Gay Marriage Is Supported by a Majority of the Public

By Deb Price, Creators Syndicate. Posted June 23, 2008.

One of the most exciting things about the delightful first wave of gay weddings across California was how much the nation took it in stride.

The moment California became the second state to start marrying gay couples, America's wedding album gained wonderfully memorable snapshots.

Who could not be touched by seeing wispy-haired Del Martin, 87, cutting a three-tiered wedding cake from her wheelchair, helped by her 83-year-old bride, Phyllis Lyon?

But the picture I'll most treasure is of a toddler in a pressed shirt and oversized tie, his dark hair wetted down and parted perfectly, gleefully squirming in one dad's arms while his other dad took a break from their special day to tell CNN how their family will be stronger because of the legal protections of marriage.

Oddly, from a distance the most exciting thing about the delightful first wave of gay weddings across California was how much the nation took it in stride. CNN flashed supportive headlines, such as, "CALIFORNIA GOLD BAND RUSH," "HAPPY COUPLES" and "JUST MARRIED," but then quickly returned to coverage of flooded rivers.

And unlike in Massachusetts, where then-Gov. Mitt Romney was the skunk at the garden party, California's officials embraced the gay breakthrough. The supportive politicians' diversity underscores the breadth of support for the newlyweds: Mayors Gavin Newsom of San Francisco (white) and Ron Dellums of Oakland (African American) performed ceremonies. And Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles (Latino) will, too.

With gay couples thoroughly woven into their state's fabric, heterosexual Californians are familiar with gay parents, meaning they know marriage will protect the little girl in their carpool, not just her lesbian moms: One-quarter of the Golden State's 108,000 gay couples have kids, the Williams Institute estimates, and one in 10 adopted children in the state has a gay parent.

California's florists, bakers, wedding planners, innkeepers and jewelers are celebrating. Macy's ran a full-page ad: "First comes love. Then comes marriage. ... Let Macy's Wedding Gift & Registry help you start your new life together."

The Williams Institute projects that over the first three years, gay couples will spend $683.6 million on California weddings and generate $63.8 million in government revenues. As Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger sweetly summed it up, "You know, I'm wishing everyone good luck with their marriages, and I hope that California's economy is booming because everyone is going to come here and get married."

Challenges are definitely ahead: A community-spirited "Make Change, Not Lawsuits" educational drive smartly discourages out-of-staters who marry from recklessly suing back home.

And a California ballot initiative threatens to halt the marriages. But I'm betting by November most voters will recognize the advantages of not turning back the clock.

Already, a Field Poll released May 28, right after the California Supreme Court ruled that the state could no longer discriminate, found a majority -- 51 percent to 42 percent -- support gay couples' marrying. Among the Californians ages 18 to 29, support for gay marriage is 68 percent to 25 percent, versus just 36 percent to 55 percent among those 65 or older.

Broken down by race, whites favor it, 53 percent to 41 percent, as do Latinos, 49 percent to 42 percent.

And by 54 percent to 40 percent, Californians oppose "changing the California state constitution" to bar gay marriages.

The wedding snapshots tell the story: Happiness loves to be shared.

There. Said it. Now I'm going to go find a baseball cap to wear. Yee ha.

I'm glad the world didn't end. There were reports that gay marriage would bring Armageddon. Turns out they meant to say that Obama's bringing the End Times. Close one.

Gay Marriage issue could cost Obama California

The Field Poll is a crock:

http://cbs5.com/local/same.sex.marriage.2.734478.html

Despite the hopes pinned on the the Field Poll, as well as the youth vote,( and how many times has this failed we Democrats ), the recent remarks of Republican Keith Appell are far more on the money:

“ Republican strategist Keith Appell argues that conservatives in California will pay a lot of attention to the issue, which will improve McCain's chances for victory.

“I do think this issue puts California in play for McCain,” Appell said.

Appell said the dynamics are different in California than they were in Massachusetts because the court here overturned a vote of the people.

“When over 60 percent of the voters in California have their say on any issue, I think that having their will overturned in court will ignite a backlash,” he said. “There was no vote of the people in Massachusetts that was overturned by a Supreme Court decision.” “

Especially because it will become intensely bitter by November, the issue of Gay Marriage could easily cost Barack Obama California, and with it the election. Just because so many in the Media-Corporate Complex have an irreverent attitude towards Marriage, doesn't mean that the people share it. To many people, not just right-wing zealots, same-sex marriage is profane.

As a Democrat, I want Obama to win this November. But I worry that the same-sex marriage issue might be a greater obstacle to victory than McCain and/or the GOP.

Obama may then have no choice but to speak out for traditional marriage. No matter much shrieking and tantrums this will certainly produce.

I'm actually glad it's not news.

People who actually live, go to stores, have friends, talk to others, go to church, and actually spend time in public know that gay marriage is not an issue for the American people.

Partisan journalists and talking heads, neo-con apologists and other agenda-based types, who project phony personalities while spewing twisted logic ("If gays are allowed to marry, then the institution of marriage is meaningless for the rest of us!!"), only know where their next big payola check to pay for their lies is coming from.

By taking control of the gay marriage issue. The Republicans use us as a scare tactic and the Democrats give in.

If Obama does not stick up for me this time he can forget my vote and that of MANY gay Americans.

California's citizens will reject the court's view on same-sex marriage

In November, California voters will make
marriage by a man and a woman their state
law.
Also the polls, survey's etc. showing a
favorable view of homosexual marriage is not
easily believed.
The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists
Association recently boasted that although
homosexuals are less than two percent of the
population, three-fourths of the people who
decide the content of the front page of the
New York Times are homosexual.

"The press can both stimulate public opinion and miseducate iit....The press has become the
greatest power within the Western countries,
more powerful than the legislature, the executive, and judicary. One would then ask:
By what law has it been elected and to whom is
it responsible." Aleksander Solzhenitsyn.

Don't believe everything you read.

To all the homophobic trolls up here

... that can't WAIT to post hateful crap the second you see any Alternet story on gay people:

You all really REALLY need to get a life and stop posting bullshit that no one up here believes or cares about. Just don't waste your time. I can't even figure out why you post up here. Do you like the angry comments you get in response to your stupid "factoids"? That says volumes about you. Maybe it's time to see a shrink to find out just why it is that you care so deeply about what other people do in their private lives. Is it that you yourself have no life? That would be my guess. Anyone obsessively concerned with what others do usually have nothing goin' on.

Then there's the other TRUE fact that most homophobes are themselves gay and hate themself for being too cowardly to come out of the closet. That seems to be the case for the more vehement ones, like Fred Phelps. In any case, you're just making fools of yourselves up here. Most Alternet readers are pretty well-read and worldly, and most homophobes are bitter little nothings without an ability for reasoned thought.

Just my two cents. Save your time.

Trying to understand homosexuality is an interesting challenge

Homosexuals have a very biased outlook whenever
someone disagrees with them.

Right away you say " Then there's the other TRUE fact that most homophobes are themselves gay.
Actually, they are probably bisexual. In a homophobic society, people are terrorized into playing it "straight," and therefore suppress their homosexual urges. Much easier for a bisexual, than a homosexual.

Their fear of their own gay side results in acting homophobic...to prove to themselves and the world just how "hetero" they really are."

That's a common response I get whenever I post
something on a homosexual site. I'm secure
in my heterosexuality and am sorry that you
can't face the fact of your confusion of the
sexual behavior you're living. And worse of
all you offer no hope to any homosexual who
doesn't like his/her lifestyle and want's to
change. You say, "once gay, always gay." --
such a sorry outlook on life. There are
thousands of homosexuals who want to change,
but your negative outlook doesn't permit them
to change.

The feminization of men and boys is a recent phenomenon, along with the weird behavior of
Hollywood idols, and other entertainers who
have promoted homosexual behavior to naive and
immature youngsters who experiment with
homosexual behavior and get "hooked" with it.
There are no homosexual genes, and there are
no accepted medical studies that show homosexuals are "born that way." It's all
anecdotal that homosexuals can offer to
explain their lifestyle.

I'm voting for Ralph Nader

The only candidate who believes that I the right to marry. Obama is using gay Americans for votes only, then will sell us out when elected.

As a gay American I'm tired of waiting and holding my nose because I am lectured on how we need to win the White House at any cost.

If you were treated like a second class citizen I would not expect YOU to hold your nose for the "good of the party"

My party let me down and I am not alone.

If McCain wins so be it. By voting for Ralph at least I know I voted for somebody who supports the gay and lesbian community.

The Republicans will use gay Americans AGAIN as a lighting rod this election. It's time for Obama to step up to the plate and put an end to this. Saying that marriage is "up to the states" is not good enough for me. As an African American he should know the difference between being allowed on the bus and then asked to sit in the back.

Until I see a "change" my vote is for Ralph.

Most Americans have come to realize and recognize that virtually all of us have either friends or family, people that we love, who are gay. We want the people we love to be happy and to have equal rights. That's why a majority support gay marriage. Those who suffer from the disorder of homophobia are so bigoted that they have blinders on and refuse to recognize that fact. Homosexuality is and always has been(gasp)part of our nature as humans.(Primates too) As my gay friends say "We're here and we're queer, so get over it!"

California wants to foster appreciation for diversity,...but it's disingenuous

California formed a 36 member advisory task
force to present diversity and discourage
discriminatory attitutes.

But the task force was loaded with gay activists and sympathizers affiliated with such fringe groups as Older Asian Sisters in Solidarity and Lavender Youth Recreation and
Information Center, asa well as more mainstream outfits such as GLSEN and the Natl.
Education Association and Gay Caucus.

Their report showed a desire to probe school
children's attitudes about homosexuality...integrate pro-homosexual and pro-transgender messages into all curricula, including SCIENCE, HISTORY, LANGUAGE,ARTS,
and even MATH.
Use taxpayer dollars to establish Gay-Straight Alliances on campuses, put all school personnel through extensive and ongoing sensitivity training.

While children and teachers are being taught about the gay lifestyle, the "children are never told that homosexual practices lead directly to Hepatitis B infection, a massive incidence of veneraly disease and a compulsive, addictive sexual lifestyle with severe emotional problems.

They try to educate our children only about the positive aspects of the homosexual lifestyle in order to encourage the curiosity of youth and lead our young people into the homosexual lifestyle.

We're on to your agenda and will totally fight it!

I'm looking forward to the California vote
on giving marriage as one man and one woman
only. You'll see the California voters overturn the court's opinion.
We will find the common strength of do the
right thing, and it's all stated beautifully by the words of Winston Churchill.

"If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all odds against you and only a perilous chance for survival. Indeed, there may be a worse case.
You may have to fight when there is no hope for victory, for it would be better to perish than to live as slaves."

With this motto to follow, we will defeat the
homosexual activist agenda, we will not perish nor will we live as slaves -- you will not
win this battle!

Still waiting for answer to help unhappy homosexuals

Earlier I posed a question which nobody gave
me an answer.
What hope to you offer homosexuals who are
unhappy with their lifestyle and want to
change it to one that turns away from homosexual activities?

There are thousands of homosexuals who try
some form of ex-gay organizations (whether they
find peace and a solution doesn't always work
out, but mainly because the effort is not long
enough and they don't have the proper guidance
from the counselors), and there are thousands
of homosexuals who commit suicide because they're unhappy and can't find a solution to
change out of their homosexual lifestyle (and
you can't lay the blame of their suicides on societies putting pressures on being ostracised by heterosexuals (which sometimes
does add to the problem).
But their main unhappiness comes from feeling
trapped in homosexuality that they don't
want.
I'd like to hear your offerings to those
unhappy homosexuals to give them hope.

Seven Litmus Tests (part 1 of 2)
Posted by: HoboHomo on Jun 25, 2008 6:46 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
(I originally wrote this essay in 1997):

Seven Litmus Tests
by Ezekiel J. Krahlin (Jehovah's Queer Witness)

So, you have straight friends--even family members,
perhaps--who are so very understanding and accepting of your
homosexuality. Or are they, really? Take a second look and
see how they stand up to the seven litmus tests I describe
herein:

1) Of course, if they accept your homosexuality, they are
most likely "liberals". And--being the good liberals they
are--they proudly wear T-shirts and decals proclaiming their
support of black people's rights, women's rights, ecological
causes, anti-nuclear slogans, et cetera. But where are their
T-shirts that say something like "Another hetero for gay
rights"? If your straight friends do not display pro-gay
icons on a regular basis--as they do for other causes--then
they are not truly supportive of your sexual civil rights.
Just as in the past, many white folks did not vocalize support
for black people from fear of being called "nigger
lovers"...many liberals are afraid of being labeled "faggot"
if they display support for gay rights. (Their loss, and your
holocaust.)

2) Your "progressive" hetero friends love to chew the fat
over political issues (see above)...yet they never seem to
come around to discussing the gay dilemma. Unless, of course,
you yourself interject that topic, with resulting token
responses by your "supportive" chums. But if you're silent, or
not there, homosexuality is never a part of their progressive
agenda. If they donate to liberal causes, have they ever
included a contribution to some lesbian or gay organization?

3) If your "loving" family members say they support you...how
far will they go in defending you before a bigoted relative?
Or do they avoid the topic of homosexuality altogether, in
order to never be in a position to defend you?

4) If you lost a lover from AIDS or other tragedy: how many
family members rush to your side in loving concern, to ease
you through your passage of grief...as they clearly would for
their heterosexual kin? Or do they give you a cursory nod of
sympathy, then go on their own selfish way? (Implying, of
course, that no one can really take a homosexual relationship
seriously...it is, at best, a joke; and certainly something
one can get over in a few weeks or less.)

5) Has any close relative (such as a brother, sister, or
parent) ever voluntarily approached you to ask your opinions
of what it's like to be gay, and how you cope with an
intolerant society? Does any relative take the kindness to
recognize your humanity during Lesbian/ Gay Pride Week? (Or
do they all pretend they don't even know of its existence,
even when you remind them of the upcoming event each year?)
Has any one of them actually read a book about
homosexuality--just as they read about racism, Viet Nam,
etc.-- that they may better understand the issue? (Are there any
books in their homes about gay people...along with their books
on women's rights, racism, and other progressive topics?)

(...cont'd next msg.)

Sounds like you pick and choose certain parts
of the Holy Bible to make your point. You
can't do that -- read and follow the entire
Bible or just leave the Holy Scripture alone
because you're blind to the entire message.

If I change my feeling about you, my confession
to Jesus will absolve me of condemnation, but
with you, you're still living a lie and don't
know what peace of mind means.

God does love you, but that won't help you
while you still deny Him and live a worldly
life.

Don't quote from the Holy Bible unless you
believe it.
