Why Aren't There Sleazy Sex Scandals Involving Powerful Women?

That question often elicits the sexist "men are from Mars, women are from Venus" claptrap. But the truth is much more complicated.

As soon as the initial (extremely long) round of gossip about Tiger Woods's infidelity died down, the naive gender-based speculation began. Most egregiously, Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote a column pondering "Why is there no female Tiger Woods?" After a bunch of ill-researched speculation punctuated by the bemused refrain "Nobody knows," Cohen concluded that the drive to cheat and the drive to be powerful were linked, and then slammed us with the following wild generalization:

The reason the Glass Ceiling has not broken is that women have other priorities — maintaining relationships and being a mother. This is the way it is, and this is the way it has always been.

The ridiculousness of asserting that all women are solely interested in holding on to men and mothering children is impossible to overstate. But to engage Cohen's assertion on the merits, there are in fact a multitude of good reasons to explain why there are few female sex scandals along the lines of Eliot Spitzer, Tiger Woods or Wilt Chamberlain, reasons that do not boil down to some claptrap about Mars and Venus.

The first reason is that there aren't billions of male sex scandals on this scale either either. Besides the three above, and maybe Bill Clinton, I can't think of more than a handful of famous men who cheated so often with so many women. Sure there have been plenty of men in power caught with their pants down, but usually it's the more common kind of cheating that requires a female counterpart with equal culpability: a co-worker, an old flame, maybe a boss or subordinate.  And if major scandals are that rare among famous Alpha males, who vastly outnumber their alpha-female counterparts--can you name a single female athlete of our era who receives sustained attention at the level of Tiger Woods or a leading NFL or NBA player?-- no wonder it hasn't cropped up much among the think ranks of A-list women.

The second reason concerns the path to power in terms of public approval. I read a study years ago that said that there were far fewer female governors than male governors but that on the whole, female governors had higher approval ratings. The study's conclusion was that in America, women seeking power are an anomaly or cause for suspicion. When they run, the public vetting process tends to occur before they get elected or ascend to their high perch, while many men are able to coast in on charisma or reputation. Thus, once women have been approved by the public, they tend to already be squeaky-clean.  On an eyeball, nonscientific level, it bears out: we often elect women like Kathleen Sebellius or Claire McCaskill who radiate competence and respectability. While we elect many men like that as well, we are more likely to elect men like Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, John Edwards and Spitzer who also have an aggressive charm or tough-guy presence that may go hand in hand with Casanova-ish tendencies. This is true even in sports; our female sports heroes are teen-queen gymnasts and skaters or tough female athletes whom we de-sexualize--but our male sports heroes tend to be dominant in testosterone-laden activities and we revere them as godlike men on earth.

A Post-60's North American Culture of Male-Bashing...

...might also have something to do with it...

It is next to unthinkable for the well-meaning press and media to publicly expose a power-woman's dirty sexual laundry. Anyone who tries would probably come under immediate fire and be demonized as Sexist.
America for the last 40 years or so seems to have accepted the notion that Men are childish and that their sexuality is immature, while it is equally assumed that Women's sexuality is infused with an automatic sense of maturity and constructive impulse.
We have been emasculated as a culture and are ready to accept that Men think with their penises ( whatever that means ) while if one were to suggest that Women think with their ovaries, swift punishment would follow.

Emasculation is the key, here. Feminine emancipation in the West almost inevitably requires some element of castration, and in the case of the likes of Tiger Woods, or any other famous male currently being detained or otherwise humiliated publicly for his sexual interests, the true object seems to be to help break the Masculine Sexual Ego.

Is it working?
Any man or woman living outside of America will tell you that it seems to be.

Sara is no weak sister when it comes to sexual and political bedfellows. Condoleeza Rice is no bum either, I didn't say she makes a good politician, I say she's hot whether she's rot or not is not the pot I'm cooking. As a personality she is 100% goon!

Amy Goodman is cute cuddly and sweet as a person but her depth could use a little dredging. As for boyfriends on the side, who cares isn't it her business? She damn sure is powerful.

Nancy Pelosi is powerful by accident. Does she jump the aids? (male or female) and who gives a rats patoots? That she isn't representing her constituency is her major sin.

And for that matter why is any of these womens sex life any of the business of the press or the private person, unless you claim she's raping people. A fact not in evidence. If you are going to pilory these women do it because they have not kept their word. Their business practices are bad or lacking honesty. Not because you think they may be getting off in the broomcloset.

'Why Aren't There Sleazy Sex Scandals Involving Powerful Women?'

Could it be because men are more emotionally vulnerable and prone to being manipulated by seedy whores than women are? (Now kill me with all your remarks holding up all women as being supposedly full of virtue, sugar, and spice, and all men as being dirty and nasty and manipulative pigs, etc. ... Exploration of sexual dynamics by liberal pc wimp people is so all out predictable! I mean, is it not?)

Men manipulate with their money and women manipulate with their sex appeal 'capital'. Like, duh??? alternet is so lame!

The sex drives of men and women tend to be quite different.

Obviously, that one sentence doesn't answer all questions. Obviously, some women are very frisky and most men are not like Tiger Woods!

Nevertheless, anyone who extrapolates from the fact that some women are promiscuous and some men faithful to conclude that there is no difference whatsoever between typical male and female sexual behaviors would seem to be ... so far out in political-correctness limbo to mean there's point studying their nonsense in hope of any faint glimmer of rational thought.

Hope this helps.

Women have to work so much harder and be so much better than their male competitors to achieve power that, I propose, the ones with poor impulse control (in sex or other matters) never get close. Women as a class are not immune to the temptation to court scandal: Aimee Semple McPherson is a noteworthy example from the early 20th century.

a fourth reason -- powerful women HAVE TO BE ASEXUAL

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
someone like Katherine Sebelius -- have you seen her??? she radiates competence yes, and a complete lack of sexuality. Being a woman in a man's field I know that if a gal wants to be more than someone's arm candy, she has to eliminate her sexuality. She can't be in the deposition room full of men (except the court reporter) and be her true feminine self -- even if she's the hottest and most competent thing out there. Because unlike "Legally Blonde" she will eventually be laughed out of the profession. The only way to succeed is to eliminate that part of ourselves.

That's part of why the feminist movement failed. Women had to succeed by being like men -- in that other men weren't attracted to them. And that's part of why we now live in a power-dominated, warlike state.

Only a partial answer.
Posted by: oregoncharles on Dec 28, 2009 1:48 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
A fuller answer to the question would be a list of female sex scandals. As someone noted, they're mostly in show business, mostly because that's where the most women have become highly successful.

The best answer in this post is the purely statistical one: there just aren't that many famous/powerful women, and flagrantly scandalous behavior is actually quite rare.

But that really just dodges the question. The trouble is, the pattern we see, that power and sex go together ESPECIALLY for males (I really wouldn't know, for myself), matches the pattern more or less throughout the animal kingdom, including most primates. Of course, the biggest exception, the bonobo, is also our closest relative. But chimpanzees, our other closest relative, act in just this way: the dominant males get most of the sex. Of course, female chimps also mate with as many males as they can, so as to make them potential fathers and therefore protectors. (Bonobos just mate with everybody, all the time. Sound familiar?)

There's a big caveat in any discussion like this: culture is so powerful in humans that it's very hard to separate from inherent inclinations. Maybe we act a lot like other primates because our culture evolved under the same pressures, not because our genes did.

One very real factor is that women tend to be more cautious (for whatever reason), in most areas of life. Or as another commenter pointed out, they're just better at keeping secrets. So maybe they don't flaunt it and don't get caught - nearly so often. The presorting effect that the article mentions would be a factor here.

what is the public's fascination with public figures having sex outside of marriage? and why, could someone tell me, are people still getting upset and or surprised when a public figure is caught sans pants? it's not like we haven't heard the same story with different actors all our lives. why are we so hung up on monogamy when about half of marriages end in divorce?

as to why women don't get caught as often, the only example in politics I can think of is Cathrine the Great, it's probably because they'd have more to loose. No one's going to vote for, or take orders from, a "whore."

What exactly would a prostitute be or a high end call girl. They most certainly could be considered alpha females and no doubt any woman could be just as interested in diversity as a male given tiem and opportunity. Our repressive society and religious institutionalized laws makes this difficult and one of the better failed ideas would have been the Heidi Fleiss idea of a Nev bordello for women too.

I would like to suggest that some female athletes have been sexualized and modeled for Playboy, etc. They are seen as curious anomolies: fast, strong, AND also beautiful? I wish I remembered names of tennis players, but I don't keep up with the men or women, but there is this one blond woman, I think Maria somethingoranother, and she was accused of having more fame than she deserved because her playing wasn't the best, but the media liked her because she was sexy.

On the whole, I think your biggest argument is that there are so very few women in equally powerful positions to the men in question, so it could all come down to stats.

Good solid writing, Sara. Totally buck.

The perception is where the real mess is held out. The proportions, and stats and stuff all works, it's empirical, nice easy math. The perception is where you get the real nasty shit messed up in messed up culture (I wanna say fucked up but now it just seems stoopit to use my favorite terminology). I guess I'm just cheering because someone else finally noticed the shit that I'm just so damned sick and tired of. The perception bullshit factor is just so overwrought. I mean, come on, who gives a shit?! Really... all the moralizing, pissin' and moaning about contracts and judging (mostly men, but women too... though none come to mind at the moment) and complaining and crying and obsessing and fawning and the preening and the wailing and 80 million dollar settlements if so-and-shit signs a prenup and all that crap. Honestly. Just too god dammed stoopit.

Coupla things:

Clinton doin Monica... yeah, grosses me out, but the bottom line was and is, don't frakin' care. Cared a hell of a lot more that he was screwin the 'Merkaan people with neoliberal corporate bullshit and so many do-gooder know-nothings were fawning over the cat. Idiotic.

Tiger doin' whomever... yeah, sure he's good lookin' but who gives a real shit?! Honestly, the dude play golf for fuck's... (OK I knew I couldn't hold out for long)... sake. SNORE-FEST! But he's good at it, so yay for him. Whom he's sleepin' with is his own personal shitstorm and I don't friggin' care.

People fuss too damned much about rich people. Rich people are the problem with our society and it ain't got nothun to do with whom' is diddlin' whom. Don't fuckin' care. [snore]

I had one observation though:

...but our male sports heroes tend to be dominant in testosterone-laden activities and we revere them as godlike men on earth.

Okay maybe that's true for the ave 'Merkaaner, but come on, Landycakes (LAG), Cristiano Ronaldo (Man U, now some place in Espagna, Real Madrid?), David frakin'-Beckham?! These guys are not what I'd call "testosterone laden"... well okay maybe Becks because he's gotten a lot pissier about the slightest contact here in the swampleague MLS--a league I love cuz it's here and I can go drink beer and sing and chant and all that shit, but it's still a swamp league, on the rise, but ya know... it's a league where SFP and VC are the send-off norms for the only reason that rich owning-class club coaches made them that way and we have only now enough pro-referee talent who have the stones to pull the red and send the skill-deficient babies off when they infringe on the LOTG.

*sigh*

Show me the female tiger woods and I'll still be uninterested... well, not at first but after a few minutes of daydreaming fantasy I'll quit and go back to working for a fuckin' living, completely unimpressed and apathetic about lady so and so doing whoiswhatsit. People need to lay off the moral high horse. Period. You don't know shit about nobody else's bedroom (or backseat or whereever anyway. So quit yer judgment Puritanical horseshit. Just quit it. Stop. Now. Please.

Nothing New Under the Sun

Let's not forget such famous courtesans as Barbara Palmer, Nell Gwynne, Louise de Keroualle (mistresses of Charles II of England, who, besides sharing his bed, had a great deal of influence upon English politics), Marie Duplessis (a famous call girl of the 1840's who inspired the novel "Camille"), and Tamar of the Bible who, having been widowed with no children, tricked her father-in-law into having sex with her, he assuming that she was a prostitute...oh, since we are on the Bible, how about Lot's daughters who got him drunk and had sex with him so the family line could continue? (All of these acts, apparently, approved by God, although I never hear any of these verses read from the pulpit in any church I have attended. )

That business about how men think with their penises and women only want babies needs to stop, and stop now. That line of thinking does a disservice to both men and women, prevents any true understanding between the sexes, and encourages harmful stereotypes which limit the ability of both men and women to achieve their goals and help others. Peace on earth in 2010 (Yeah, when pigs fly.) But Happy New Year to you all anyway.

If there were not differences in men's and women's approaches to sex, there would either be no brothels, or a flourishing trade in paid sex for both genders. I do not know why this is not so, but I know that it's been that way for several thousand years. It may reflect the long-standing oppression of women, but I think it reflects gender characteristics as well. The article does not acknowledge that.

It's not the Morals - it's the Hormones, Silly

Men have testosterone. That gives them the urge to copulate with any available and stimulating orifice without regard to prior agreements.

Women have progesterone, which is similar, but instead, gives them the urge to nest, to be hugged - to be available for copulation. After all, without the hunter/prey system we have, how would early cavemen have known those beings who look different than they, were actually a different sex of the same species?

And Cougars? Now women get estrogen patches which contain testosterone to boost their libido.

Is it any wonder they start prowling like men?

Try as they might, feminists can't change hormones. Otherwise, all men would be already be Saints and immune from temptation,.

A Post-60's North American Culture of Male-Bashing...

Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
...might also have something to do with it...

And that's part of why we now live in a power-dominated, warlike state.

...sex scandals along the lines of Eliot Spitzer, Tiger Woods or Wilt Chamberlain...Besides the three above, and maybe Bill Clinton, I can't think of more than a handful of famous men who cheated so often with so many women.

What was his sex scandal? Just because he had a lot of sex? He was never married. Get your facts straight before you write an article.
