Why It's Hard to Change People's Minds
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest headlines via email.
Entwined in Twain's train of thought, is an implicit -- and important -- distinction: the difference between being uninformed and being misinformed.
Today, there's scholarship to back up Twain's theory that being ignorant isn't as troublesome as being certain about something that "just ain't so."
Ignorance can be educated. But what's the antidote to misinformation? Correct information?
Not exactly -- according to political scientists Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler, co-authors of one of the few academic studies on the subject, "When Corrections Fail: The persistence of political misperceptions."
While it may seem like common sense to think misinformation can be countered by giving people the real 411, Nyhan and Reifler's research indicates that correct information often fails to reduce misperceptions among the ideologically-committed, particularly doctrinaire conservatives.
That's something many readers of this column understand intuitively after having seen false claims like Obama-is-a-Muslim refuted over and over again and yet, unbelievably, somehow manages to persist.
There's lots of research on citizen ignorance but there's only a handful of studies that focus on misinformation and the effect it has on political opinions. Nyhan and Reifler's work adds to what Yale University political scientist Robert Bullock has found: it's possible to correct and change misinformed political opinions, but the truth (small 't') ain't enough.
In Bullock's experimental study, participants were shown the transcript for an ad created by a pro-choice group opposing the Supreme Court nomination of John Roberts. The ad falsely accused Roberts of "supporting violent fringe groups and a convicted clinic bomber."
What Bullock found was that 56 percent of the Democratic participants disapproved of Roberts before hearing the misinformation. After seeing the attack ad, it jumped to 80 percent.
When they were shown an ad that refuted the misinformation and were also told the pro-choice group had withdrawn the original ad, the disapproval rating didn't drop back down to 56 percent but to 72 percent.
Nyhan and Reifler conducted a series of studies where subjects were presented with mock news articles on "hot button" issues that included demonstrably false assertions like: Iraq possessed WMD immediately before the U.S. invasion. Tax cuts lead to economic growth. Bush banned stem cell research, as Sens. Kerry and Kennedy claimed during the 2004 presidential campaign.
With the Iraq-possessed-WMD-immediately-before-the-invasion assertion, participants were shown mock news articles supporting the unfounded Bush administration claim and then provided the refutation by way of the Duelfer Report, which authoritatively details the documented lack of WMD, or even an active production program, in Iraq just before the invasion.
But instead of changing the minds of ideologically-committed war-backers, Nyhan and Reifler found a "backfire effect," in which Iraq invasion-supporters only slightly modified their view without letting go of the misinformation by saying "Saddam Hussein was able to hide or destroy these weapons right before U.S. forces arrived." Sigh.
Nyhan and Reifler attribute that kind of "thinking" to the affects of "motivated reasoning," which can distort how people process information.
"As a result (of motivated reasoning), the corrections fail to reduce misperceptions for the most committed participants. Even worse, they actually strengthen misperceptions among ideological subgroups."
Now you know why those back-and-forth on-line debates so often prove to be fruitless. Unfortunately, neither Bullock, Nyhan, or Reifler suggest a way to successfully counter misinformation clung to by those who hold their political opinions with an air of certitude.
Washington Post columnist Shankar Vedantam suggests wrapping refutations in language that enhances the self-esteem of the misinformed.
Whatever you do, just don't forget Twain's timeless advice: "tell the truth or trump -- but get the trick."

If I say that there is a non-partisan report which details that there were never any WMD's in Iraq - is the failure to understand on the part of those that continue to support this war due to:
(1) Mass Schizophrenia - because of an unwillingness to confront the reality because emotionally and intellectually they cannot confront it?
(2) Acknowledging the reality - this nation invaded a sovereign nation based on lies, over 4,000 Americans dead, 100,000 wounded, 2 million Iraqi's displaced from home and country, at least 500,000 dead or wounded Iraqi, a totally bungled war because of OIL!
(3) Unwillingness to admit that this executive lied to get into office and once there swindled the country aided and abetted by a Congress that refused to do their job!
Do we as Americans not talk openly and honestly, admitting the injustice done to all of us, after which just maybe we can heal. Or do we as Americans let the injustices and the pent up frustration fester like a raisin in the sun?

The exact opposite of the course's intention.
One case in point. The Voting Rights March in 1965 in Selma? The class viewed the footage of peaceful black demonstrators attempting to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge, only to be turned back and beaten down by white police officers on horseback carrying clubs, chains, and so on.
I remember one white student writing that the "problem" with Selma was that the black activists were inherently violent because of their membership in the Nation of Islam.
And, yep, he was in class that week, he saw the footage that showed unmistakeably that the violence was committed by white police. Years later, I still wonder how much energy his brain had to expend to flip that narrative around.
The unpleasant truth: ideology beats facts.

What the study authors appear to say is that the belief that tax cuts increase revenue (probably on the part of the tax collector, or government) is an unsubstantiated belief that is "contraindicated by the best available evidence," though they do not refer to it as "demonstrably incorrect" as the do the idea that Bush banned stem cell research.
What they seem to be addressing, in other words, is the "Laffer curve" idea that lowering tax rates can increase government revenue. Increasing taxes eventually does lead to decreased government revenue, and at that point, lowering taxes would increase it. The Laffer curve is two-sided, however, and most economists think that the government currently operates on the left side, where decreasing tax rates also decreases revenue. On these grounds, the idea can be called a misconception.
Government revenue does not equal economic growth, however. Those who wish to argue against the idea that tax cuts lead to economic growth should not attempt to use this study or the authority of its authors to make their case. They only say that cutting taxes would probably not cause enough growth to increase government revenue in the current American context. However, I hope most of us can agree that the government doesn't really need more money (it was big under Clinton, and Bush made it even bigger); it just needs to spend the money differently.

The question I wonder about is, why do some people have trouble being brain washed? People like Winston in Orwell's 1984 could see the discrepancies.
I have given thought that there are people that are faith based logical. They tend to put faith in their leaders, while others need more than faith to follow a leader, dogma, or ideology. There are people with enslaved minds. It is mentally lazy to follow the dogma. You have to be mentally energetic to think for your self. When you subscribe to an ideology, you can appear smart without thinking, instead of thinking your way to being smart. You have to let go of your self-esteem to admit that everything you know is wrong.

There is no discussion of giving women equal rights and opportunities whether she chooses to be a housewife and raise her kids versus going into the career world and being someone special. Yes, both sides have their pluses and minuses. And what about men? Why can't they also choose to be house husbands or go to work? And what about men getting to wear what they want? Women can wear just about anything men can wear but not vice versa. If a guy wears short shorts with his legs shaved and showing or even wearing tights, he's persecuted and called "gay". If more men were given the opportunity to wear what women wear, they would eventually understand and realize a lot of trouble women go through to look attractive. Moreover, in the long run, more of these otherwise indifferent macho egotistical maniacal minded men would sympathize and try to work out the issues peacefully with their female partners (girlfriend or wife) even on the issue of whether or not to terminate pregnancy.
Just like the misuse of the words "conservative" and "liberal", these same intolerant men and women misuse the word "gay". If society would tear down its wall of intolerance, social issues such as these wouldn't keep killing us all.
Until we either infuse BASIC INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS into the educational curriculm or put forth BICS into plenty of free adult education offerings or whatever, these kinds of divisions will keep crippling men and women alike.

Everyone's brain contains a Thinker and a Prover. What the Thinker thinks, the Prover proves.
To put it another way, individuals hold beliefs for non-rational reasons, and then put their intelligence to the job of proving those beliefs true, rather than determining whether they are true.

āIgnorance is curable, Stupidity is forever.ā
I guess we must now add the corollary. . .
Being misinformed is a grey area in between?
It is interesting that the study found that both the left and the right suffer from being incurably misinformed, but that the conservatives are noticeably more incurable. I know this is an well observed truism in America, but to see it academically verified is... well... Depressing.
Why depressing? Because there are way too many of them at this historically dangerous moment for our nation. Their misinformed/ignorance is being purposefully manipulated for the profit to the very few, to their voting their own self-destruction, which is destroying us all in the process.

I am a student of psychology. It seems to me, that people need cognitive therapy for seeing reality. The modern conservative needs to go through rehabilitation to over come the poison that has filled their heads. They are completely unable to think for themselves. The mental laziness makes it easy to subscribe to false doctrines and ideologies. There is an element of learned violence. They take aggression out on people who refuse to agree with their warped vision of the world. This seems to be what the problem has been with American foreign policies for a long time. You can't change peoples minds with a bullet or bomb. The occupation of foreign lands only increases the hatred toward Americans.
I try simple and understandable methods in changing peoples minds.
Why are you jealous of what poor people get and feel sorry for the rich, who does not need or want your sympathy?
Many years ago, I was told by a Republican that I would make more money by taking a wage cut. That did it for me. I have been a liberal ever since.
Don't ague minutia with conservatives. Show them the irony of their thinking. In cognitive therapy, you use "what if" statement to get points across. Let the express the logic of their view points. Ask them questions concerning their logic. Make them think! They are not use to doing that. Once they start thinking, a chance of reality to sink in, but when they express violence and hatred in their view points, it is time to leave them alone. Their emotions will interfere with any thinking process.
