Lessons From the Sen. Craig Calamity

By Deb Price, Creators Syndicate. Posted September 10, 2007.

Longtime gay activist Michael Rogers said, "It was simply no longer acceptable for me to sit there and watch a political party filled with so many closeted gay men beat up on gay Americans."

Sorry, but this article is no longer available on AlterNet.

First , did Craig actually do anything wrong. Me thinks not. Apart from being creepy ( lets face it if you have to get your kicks fooling around in public toilets you are seriously f*&ked up - but there's no law against being a freakazoid.) Admitedly witnessing two grown men engaging in boy love in a public toilet is not something I would be comfortable with if I was using said facility, not to mention how it would affect a young lad who strays into the toilets unaccompanied. So laws do need to be in place to discourage this type of behaviour. But to the extent of sending in a Cop to trap someone? (Confederacy of the Dunces anyone?) I would rather the police spend their time catching the person who stole my bicycle the other day.

Secondly , I think the real issue is not whether he did anything wrong but how what he did is in stark contrast to his public demeanour.
He is a politician with a great deal of power and , moreover, the members of his constituency believe he is a family man of impeccable moral fibre. This is the ultimate betrayal, we are not talking about you catching your best friend shagging some total stranger the night before he marry's your sister. This is politics, this man has made decisions which are based on his hatred of himself and people like him. He has betrayed gay people and the people who voted for him, and if that wasnt enough, he is in total denial.
If others politicians like him are going to be outed, the sooner the better; society cannot afford to have these troubled self hating individuals out there making important decisions on other peoples lives. Unless of course they can accept who they are and not pretend to hide under a cloak of non existent family values.

Americans eat gossip for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Dear Deb Price . . .

I appreciate the commentary and thought provoking dialogue. For me, the Larry Craig incident says more about us as a society than it might suggest about the Senator.

In a country where ten percent of the population is or is not gay, where heterosexuals engage in male on male sex, and where women prefer bisexual encounters or not why does the Larry Craig drama consume us.

Might we also examine whether this situation and the press coverage differed from the Paris Hilton Affair. Lindsey Lohan is another that draws crowds. Americans eat gossip for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

My suspicion is, in this country, in a competitive culture, we wish to ensure that we are as glorious as the Jones family. We want to see them fall. We are so very stressed we fear our own inadequacy. To observe others are frail helps to solidify we are fine.

Marketers know this and pander to our desire to be okay. These industrialist capitalize on our weakness, and they can, for the system that survives in America is Capitalism. We consume and consume in hopes of relieving the pain.

When we are unable to witness another in crisis to affirm our sense of self, we ingest other form of escapism. Sex is fine; it passes the time. Drugs do the job and drink is sublime. Much entertains us. We can criticize the government and well we might; however, at times that leaves us feeling more powerless. Thus . . .

I invite your thoughts on my own missives . . .
