos politics. Great friend of Pelosi. Seconded the nomination at the convention. Was one of the first backers of Hillary. OK. What's so strange? Simply Wasserman-Schultz absolutely refuses to offer any opposition to the dismal republican congress people from the area. Her so very lame excuse, "They are my friends" I have yet to hear or read of any outrage from the Florida or National democrats. Sure makes you wonder, just what is going on. And then the demos will cry and pout when they lose Florida.
This time, it won't be the chads.

Why the Right succeeds
Posted by: citizenjoe on Nov 1, 2008 5:22 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
John Dean was once President Nixon's personal lawyer. He has become a thoughtful conservative alienated from the neo-con authoritarian extreme right which has connived its way to power.He makes one statement that shows to me his lack of understanding of politics generally. He says that if Americans select the McCain cohort over Obama, then they are to stupid to have a republic: "If Obama is rejected on November 4th for another authoritarian conservative like McCain, I must ask if Americans are sufficiently intelligent to competently govern themselves."

This reveals Dean's conservative elitism, but much more seriously, it fails to come to grip with the appeal the far right has to Americans and once had to the Europeans who accepted fascism. The extreme right says "Americans (or Germans, Italians, etc) are superior to all other nations and must rule them for their own good. Only America is a really stable and democracy so only America can knock heads to bring about a world order of democracies. The world is either ruled by Americans or America and the whole world will go up in flames from terrorists and rogue states running wild."

While I think this view is false, indeed, a tenet of new American fascism, I do not think it is stupid. That is to underestimate its appeal. Sure, blind nationalists accept it unthinkingly, but so do millions of people who see America as both a stable democracy and as worlds only super power. Shouldn't the super power make sure the world goes in the right direction? Isn't that the responsibility history has assigned to America? False indeed but not stupid.-

"Our Government Leaders, are People, who are ... Members of a Political Party...
Posted by: One American Lady on Nov 1, 2008 5:36 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
& it is Not the Political Party, which causes Improvement or Destruction to the Lives of Americans...
IT'S THE "PERSONAL BELIEFS, OF THOSE WHO... SIT IN THAT POSITION... OF LEADERSHIP"... who do the most damage to the American People.
As Yourself, "how many of these people, live a life, that is Obedience to the Laws of the Constitution??"
Americans are Supposed to Have the Opportunity to Exercise (Constitutional) Rights... NOT BE REQUIRED TO "ABIDE BY THE RULES / REGULATIONS OF SOME PERSONAL BELIEFS OF ANY INDIVIDUAL"... but some Leaders, sure like to Inject Our Lives, with Their Personal Beliefs... instead, of Allowing the Constitutional Rights, to Govern All Actions, of Any Citizens of America.
NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO "INFRINGE THEIR PERSONAL BELIEF, ONTO THE LIFE OF ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL... but, EVERYONE, IS *SUPPOSED TO BE OBEDIENT TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL LAWS*,
"NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW"... no matter, what Position in Life, they have permission, to Possess.
There are Many of the Leaders of American Government, who can be Admired, for Being Obedient to the Laws of the Constitution & Bill of Rights.
To Those Individuals, I say: "Thank You, & You Are Appreciated, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, KEEP ON BEING A GOOD *ROLE MODEL, FOR OUR CHILDREN / OUR GRANDCHILDREN*.
We Need More Examples, of Good Role Models, so Our Children & Grandchildren, ARE EXPOSED TO A VARIETY OF CHARACTERISTICS / PERSONALITIES, which are Not of a Conflicting Nature... Which are Not Against the Constitutional Laws... which were Established for the Protection of Each of Us & Our Rights as an Individual, Human Being.
To say that a Democrat / a Republic, has Caused Much Damage to the Lives of the American People, is a Wrong Assumption... when the Basic Cause, is the Person, who sits in that office... & Claims they Proerly Represent the People... when they Do Not.
There are More than Just Two Political Parties in Existence, these days, & yet, why do some people... Focus, on a Certain One or Two Political Party... when it comes, to BLAMING SOMEONE FOR ANY DECREASE / INCREASE, IN ANY
TRANSACTIONS, WHICH EFFECT THE PEOPLE IN AMERICA ??
I suppose, someone has to be Blamed for a Decline in the Economy... so the Republican Party, is to "Take the Fall", huh?
I registered to vote... Democratic Ticket... but then... I'm not sure I want to Vote Democratic or Republican Ticket.
The Attitudes of the Leaders, are so Conflicting & Exhibiting Behaviors of Aggressiveness & per se: Mental Illness Behaviors of Anger, etc... that "Why Should We Accept this Type of Behavior... when we are supposed to have High Regard, for a U.S. President???
Do we want any Person to be a U.S. President, who is Exhibiting hatred / harsh, Feedback, to Destroy the Life of Another...
I'd say, Fault lies, in Leaders from Both Parties of the Democrats & the Republicans...
THEIR BEHAVIORS, OF LATE... HAVE NOT BEEN ... ACCEPTABLE... TO WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE... THE TYPE OF ... ROLE MODELS... WHICH ARE PROPER FOR OUR CHILDREN / GRANDCHILDREN, TO BE EXPOSED TO IT...
Publicly Voicing Hatred / etc... for an Apponent... is Like... Promoting War... & wanting to "Fight it out, on a Battlefield", where Lives Can Be Lost...to death.
Is it worth it, when America, does Not Have a Leader, who has No Respect for Themselves / Their Counterparts ??
Why should a Candidate, have to worry about the Personal Side of the opponent, when "their own nose is clean"... & they've done all they can, in Representing the People... properly, ...or have they??
After 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 4, 2008, American People, will have Voted, on Their Choice... for a Candidate to Take Office as U.S. President.
(What if that person, doesn't provide the proper representation, & you voted for that person... ??).
Then who are you gonna put the blame on?

Great post, Mr. Dean. It's ominous to read the characteristics of the authoritarian leader as they relate to McCain and downright terrifying to read the characteristics of the authoritarian follower as they relate to Palin. McCain certainly strikes me as amoral and tyrannical; and they both seem to be perilously narcissistic. If 25 percent of the population is susceptible to this mindset, maybe it should be the subject of training in both the psychology and political science fields. Clearly the other 75 percent of us deserve fair warning and protection! Anyway, thanks for the great article. Will we be seeing you soon on Countdown? You're always such a compelling guest.

Leaders are "amoral, mainpulative, mean-spirited."

Followers are "intolerant, narrow-minded, mean-spirited."

And just how is this consistent with democracy?

Best summary I've seen about why Democrats are to be preferred to Republicans and why everyone who is not "mean-spirited etc etc etc" should vote for Obama on Tuesday, if not before.

They're getting more attention in most races than are even the moderately progressive Democrats if you look closely. As for the Republicans, they're right now warped in their wacky and now bankrupt "conservative" ideology which has ironically added neoconservative and neoliberalism to the mix. It would be nice if the GOP were the party of Eisenhower and NOT the party of Nixon, Raygun, Rove, Bush, Cheney, etc ... And I still often wonder about this author. If the Watergate scandal hadn't broken out, how far to the right would John Dean have gone?

Oh and by the way, looks like even some of the Raygun schmucks are endorsing Obama. This somehow does sit well with me because I now fear that Obama will once again let the base get bulldozed for the next 4 or even 8 years depending on how many terms he gets elected to office. Is it just me or is Obama really nothing more than Bill Clinton v2.0 ? The Republicans will only get dangerous when the Democrats let them as has been the case for 40 years.

Republicans have dishonored Our founding principles as much as the Religious Right has disregarded the 10 commandents.
Yes Sweethearts our country was founded in the ideals of Chrisitianity, however it has not acted as such in the last 30 yrs, Thanks to YOU!
Trickle Down was an abomination to the Free market Doctrine. The Religious Right has been an abomination to the most basic Creeds of Christianity.
As many Constitutional rights have been broken as Commandments by you and your Political Allies. You have Ruined this country by failing to adhere to the very principles which guided our ancestors in Our founding.
'Love thy neighbor' does not have an (*)/ a disclaimer of 'Only White Chrisitans'. It means ALL other 'Children of God' regardless of race, gender or religious doctrine
'All men are Created Equal' was the outgrowth of that Commandment.
'Do not Steal','Do not Covet' also did not have an (*) disclaimer stating unless You must possess it.
'Life Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness' are the words the founders used to convey this tennent, along with the obvious "Inalienable Rights"What reflects the Word of God better than that which is inscribe below Our Lady Liberty..."give me your tired, Your Poor, Your Huddle masses yearning to breath Free"
Christians were persecuted, why would they fight to build a country which would do such injustice to ANYONE else?
Do you not yet see your Hypocracy, your Heresy and your Treasonous Ways ??
What makes your doctrines any different from that of the Oppressive Monarchies and Church of the Dark Ages....absolutley Nothing!

President Is a Puppet for Military,Industrial,Oil, central private bank Complex
Posted by: 911FalseFlag on Nov 1, 2008 7:50 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I come from the position that the military-industrial oil private central banking complex controls the United States government and that the President is a puppet with little power. Of course, George Bush doing the bidding of this complex has expanded greatly the power of the presidency to install fascism in this country.

Even Obama speaks about the "war on terror" and has said before the annual meeting of AIPAC that the military option against Iran is not off the table. Hillary Clinton said the same thing at the same meeting. We all know where John McCain stands about 100 years of war in Iraq. And where he stands about bombing Iran.

I wrote an article that was published on Counter currents about why the Democrats will not impeach Bush. For the same reason, no politician will permit an investigation of 9/11. If they did, then most if not all of Congress would be shown to be complicit since they have to know that 9/11 was an inside job. They have done nothing about it other than succumb to the Fascist power takeover by the neocons. the Democrats have not made any real attempt to impeach Bush and Cheney.

The economic crisis is in my mind an economic 9/11. I have a video on the homepage my website explaining the real reason why Eliot Spitzer was politically assassinated by the Bush administration. The Bush family has been involved in other financial frauds of a national proportion.

It is my opinion that the truth about 9/11 will never be told just like the truth about the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Paul Wellstone and John F. Kennedy Jr. will never be told By the mainstream media. Of course you could find out the truth about all of these by reading some of the investigative journalists who spent much energy and time investigating these incidences.

Even watch a short talk by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the homepage my website. He mentions that as a result of the consolidation in the ownership of all aspects of the media in this country into five corporations that in the last 15 years 80% of the investigative journalists have been fired. These are the people of course who connect the dots between bad things happening and the people in power.

I predict that McCain will win and the next day the media will simply and plausibly explain the upset by saying that this country was not ready for a black "Muslim" but was ready for a woman vice president.

The bottom line is I think this country's political system is completely corrupted and that there is no way to fix it . Like George Carlin who said, in response to the charge that he was cynical, that he was and a rational skeptic. I relate strongly to where he was coming from.

Please give me your thoughts about what I have said above. How do the countries that you are familiar with view 9/11 and the current political situation in his country?

For many articles and videos go to my website which is www.911inside job.net.

John Dean has questioned the rationality and true nature of these republican authoritarians, and rightly so; the conservative right wing republican stalwarts (all 70 million of them)are actually ignorant lemmings steeped in biblical self righteousness. A republican win is what they deserve but their masochistic nature will not satisfied by an Obama win. Too bad!

About attacking Iraq: "Most of them would attack France, Massachusetts, or the moon if the president said it was necessary 'for freedom'". They believe him and it, and hang out only with like minded people. It's going on all around us. There is no better example than Sarah Palin. A good read. Thanks, ANNA

One good thing about this very public upheaval, and the Internet, (aka AlterNet) is that other nations know that most Americans do not want wars, violence, abuses of power . . . at least I hope all nations read the outpouring from our hearts, and get to know the true heart and minds of most Americans - realizing what "christianity" has done to so many, and other religions to other nations!

I shudder to think of more wars -- anywhere! Humans are not mere animals! When I think about McBlame's thoughtless rant, "Bomb, bomb Iran" I think of the incredibly magnificent mosaic building in Iran (a mosque), and the history of our civilization there, and worse, in all locations that have been destroyed by the power-hungry idiots throughout history.

In America, where great tribes existed far older than even ancient Egypt, war and violence has destroyed so very much, already; imagine that in other parts of our world (Read Hidden Cities, Roger G. Kennedy).

Why the nation, indeed the entire world, did not jump on McBlame for his evil, yet revealing juvenile comment is beyond me. And the same with Palin's very ignorant, yet dangerous generalities; she is a mere brain-washed victim of "Party abuse".

We should, and we must react. Never permit such idiotic comments be spoken, or acted upon, without SPEAKING OUT! ACT NOW! It's not too late.

Authoritarian, Yes. Conservative, No -- GOP Has Gone Fascist
Posted by: SkeeterVT1 on Nov 1, 2008 9:07 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It is a gross misnomer for John Dean or anyone else to describe today's Republican Party as "Authoritarian Conservative."

Authoritarian? Most definitely. Conservative? No way.

The last eight years of the Bush-Cheney regime -- and yes, I said "regime," not "administration," with its unprecedented disregard for the Bill of Rights enshrined in our Constitution -- has proven beyond doubt that the Republican Party has moved far beyond conservatism and has crossed the line into the realm of outright fascism.

When GOP Congresswoman Bachmann calls those who oppose the GOP agenda "anti-American," that's fascism. Benito Mussolini must be very proud of her.

When right-wing GOP extremists tar Barack Obama as a "Muslim" and claim he has ties to terrorists, that's fascism. It seems that in the eyes of today's neo-fascist Republican Party, Muslims are the new Jews.

Much of the rabid anti-Muslim rhetoric today coming out of the mouths of the Republicans bears a frightening similarity to the rabid anti-Jewish rhetoric in the 1920s and 1930s that came out of the mouths of the Nazis.

And the thinly-disguised Afrophobic racism of many Republicans and their even more extremist right-wing allies toward Obama rivals the Nazis' anti-Semitism. To say nothing of their overt Latinophobia that fuels their passionate rhetoric over illegal immigration.

In short, the Republican Party has morphed into a fascist party that has moved so far away from the American mainstream with its exclusionary racism, blatant classism and increasing Islmophobia. Just look at their convention -- the delegates were almost exclusively white, predominantly rich, predominantly male and firmly controlled by right-wing theocratic Christian evangelicals hell-bent on "armageddon" against the Muslim world.

The time is long overdue for the GOP to be cast into the political wilderness and kept there until the Party of Lincoln returns to the mainstream by becoming an inclusive party.

The root cause of authoritianism

Thank you for this illuminating article, Mr. Dean. I hope it will give liberals understanding of Republican pathology, and provide tools to use when confronting those afflicted with the family of authoritarian personality disorders (APD). The preferred treatments for extreme disorders are anti-psychotic drugs such as Haldol. Cognitive psychological therapy or behavioral modification techniques have not proven effective in limited studies, suggesting an organic etiology. Ergo, APD can be ironically classified as a disease, and its suffers victims

Dr. Altemeyer's work on narcissistic, sadistic and fascistic personality disorders is world renowned and good reading for social activists who want to understand the psycho-social dynamics of the "true-believer". Building off post-WWII work of Stanley Milgrew and German behaviorist T.W. Adorno, (who created the first test for Fascist beliefs, called the F-scale), Dr. Altemeyer created the definitive assessment for identifying the authoritative FOLLOWER; the FWA-scale. It's a pity Dr. Altemeyer's research isn't replicated much at American universities. I imagine it's hard to get grant money from Lily or Pfizer, whose self-interests dictate conformity to the status quo. Someone should fund a test which could help identify the fascistic LEADER personality.

Medical researchers have varying theories for the causality of the fascistic follower APD type. Some say sexual or developmental trauma cause heavy reliance on conformity and control. Others think there may be genetic markers which increase adrenal and pineal secretions, leading to feelings of fear, paranoia, rigidity, isolation & attack. It may be decades before we chemically understand the creation of the APD follower but we can identify people with those tendencies. The 22 question RWA self assessment can be found at http://members.shaw.ca/jeanaltemeyer/drbob/chapter1.pdf

If you score above 120 on the FWA, you may want to consult a psychiatrist or join the Marines.

Perhaps all candidates for federal office should take this test and release the results, along with their medical histories, so voters can better ascertain their worldview.

If liberals want to make significant progress in changing the world, we have to change MINDSETS, and be catalysts to briging APD sufferers help through self-awareness. It's difficult to feel compassion for someone who feels their survival depends on destroying others "not like them", but if we make the public aware of APD as an illness, with symptoms, causes, behaviors and treatments, we take away a lot of power from the hysterical right wing.

Anyone who has not read John Dean's "Conservatives Without Conscience" is missing a treat. It's a perfect rejoinder to the Goldwater era "Conscience of a Conservative"
and shows diametrically how and where the movement lost its way.

New readers? People back from a galaxy far away? I'd venture a guess that most Alternet readers and letter posters know only too well that the neocons want a fascist dictatorship here, and have come horrifyingly close to attaining that goal. Another stolen election would put the final nail in the coffin of our former democracy, at which time, only a mass uprising demanding a new election, under UN supervision would prevent a complete takeover by the neocons with mcnut and the Alaska harpy fronting for them.

While you are correct that most of us already know this, I don't see the harm in posting the article. People need reminding.

I have great respect for John Dean. He was the epitome of "whistle blower" in the Nixon Administration... he allowed the House of Cards to fall. He wasn't afraid to say the "Emperor Has No Clothes" and because of his bravery, Nixon got the derision he deserved.

I am grateful to John Dean for his writing. I am glad that he is here, now, pointing out the similarities to what he lived through with Nixon, and what we have lived with for the past eight years. The more that truth is in the public sphere, the better.

Republican does not equal authoritarian

Republicans' authoritarian rule can also be characterized by its striking incivility and intolerance toward those who do not view the world as Republicans do.

It's surprising to see an intellect of Dean's caliber willy nilly conflate "Republicans" with "authoritarian conservatives."

As Mr. Dean must surely know, the personality problems listed in this article (and long associated with fascist-style authoritarian personalities) have surfaced with depressing predictability amongst the left as well as the right.

Mr. Dean certainly shouldn't need reminding that traits like "dominating," "desirous of personal power," "manipulative," "dishonest," etc. accurately characterized Mao, Stalin, and many other leftist leaders. Surely Dean is not suggesting that authoritarian personalities occur only on the right.

I would also point out that some of the most unpleasant character traits from his list, including "opposes equality" were the very problems that spurred American feminism's 1960s second wave. Historical accounts are replete with nasty-tempered, sexist, militant, etc. 60s activists who were probably as "intimidating and bullying" as Sean Hannity is today.

While there is little doubt the Republican party has long been a bastion of elitism and corporate privilege, this does not automatically conflate all Republican party members or ideals with authoritarian personality traits.

Nor does it exempt Democrats from scrutiny, criticism, or the danger of caving to authoritarian behavior patterns. Plenty of Democrats are "dominating," "exploitative," and otherwise exhibit authoritarian tendancies that could go very bad if fed with the right amount of petty power.

Unfortunately, like conservative extremists, left-leaning people who refuse to compromise or consider opposing viewpoints are in no short supply on many key issues.

Specifically, the topic of gun rights comes to mind. Many, many liberals are also gun rights advocates but we'd never know that by reading what comes out of the media; mainstream or otherwise; or the DNC. Gun rights were enshrined in our Constitution for a very good reason, by smart people who understood very well about abuse of power and authoritarian personalities.

Republicans have allowed their party to be overrun and compromised by authoritarian neoconservative ideals, primarily born of neoliberal economic theories. This disintegration echoes problems the left experienced with Marxism and Marxist movements for the same reason: neither theory works with real people.

Republicans haven't deserved a vote in a long time and still don't.

But that does not mean authoritarianism won't emerge with a vengeance amongst Democrats/liberals in the future.

There are many self-proclaimed liberals, today, who are out there touting the merits of privatization and closing "public-private" services to public oversight or scrutiny. Do we really want to hand them the keys to the store with no opposing checks on how much public money they receive and what happens to it?

I've got news for you: corporatist interest in taking away public infrastructure and other commons assets wears many disguises, including that of liberal Democrat.

As we know, power corrupts, and checks are always necessary to prevent abuses regardless of who's in power or what their platform dictates.

As 1920s Germany learned all too well, today's Social Democrat is tomorrow's National Socialist.

People are stupid and crave authority regardless of which party it's wrapped in. And there's always somebody waiting in the wings provide them with what they need.

MARK CRISPIN MILLER/ PROFESSOR AT NYU INTERVIEW WITH AMY GOODMAN
Posted by: cori on Nov 1, 2008 1:30 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
MARK CRISPIN MILLER: Yeah, the whole ACORN thing is a first-class propaganda drive. ACORN has done nothing wrong. ACORN has, however, been guilty of trying to register low-income citizens to vote. Because they've been in the sights of the Republican Party for several years now, they've always been extremely scrupulous about checking the registration forms that they garner from their volunteers.

You know, they pay people, basically, to register other voters. So, naturally, from time to time, some volunteer who wants the money will fill out a registration form, you know, with Mickey Mouse or the names of the Dallas Cowboys, something like that. Precisely because that is an ever-present possibility, the people at ACORN have always scrupulously checked the forms before submitting them.

And ten days ago, what they did was, in Las Vegas, their office in Las Vegas, they found a number of these suspicious forms, handed them over directly to the Secretary of State in Nevada, and his response was to turn around and say, "Aha! Here is evidence that you're conspiring to commit voter fraud." Now, that effort, that drive went from Nevada to Missouri to Ohio, and now we hear that the FBI is investigating ACORN.

The Point Joe

is that we have no right to tell other countries and people how to live and govern. This behavior has kept us at war nearly constantly for most of the last century. Pax Americana is a failure and will only lead us to a quick end. We have no devine edict from God, we were not chosen, who says our form of govt. is the best, and the use of our Military might to inflict our will on others could be part of the reason that much of the world doesn't like us very much. It is not our Oil under their dirt. All the other resources around the world are not ours either. To keep up our sham of prosperity, encouraged by Ronnie Raygun and his ilk, we need to dictate, dominate, and use force when they fail. Look where those policies have gotten us, broke, disgraced, our children are dying in a useless war or two,and our right to personal freedom being leached out of us daily. The Sheep need to look up.

Obama Will Win - But What About 2012 or 2016?
Posted by: radical53 on Nov 1, 2008 5:55 PM

Obama will win. Lots of the battleground states have Dem governors now. Florida now has a Republican who is either ethical or pissed off for not being chosen as VP.

Still, the problem of the extreme bias in Cable news and the faulty voting process really need to be addressed.

The media is definitely part of what I call the "power elite" (someone else coined the term but I give it my own definition). Unfortunately, the media is now presenting liberal hosts like Olberman and Maddow to counter the rest of MSNBC, CNN, and Fox. This is not a solution. It just allows the media to pander to viewers without returning to more ethical journalism.

Lou Dobbs has even been mentioned as a Presidential candidate. He replied that he wanted to keep his job in "advocacy journalism", an oxymoron if I ever heard one.

When the media bombards viewers night after night with trivial issues and treats lies and distractions the same as intelligent arguments, progress will be slow or non-existent. Even more basic is the media's ability to mesmerize viewers from cradle to grave with mindless programming.

Dishonest politicians are still able to scare voters with terms like 'socialism' and 'socialized medicine' because there is never an intelligent discussion of the various approaches to policy issues. The American culture of disrespecting education and intelligence has led us to this precipice.

George Wallace said it best, "there's not a dime's worth of difference between" Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas Corpus, Patriot Act, banning books like "America Deceived' from Amazon, Wikipedia and Facebook, warrant-less wiretapping and opening private mail. They are both guilty of treason.
Clean them all out and save this great nation.

Alternet forgot to add in the Democrats to their hit piece.

I find it ridiculous why Alternet bashes the Republican party but then forgets to also trash the Democrat party given they support all the same nasty legislation, such as the "patriot" ACT, the $700 bailout of rich bankers and wealthy stockholders (the Dems would cry if their big bank buddies left their banks with anything less than a $50 severance package (while the laid off common employees are simply screwed).

And let me make special note that Obama (being the ruthless jerk he is) loves the banker bailout and also the "patriot" ACT.

The Democrats also support the bankrupting of the United States given their very best recent leader, Clinton, utterly failed during his term. He tacked on $1 TRILLION to our debt during the biggest wealth gain that the world has ever seen. Holy crap what a loser, just like the Republicans are. All modern big-name politicians (with five or less exceptions, Obama certainly not one of them by any stretch) are simple common criminals, especially Democrats and Republicans.

Yes the Democrats seem to at least hire mentally competent leaders but they are still criminals with disgusting policies, and they much rather deserve to be behind bars rather than in office and yes that includes Obama who voted for the patriot act and banker bailout.

* opposes equality
How?

* intimidating and bullying
Firstly, being intimidating is not necessarily a bad thing. Of course bullying is, but not necessarily intimidating.

* faintly hedonistic
How?

* vengeful
How?

* pitiless
How?

* exploitive
How?

* manipulative
How?

* tells others what they want to hear
Which is just fine as long as he follows through on what he is telling them.

* takes advantage of "suckers"
How? Taking advantage of someone can be good or bad. For example, if I hire someone to help me move I'm taking advantage of them but at the same time they are taking advantage of me.

* may or may not be religious
This point is irrelevant. Despite the fact Alternet is utterly anally retentive in regards to religion because in that it seems to scare them shitless for no good reason, it actually does not have a large impact on job performance that I know of. Not to mention it is illegal to even ask about in a job interview. So the fact this is being mentioned is somewhat offensive. This article is in regards to McCains application for the US Presidency, so I think Alternet should put their money where their mouth is (quite loudly BTW being a leftist organization which I'm not saying is bad) when it comes to fair hiring practices.

* usually politically and economically conservative/Republican
In what way? There are no economic conservatives in Washington that I know of. Economic conservatives prime interest is in reducing the federal debt load, for which Republicans such as McCain and Bush seem to have zero interest in. Rather like the Democrats they seem to have to problem burdening our next generation with a debt load and sending the US to bankruptcy.

I also don't know of any economic conservatives in congress either, aside from Ron Paul. But please enlighten me to any Republican conservatives that may exist.

I would urge anyone who is undecided to watch this clip from the movie "The Day After".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2H1E02iMHg

This isn't about who will raise or lower our taxes or who is pro life or pro choice on abortion, or who adamantly opposes gay marriage etcetera. This is about religious fanatics who want to speed up Armageddon and therefore their "rewards in heaven". This is about having THEM in charge of the button that will send the NUKES to Russia or Iran or anywhere that doesn't follow their OWN flawed belief system, those like Sarah Palin, saved by her witch doctor, or McCain who REALLY doesn't BELIEVE but uses a pretense of belief to get votes.

This IS serious. This is Life or Death for our nation, our way of life and our very LIVES. These are the "pro-lifers" who think NOTHING of murdering DOCTORS they don't agree with, who brush off 4100 Plus dead, and 10s of thousands of wounded American Soldiers with the pat "They volunteered! They KNEW what they were getting into." The ones who do NOT even give a second, or maybe even a FIRST thought to MILLIONS of dead in Iraq and Afghanistan and Syria and Pakistan. These are the people who believe that if someone doesn't roll over and accept THEIR tyrany and have the gaule to disagree can be kidnapped off the street of any other country with no regard to boundaries, torture them for YEARS and keep them locked up, deprived of food, water, clothing, or any other HUMAN nescessity and justify it by having some crooked lawyer change the meaning of words for the purpose of making the illegal, legal.

Watch this clip, and, if you can, watch the whole movie. Watch the aftermath and remember that when that first nuke hits the air, there will be thousands coming back and cannot be stopped. And remember "Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran" McCain and the snickering grin on George W. Bushes face and the Giddy thrill when he talks about a "Mushroom Cloud". And Sarah Palin's rediculous claim "I can see Russia from my back yard, so I have foreign policy experience, more than anyone else." And remember we are now selling Nuclear Bombs to India because they are closer to those our "neocon, fanatical leaders" want to drop them ON.

I wish there were some way to get through to ALL voters that THIS is what it's really all about. But I'll reach as many as I can. McCain, Palin and the rest of the neocons are OUR ENEMY and are DANGEROUS TO THE WHOLE WORLD.

This is a balanced article? This writer is presenting us with legitimate analysis?

He refers to "Republicans' authoritarian rule"--implying that the Democrats don't behave that way when they are in power? Wake up.

He denounces their "striking incivility and intolerance toward those who do not view the world as Republicans do." What planet does he live on? Liberal Democrats are just as intolerant as any Republicans, and usually more so.

He is angry because Republicans "employed [their positions] to accomplish what they want" and "to take care of themselves and those who work to keep them in power"--but Democrats don't? Everybody employs their power to accomplish what they want and to take care of themselves. So what?

This is a silly, naive, immature, and completely uninformed view of what is really happening in the real world. Is this the best that AlterNet can do?
