McCain's Big Backfire: Majority of Americans Like the Idea of Spreading the Wealth

By Alexander Zaitchik, AlterNet. Posted November 1, 2008.

It must come as a surprise to the Republicans that the public favors Obama's style of wealth spreading by a whopping margin.

John McCain and Joe the Plumber are campaigning for Barack Obama, and they don't even know it. The more McCain has ramped up his attacks on Obama as a "spreader of wealth," the more the country has lined up behind the Democrat's plan to spread the wealth. If McCain's economic agenda was a gun and his attacks on Obama's agenda the bullets, the old soldier would have shot both his feet clean off a long time ago.

Watching the GOP's coordinated if increasingly delirious attacks on Obama's economic plan, it's clear that the party is even further out of touch with the America of 2008 than previously imagined. After eight years of establishing and then extending America's lead as the most unequal of all industrialized countries, Republicans thought they could deflect a national groundswell of righteous anger by dusting off and hurling every insult in the conservative arsenal, including old favorites "extremist," "radical," "Marxist" and "socialist." One suspects they are saving "anarchist" and "Hessian" for McCain's last-gasp speech on Monday.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the Republican hammer-and-sickle-themed haunted house: Nobody showed. The McCain campaign's attempts to smear Obama as a Trojan donkey for socialistic un-Americanism have belly-flopped, if not backfired. Obama has not only maintained a stable lead under the Republican barrage, he has increased his positives in the traditionally Republican territory of taxes. The final national polls before Tuesday all show a national hunger for national wealth redistribution downward. An Ipsos/McClatchy poll finds that likely voters prefer Obama's tax plan to McCain's by 8 points. Pew says Obama added to his edge on taxes and the economy between mid-September and mid-October by 6 points, jumping from 44 to 39 earlier to 50 to 35. On Oct. 30, Gallup released results showing Americans favor Obama's style of wealth spreading by a whopping 58-to-37 margin.

It appears the nation's sanity and sense of fairness has reasserted itself to wipe the floor with condescending GOP red-baiting.

It hasn't hurt that the GOP attacks have been absurd on their face. A 3-point increase in the top marginal income tax rate to 39 percent is not easily morphed into the face of Pol Pot. For much of the 20th century, the top income tax rate in the United States slid between 50 percent and 90 percent, peaking at 94 percent during the final two years of World War II. Most Americans would agree that the mid-century rates were excessive, but support for some kind of progressive tax curve remains widespread. Both Bill Clinton and Al Gore ran winning campaigns promising to raise taxes on the rich.

"The public has always supported moderately progressive taxation, so I don't think McCain's pitch had much resonance unless he could convince people that Obama would raise their taxes," says Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. "Obama inoculated himself against this attack by saying that he would cut taxes for 95 percent of the public. Basically, McCain was trying to make things up, and most people didn't believe him."

Charges of socialism are especially discordant coming from the McCain campaign. The top marginal income tax rate held steady at 50 percent for five years under McCain's hero, Ronald Reagan. His other hero, Teddy Roosevelt, was a fierce and early booster for federal income and estate taxes. And Sarah Palin? It wouldn't be all that surprising to see her turn up at a commemoration of this year's 70th anniversary of the Fourth International. As Hendrik Hertzberg noted in one of many recent pieces debunking the newest GOP attack line, the redistributive principle is practiced with particular gusto in Palin's Alaska, where the governor spreads the oil wealth like creamy butter around the state's absorbent white bread. "One of the reasons Palin has been a popular governor," notes Hertzberg, "is that she added an extra $1,200 to this year's (government) check, bringing the per-person total to $3,269." Earlier this summer, Palin boasted to journalist Philip Gourevitch, "Alaskans collectively own the resources. We share in the wealth."

Like Alaskans, we're all socialist now, to an extent, and have been for a long time. It's just a question of daring to speak the adjective's name, which happens to describe hugely popular programs like Social Security and Medicare. Watching McCain's socialist attack line flop, it's tempting to think that the country is edging closer to the day when the word, stripped of its Cold War baggage, no longer has the power to frighten Ohio. Another element is the further eclipse of the culture war by economics. As the country's shifting demographics grow over the divides opened up during the 1960s and '70s, attempts to bundle pinko economics with fears of godless agents of chaos become increasingly meaningless.

The Right is aware of and worried about this growing de-contextualization of the word "socialism." The counterrevolution against the New Deal was aided by the presence of the Soviet Union as a running counterpoint. But it's now almost 20 years after 1989. A generation has matured that never soaked up any of the old propaganda. This generation has studied abroad and knows you can Super-size it in Sweden. It has no memory of "Better Dead Than Red" and can't imagine an elderly British logician making international headlines for saying he'd rather crawl to Moscow on his hands and knees than die in a nuclear war. Conservatives worry about this group much as arms controllers worry that kids today don't understand the dangers posed by nuclear weapons. The right's fright over the post-Cold War generation's immunity to cries of "socialism!" was expressed clearly in an Oct. 27 editorial in the Investor's Business Daily titled "Defining Problems With Socialism for the Post-Cold War Generation."

"John McCain has finally called Barack Obama's agenda by its proper name," it begins. "But if he assumes voters understand what he means when he uses the word 'socialism,' he assumes too much. Sadly, most people under 60 in this country went to schools and universities where socialism isn't considered a bad thing."

Actually, those are two distinct groups -- those who don't understand the word or its gradations, and those who do and wouldn't mind living under most of them. What they have in common is that together they constitute a future United States where the word "socialist" carries an ever-weakening stigma.

Whether we choose to reclaim or dispense with the word, its days as a conversation stopper appear to be over. Over the last eight years, 90 percent of the new income generated has accrued to the top 10 percent, while average family incomes have dropped $2,000. These numbers have engendered bitterness on top of anxiety that has shifted the economic debate. If Democrats get a chance to seek forceful redress in the coming years, Republicans are sure to call Obama a socialist and much else besides. But that's OK. Tuesday's election is going to show that when people are hurting, they don't mind a little "socialism" -- just as long as it's pointed their way.

Most Americans are Pragmatists ...

Most Americans want to do what works to solve our problems efficiently and fairly.

The problem is that both parties and the Corporate Media deliver propaganda designed to promote their own interests. The Republicans promote trickle down with the carrot of the mostly unattainable "work hard", "Ownership Society" wealth while the Democrats push solutions through "top down" programs that reward beauacrats with more benefits than recipients. Both parties and the Corporate Media push the interests of the plutocracy and the Military Industrial Complex at the expense of the public and the country.

Most Americans want to do what is right but the information they get is designed to separate and anger them. We see this in the claim that Americans are conservative by nature. What we are actually seeing is the Pavlovian response of a people bombarded by corporate disinformation and deprived of the real facts about relevant issues.

Fortunately the coming generation hasn't been channeled through the propaganda machine to any where near the extent that we Boomers have been.

"Mixed economies" are the ones that work best.
Posted by: gunboat diplomat on Nov 1, 2008 2:30 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This is actually how most modern democratic countries operate. For example, you could say that our police and military and our public roads and public lands are all examples of socialism.

In the mixed economy, the government plays an active role in ensuring that basic needs are met. This means ensuring the energy supply, doing road upkeep, keeping health care costs low, providing emergency services, etc.

That provides a baseline of stability for economic activity. If the roads and bridges are falling apart, then no one can move goods to market.

Now, where you do not want socialism is in the basic market for goods and services. Think of a farmer's market - that's free market capitalism in action, based on division of labor. It's a much better example of a free market than Wal-Mart is - your local farmer cannot set up a booth inside the big W and sell goods.

The farmer's market is also regulated - but that's not socialism, other than that the people who write the regulations are paid to do so with public tax money. You don't want food that's drenched with toxic pesticides or coated with fecal bacteria - which is usually not a problem at a local farmer's market, where food goes straight from field to table. (Processing plants are the most common source of food contamination.)

Thus, what works best is government-managed programs for universal services like road repair and basic health care, which allows independent businesses in areas from agriculture to industry to information to do what they do best, without having to worry about the electrical grid crashing, the bridges falling apart, and so on.

"Mixed economies" - that's the phrase you want.

I couldn't believe it! It was a jaw dropping example of the stupidity of people who call themselves "Republicans":

There was John McCain, surrounded my an audience of mostly middle class people, saying that Barack Obama shouldn't be elected president because he wants to "spread the wealth". And these assholes are cheering him!

In 1932, sending Franklin D. Roosevelt to the White House was a no-brainer. That should be the case this year with regard to Barack Obama.

Here's what's changed: In the three quarters of a century since the Roosevelt/Hoover contest, the I.Q. of the American people has dropped about seventy-five points. In 1928, the year the GOP nominated Hoover the first time, had the half-witted son of a former, failed president sought the Oval Office, no one even in that party would have taken him seriously. Sixty-eight years later, a huge segment of the people registered to vote in Republican primaries thought the idea of a jackass like George W. Bush sleeping in the Executive Mansion was just a dandy idea.

American standards have fallen alarmingly, haven't they?

2 Choices - Spread the Wealth OR Concentrate the Wealth

See this link to get a good idea of the damage that the last 8 years have brought:

Bush Economic Record

I say we should spread the wealth too!

Yes, we all aspire to be wealthy, but those making > $250,000 per year can afford to pay more and they should too.

Only 1.9% of Americans earn more than $250,000 per year.

Those who make less than $250,000 per year that support McCain's tax policies are either 1) idiots or 2) fools. It's like a slave arguing FOR the continuation of slavery.

Peace!

Tom, your question is appropriate. What is wrong with our population that they believe such fallacies? There is an almost hypnotic quality to the folks that follow the Republicans as is there a similar quality among evangelists. What causes them to be suseptible and others not? I venture to say that it is due to the incessent calls of the media whether it be radio, tv or the internet. Some are obviously more bent toward the biggotry and then tune in Rush, Sean, GWB43, etc and now McCain/Palin. Hearing a message over and over becomes truth and if you already lean that way, well?

I have a friend who is a rightie. I can present fact over fact over fact about policy and he can not take it in. I suppose part of it comes from him knowing how I lean so it is suspect to him, another reason that they won't get it anytime soon if they're still in the rightwingnut camp. THey're lost souls.

run in circles scream and shout: Socialism!
... and then at the same time bailout bankers, insurance companies, and the automobile industry to the tune of almost ONE TRILLION DOLLARS!!!. With no mandate that banks actually lend small businesses money, with no bankruptcy reform for debtors, with no updates on CAFE standards for cars and trucks and with no legislation to end predatory lending practices.
You can't make this stuff up.
For ONE TRILLION DOLLARS!!! the taxpayers ought to see some kind of return on the "investment". If that view makes me a socialist...

I don't think anyone agrees with spreading the wealth, that has any wealth. Those that may agree are probasbly those on the receiving end or the very rich who can affoard it.

The middle class who are working hard and barely getting by aren't so happy about it.

I suspect the minority vote, who are nearly 100% for Obama combined with lower class is whats carrying him!

I heard an intersting interview the other day how Obama's people are now going to try to reduce expectations now that Obama is a sure win. They dont want anyone to really expect all that he promised.

We'vew been hosed again! - no surprise, first the democrat congress fell flat now this will seem to fall flat..Americans will never learn.

both candidates pander to a fantasy. there is no wealth to be spread. tax cuts are a priority for the parties, despite over 10 trillion in national, federal debt, and trillions more in the deadbeat private sector. no tax cuts and massive spending cuts will happen eventually, regardlless of which pandere wins. the federal govt has one role only after the pig like spending spree of americans and both dishonest parties. end federal debt and make our currency valuable to rebuild the economy. there is no pain free solution for either the middle class or high income investors.

obama and mccain are opportunists however. they want government to do something, usually at a high cost.

do the nation a favor. no tax cuts for anyone. cut practically all spending. let the banks sink and the pentagon become a condo.

John McCain's campaign are having folks bussed in to act as willing participants to his boring @ss speeches which say nothing. The last 2 days they have bussed in Middle school and High School students [Band uniforms and all. none of them even voting age] because only 200 real voters are showing up. That's insane. lol

Sarah Palin is in it for Sarah Palin. I'm disgusted with her pimpin her children and demolishing the constitution, amendment by amendment. Has this woman even read the d@mn Constition? The preamble even?

Joe the Plumber- milking his lie for all to see. This guy is a bumb who hasn't made 250k in 5 years, let alone per year. lmao
This guy has a publicist now! Do you hear me? A book deal and recording contract? But dude is a deadbeat father who's behind on his taxes and isn't even a real plumber.

Saddest thing is; The republicans keep trying to sell all 3 as legitimate. It's a circus and Americans had better wake up and make the right choice.

Bogey Men

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
As long as I can remember, politicians (particularly Republican politicians) have been trying to scare everyone with the word communist. This worked amazingly well for them during the McCarthy era but with the McCain campaign we see they are still trying to milk this old cow. It is gratifying to see that it is no longer working so well. Not that they don't have other, similar tricks like the word terrorist. That one may still be working for them.

I probably could but I won't try to find anything good to say about terrorism. However, as unfortunate as the Soviet experiment with Communism was, it is utterly unreasonable to conclude that everything any communist ever did was bad. But that is exactly the message we have heard for the last fifty years about Communism and Socialism.

To listen to the Republican authoritarians, any involvement of government in anything necessarily smacks of communism and for that reason (or un-reason) must be avoided at any cost.

The lesson we should learn from this is that we should not only be vigilant against blindly following doctrines like fascism, communism or terrorism, but we should be equally vigilant about being stampeded into mindless opposition to such ideas. One extreme is as harmful to us as the other because both extremes blind us to possibly good ideas that should be kept on the table and discussed rationally.

What possible reason could there be not to vote for Obama? Maybe because he isn't the right man for the job, regardless of race. Proven Obama has most liberal voting record in the U.S. Senate. Obama is to the left of Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Russ Feingold, Pat Leahy and Barbara Boxer. That's extremely difficult to do. Obama is a textbook big-government, tax-and-spend liberal. He plans to raise income tax rates; capital gains tax rates, Social Security taxes (by virtue of eliminating the cap), dividend taxes, inheritance taxes, and introduce a slew of new taxes. His plan will destroy this country.
"I think he can be ready, but right now I don't believe he is," Biden said in 2007. "The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training." In debate among Democratic hopefuls, moderator George Stephanopoulos pressed Biden whether he stood by a recent quote. Biden said, "I stand by that statement."

After nearly 30 yrs of Economic Feudalism..Ya Betcah We do!

This country is far more akin to a Socialist ideal than a Feudalistic ideal when it comes to Economic Freedom and Justice.
What kind of Economic Structure did most OUR European ancestors escape From...'Trickle Down' which under a Good King or Lord still SUCKED!
By blocking economic freedom the top half assures the middle slides down to lower levels in every passing generation...If you can't make enough to send your Kids to college, it assures they will never move beyond your level of income. If you ship all job opportunities to other countries you limit access to a liveable wage.If You use a system which cause an imbalance between this income and the costs of living, the slide quickens and indebtedness grows (endentured slavery)
'Trickle Down ' was Feudalism Invading America and enslaving 'The People'. It is the System of Monarchies and dictatorships and after nearly 30 yrs of it, it's time to Dethrone the Nobles, seize their castles and their Fifdoms.
It has amazed me it has taken this long for people to recognize the Obviousness of that Term and realize they have become American Serfs. However it does speak well of American Fortitude since it has taken this long to utterly undermine our Economic strength. But does not reflect well on our intellectual abilities and Knowledge of our Own Founding principles that it has gone on for so long!
I recognized it when it was rolled out in the'80's! What are they teaching in History Classes? To make matters Worse HW admitted he envisioned a 'New World Order'...Weren't we already the World's 'Super Power'? What type of Reorganization did he have in mind? Where did He want to Move US to on the list if not DOWN? And how did he expect to accomplish this...Through 'Trickle Down'(Holding Back Economic 'Liquidity' from the masses and only providing a Trickle as THEY saw Fit). Many of US are dying of Dehydration, and they want to suck what little 'liquidity' is left in the reservior (which we are expected to replenish for their Survival)
Trickle Down was fundementally an UNAmerican economic stradegy, One our ancestors had Escaped when they came Here. Greespan and the other Architects of this Feudalism Revival should be Prosecuted for Treason!

Taking from those who work and giving it to those who are too lazy to work just eliminates the incentive to work at all. By all means support the truly disabled, wounded veterans, and provide a stopgap for those in economic transitions. If we cannot keep what we work for, then why work at all? The Soviets and many others have proven that humans do not respond well to socialism. McCain sucks, but so does Obama. We all will have to fight hard in Congress to keep either one of these losers on a leash and avoid following the Soviets to "former superpower" status.

Jesus was a strong socialist, even a liberal.

He condemned the rich (told them to give up their money) and blessed the poor.

I can't say Obama's going to do much different from Mccain but even a slight difference and the Far Right squeals like a fucking pig? I strongly recommend that the Democrats learn from Nader's platform and ignore the rightwing motherfucking elites before this country enters a tougher Great Depression already !

Human beings have a great contradiction. They want to spread the wealth and also get rich. But 6 to 7 billion people growing to 8, 9, and 10, can only spread poverty and environmental destruction. So, peacefully reduce our human population and there will be plenty of resources for everyone.

I can't take credit for this because I found it in comments on No Quarter but it says it all.

"Dear Fellow Business Owners:

As a Business owner who employs 30 people, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barack Obama will be our next President and that my Taxes and Fees will go up in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, I figure that the Customer will have to see an increase in my fees to them of about 8%. I will also have to lay off 6 of my employees. This really bothered me as I believe we are family here and didn’t know how to choose who will have to go. So, this is what I did.

I strolled through the parking lot and found 8 Obama bumper stickers on my employees’ cars. I have decided these folks will be the first to be laid off. I can’t think of another fair way to approach this problem. If you have a better idea, let me know. I am sending this letter to all Business owners that I know.

Sincerely

Some Pie Analysis

McCain has recently argued that he wants to increase the size of the economic pie whereas Obama wants to divide it up. Even though the economic pie should not be divided up evenly regardless of it's size, it should not be made as large as possible regardless of the way it's divided up.
The republican presidential candidate also said that Obama's plan would [something like] "punish achievement". But it would really only reduce the reward for accomplishment, (which might be the lesser of two evils.)

McCain has returned to the fundamental message that Republicans have ridden to power since Reagan in 1980. Stated bluntly, it is this: "Democrats will spend all of your hard-earned money on programs to help lazy ____." They dont have to use racial epithets. When Reagan bloviated about welfare queens, everybody knew who he meant: black women. Variations of that GOP message have included 1988's "Democrats like Dukakis will let black convicts come rape your wife."

Given the reality that the main redistribution of wealth in this country has been handing ever more to the rich, the message is reprehensible. It is also racist as hell.

The state of AL returns profits to its citizens, because they are the owners of the state. Al citizens are the share holders, who are given shares from the profits of Oil. Then the national goverment taxes the citizens on their share. AL has an award system...not a Robin Hood system.

When you believe that for every action in your life, there is an equal & opposite goverment program...you must be an Obama supporter.

Sorry Folks, the answers do not lie in either one of these two. The changes we need in our Country is not what is on the mind of either. Sure they talk a good game Everybody is so side tracked by Tax Breaks, Spread the Wealth, He said, she said, he did, she did. This election will only allow the Government to get worse with its power seeking, grubby handed, Plutocracy and Kleptocracy style of Government. The problem in this Country is the Politicians. These people are educated people who say that they know more of whats best for the rest of us then we ourselves know. We stand in a time in our Country that is unlike any other span in history. You can not compare whats happening today with what happened in the 1930s. For one, our Government is a lot more Corrupt then it was then, There are people and Companies that are getting wealthier during our time of Financial problems. Though we the common people are loosing everything we have and having to make sacrifices to get by, we are allowing our Government to GIVE BILLIONS of dollars (now reaching the 1 trillion dollar mark)to those who are the educated elite of our society, so they don't loose something that they wouldn't even miss. Today we have been duped into a thing called 401K. This is supposed to be our retirements. Back in the 30s they didn't have 401k. Stock Markets will continue to go up and down, until the 401Ks have become insolvent. You see, those wealthy people are slowly draining our pockets with the stocks also. Just a small scenario: Say that we had decided to take our Social Security and invest in the stocks, we still had our 401Ks that are stock investments, Social Security would be close to insolvent right now, The money we took out of Social Security and Placed in the Markets would be gone, and the 401Ks would be gone. Where would the common person be right now. Free Enterprise will be gone.
The only way to stop this from happening is to Re-Establish our Government. There is a movement that has been started, that is called The Re-establishment Act of the People 2008. What this act will accomplish is the removal from office, all those who voted Yes on the Bailouts. It will call for independent un-biased private investigations of all the Senators and House Representatives. Any type of misconduct found will mean removal from office. Those involved in the bailout will be charged with crimes against our Country. It will restore our Government back to the Constitutional Republic that it was meant to be. It will demand the almost 1 trillion dollars in bailout money be returned promptly to the people. All Government ownership and stocks in any of these companies will become null and void. If a Company fails to return their portion of the bailout money, that Company will be seized and sold to the highest bidder within 90 days. No person presently running any of those Companies will be allowed to participate in any bidding of defaulted Companies. This is just a touch on what this Act will Accomplish.

There is only 2 ways that this Act can become Law:
1) After it is written up it has to be presented to Congress for Their approval.
(Problem I see here. More than the majority are involved in the bailout scandal, and the majority of if not all the rest will be found guilty of misconduct in some form or fashion. Therefore they will not Ratify it.)
2) After it is written up it will be circulated so that the people of this Country can read it and sign it if they agree. Once enough signatures are gained and a neutral audit has been completed to verify the signature, and to verify that the Act has been ratified by the people and is now Law, the Act will be presented to Congress, Not for their approval, but for their notification of the ratification of the ACT. If you would like to help please contact me through Alternet
Mike

Either party is going to do the minimum it can get away with to prevent "meddlesome outsiders" (the Founding Fathers' term for the public) from taking matters into there own hands. In both cases, the parties favour extreme wealth. Arguably, what distinguishes the Democrats is they're more effective at subverting effective dissent.

In the short run, the Democrats will probably inflict less pain (on American, at any rate), but will have the effect, ultimately, of prolonging our misery.

John McCain. Black humorist.

If you are an under-age-65 childless adult in most US states, are not fortunate enough to have been adjudged to be fully disabled, and are one of the 45 million Americans who do not have health insurance, there is no government program whatsoever that assures you will get necessary medical care. You can go to your ER with your inoperable colon cancer or your heart attack. You most likely couldnt get a colonoscopy or preventive and diagnostic care to head off the heart attack. You probably cant get life saving prescriptions or routine care or dental care -- even if you desperately need it. You will be treated for your emergency and shown the hospital door as quickly as possible.

If you are a FULLY DISABLED adult in Ohio today, you will need to "spend down" your "excess income" above about $600 per month in order to get Medicaid. If you are a working parent in Ohio and earn over 90 percent of the poverty standard, you earn too much to qualify for Medicaid. And God forbid you live in Mississippi or Texas. (Texas has no "spend down" provision -- if your income exceeds the barbarically low limits, you can go die.)

In contrast, the percentage of income that goes to the richest one percent of Americans has literally doubled in the last 20 years.

To talk about "socialism" in the context I have described is not only laughable, but genuinely evil. For what they have done to the poor in this country, the Republican leaderhip deserves to rot in hell.

Mc Cain & Spreading The Wealth

Spreading The Wealth as a concept has a long history in the U.S. It's only recently that the Right, beginning with Ronald Reagan, convinced a large percentage of U.S. voters that it wasn't feasible or was actually "hokey populism". But there's nothing hokey about populism and the concept of spreading the wealth. Americans have been alarmed by the growning gap between CEO and rank and file pay and the dissolution of the middle class. The gap has gotten too wide and it's time to narrow it.
On another issue; have you noticed how Obama's supporters are enthusiastic? While McCain's are glum and seem to be going along with him only because they feel they have no other choice? The only enthusiastic supporters McCain and Palin can get to a rally are the rabid racists,Muslim-haters and anti-immigrants. The rest of the diehard Republicans are staying home, watching Fox News.

I have seen the 8th ward that Obama was to have helped in Chicago...he did nothing to help those who placed their trust in him. His message of hope through wealth redistribution is not good for this country, just for Barack, and it is not being racist to say so.

After eight years of establishing and then extending America's lead as the most unequal of all industrialized countries,

This statement lacks meaning, or, rather, it's whatever you imagine it to mean.

On the otherhand, here is some homework:

The U.S. ranks ____________ highest in corporate tax rate.

The top 20% of tax payers in this country account for __________ percent of federal income tax receipts. The lowest 20% account for ___________ percent.

______________ can receive a tax refund called the EITC (by shaking down their neighbors via the ballot) even if they did not have a tax liability--i.e., they get an end-of-year gift from people who pay taxes.

A) Low-income earners
B) Mid-income earners
C) High-income earners

Focus more on your personal situation, and quit trying to figure out how to get what your fellow citizens have worked for. You'll be happier that way!

It is OK to bail out the banks in the largest socialist corporate bail out, but to actually help a citizen?

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE CANNOT PROSPER UNDER THESE CONDITONS. WE HAVE LOST MILLIONS OF JOBS, MORE THEN HALF OF OUR TAX DOLLARS GO TO THE MILITARY, WAGES ARE LOW AND FOOD AND GAS ARE HIGH. EXXON MOBIL JUST MADE THE BIGGEST PROFITS IN HISTORY. PEOPLE CAN BARELY AFFORD TO DRIVE TO THEIR SHITTY PAYING JOBS, THAT THIS IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG. SOME CITIES ACROSS THIS NATION ARE IN A DEPRESSION. 72 THOUSAND HOUSEHOLDS IN DENVER ALONE ARE HAVING THEIR UTILITIES SHUT OFF AND THIS IS A NATIONAL TREND. WATCH THE DENVER REALITY ON BILL MOYERS THE JOURNAL ON THE NET AND EDUCATE YOURSELF. ALSO THERE WAS AN INTERVIEW WITH MATT WELCH AND MICKEY EDWARDS TWO REPUBLICANS WHO DISCUSSED MCCAIN. IN 1999 - 2000 HE VOTED AS A NEOCON AGAINST BUSH AND WAS A BIG FAN OF PREEMPTIVE STRIKE SO IF YOU LIKE BUSH YOU WILL LOVE MCCAIN! WAKE UP AMERICAN THIS ELECTION IS ABOUT UP OR DOWN. It is really a depressing "Model Of Democracy" we have here
1. How come half of the population (mostly poor, lower Middle Income) think sharing the wealth is something evil? in this "overwhelmingly Christian Nation"? The same Jesus of love and compassion??!!!!
2. Why do voters allow the disgustingly dirty politics to sway them. They sway them. I mean accusation without any evidence of being a terrorist, Anti American, Racially charged rumors about being Arab.
3. I believe that more than 25% of the voters are willing to say that Obama's name is a sufficient grounds to disqualify him.

3. This is a dumb nation. The dumber candidate have a really good chance to win.

4. Some time in the foreseeable future there will be violence between the mobs. We are deeply divided and utterly stupid.

I have very little hope. You and I are going down. If not us, our children.
Partly because both parties are willing in national and local elections to use these dirty tactics and mindless ignorant (and proud of it) crowds are following like a mob. In many cases it is a mob (Sports Events? College parties? Guantanamo? Election rallies? Jerry Springer?
And some democrat voters are even dumber than many republicans

It is time to "sock it to 'em"...the top 10% that already have more than they or their families families can spend in several lifetimes and the big corporations that spend enough hiring 'loophole' tax attorneys, pricey Congressional lobbyists, and paying bribes to pay off a big chunk of our $10 Trillion debt.

Americans need and deserve some "social" services and much more compassion & consideration from our elected representatives in both houses of Congress!

And the IRS should start enforcing the legal taxation of those mega-stupid, mega 'rightous' hatred & violence spewing churches that keep trying to influence (control) our sectarian government.

the greatest number? Whatever economic or political system you favor, try fitting it into that equation. Clearly, concentrating the nation's wealth in a smaller and smaller number of hands is not having the greatest benefit for the most Americans. Neither would taking all the money from the richest and giving it to the poorest. But somewhere in between, there would be a solution that would do the most good for the most people. It's the job of our elected officials to find that solution and then enact it. Of course, neither political party is interested in that. When have you ever heard a politician talk about solving things according to doing the greatest good for the greatest number, yet that's what the "promote the general welfare" clause in the Constitution explicitly states.

it is the corporations who are getting the TRILLIONS not us. Oh there may be a few regular people who you can call parasites but compared to the corporations, it's spit on a windshield. So don't fall for this idea that there are millions out there who are parasites. The Ameircan people work harder and get less then any other developed nation. We have no protections or safety nets for anything anymore. There is no more job security and wages suck. I was making $5per hr in 72 and that was just OK. Now people are making $8 - $10. We pay taxes and get nothing in return. There will always be some who depend on a safety nets and that is what a civilized society does. There has to be some compassion for those in need and room for the small fraction who we pay for. We don't even offer people services because there are none. We don't have resources for the mentally ill because they barely exist. Should we just let them die in the gutter along with all the other growing homeless populations in this nation? Did you know that welfare was 1 per cent of the total economy? How much do you think we are paying the corporations? Watch IRAQ FOR SALE: THE WAR PROFITEERS on comcast on demand or the internet and you will see just how corrupt things are and what our young men and women have been coned into diying for. We killed almost a million men, women and children in Iraq for oil and have captured the 2nd biggest oil deposit in the world and they are telling us we need to be oil independent. Why should they want that when Exxon just made the biggest profits in history?
And remember war = profit. Why do you think Rove and the Republicans are using those touch tone machines to steal the election? Because they know that McCain will give them what they want.

Princeton University sharply criticizes the e-voting machines
Posted by: cori on Nov 1, 2008 11:14 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Vendor challenges research, says its machines are safe and reliable. With eight days to go before the presidential election, a report has been released by Princeton University and other groups that sharply criticizes the e-voting machines used in New Jersey and elsewhere as unreliable and potentially prone to hacking. The 158-page report, which was ordered by a New Jersey judge as part of an ongoing four-year legal fight over the machines, says the e-voting machines can be "easily hacked" in about seven minutes by anyone with basic computer knowledge. Such hacking activity could enable fraudulent firmware to steal votes from one candidate and give them to another, the report said. The controversy involves the Sequoia AVC Advantage 9.00H direct-recording electronic (DRE) touch-screen voting machines made by Oakland, Calif.-based Sequoia Voting Systems. The report comes amid news stories in at least three states - West Virginia, Texas and Tennessee - where voters have told local election officials that they believe the e-voting machines they used tried to "flip" their votes to other candidates. The AVC machines can be hacked by installing fraudulent software contained in a replacement chip that can be installed on the main circuit board, according to the report. Such a part replacement is very difficult to detect, it noted. Andrew Appel, a Princeton University computer science professor who is one of the authors of the report, said that such security vulnerabilities cause doubts about the accuracy and reliability of the machines. The plaintiffs, a group of public interest organizations, argue in their lawsuit against the state of New Jersey that the machines should be discarded because they can't meet state election law requirements for security and accuracy. State officials who back the machines argue that the machines are adequate for the job. The lawsuit is expected to go to trial in January, but in the meantime, the court allowed the Princeton report to be released to the public. The report gives details on how the machines could be manipulated by someone who wanted to change the results of the election, and it strongly criticizes the designs and security of the devices. At the same time, Appel said that while such a scenario is possible, "it doesn't mean that somebody is dishonest enough to do it." "Even so, it's an unpleasant place to be in to have to use these machines that are so hackable," Appel said. "Early next week, I'm going to have to go out and cast my vote on one of these machines." The problem, according to the report, is that there are many opportunities in the storage, distribution and deployment of the DRE machines where an unauthorized person could manipulate them and not be detected. "Somebody could have hacked it at any time" during those stages before an election, Appel said. Michelle Shafer, a spokeswoman for Sequoia Voting Systems, said in an e-mailed response that the company emphatically denies the conclusions of the Princeton report. In a 19-page response posted on Sequoia's Web site, the company argues that the researchers who contributed to the report removed factory security hardware from the tested machine before they performed their analyses. The Sequoia response also says that an operator panel cover was not in place when the testing was conducted, which would have made a potential attack "far less likely to succeed before they are stopped, or at minimum, detected." The Sequoia response also harshly criticizes the researchers as having an "inflammatory tone" about the company's DRE machines, while "editorializing on the wonders of paper ballots and optical scanning" as an alternative and more trusted method of voting. The company said the Princeton report includes "numerous factual errors and cases of intellectual dishonesty." "There's no perfect technology [for e-voting], but I think the consensus of computer scientists is that precinct-counted, optically scanned paper ballots is the best method"

OBAMA’S SOUL IN BRIEF

First, Obama’s voting record is to the left of Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who is an avowed socialist.

Second, it is now clear that Obama thinks it a “tragedy” that the civil rights movement did not result in redistribution of wealth (not just income), and that the very liberal Warren Court was not radical enough.

He believes we need to “break free” from the “constraints” of the Constitution regarding restrictions on governmental intrusion on individual liberties and property, that there are things the federal government “must do” for “economic and social justice.”

This guy is not just a socialist, he is a communist who wants to “change” the Constitution beyond all recognition, and he will get all the help he wants from an all-Democrat Congress.

Fight back!

A young Palestinian in a Gaza refugee camp is doing his part to get out the vote for Barack Obama. With a little help from the Internet, 24-year-old Ibrahim Abu Jayab is cold calling random American families from his parent’s home imploring them to vote Obama.

WHY WOULD PALESTINIANS (moslem refugees rejected by all mideast countries) KNOWN FOR DECADES OF CRAZY VIOLENCE AND TEACHING CHILDREN RACIST HATE OF JEWS…BE FOR OBAMA??? WELL, WHY???

When you get past all the lefty diversions, the nit picking non-issues and the required lefty profanity…here it is:

Why are thug dictators in praise of Obama?
Why are the secular Hollyweirds for Obama?

Imagine thug dictators publicly supporting JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Bush I?
It is unthinkable…
Due to the gains of secular socialism in the schools and media…such things are now of no consequence.

Parasites?

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Parasites? The overwhelming majority of Americans, the working class, are parasites because they believe in fairness? Talk about smoke and mirrors hiding the facts.

Since the 70’s, the top tax bracket for the rich has been cut in half. Capital gains taxes have MORE than been cut in half. Compensation for the top 10%, and especially the top 1% have increased hugely, while the middle class has seen a decline in income – especially over the last decade.

Have we seen a 50% reduction in taxes for the middle class? Nope. What we’ve seen is increases in FICA taxes (which are capped, so the top income earners who are already getting the aforementioned tax breaks, don’t even have to pay those on all their income…though the lower wage earners do) at the same time that we’ve seen significant reductions in benefits like health care, child care and education spending…items that the middle and lower class wage earners rely on much more heavily than the top income population, which has enough money to easily pay out of pocket for them.

Add the fact that the Internal Revenue Service estimates that it is able to accurately tax 99% of wage earners, but that they are only able to capture about 70% of the business and investment income – which flows mostly to upper class individuals and is generally not accurately reported – and you have a system that is rigged in favor of the rich. More income and dramatically lower tax rates (without even figuring in the amounts they save by “creative” income reporting, offshore accounts or tax shelters)…but McCain and his supporters say fixing that inequity is “Socialist” and “rewarding people who don’t work” who are “parasites”? Against the backdrop of taking mostly lower income wage earners tax money and giving hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out the corporations – and by extension, the rich – that’s hilarious. Especially in light of the recently reported use of at least $20 Billion of bail out money to pay bonuses to those corporations high income earners, most of whom were integral to the financial meltdown. Talk about parasites!

You think a CEO or other top 1% earner works 400 times harder than the average American worker? Elephant dung.

Speaking of corporations…more claptrap about them being “taxed at the highest tax rates in the world”. In August, the GAO released a study of taxes paid by corporations that said about two-thirds of corporations operating in the United States did not pay taxes annually from 1998 to 2005. Also, according to a study by the Treasury Department, from 2000 to 2006, an average of 2.2 percent of GDP was collected in corporate taxes. This compares to an average of 3.4 percent in other industrial countries. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects that, under current law, corporate revenues will decline to 1.9 percent of GDP by 2017.

Even Warren Buffett says the current tax system is unfair…as reported in a CNN Money.com article from June 2007. Here’s a quote “…Buffett said he makes $46 million a year in income and is only taxed at a 17.7 percent tax rate on his federal income taxes. By contrast, those who work for him, and make considerably less, pay on average about 32.9 percent in taxes – with the highest rate being 39.9%. To emphasize his point, Buffett offered $1 million to the audience member who could show that one of the nations wealthiest individuals pays a higher rate than one of their subordinates.”

Here’s another quote from Warren Buffett:
“There’s class warfare, all right, but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.”

Taxation is Authoritarian

Taking money out of the pockets of people against their will is authoritarian.

Republicans and Democrats are equally authoritarian. They just differ on what they want to spend the money on.

Neither side is talking about eliminating the civil liberty squashing programs out government is currently funding with our tax money like the drug war.

Both sides look at the American people as children, one side wants to provide for their basic needs and fatten their contributors profits, the other side largely does not care and wants to fatten their contributors profits, neither side looks at the American people as adults capable of making their own decisions and being responsible for them.

As an adult capable of being responsible for my own life, I resent the vast majority of government services and programs as they have no real benefit to me.

Why are so many of them distributing huge amounts of their wealth to but Team Obama?
A few examples:

Obama supporters could eat dinner in Los Angeles with Warren Buffett, an Obama adviser and one of history’s shrewdest investors, for $28,500, the federal limit for donations by an individual to a national party committee.

Or they could attend a “VIP reception” with the sage of Omaha for $10,000, or an “economic roundtable” for just $1,000.

A “Round Table Discussion” in Boston with Robert E. Rubin, who was Treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton (and helped repeal the Glass-Steagal Act, leading to the mortgage meltdown) and talked on the phone with Obama as the financial crisis broke out - cost $28,500.

A reception in Boston with former Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.), a possible chief of staff in an Obama White House, was offered for $500 or $2,500.

Tickets to a reception in Boston with Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), a possible secretary of defense in an Obama Cabinet, were offered for a bargain-basement $250 or $500.

A reception, policy discussion and lunch was offered in Newark, N.J., with David Cutler, Obama for America’s senior health care adviser, for $500 for a guest or $2,300 for a VIP.

A reception and discussion at Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in Washington with Neera Tanden, domestic policy director of Obama for America, was offered for $250 or $1,000.

Luncheon in New York with Dennis Ross, Special Middle East Coordinator under President Clinton — $10,000, $5,000, $2,500 or $1,000.

Reception in Belmont, Mass., with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick — $2,500, $1,000, $500 or $250.

Reception in New York with Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), Obama’s running mate — per couple $28,500, $14,250, $5,000 or $1,000.

Reception in Chicago with Michelle Obama — $28,500, $10,000 or $2,500.

LGBT reception in Chicago with Michelle Obama — $15,000, $10,000, $2,500 or $1,000.

LGBT reception in New York with Biden — $10,000.

Private dinner in Chicago with Tony Lake, Dennis Ross & Dan Shapiro — $10,000.

Reception in Palm Springs, Calif., with Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee — $1,000 or $250.

Reception in Boston with Theo Epstein, general manager of the Boston Red Sox — $2,500, $1,000, $500.

Reception in Boston with Tony Lake, Clinton’s national security adviser —$5,000 or $2,500.

Reception in Cambridge, Mass., with Tony Lake, $2,500, $1,000 or $500.

Reception and briefing in Cambridge, Mass., with campaign adviser Valerie Jarrett — $5,000 or $1,000.

Maybe you weren't on the mailing list, but that won't matter...

Falling wages for the middle and lower class are due differences in the value of currency

Why does someone in a 3rd world country get paid a couple cents to make a t-shirt yet in the U.S. they get a couple dollars?

People try to say that the standard of living is cheaper in the 3rd world but that is a lie. Food may be cheaper but the costs of electronic goods, cars, these are the same.

As long as we have different currencies with different values and people in one country get paid less to do the same work as people in another country we will have outsourcing.

We need to reinstitute tariffs to make up for the difference in wages in different countries. As long as other countries have lower minimum wages or no minimum wages there will be businesses that seek to exploit this difference to lower their expenses and increase their profits.

Our countries leaders set up these currency differences to exploit the labor of the 3rd world to make our country richer but it does come at a price of reducing the number of jobs available here that actually pay a decent wage.

Further, if our country ever starts falling behind China or the EU, our lack of manufacturing, resource extraction and refining, will bite us in the ass and make it even more difficult to catch up.

For all the scared, greedy, whining opponents of sharing

I have posted much more extensive comments elsewhere on the web. Given the space constraints here, the following may suggest my thoughts:

The Forbes 400 Richest Americans, hyper-elite of our Owner Class, are a tiny three-thousandths-of-one-percent of taxpaying households. How have they been sacrificing for a Nation At War? They have profited. In 2005 (most recent year available) the 400 reported adjusted gross incomes totaling 85.6 billion dollars -- an average of 213.9 million dollars apiece. Their incomes have increased every year for decades, but with their Wealthy-Fare gifts from Boy Bush those incomes have REALLY outstripped expectations. Note: These income figures are not the product of some left-leaning blog. They come from Forbes ("Capitalist Tool") Magazine.

Put the imbalance in everyday terms: The Forbes 400's average income of $213,900,000 is $24,400 per hour. That's not $24,400/hour for a 40 hour week, nor for an 80-hour or 120-hour workweek: It is $24,400/hour for every hour of every day, 365 1/4 days a year. It is $24,400/hour for each and every one of the hours they sleep, eat, watch movies, and sit on the potty.

Is anyone really worth $24,400 for an hour of work, much less sleep and potty-time? In such an ocean of money, if there was any genuine opportunity to rise from the middle class, half the country would be millionaires, but such is not the case: While a few money-obsessed enablers are thrown some coins, most of the middle class earns less than they did twenty years ago, and works longer to get it.

Seventy years of Con propaganda notwithstanding, the truth is that for every "lazy" person in poverty, there are dozens working two or three sub-poverty jobs just to stay a month behind on bills.

I doubt that the proportion of lazy to industrious people differs across the class spectrum, but what does show up more frequently in lower wage groups is poor physical and mental health -- problems left untreated by a for-profit healthcare system.

Speaking of "lazy", note that the top 1% owns between a third and half of all investments, and thus pockets, in those proceeds, the fruits of other people's labor. What have those investors given us in exchange? War, credit crises, crippled government: Nice work, Owners.

Spread the wealth or relish the responsibility

I thought the spread the wealth remark to Joe the Plumber was unfortunate because it wasn’t the best language to express what is being called for. It was a bit insensitive. We want the wealthy to act more responsibly toward society. They have their gold-ringed fingers firmly on the steering wheel of our economy and can throw the rest of us into the ditch, as the present financial crisis bears witness to.

Obama played into Joe’s worst fears because he made him feel vulnerable to losing the wealth he has yet to realize. Nothing worse than to jeopardize a man’s American dream.

Obama should have brandished the language of a conservative to better relate to Mr. Plumber. He might of asked Joe rhetorically, What responsible husband would balk at giving his wife and family money to live on? Conservatives relate well to the language of personal responsibility and family values.

Obama could have continued by saying something like, “We Americans belong to the same family and some of us have greater responsibilities toward other family members because of our wealth and position, just as you do toward your family as the head of your household.”

Verily, those who are taxed should feel good about their contribution to keeping our democracy well oiled and taken care of like the family car.

How right you are. If we paid teachers and educators a fraction of what we pay "ball players" and what do we call them? ("PROFESSIONAL BALL PLAYERS", if we paid them just tiny fraction, like $100,000- -$150,000 a year, with strict two year mandatory re-certification, and poured another fraction of that same money into new teaching techniques, books, and curriculum, we wouldn't have a nation of dumb down individuals. Dumb-downed with I-pods, video games, DVD, cell phone with cameras, and other media over-loads, reality TV shows and other non-substantive TV PROGRAMING, and why is it called TV PROGRAMING? TO PROGRAM THE MIND!!!!!! Think about it! When The Great Depression hit, there were no TV SETS, NO TV PROGRAMING, No I-PODS, COMPUTERS, and other media garbage. People had to rely on their wits. There was a reference and high regard for education, reading, books and the arts and culture. GOD HELP US ALL, May we Wake Up Soon! Thank God not all of us are still dreaming, and in Bush induced comas.

We wouldn't have dreamed of entertaining someone like Sarah Palin FOR THE OVAL OFFICE, not for a minute. The Republican Party would have rejected her early on. It boggles the mind, the stupidity THAT CONTINUES!
Only GOD can intervene in this stupidity.

Well, well, well, America is finally waking up to the fact that they've been duped for generations. We were wondering how long it would take! Fed all that "reds under the bed" bulldust to keep them in their places, so that they wouldn't have the temerity to ask for basic human living conditions. And all the while, they have been trained to worship and genuflect to the very rich who have smiled back at them from TV, glossy magazines, and newspapers, living high at their expense. Certain exceptions to this, like the late and great philanthropist Paul Newman, are very rare. They have allowed themselves to be taxed hard by comparison, yet were never afforded any of the benefits that should have accrued from their sacrifice. Australia is not perfect, we have our own skeletons under the bed, not the least being the disgraceful way we have in the past treated our indigenous Australians, but it remains a fact that I grew up in a country where everyone, if they could not afford to pay for it, has had free hospital, medical and dental care immediately available to them from birth, and I am past 60. No one dies here because they cannot afford an operation. In fact, if someone has to wait too long in a corridor on an ambulance trolley there is a public outcry and national television covers the story! And rightly so. We were amazed when we heard Bill Clinton say that September 11 would never have happened if America was not the greatest nation on earth, if they were not the envy of the world. Whatever the reason September 11 happened, my guess is it sure had nothing to do with America being so perfect a nation, the "envy of the world". Well, guess what? You are a wonderful people, and we love you to bits. We have fought alongside you all, of every colour, race and creed, and we have died in wars with you. You have a wonderful free, multicultural society. But there is a lot of sorting out to do. A lot of inequalities need redressing over there. And we Australians do not envy you your system of government. We have a much better, more stable one over here. It's time for you all to emulate us, get a little humility, and vote for Barack Obama, the only man who can save your nation, and give Americans the true American dream. I suppose it's too much to ask for that you get rid of the gun-toting cowboy image. It's too much too soon, I suppose. But we go to bed over here each night in a much much safer continent. And we do not envy you your lack of nightly repose.

I don't give a damn. I'm not voting for Launchpad McCain or his Lipsticked Pitt Bull. They have no new ideas. They can't even implement old ideas in a way that will benefit me. Both Candidates voted to take MY tax money and give it to a bunch of rich assholes so they could go on spa weekends. Both Candidates voted for wiping their ass with the Constitution via the last FISA vote.

I'm not happy with either of them. But I'd rather have the young idealist who has a plan to fix the nation that McCain helped run into the damned ground than the cantankerous old Washington insider and his religious wackjob barbie doll.

As far as all this 'socialism' talk, call me a socialist if you want. I don't care because your opinion matters about as much to me as any other cow.

It's about time my government started to actually benefit me in some way instead of pissing my hard earned tax money away and giving tax breaks to Exxon, Haliburton, Blackwater, Northrope Grummond and Sarah Palin's bullshit crab mating study. I'm tired of the lies. I'm tired of the delusions. I'm tired of the mudslinging. I want this damned election to be over with and I want my government to realize that they are in place to SERVE me. They are glorified civil servants, nothing more. There was a time when politicians recognized that but when Florida allowed Bush to steal an election they saw their chance to grab power.

We don't need another four years of failed economic, social, military, intelligence and emergency preparation policies which is exactly what we'll get with John McCain.

As a man who lived in Germany for 8 years & worked on most of the Military bases in Europe taking family photographs I came to very much appreciate the superior system of Governing in Germany. Socialism as practiced in Germany truly was/is a Government "Of the people, by the people & for the people." Nothing like the USA's Capitalist system which should really be defined as Consumerism " Only of the wealthy, only by the wealthy & only for the wealthy."
If you wish to own a dog in Germany the dog MUST attend obedience school rather than for lack of obedience training and neglectful ownership, mauling small children while running around loose as in the USA. German leash laws ARE strictly enforced. A young person wishing to have the privilege of driving must attend driving school for 6 months to attain this privilege and will not receive a license until age 18 and therefore truly appreciates the privilege as opposed to offering this privilege to potential automobile killing 14-16 year old's with no training or experience. Young Germans are far superior drivers who respect the rules of the road & their fellow drivers. If you wish to own a gun or to hunt you must attend a gun safety class which prevents the many hunting accidents(think Dick Chaney) including deaths here in the USA. Higher Education is cost free for anyone who qualifies and maintains good grades(a B (2 in Germany) average). EVERYONE has full health care and also the potential for a quality retirement pension and as a result the youth in Germany have HOPE for their futures rather than possibly choosing to join a Gang because they see no hope for the future like many of the youth here in the USA(Without Hope My People Perish). Germany also has one of the FAIREST taxation systems in the world, strong Unions, a decent minimum wage, and fair wages for all adults with full health benefits including paid leave while convalescing from major illness or maternity. I believe anyone reading this GETS THE IDEA.

This Socialism garbage as harped upon by the out of touch Republicans has gotten old and stale and I'm tired of hearing how America is the Greatest as we don't even come close, in any respect.

I also wish to discuss what a truly class act campaign Senator Obama and his staff have run. With all the low life fear and smear crap that the McCain campaign keeps throwing on the wall I'm surprised and in admiration that no one from his staff has brought up the fact that Mr. family values McCain was/is a fornicator and an Adulterer while in pursuit of his millionaire 2nd Trophy Wife who as a drug addict lied about stealing her pills from her charity. In addition they have failed to mention Senator McCain's palling around with Mr. Keating, with whom Senator McCain's wife had business dealings. Mr. Keating who due to his dishonesty and greed brought down the Savings & Loan banking system leading to the loss of my deceased wife's Grandmother losing her entire life's savings as acquired by she and her lifelong hard working husband. And how about Senator McCain's palling around with Republican G. Gordon Liddy of Watergate fame who was not only a convicted liar, cheat and thief but was guilty of planning future political assassinations.

If you want a succinct description of these idiot single issue Republicans (Pharisees)I give you the host of the 700 club, a so called Christian who suggested assassinating Hugo Chavez. And also Dennis Rader (The BTK serial killer from Oklahoma) who believed he was a Saved, Born Again Evangelical who was destined for Heaven.

Remember we are to Love "ALL" Our Fellow Men(Women) As We Love Ourselves and that includes you Senator McCain and Govenor Palen. My sincere thanks to Senator Obama and his staff for their class act campaign. JND

Spread the wealth, no wonder Rupert Murdoch is spreading a bit of dissention albeit through The Times, elderly Obama Aunt found, then a full page scaremongering in The Daily Telegraph, Australian version, which said Obama had not mentioned 'Australia' once in his campaign but that John McCain had and then the CNN picture scanner, Rupert Murdoch says World Economy will nose-dive if Barrack Obama wins Presidency, or words to that effect.

It will be wonderful to see the Murdoch empire dissolve right before his eyes as much of it is used in 'spreading the wealth'.

Keep going Obama there are hundred of millions of converts out here in the big wide world most especially in the Sudan and the Congo who could do with a small portion of that 'wealth spreading'. Clearly there are many more countries and people but that is just to name a few. Many of us in so-called democratic countries are living below the accepted poverty line, myself included.

Thank you for saying the word. We can make a difference it just takes people power and the knowledge that each of us can make a small change which in turn becomes a major change. But most importantly never ever give up no matter what the odds and no matter what is thrown at one.

Josephine Wadlow-Evans

WHAT IF THIS WAS YOUR SITUATION... this is a situation, of a female, Elderly-Disabled:
The Annual Costs, of Living for her are: Heating: $3,500.00
Rent: 4,080.00
Electricity: 3,000.00
Trash: 230.00
Phone: 920.00
Water: 400.00
--------------------
$12,130.00 Total Living Expenses

THIS COST, DOESN'T INCLUDE ANY AMOUNTS OF
MONEY FOR FOOD / TRANSPORTATION / CO-PAYMENTS
ON MEDICAL CARE - MEDS, ETC.

Now, Here's the Bigee:
The Lady's Income is: $8,100.00 Annually
(Fixed Income)

YEAH, SOMEONE NEEDS TO SPREAD THE WEALTH !!

But, Where's the Wealth ??
The National Debt is Trillions of Dollars, already !!

This is a female, born with a Birth Brain-Defect... went 61 years, Without the Proper
Medicine, then had the proper level of medicine, & the Brain Defect... was Healed...
the Cells of the Brain, Replenished-Themselves,
& her health has improved, somewhat... but for
those 61 years, she was Classified as Developmentally Impaired...
At age 60 she was placed on Homehealth.
Still with a Classification of Developmentally Disabled, the Homehealth Agency, "Dismissed this Female, from the Services of the Home Healthcare"... simply, because She was Willing to Submit Her Medical Information, to a U.S. Congress Leader, who is a Physician, who delivers babies, & the information, reveals certain information, that Might Be Helpful, in Prevention of Birth Defects.
The Homehealth Team, may not realize it, but IT IS "ONLY THRU THE MEDICARE INSURANCE COVERAGE THAT ...THEY WERE ... EARNING A LIVING, BEING PAID: WAGES / SALARY"... & the
female, was Providing for their Health / Welfare, etc... for them & their families.
Just for trying to do a kind deed, & to improve the lives of Unborn / Born Infants, this female, is Now, Without Home Healthcare Maintenance... because, as the Nurse, put it,
"we might lose our nursing license, since this action took place, by this female".
Can you feature, a Semi-skilled Nurse, having sufficient authority, to Ruin the Life, of a
Female, who is Classified as: Developmentally-Disabled, since birth... finds improvement to her health, at the age of 63... when she's almost to old, to be "Gainfully Imployed" ??
What kind of World, do we live in, that the U.S. Citizens, who are of the "Golden Years", are Forced to Live a Life, "not so Golden"...
I am familiar with the life of this female, & she's a lady, who Always has Enough to Share, with a Neighbor / a Friend, who has a Need, but then... With a Lot More Expenses, than Income... who helps her with expenses?
Certainly Not the Government... It's Her Neighbors, who ... help her, when they can... & in turn... she'll take them, a Hot Meal, or a Freshly Baked Pie... or sew a quilt for them, & whatever else, that she sees, that they don't have.
This woman, shops for bargains, bargains where there is much in a case or box... the Most for the Money... at as much discount as she can get.. & Always has Enough to Share...
SUCH IS LIFE, FOR THE LOW-INCOME IN AMERICA !!

Make the rich work harder

The problem with our current system is that some of the rich aren't working hard enough to make the wealth the rest of us need.

For example, a recent survey found that in certain, average, American neighborhood (which just happens to be mine) not one of the households has a single 42-inch wide-screen TV with surround sound.

Obama has made it clear that the rich have an obligation to work for the rest of us. Now he needs form a cabinet-level Office of Perpetual Servitude to make sure they are making wealth at a sufficient, federally-mandated rate.

Get cracking, rich. We're waiting for our checks.

In 2000, the Republican Party offered up a candidate, George W. Bush, and said "He's the best we've got." The American People then elected him (by accident, as it turned out, but let's not go there). Bush then became arguably the worst president in US history. Eight years later, the Republican Party then offered the American People John McCain, a man who, by their own admission, is worse than Bush. After all, they had a chance to make him the nominee in 2000, but chose Bush instead. They laid 'em side by side, looked at both, and said "Bush is better than McCain." Now, imagine that you are out shopping for a pair of shoes and you say to the clerk "What's the best shoe you've got for my needs?" The clerk tells you, "Well, the very best is Brand X's #1 model right here." You buy them, take them home, and they suck in every way. For eight months, you wear these things and every frickin' day your feet are screaming at you. Your arches collapse, the sole is coming apart, the laces break, and the stitching is dissolving; there isn't one--even one--thing that you can say positive about the shoes. Finally, you decide to go back to the shoe store and you say "I tried Brand X's #1 model, and it sucked in every way." The clerk looks at you and says, "Well then, let me recommend that you try Brand X's #2 model. It isn't as good as the #1 model, but obviously #1 isn't working out for you, so maybe this will be different somehow." You then ask him how, exactly, that's possible, and he can't really come up with anything specific, except to tell you how awful Brand Y is. Would you buy Brand X's #2 shoe?? I wouldn't. And if you wouldn't either, then...well, you figure it out.

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." I've been reading this Marx horsesh*t since high school, and it always strikes a sour note with me. The world doesn't owe me a living. Anyone who believes in Mr. Karl Marx Obama's "spreading the wealth" concept is nothing but a parasite. A leech. A tapeworm in the guts of the American Dream. Get some ambition of your own, for God's sake! I'm not rich. I just applied to be a greeter or some other hourly job at WalMart. You make more money than I do. Will you share your wealth with me? Do I want you to? Of course not. That would make me just another leech in the pond. Obama supporters are parasites, opportunists, all. I find it hard to believe that I signed up for this drivel. Gee, I know I'm not supposed to get on here and hurt your delicate little feelings, but the tenor of the articles I read here hurt my sense of fairness, of common sense, of what I thought Americans were supposed to be. Marxist parasites? Never! Where are the self-sufficient Americans here?
Ptui!

You are probably going to read the following 2 items here for the first time.

First of all, Bush was right about the WMDs in Iraq. The US Military has recently completed moving some several thousand metric tonnes of "Yellowcake" (enriched uranium) that the Iraqi didn't have, from the place where they didn't hide it, to Canada for the production of electric power. Oh. I forgot. Yellowcake is also used in the production of Plutonium. The stuff of atomic explosives. But there were no WMDs under way in Iraq. Remember. You've been told that by the Dems for a long time. Believe it. No WMDs in Iraq.

Second item: The British press, unlike the US press, has informed the UK that the Surge has succeeded. We have won in Iraq. But wait! You didn't hear it on CNN or ABC or CBS! Maybe on NBC as a small item, or perhaps on Fox which isn't totally under Liberal control. But you didn't hear it from any of the major news outlets. Uh... in the USA. So since it wasn't reported here, it didn't happen. Forget I told you.

By the way.. The fall of Fannie May and Freddie Mac began during the Clinton administration. It is well documented. But everybody from the Liberal side is telling you how bad Bush is for causing it.

And the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy are real, too. And divvying up Joe the Plumber's vast fortunes is going to make a lot of difference in your income that you don't make because you don't have a job because you're a lazy a$$ seventh-generation Welfare recipient.

But you won't ever read this, so you won't be offended, because you're too damn lazy to make the money for your own computer, and too stupid to know that you can use public computers at the library. You know. The big building with lots of books?

Feh.

Progressive taxes are Marxist!...ummm...errr...Rooseveltist?

"It is possible to be a master in false philosophy, easier, in fact, than to be a master in the truth, because a false philosophy can be made as simple and consistent as one pleases."
George Santayana

You know those horrible progressive taxes? They were supported by that noted Marxist (and avowed hero of John McCain) Teddy Roosevelt.

Please remember that the "Socialist/Marxist" policies of Obama's that you despise, would only return the tax rates to those under Clinton (when the rich were doing just fine, thanks!) and were substantially higher under Ronald Reagan. (I guess that makes Ronnie a Marxist/Socialist, huh?)

Here's what Teddy said:
"At many stages in the advance of humanity, this conflict between the men who possess more than they have earned and the men who have earned more than they possess is the central condition of progress. In our day it appears as the struggle of freemen to gain and hold the right of self-government as against the special interests, who twist the methods of free government into machinery for defeating the popular will. At every stage, and under all circumstances, the essence of the struggle is to equalize opportunity, destroy privilege, and give to the life and citizenship of every individual the highest possible value both to himself and to the commonwealth......

"No man should receive a dollar unless that dollar has been fairly earned. Every dollar received should represent a dollar's worth of service rendered, not gambling in stocks, but service rendered. The really big fortune, the swollen fortune, by the mere fact of its size, acquires qualities which differentiate it in kind as well as in degree from what is possessed by men of relatively small means. Therefore, I believe in a graduated income tax on big fortunes, and in another tax which is far more easily collected and far more effective, a graduated inheritance tax on big fortunes, properly safeguarded against evasion, and increasing rapidly in amount with the size of the estate." (I can provide a link if requested)

I'm not surprised that many of the people here support McCain and Palin...since their grasp of reality, history and knowledge in general is equally bad...although, their "Truthiness" is astoundingly similar.
Feh!

My problem with socialism

I'm 25 years old. Yes, I live in Ohio. I'm not really familiar with the anti-socialism propaganda, that is, I don't really remember it. Yet I am very strongly opposed to socialism because I don't believe in our government. I don't believe they have the ability to handle the responsibility thats placed on a government in a socialist society. They can't handle social security, or medicare... those programs are circling the drain as we speek. What gives anybody the confidence that, even though medicare/medicade is a humongous mess, the government can handle being in charge of ALL healthcare in this country?

I believe that socialism and even communism can work, just not in this country. There are far too many greedy, power hungry people here. That is never going to change. I don't believe in capitolism either. I really don't know what's right for the U.S., but I do know one thing. There is a problem. And it starts with each and every one of us.

We can't go around blaming all our problems on our government. The idea of personal responsibility is basicly laughed at in this country. We're losing jobs because we charge too much money for our labor. We're fat because we eat too much. We're stupid because everytime a school levy appers on the ballot we think "I don't want to pay taxes". John McCain is not going to destroy the country, Barack Obama is not going to save it, and vice-versa. Believe it or not, the president doesn't have all that much power. The change this country needs cannot come from just one person. There needs to be a fundimental shift in the psyche of every single person in this country. This is not something the government can do.

When McCluck began saying "spread the wealth" as if that's a negative, I thought, my god, most Americans don't know the meaning of socialism, not that we haven't had it since Soc. Sec., unemployment ins.. veterans' benefits--when we had them--and the bailout of $700 billion--which most of us don't even know how to count to--who are these supposedly educated people who supposedly run our government, and McCluck who has been one of them for 26 yrs. and in his own words, voted with Dumbya 90% of the time? To the majority of Americans, "spread the wealth" sounds like a good thing since they've lost jobs and homes and money.

If I ever have to hear Joe the plumber again, I'll hit my tv; if I ever hear McCluck say, my friends, I'll vomit! Who ARE his friends?

Face it, folks, the Republicans are in for several years of soul searching. I'm sure not if all Republicans think like John or Sarah, and we haven't heard from some of the more moderate voices of logic from you, but if they want to reclaim some of the lustre, we may not elect a Republican president perhaps for a generation.
First, they must admit their mistakes, and they were numerous. Second, you must forget about your saint, Reagan, and design a new course of economic bliss for the nation.
Third, you must change your racially-tinged politics of fear. Not all of us are "welfare queens" or a bunch of "Muslims" and "Willie Horton"s. Got it? No more name calling. Act like adults. I know you can do it.
Fourth, find a way to seperate religion from politics. The two do not mix in mdern times. It's like mixing oil with water; and the two cannot mesh. There IS a place for religion, but if you mix it volatile American politics, you get a combustible blend of emotionally-charged rhetoric that only divides the populace-and nothing gets solved except a politics based on beliefs or faith. Faith only gets you so far when people wre unemployed and bankrupt.
Fifth, promote the moderate side-where is your "liberal" side, socially speaking? Is there such a thing as a "liberal" Republican? Are ALL of you THAT conservative?
Democrats have some conservative ideas, but we like to hear from the progressive side of conservative thought. It wasn't pronounced in Bush I and II, Reagan, or Nixon.
For now you have a idealogical generational gap and it's unclear if you all can continue trudging down that conservative road as the aforementioned presidents and the kind of conservative slant John McCain and Sarah Palin endorse.
Finally, I'm not conservative. I have nothing against Republicans, but if you want to become popular again, you have to do a Barack and bring about the change we need. You might have lost this election, but you have no one to blame but-just look in the mirror; the party's over.

Yes, I'm new to this website and I want to thank you for a huge belly laugh I got from reading some of your stories and comments. I have been a Democrat most of my adult life and I can not agree with the direction this party is going. This is not the party of JFK! What happened to "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Name one thing that the government runs well? It's not SS, Medicare, Homeland Security, Schools or the Post Office! I also disagree that America doesn't have a problem with "Distribution of Wealth". The people I talk to don't like it one darn bit! I WANT to decide where my money goes not the government! As I said before the government can't run anything very well. I would rather give to charities that I know the money I'm giving is actually helping someone and not being wasted. And yes, I do consider myself to be one of those evil conservatives that so many of you have been writing about. And we are not going anywhere! We will be strong again!

income people. American treasury needs the money. However, I fear with the usual suspects in tow like Volcker and Rubin and Summers, Obama will bring back Clintonomics and not a new New Deal or a new Fair Deal or a new Great Society but the same old same old Raw Deal offered by Republicans and Republicans Lite (DLC) since 1981.
