237 Reasons Why Women Have Sex

Drugs, money, revenge, because it's fun -- those are just a few of the reasons women have sex, according to a new book that interviewed 1,006 women from around the world.

Do you want to know why women have sex with men with tiny little feet? I am stroking a book called Why Women Have Sex. It is by Cindy Meston, a clinical psychologist, and David Buss, an evolutionary psychologist. It is a very thick, bulging book. I've never really wondered Why Women Have Sex. But after years of not asking the question, the answer is splayed before me.

Meston and Buss have interviewed 1,006 women from all over the world about their sexual motivation, and in doing so they have identified 237 different reasons why women have sex. Not 235. Not 236. But 237. And what are they? From the reams of confessions, it emerges that women have sex for physical, emotional and material reasons; to boost their self-esteem, to keep their lovers, or because they are raped or coerced. Love? That's just a song. We are among the bad apes now.

Why, I ask Meston, have people never really talked about this? Alfred Kinsey, the "father" of sexology, asked 7,985 people about their sexual histories in the 1940s and 50s; Masters and Johnson observed people having orgasms for most of the 60s. But they never asked why. Why?

"People just assumed the answer was obvious," Meston says. "To feel good. Nobody has really talked about how women can use sex for all sorts of resources." She rattles off a list and as she says it, I realise I knew it all along: "promotion, money, drugs, bartering, for revenge, to get back at a partner who has cheated on them. To make themselves feel good. To make their partners feel bad." Women, she says, "can use sex at every stage of the relationship, from luring a man into the relationship, to try and keep a man so he is fulfilled and doesn't stray. Duty. Using sex to get rid of him or to make him jealous."

"We never ever expected it to be so diverse," she says. "From the altruistic to the borderline evil." Evil? "Wanting to give someone a sexually transmitted infection," she explains. I turn to the book. I am slightly afraid of it. Who wants to have their romantic fantasies reduced to evolutional processes?

The first question asked is: what thrills women? Or, as the book puts it: "Why do the faces of Antonio Banderas and George Clooney excite so many women?"

We are, apparently, scrabbling around for what biologists call "genetic benefits" and "resource benefits". Genetic benefits are the genes that produce healthy children. Resource benefits are the things that help us protect our healthy children, which is why women sometimes like men with big houses. Jane Eyre, I think, can be read as a love letter to a big house.

"When a woman is sexually attracted to a man because he smells good, she doesn't know why she is sexually attracted to that man," says Buss. "She doesn't know that he might have a MHC gene complex complimentary to hers, or that he smells good because he has symmetrical features."

So Why Women Have Sex is partly a primer for decoding personal ads. Tall, symmetrical face, cartoonish V-shaped body? I have good genes for your brats. Affluent, GSOH – if too fond of acronyms – and kind? I have resource benefits for your brats. I knew this already; that is how Bill Clinton got sex, despite his astonishing resemblance to a moving potato. It also explains why Vladimir Putin has become a sex god and poses topless with his fishing rod.

Then I learn why women marry accountants; it's a trade-off. "Clooneyish" men tend to be unfaithful, because men have a different genetic agenda from women – they want to impregnate lots of healthy women. Meston and Buss call them "risk-taking, womanising 'bad boys'". So, women might use sex to bag a less dazzling but more faithful mate. He will have fewer genetic benefits but more resource benefits that he will make available, because he will not run away. This explains why women marry accountants. Accountants stick around – and sometimes they have tiny little feet!

that their sexual motivations (& relationships/commitments) just might be based on economic or other self-interest matters helping them get along in life and you'll get either: no reply (meaning you're correct); or anger (meaning you're correct but she's unwilling to admit it And you're 'in trouble'!). Much of this behavior is motivated by their unwillingness to let go of childhood female cultural myths. If we want to be honest about sex w/each other & as a society we should do away with such mythologies. We must also strive to do away w/many of the motivations & behaviors behind sex which are dishonest. Thus this study is an important expose' that can be used too mutual benift.

fat people are more likely to stay in a relationship because no one else wants them.

Unless of course, they know where to look.
http://www.clubbounce.net/

Then again, maybe they stay in the relationship because they and/or their partner are OK with, or even (shocker!) like that they're fat.

Then again, maybe they're fat because they're in a strong relationship, and no longer worry about having a body that perfectly meets society's dictates of what sexy is supposed to look like.

And then again, maybe they stay in the relationship because they just love each other.

Fun piece. The writer's editorial style is disturbing but unsurprising. I think I've heard enough women complaining about sex in the last two decades to realize, celibacy against one's will is just the natural outcome of a shitty life.

If I ever get to have sex again, I only want to do it for fun, for bonding with another, even if only for a few hours (or minutes, I'm pretty god damned rusty, TMI, I know... and don't care). I have no interest in reproducing. Been there done that. Spent most of the time leading up to that hoohah trying NOT to get anyone pregnant (which was pure unmitigated hell given all the crazy women I seemed to attract). I wonder how in the hell and old fart's supposed to find a decent woman that actually likes sex for its own sake and doesn't hate men in the process. Seems like a tall order in an impossible world.

It's intriguing, and wondering with the book on order, how many anti-male reasons there are in there... *sigh* being celibate is a major downer. But man, seems like those that are having sex are really riding a pretty nasty fence with all the man-hate out there. Maybe it's not so bad... being sexless.

Who wants to date a Male Stripper!?

Myself and two co-conspirators found ourselves as the "dessert" to a very nice gal's Bachelorette party last night. I had the unique opportunity to watch the event from the sidelines. These women looked like sex starved men eating machines. They were groped and did some groping, it looked like it could have turned into that wicked scene from Spartacus.

We live in a very specialized, controlled world, that dictates our lives from the cradle to the grave. This particular party was dominated by nurses, and I have come to find out, that nurses are, by far, the most wildest sub set of sexually craved women I have had the pleasure of dealing with. Life and Death is a part of the "Daily Routine", and when you have the chance to see how life can come and go.....Why not get plowed and possibly engage in some "good times".
By the end of the night, the dancer's had their tongues in at least half a dozen women, and one disappeared for a little while...The sexual energy that is created in these moments is incredible to watch. I can only imagine how liberated the women sexuality has become, with the ability to take pleasure in the physical satisfaction of life fleeting moments....

I had a friend once tell me...."we all pay for sex"...it's just a matter of time or money. I guess the key is to invest in a man/ woman that will not lose sight of their dreams and passions. I have found the most beautiful people are....the ones who live life with no regrets...chasing their dreams like a band of wild horses, and never give up in the eternal newness that every day brings. I suppose it really about understanding who we really are, and what we really want in our lives.

Here's to Visualizing World Orgasm!

I suppose that life can be mundane at times, and the thrill of

evolution of sex roles
Posted by: bukboy on Sep 30, 2009 7:33 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I think that the major difference between men and women in terms of practice, is that men have specialized (on average) as the economy and progress units of a society, and women as the nurturers with the majority of responsibility for reproduction for the next generation.

Both men and women's most important biological function is to reproduce into the next generation. Using their superiority to control their prospects for breeding partners.

Maximum control over gene selection in men would exerted over the ability for best compensation for reproduction, whereas in women best gene selection would be over best ability to secure a male to provide, not necessarily to breed with. This is probably the reason why men do not tolerate infidelity in women, but women do in men. (because the child may not be the mans, but it definitely is the womens)

In any case the best way to provide compensation for reproduction is to follow the economy/progress route men have followed.
But I think that the evolutionary benefit of specializing ever more in the economic/progress route, has forced men to be profoundly but unconsciously tied to a strong dependency on sex. (Or maybe thats just me )

Whereas the pressures on women are different, having a monopoly on child birth, and being able to be economically viable by themselves to some degree, they are not necessarily dependent on the products that men specialise in, and hence there is no reason for the same bond, which in men is caused by the need for ever more economic/progress prowess, to develop.

Hence being in a superior tactical position, not having as deep an instinct for sex, (but instead a much stronger one for children) Women have instead specialized in providing what the men don't do, i.e. nurturing, pleasing, and also manipulation, as a means to get superior economic benefits.

I think this is the base reason for the difference between how men and women use sex.

Men use sex (mostly, but instinctively to satisfy a very basic need) to feel good,
Women use sex to trade the good feelings men need for things that men produce, to satisfy their very base need, having children, which is less correlated with sex than it is for men.

Let's talk about that Double Standard Now!
Posted by: antonius116 on Sep 30, 2009 2:06 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]

Men don't have the luxury to USE sex for luring an attractive woman into a relationship, and they don't have the luxury to use sex (with an attractive woman) to obtain drugs, money or a promotion.

So why do women get upset with this so-called double-standard of promiscuous men being considered studs and promiscuous women being called sluts??? It is a double-standard because you're trying to compare apples and oranges.

I think that in truth there are as many reasons for a woman to copulate as there are woman. The question about why is a period called a period reminded me that a period is about a month long and in Spanish it is called 'el mes' the month. I must be very bored to read such literature. Shame on me.

A point that should have been made more clearly...
Posted by: jontv on Oct 1, 2009 12:38 PM

...is that human beings are complicated, and so we should expect that many of these motivations are likely to be in operation at the same time. I think that people tend to think reductively about human behavior -- like there is one primary reason for it. When we are choosing to do something, we may not always be aware of all our own motivations, or have a clear view of what motivations are decisive in any particular decision.

But I found the article interesting, if not terribly illuminating.

Personally, it´s not worth the time to be in a relationship with a man anymore. Even if a woman tries to be available, loving, understanding, and all those things men claim to want from a woman, the males will still seek outside women, saying they really love their mates, but are ´bored´, or they have needs. Most are clueless on how this affects their women and are shocked when their mates leave them. If a woman needs a man for money or babies, then I can understand staying with one...but to be together as mature partners who are faithful to each other, I don´t see that happening too often.

A point that should have been made more clearly...

...is that human beings are complicated, and so we should expect that many of these motivations are likely to be in operation at the same time. I think that people tend to think reductively about human behavior -- like there is one primary reason for it. When we are choosing to do something, we may not always be aware of all our own motivations, or have a clear view of what motivations are decisive in any particular decision.

But I found the article interesting, if not terribly illuminating.

Every Alternet reader knows that women don't have sex but are consciously and repeatedly RAPED via the use of intimidation, degradadation and persecution by a vicious Patriarcal System that seeks to dominate, subjugate and enslave women for the selfish whim and disgusting pleasure of Male Chauvinist Pigs!!!!!!!!

I always assumed it's because it happens on a regular periodical time table.

I personally do not care that love is a biochemical meeting of 'good genes' and Is temporary insanity. There's nothing 'wrong' w/any insanity unless someone is likely to be physically injured. If most/all people were simultaneously in the initial stages of This insanity the world would be a much happier, kinder, peaceful & yes, productive place. True Religion | Tiffany Jewellery

Not worth it

Personally, it´s not worth the time to be in a relationship with a man anymore. Even if a woman tries to be available, loving, understanding, and all those things men claim to want from a woman, the males will still seek outside women, saying they really love their mates, but are ´bored´, or they have needs. Most are clueless on how this affects their women and are shocked when their mates leave them. If a woman needs a man for money or babies, then I can understand staying with one...but to be together as mature partners who are faithful to each other, I don´t see that happening too often.
