..on what basis are these the most popular? Did you do a ring-around? Or is it just on the basis of clickage?

Because feel free to castigate me soundly, but I'm not convinced that "Men who love burgers and hate sex", for instance, is such a world-shattering topic that makes people all over the planet go "Hell yeah!"

Just a thought...

10. Bush's Petro-Cartel Almost Has Iraq's Oil
More foreign affairs crap. The same kind of stuff the journalists and tv talking heads are into.

9. Stephen Colbert: New American Hero

Partisan political gossip

8. Where Bush's Arrogance Has Taken Us

"Two Minute Hate" stuff. Strictly tribal

7. Lobbying for Armageddon

anti-Religion, cultural war stuff.

6. Why Religion Must End

ditto

5. Tyranny of the Christian Right
Ditto

4. Could Bush Be Prosecuted for War Crimes?
Partisan politcal infighting

3. Iraq's War Porn

Foreign policy crap, i.e,. what the megacorporations are interested in.

2. Men Who Love Burgers and Loathe Sex

gender politics, social issues, wedge issues

1. Top 10 Signs of the Impending U.S. Police State

Bourgeois/aristocrat concerns, what those who are successful are concerned about. THey care more about this crap than getting healthcare and progressive taxation because they are comfortably well off, and so their concerns lie elsewhere, e.g., privacy, etc.

And your Top 10 would be?

My reaction to the list contents was similar to the poster's, but that is the content that Alternet provides. I do not object, in concept, to gender and other subsection politics, however. We can all support better income for workers, but we still have too many situations in which women are paid less than men for the same job. There is a similar discrepancy for some races in education. Just throwing money at workers and at education does not correct the official or cultural discrimination.

As for my top ten list on Alternet:

1) Top use is to vent. I had to voice a comment after Joe Lieberman's woe-is-me performance upon losing to Ned Lamont. I knew Alternet would give me an item that would fit my need.

2) Top usefulness is to remind how ineffective electronic media is. I realized I needed to return to the writing that I had done before and started a print newsletter to shape the next presidential administration.

3) Top idea is from a poster who opined that Supreme Court seats should be allocated on a gender, racial, and/or other basis. I am not sure if I agree with that, but I keep finding the idea running around inside my mind waiting for me to develop it into something solid.

4) Top new knowledge is farming articles. Even though I live in an agricultural state, most of what I hear from the local media is about ethanol and hog farms. It was good to read about no-till farms in Brazil and thefts from farms of all sizes in America.

5) Most useless topics are 9/11, Iraq, and the New Democrats (or whatever the current catch phrase is). These were the same topics that I heard and read in all other media. I did not really find new insights or new information on Alternet.

6) Most obnoxious advertisement on the site? I don't remember.

7) Most annoying Alternet response to any post? "We could do better if we just had more money." (I understand and share that opinion, but it doesn't make the statement any less annoying.)

8) Biggest reason I read Alternet: For the most part, the pages load easily on dial-up and I don't have to waste time waiting for the items to load.

9) Most annoying posts? Posts that have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

10) Most desired change for the new year? Wider variety of articles and writers, and more essays and articles that offer something new, whether it is the issue or the perspective.

But Nothing On 'North American Union'

I could be wrong but the most important story in our nations history I think; erasing the borders of Mexico, Canada, and U.S. No one outside Lou Dobbs (CNN) brings it up. That includes Alternet.org.

I talk to Congress and they deny it. The citizens of this U.S. better quit watching TV and start researching this issue. Has anyone herd of the 'Amero'? You better find out about it. Do you care about your kids, and grandkids?

Do you know that our Congress, President, and all government offices are trustee's of the Federal Reserve Board, World Bank, and IMF? Did you know every time you fill out a 1040 form you wave your 5th Amendment Rights, do you know what the 5th Amendment is? Did you know that per the IRS own tax code taxes are voluntary? Did you know that the 16th Amendment (IRS) is void, it was never ratified by a 3/4 majority by the states.

Before you fall into your regular world of denial, try out these web sites for a starter.

ban President Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Tony Blair and Jack Straw from entering church grounds, due to their "agressive war on Iraq. "April, 2003"

Their entry into the church will tarnish it as hands are covered in blood of the innocent. 'Global Research' 12/26/2006
www.globalresearch.ca

Of course the U.S. Media never let this hit the air waves and print.

This lion's share of “most popular” articles put out by Alternet clearly reflects an editorial agenda shy on core issues as it habitually goes for the cheap and skin-deep shot.

There is occasional good content at this site. More often than not, it’s brought on by bloggers. Most “leftist” authors here (like MSM counterparts) seem promoted and financed by whatever foundation/cosmetic front that poses as the “progressive” resource of the day. Ditto for the ersatz “right” elsewhere…

If the bulk of this place were more of a caricature left “gatekeeper” site it would need a flashing caution signal at the header.
