An e-mail that began as a rallying cry from a lone journalist to an influential circle of friends to protest the U.S. government bailout of Wall Street has ignited a national day of street protests. Some demonstrators plan to dump their rubbish in front of the bronze bull sculpture near Wall Street in downtown Manhattan Thursday.

"People are going to bring their own personal junk that they think is worth as much as the junk financial instruments that the government is proposing to buy from the Wall Street banks," says Andrew Boyd, an activist and freelance online-video artist for nonprofit groups in Manhattan. "We're hoping that people show up with their 8-track cassette collections, their old Spice Girl CDs, their surf boards that got bit by sharks and old Enron stock certificates."

Boyd is just one of thousands of Americans from all over the political spectrum who the Bush Administration has angered with its vague proposal to hand $700 billion over to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to restore U.S. financial markets' health. That anger has manifested itself online through e-mail, web sites and other online chatter, with one site, BuyMyShitPile.com, going rapidly viral this week. The site, a parody of the dire financial situation, is what is inspiring the self-organizing group of activists to show up in downtown Manhattan Thursday evening with all their junk. They hope to make their simmering fury palpable to Wall Streeters getting off work.

"Why should people who made financially imprudent decisions be rewarded?" asks Boyd, who is best known for founding the political protest theater group Billionaires For Bush. "It's our hard-earned tax dollars, and we're being asked to bail these guys out at the same time as this locks out all the things that we want for the future."

Boyd's is one of many voices of frustration. Other people's anger spilled out online, which in turn, is fueling the planned protests' momentum.

Arun Gupta, a 43-year-old freelance journalist in Manhattan, is someone else who was so upset by unfolding events that he was moved to action.

"I've been spending a lot of time reading about the intensifying crisis and the bailout plan," he says. "The more I read, the more outraged and flabbergasted I was: It became clear to me that this was the financial equivalent of the Sept. 11 attacks."

He was so upset that he banged out a passionately worded 629-word e-mail on his laptop Sunday afternoon urging his friends -- and anyone else who would listen -- to show up at the southern tip of Manhattan late Thursday afternoon to demonstrate. He says that he's never organized a protest before in his life.

"This week the White House is going to try to push through the biggest robbery in world history with nary a stitch of debate, to bail out the Wall Street bastards who created this economic apocalypse in the first place," he wrote. "This is the financial equivalent of September 11. They think, just like with the Patriot Act, they can use the shock to force through the "therapy," and we'll just roll over!"

He added:

Think about it: They said providing health care for 9 million children, perhaps costing $6 billion a year, was too expensive, but there's evidently no sum of money large enough that will sate the Wall Street pigs. If this passes, forget about any money for environmental protection, to counter global warming, for education, for national healthcare, to rebuild our decaying infrastructure, for alternative energy.

This is a historic moment. We need to act now while we can influence the debate. Let's demonstrate this Thursday at 4 p.m. in Wall Street (see below).

The e-mail ricocheted through the electronic ecosystem faster than the implosion of Wall Street itself, tapping into and riding the frisson of resentment among Americans at this monumental financial foul-up.

"I wrote up an e-mail Sunday night, and I sat on it." he says. "I was a bit hesitant because I'm not an organizer, I'm a journalist, but I also think that things have to be done in the world."

He said that he sent it out to best-selling author Naomi Klein, who posted it to her website, and sent it out to her e-mail list. Then TrueMajority, a 700,000 member activist group headed by Ben and Jerry's co-founder Ben Cohen, sent out an action alert the next day.

TrueMajority is making a "protest kit" available on its web site with instructions for groups who are interested on how to organize a rally. One of the instructions is to bring cell phones to the protest, and to have protesters simultaneously call their members of Congress. The site has also put up a web page that enables people to find an event near them by ZIP code.

"This was a convergence of everyone having the same thought at the same time," says Matt Holland, TrueMajority's online director.

He says everybody he knew had received Gupta's e-mail at least three times from different people. It's also been widely circulated on blogs.

Holland says that Gupta's language just taps into "the strength of the emotion" that many Americans are feeling right now. TrueMajority's members themselves have made 20,000 phone calls to Congress, he says. Members report the calls that they made through the group's website.

"Everybody is just incredibly pissed off about this, and if there is a place and time for them to express themselves, they're going to do it," he says.

Congressional lawmakers have expressed frustration and skepticism over Treasury's proposal, although they won a concession about CEO pay Wednesday afternoon. President Bush is scheduled to address the nation about the bailout plan 9 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday, and John McCain has asked Barack Obama to agree to cancel Friday's presidential debate so that they could both work with the administration to hammer out an agreement.

In the meantime, a proposal to add several restrictions on the package from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) has gained traction online. He's asked Americans to sign onto the petition, and he intends to present it to Paulson. The senator's office reported Wednesday that 8,000 people signed the petition within the first 24 hours. Another sign that the petition gained widespread notice: "Bernie Sanders," was one of the most-searched-for terms on Google Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, a long list of economists from the nation's top universities sent a letter to congressional leaders voicing their concerns about the too-speedy passage of any bailout package.

They said that they were most concerned about the plan's fundamental fairness and its ambiguity.

The bailout has made Americans mad enough to protest in the streets like they did after Bush attacked Iraq.

What? There were no protests back then?

Never mind.

That road, by the way, sooner than we think, perhaps, to be a Toll Road, owned, operated and governed by such as Goldman Sach, Halliburton or others.

Don't forget: this is still all about privatization.

And where were these same people when Main Street needed help? We the people really need to unite long term and not just show up on the last minute on a rare occasion. At this point, bailout or none, the long term damage to Main Street is done while Wall $treet will still be getting its bailouts via backdoor just the same way Dubai faced public outcry at first and was able to circumvent afterwards.

So, by reforming Chapter 11 bankruptcy for individuals to make it harder for them to get out from under bad debt, they then let major banks declare financial insolvency and pad their life jackets with money? This seems mighty unfair to me, especially since credit companies, lack of a social safety net, stagnant wages, rising prices on basic commodities, and variable interest rates all add up to the equivalent of lead lifejackets for individuals (except the rich ones, because they get golden parachutes).

I mean, to a degree I can comprehend the logic of this because corporations hold many more votes than individuals through lobbying and campaign contributions, but still, corporations remain dependent on individuals to buy their crap.

As I'm not American, this shouldn't concern me, but since y'all are stinking it up for the rest of the world, I have to ask: How many among you are willing to give up comfort and self-interest and prepare yourselves for a hard fight ahead? For sure, I realize there are going to be domestic security measures soon to appear, and doubtless there will be surprising (at first) casualties on the front lines of resistance. I know this is speculative, and I wouldn't wish insurrection Spanish-style (circa 1930's) on anyone, but it looks like that is a poignant model at present...

For all the pontificating in the U.S. about how the rest of the world is lacking in self-determination and gumption in contrast to themselves, I would be surprised to find regular folks mobilizing and sacrificing themselves to fight off this disgraceful encroachment of citizenship. Palestinians will erupt with laughter when they see how inept Americans will prove to be in a desperate domestic situation.

Where are the master plans to organize and deal with this debacle? Think of what it would achieve if all homeowners were to defiantly stop making payments on their mortgage at this time! Yes, some folks would be seriously molested by authorities, but how can enforcers possibly deal with the entirety of that situation? With some casualties, I still see a chance for effective resistance, if anyone wanted it badly enough. But how 'bad enough' does it have to be?

I suspect instead that the self-adoring factor of American life is too entrenched for this sacrifice, however. Too many people are ingrained to believe that all solutions to all problems are biographical and individual in nature. Instead, neighbors will be at each others throats based on the behavior we've already seen in milder times of crisis (race riots; union busting).

Man, it must suck to be you!

I'm really glad that I'm not the only one who's been walking around thinking "And this is different from 9/11 -- how?" I abhor al Qaeda's goals and the means they use to achieve them, and yes, I think there's a big difference between killing people and "merely" ruining their lives, but in their arrogance these bankers and financiers have plenty in common with the al Qaeda leadership. Not least is the threat behind this bailout scheme: "Do what we say or we'll take the whole country down." Can't we sic the goddamn Patriot Act on these people?

How about making it a requirement that, in order to recieve bailout assistance, the company CEO must appear before Congress and publicly apologize. If he/she refuses, it would be up to the company's board of directors to fire that CEO in order to remain eligible.

"SLIGHT"?

If Barack were white, he would have a 25-point lead in the polls. Minimum.

God damn racist America. And that includes the Obama bashers on AlterNet (i.e. Karl.Ben) who are nothing but closet bigots.

Bin Laden wanted to bring us down and now he has. The World Trade Center collapse was the beginning. Economic collapse is what will bring America to its ruin. The excessive spending on the occupation of Iraq...which still distracts from all of the issues like education, healthcare, Main Street money woes... Bin Laden (and our own inept government leadership) has brought us down. He's won.

The Federal Reserve Bank needs to be ended immediately. It is not part of the government (they use the Federal name to trick the public) and they do not have the legal authority to create and regulate our money supply. According to the Constitution(ever heard of it?), Congress is the only body with the authority to do so. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 which illegally handed this power over to the private central bank is just like when Congress handed President Bush the authority to attack other countries at will, they legally cannot hand these powers off, it doesn't work that way. The Constitution is a great document, but unless we the people stand up and demand that the powers that be follow the laws set forth by it, it is just that, a document.

Final nail in the coffin

This is it. The end of the American empire. It has been a long time in coming and was completely avoidable but the perfect storm of public complacency, media consolidation, government corruption, and corporate greed have added up and sealed the coffin shut.

Sigh....it's times like this I am glad to be poor. I can't lose what I don't have. I have been expecting this collapse for years. People kept telling me I was nuts. I guess now is not the time to say I told you so, but damn, I told you so!

America will NEVER be the same. Eventually we might recover, but it will be a restructured society. We have the chance to make it better or worse. My guess is that it will get a whole lot worse before it begins to get better. By then, environmental catastrophe will be pounding down on us.

I wish conservatives realized that the Soviet empire collapsed because of their own economic mismanagement, not because Ronnie told Gorby to "tear down this wall."

FDR is puking in his grave.

America, you were nice (sort of) while you lasted. Good bye, my flawed but beautiful friend.

Luv,
Granny

but NOT enough. While this protest is clever, the people need to think more long term. We should have several buy nothing days to flex our economic muscle. For too long, the power-elite thought nothing could touch it as it pulled the wool over the public's eyes through media manipulation while doing whatever it wanted. Let the rats know we still can be a force to be reckoned with and things have changed more than they know.

In responce to this insane bailout, I offer this suggestion.
Everyone should take their garbage up to 1600 Penn. Ave. and dump it over the fence as an act of political protest for them giving us nothing but garbage.
Hell in DC alone there should be enough to fill up the south lawn in about two minutes.
Then we go to Wall St. and fill it up too.
Go right down to the exchange floor and sling a huge bag of crap at them. Dogwalkers should take their pets to the steps of the Dow and have them do their thing all over the steps,in the parking garages and for sure everytime one of their limo's pull up.
We don't need guns to tell DC and Wall St just how fed up we are, just big dogs on X-Lax.

Patriotism and the wallet
Posted by: adempatriot on Sep 25, 2008 10:35 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
So much has been made in the recent years of "patriotism"- what it is, what it isn't, whether or not you wear a flag pin- and it is often so juvenile, because it is little better than nanny-nanny-boo-boo one-ups-manship. It's like "MY big strong patriotism can beat up your 97-pound weakling patriotism!" It's childish, and we should be ashamed.
So here is an idea. Suppose John McCain, or Henry Paulson, or Erik Prince,or or any one of a number of famous rich people, wanted to do something actually patriotic. What a concept! Patriotism by deeds, not just words!
Well, McCain has seven, or eight, or thirteen homes. Whatever. He can't use them all. Probably the power and water are on, and paid up anyway.

Meanwhile, a lot of people are having to leave their homes behind because the lenders won't let them stay without paying up. So people end up with relatives, or on the street, while many houses sit unoccupied, and decay, and their swimming pools turn into health hazards, etc. And the rich people have extra empty houses but say they are patriots and want to help those less fortunate.

Maybe McCain, or anyone who has extra wealth, could let some of these people use his extra houses? Hmmm? why the heck not? Is he patriotic, does he care about the American people, or not?

And what about all the other people who have extra houses and extra wealth? What about the golden parachute crowd? Suppose someone (what's her name that was fired from HP) got a 43 (?)million dollar package after being fired. Maybe, to be patriotic and really be willing to actually sacrifice something tangible to help poorer Americans who are losing their jobs and homes, 35 or 40 million of that 43 million could go into a fund that gives, say, x number of kids somewhere full health care for a year, or some other worthy cause. Why the heck not? It would help Americans, and not hurt the giver. And it would be patriotic in a way that meant something.

Suppose then, if that happened, another wealthy corporate fatcat or Wall Street mega-profiteer wants to be JUST as patriotic, and says "Well, then, I'll show them how patriotic I can be!! I'll give FIFTY million to needy people, and only keep three mil for myself! So THERE!"
It could get to be a competition. A movement, even. Kind of like Star Search: "Patriot Search" or "Are you More Patriotic than a Fifth-Grader?" or "Who will give the most stolen wealth back, and win the patriotism award?"

Who is the most patriotic?!?!... as judged by how far they open their wallets and return their ill-gotten gains! Now, that would MEAN someting.
It would be real patriotism in action- putting the "patriots'" money where their mouths are! Otherwise, it is nothing but hot gas, signifying nothing.
Let the people who profited cough the money back up! Let them be shamed, so they will turn their pockets out and give it back- or risk the label of not only being criminal and immoral, but clearly UNpatriotic- perhaps to the point of being nearly treasonous.
Let those who made the debt, pay the debt!! That is, if anyone can figure out who they are....

NOT ONLY "NO", BUT: HELL NO

Senator Shelby,

NO BAIL OUT - NO WAY - NOT ONLY "NO" - BUT "HELL NO"

My logic follows:

This is related to the $700+ billion bail out of the Wall Street tycoons, banks, and the other various financial/governmental predators who are responsible for this crisis.

In 2004 the Iraqi resistance issued a communique that can be seen here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2GMmrI_aGY

I put this short video together, about 8 minutes long, to show the fact that EVERYTHING about the "reasons" for attacking Iraq were total fabrications. Not one single truth was told in the run up to the war. MY point with this video is: this ILLEGAL and IMMORAL war of Imperialist aggression is a very large chunk of what has put our country into this crisis. the Iraqi FREEDOM FIGHTERS stated in this 2004 communique that they would make us go broke. Indeed; THEY HAVE.

The Bush Juntas' demand for $700 billion to "bail out" his buddies is equal to the $700 billion spent on this ILLEGAL WAR. If you had not maliciously participated in this GENOCIDAL RAMPAGE: this e-mail would never have been a thought.

This "bail out" will devalue the Dollar and create an unheard of inflationary rate of 15% to 20%.

We already see it at the gas pump. We WILL SEE IT in Octobers Huntsville Utilities rates.

In the knowledge that all of his lies would see the light of day: The TRAITOR; G W BUSH RUSHED you into this immoral "CRUSADE" as the great "decider" so eloquently put it.

Now this accident of birth is rushing you into another MANUFACTURED disaster.

The latest piece of this administrations' disaster is a WELL ORCHESTRATED MOVE TO a TOTALITARIAN FASCIST POLICE STATE.

Given the history of Prescott Bush and Herbert Walker: It should be quite evident to you by now that this is soon to become a DICTATORSHIP. "Things would be a heck of a lot easier, if this was a DICTATORSHIP; So long as I'm the DICTATOR" - G W Bush 43rd President of the United States of America. He has made this desire known in public forums on several occasions. He was not "clowning around" I am NOT LAUGHING.

If you still have not recognized the danger posed by this Moron and the Neo-Con Cabal: I can only assume one of two possibilities; You are "one of them", or you've been too busy playing solitaire on your office computer to notice. Which ever one you are: you do not belong in Washington.

I was heartened yesterday when you indicated you are against this "bail out". That was the first time I ever agreed with anything you've done!

Many of us prefer the prospect of a DEPRESSION rather than giving these vultures enough power and wealth to turn this once great country into a FASCIST POLICE STATE.

I agree with Benjamin Franklin about preferring FREEDOM over "security" ANY DAY. With the kind of "security" the Bush Junta is offering: There will be no freedom.

Please: continue to oppose: Filibuster, drag your feet, let me and like minded others testify so it does become "too late"

We are doomed if this "bail out" becomes a reality. Much more harm than good will come of cooperating with ANY IDIOTIC "PROPOSAL" made by "The Great Decider"

The revolution will not be televised nor advertised. It has already begun.

The "bailout" is nowhere near a bailout. It is all pigs at the trough. It won't help one bank in trouble. Here is the truth brokendown. The best ECONOMIC analysis I have seen of what Paulson wants to pull off:

THE BIG LIE

These MFers are playing for keeps - they've already shown that THEY don't give a rat's ass about due process. There is no such thing as a free lunch. You gotta pay some dues somehow.

OH TREMBLE AMERIKA

(Jehovah's Queer Witness)

Oh tremble Amerika, you land of Moloch,
for you have greatly broken my covenant:
that you should speak for The Angel of Democracy
to every corner of the world.

What have you done, Amerika, spreading fear
of your own self (instead of love for freedom)
to every nation, to every person;
yeah, even unto your own citizens,
that they tremble so before you,
Oh Hand of Satanic Ruin?

Who are you, Amerika, that you should take ten percent
of your children,
(who you call "homosexual" but I call "Hellene")
and teach them terror unending from day to day,
and year to year,
right unto their very own death?

What wickedness is this, Amerika,
that you take the very Word of God and blaspheme it
to preach the killing and misery of a good number
of your brave children (Hellenes)
whose only sin is brotherly and sisterly love?
(Were you to sin in such a seemly manner,
you'd all know heaven by now!)

Amerika, you are NO LONGER God's country,
for you have broken your covenant with me,
in a most grevious manner.
You have invented A NEW ARROGANCE which hubris
even I have never seen, nor Lucifer ever conceived;
in such unbridled malice of your own loyal
Hellenic citizens, WHO ARE ALSO MY ANGELS!

Oh, Amerika, tremble now, for the hour has arrived:
for amber waves of grain to wither under a Great Drought,
for purple mountain majesty to shower pestilence
upon the fruited plain,
and for fiery whirlwinds to level your great cities
that lay parched of spirit and void of compassion.

My hetero Amerikans: return to your homes,
complacent in your gender supremacy,
believing that you are righteous
in your condemnation of homosexuals,
or in your tolerating these citizens
(as long as they don't demand equal treatment
under your laws).

Amerika-Moloch, you ARE hypocrite
unlike any other under the sun,
and your time in this age has come to a close.
You have sealed your own fate:
of a terrible Civil War of many deaths and unholy
destruction.
Vermont shall go insane with rabid homophobia
and rape herself into many pieces;
while Florida burns from political fires,
and sinks into the Atlantic,
her great smoky plume turning all of Mexico into midnight
for eleven dark months.

And all lands in between and west of these two raging
states,
shall likewise be consumed by plagues and madness
of myriad types.
The Great Mississippi shall overflow with the blood
of you hypocrites,
drowning many in your sleep;
and your towns shall stink of your children's putrifying
flesh.

For I have summoned my Angel who long ago
freed the Hebrews from Egyptian bondage,
to now unshackle all same-sex lovers from your
diabolical chains.
For them, I shall keep the region known as Northern
California, as a safe refuge...
casting out all who maintain homophobic ideas,
no matter how slight.
This includes many churches of the Christian realm.

And this region I shall name "Athenia",
to separate her from the punishment I shall mete out
to the remainder of land known
(for a while longer) as Amerika.
