Did Sarah Palin Really Say She Wouldn't Hire Blacks?
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest headlines via email.
On April 29, 14 black leaders in Alaska, including prominent ministers, NAACP officials, and community activists, met with Palin to voice their complaint over minority hiring and job opportunities. During the meeting she allegedly said that she didn't have to hire any blacks. Even more damning, she purportedly said that she didn't intend to hire any.
Gwen Alexander, president of the African-American Historical Society of Alaska, initially reported Palin's quip. This charge is so racially incendiary that it sounded like yet another one of the legion of Palin urban legends that have fueled the cyber gossip mill from the moment Republican presidential contender John McCain put her on his ticket. The charge had to be confirmed or denied. If Governor Palin or any other public official flatly said that they had no intention to hire blacks, that would be politically unpardonable. And for a potential vice-president, it would and should be the kiss of death.
In a phone message to this writer, Megan Stapleton, a Palin spokesperson with the McCain-Palin campaign committee, vehemently denied that Palin ever said that she would not hire blacks. Sharon Leighow, communications spokesperson in the Alaska governor's office, also disputed the allegation. She said that Palin's press secretary was part African-American and that two of her senior advisors were Filipino and Korean.
Leighow was also adamant that Palin did not hire staff persons based on color, but solely on talent and skill. As she put it, "Governor Palin is totally color-blind."
But in a phone conversation, Gwen Alexander of the African-American Historical Society of Alaska stuck by her contention that Palin made the racially charged retort. She also charged that Palin did not support or even officially acknowledge the group's annual Juneteenth Commemoration.
June 19 is celebrated as the date of slave emancipation in Texas. Alaska is one of 13 states that has designated it an official holiday. Other Alaska governors have sent the traditional greetings and acknowledgements to the Society. Alexander says Palin snubbed the group.
The unofficial charge, then, is that Palin is insensitive to the state's African Americans, and that includes refusing to hire and appoint African Americans. That charge is hotly disputed by Palin's staff and they cite names and numbers to back it up. But apart from the veracity of the charge and the denial, Palin's statement that she's absolutely color-blind when it comes to hiring does set off warning bells.
The color-blind argument strikes at the heart of the continuing debate over what and how far public officials should go to insure that their staffs and their appointments truly represent the broadest diversity possible. Officials must make a concerted outreach effort to make that happen. A color-blind posture more often than not has been nothing but a convenient excuse not to seek out, hire or promote African Americans and other minorities in their administration, no matter how qualified.
Diversity is a major issue this election. It's implicit in Democratic rival Barack Obama's White House run. It's explicit in Ward Connerly's anti-affirmative initiative on the ballot in three states this November. Obama opposes it. McCain backs it, and so does Palin.
Palin's commitment to diversity is no small point in Alaska. According to the 2000 Census figures, blacks make up officially about 4 percent of the state population. But those who self-identify as at least part African-American bump up the percentage much higher. When American Indians, Aleuts, Eskimos, and Asians are taken together, minorities make up about one quarter of Alaska's population. This makes the state one of the most ethnically diverse in the nation. Diversity must be more than a word that an Alaska governor pays campaign lip service to and then ignores.
Palin's campaign and gubernatorial spokespersons say the charge that she is hostile to blacks and minorities is unfair. That may well be true. But according to those black leaders in Alaska who challenged Palin on her administration's minority hiring practices, the charge is much deserved.

As a black man I could care less, this is nothing new. As a people, blacks should focus on what they can do for themselves and how they can tackle more pressing issues that effects their environment.

Having grown Up in a Lilly White area in MI- I know it is poss to live near people of other colors and cultures- but yet never interact with them. I had to go away to College to expereince Diversity first hand. then I had to move to SF to have interactions with OTHER Groups. So What is the democgraphics of Wasila, or all of Alaska?
My guess is that the 'Pin up Girl' (seen but never heard) has very little expereince with any diverse cultures- in fact I understand the One Non White community she did interact with - she screwed- Figuratively!
So her minority credentials are as lacking as her economic, Foreign relations, military oversight, her Social Conscience....
Sarah has not just proven herself a Crappy Nominee, she's proven herself to be a crappy Human Being!

She's twisted -- on every level -- she's twisted. She shouldn't be on the ticket and EVERY American should be upset that McCain was that reckless and disrespectful of the American people to pick a "new enlistee" and therefore putting our country in harms' way in the event of his demise. That's unconsionable -- and it's not patriotic.
Obama is the solution for the 21st century -- he's intelligent, well-educated -- he's a transformational leader and an extraordinary manager. He spent 12 years studying, practising and teaching Constitutional law; 8 years as state Senator of a district of over 750,000 and a US Senator of a state with 13 million and during that time he sponsored 131 bills including energy independence, ethics reform and nuclear proliferation.
Wake up America -- Palin is pathetic. McCain should be ashamed of himself.

There's enough wrong with Sarah Palin - you don't have to dwell in the mud of innuendo and hearsay that this article does. And merit should be the determining factor in a hire, not some potentially harmful 'commitment to diversity'.

McCain and the repuglican party are responsible for deregulating the banking industry which led to this multi-billion $$$$$$ bail out by tax payers. Now McCain wants to fly back to Washington to save us, that's ballsy if nothing else. They really do think we're idiots. He said the same about capturing bin Laden. He knows how to do it, just vote for him, give him my precious vote and swallow his bull-shit, he will show us. No matter he can't remember in the afternoon what his handlers told him in the morning. No wonder the polls are slip sliding away.
LOL! He wants to postpone the debate because, he says, he wants to focus on our economic collapse/crisis. It is mostly his party's fault, and an investigation or the appointment of a bi-partisan Congressional committee should hold hearings and an investigation should definately be called for, but AFTER the election.
Does McCain understand that as president he will have to deal with our economy (very VERY bad thanks to his repug party) every day, AS WELL as guiding us through not only our wars, but international relations over all, and about a billion other things all at the same time?
Cause if he wins (God help us, Jesus, Mary and Joseph protect us) that's just what he'll need to do. That's no shit. I've noticed something disconcerting. McCain's left eye lid is drooping. It could indicate a small stroke.
This election gets wackier every single day.

Why is she kept away from the press? She's not that bright. She believes she's the next 'Joan of Arc'. Back in the day, they killed Joan,is she saying she want that treatment? I think not. But a heavy hand behind tits and ass is still a heavy hand. The People would'nt stand for her in the VP spot if she ever gave a real interview. She'd be as exposed as a stripper and so just what kind of scum the system will dredge up to cram down our throats. If the media was'nt controlled...we'd have that interview. Instead we get smiles and waves. Big deal!! But then again that's how you win a beauty pagent. With the way elections are run, she probably thinks she's still in one. I agree we needed a woman in office for a while now but not one that's a female Stalin. But if it looks good enough, you can get the vote even if you're full of shit.

You can't discourage hiring based on a protected status; encouraging the hiring, promotions, appointments, etc. is a part of the same racist monster: the good ol' boy network.
Race is neither a qualifier nor a disqualifier for any job. Especially when it comes to taxpayer supported positions in a government of, by, and for the people, a person's skin color should be off the table when considering that person's credentials. What sort of Neanderthal in this day and age really thinks that racial profiling (the ideal candidate for this job will be __insert__favorite__shade__here__) for the purpose of filling a government job is a good thing?

It is time we racially separated because White American values are socailly warped and we cannot get along with them in peace and brotherhood. It is White Amerikkkan Conservatives (and their minority allies) who started this culture war, it is time we as African- Americans fought back just like any other group who is in a war with an enemy, you don't offer them flowers or pleas of peace you use violence.

Personally, I'm voting for Obama because his election will put a stop to the "everybody hates us" complainers. It won't change anything substantial but maybe the press will start to ignore the complainers.

They were turned away and told to mail the letter.
Visit the website to send a letter to PBS asking them to include these questions in the VP debate. I want to hear her answers.

Honestly, we've got plenty of ammunition to use against McCain/Palin. We don't need questionable--and ultimately unverifiable--charges to make our case.

MLK'S Dream is over regardless if Obama wins or loses the Presidency
