One in four men in South Africa have admitted to rape and many confess to attacking more than one victim, according to a study that exposes the country's endemic culture of sexual violence.

Three out of four rapists first attacked while still in their teens, the study found. One in 20 men said they had raped a woman or girl in the last year.

South Africa is notorious for having one of the highest levels of rape in the world. Only a fraction are reported, and only a fraction of those lead to a conviction.

The study into rape and HIV, by the country's Medical Research Council (MRC), asked men to tap their answers into a Palm Pilot device to guarantee anonymity. The method appears to have produced some unusually frank responses.

Professor Rachel Jewkes of the MRC, who carried out the research, said: "We have a very, very high prevalence of rape in South Africa. I think it is down to ideas about masculinity based on gender hierarchy and the sexual entitlement of men. It's rooted in an African ideal of manhood."

Jewkes and her colleagues interviewed a representative sample of 1,738 men in South Africa's Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

Of those surveyed, 28% said they had raped a woman or girl, and 3% said they had raped a man or boy. Almost half who said they had carried out a rape admitted they had done so more than once, with 73% saying they had carried out their first assault before the age of 20.

The study, which had British funding, also found that men who are physically violent towards women are twice as likely to be HIV-positive. They are also more likely to pay for sex and to not use condoms.

Any woman raped by a man over the age of 25 has a one in four chance of her attacker being HIV-positive.

One in 10 men said they had been forced to have sex with another man. Many find it difficult to report such attacks to the police in subcultures where the concept of homosexuality is taboo.

South Africa's government has been repeatedly criticised for failing to address the crisis. Only 7% of reported rapes are estimated to lead to a conviction. Jewkes said: "There's been a lot of concern about the way the criminal justice system works, because it's still woeful."

Before his election as president, Jacob Zuma stood trial for the rape of a family friend. His supporters demonstrated at the court house, verbally attacked his accuser and sang "burn the bitch, burn the bitch". Zuma was eventually acquitted.

Jewkes added: "The social space for debating these gender issues is now smaller than it was a few years ago. We need our government to show political leadership in changing attitudes. We need South African men, from the top to the grassroots, to take responsibility."

Anti-rape campaigners said the shocking figures demonstrated the need for reform. Dean Peacock, co-director of the Sonke Gender Justice project, said: "We need to make sure the criminal justice system is held to account. We have lots of discussion in this country, but not enough action is taken to ensure that perpetrators will face consequences."

Zuma, a polygamist, was criticised for emphasising his Zulu tribal identity and singing militant songs during this year's election campaign. He made comments that outraged anti-Aids and gender campaigners.

Peacock added: "We're at a complicated moment in South African history with revived traditionalism and there's a danger of gender transformation being lost.

"We hear men saying, 'If Jacob Zuma can have many wives, I can have many girlfriends.' The hyper-masculine rhetoric of the Zuma campaign is going to set back our work in challenging the old model of masculinity."

Carrie Shelver, an activist with People Opposing Women Abuse, said: "Generally there's a deficit of understanding and commitment to women's rights by the leadership of this country. It's simply not on people's agenda."

A report published by the trade union Solidarity earlier this month said that one child is raped in South Africa every three minutes, with 88% of rapes going unreported. It found that levels of child abuse in South Africa are increasing rapidly.

i would expect this from the Guardian, not from Alternet

This article has serious issues with it.

Before i go on, i'd like to state that I am not doubting whether or not 1/4 Men in SA commit rape. I dont know if it is or isnt true nor am I trying to debase the seriousness of this issue. So as not to be misinterpreted: Rape is clearly a serious issue.

Firstly, it says nothing about the actual survey. For instance the survey's quality, the possible problems with using a 'palm pilot' to conduct a survey when some people may not even know how to read, and the fact that KZN and Eastern Cape are the only areas where the survey was conducted making it unrepresentable for the rest of South Africa. These are all serious (but obvious) issues that are ignored.

Secondly, and just as problematic, there is a complete lack of understanding of the causes of this issue from either the Medical Research Council or the Guardian journalist quoting them. Considering SA's history, this lack of understanding borders on racism as it unfairly singles out African traditions as the cause. Saying "It's rooted in an African ideal of manhood" is another way of saying: "we need to educate and civilise them". The actual truth is that this problem comes directly from colonialism, Apartheid, and the missionary zeal with which they were carried out. Much of the 'ideal's of manhood' spoken about was actually brought in by the missionaries who instituted new forms of male dominated hierarchies. In addition to this, inequality (as well as the history driving it) is one of the key drivers of crime (including rape) in SA.

I'm not going to go through a whole thesis about this. However, as an news source that claims to be progressive, Alternet should be much more careful about posting crap from mainstream news outlets.

the "freedom" struggle in S. Africa was carried out in a brutal, violent, murderous way by the pro-Soviet ANC. Even under the strict control of the Africkaners. S. African black males raped their own women frequently and occasionally white women.

The English or the Afrikaners did not "make" the hapless blacks used sexual violence. The war launched by the ANC was about money and wealth. Who gains; who loses? Who loses in the long run will be South African blacks.

Whites and the productive Indian community will leave in the next several years. Black violence against whites soars. Rapes are part of the immature black impulse deficit.

When the whites leave, and European investment dries up, the miserable condition of most blacks in S. Africa will continue and worsen. Maybe the S.African blacks can solicit their Russian or Chinese friends for assistance. Can you see the pragmatic Chinese pouring development money and AIDS assistance to the sexually frantic, undisciplined black S. Africans?

Also, Chinese influence and/or dominance would mean that perpetually horny and violent S. African black men would have to work hard, and keep their mouths and zippers shut. Probably too much for them and most Alternet backers of black perversion in South Africa. Very few blacks in S.Africa are like Nelson Mandela.

Too bad. Instead they elect a promiscous liar like Jacob Zuma.

Look at (if you can find them) good current rape statistics for the USA

Along with our impressive murder statistics, you will find that rape in the USA has a long tradition that is still alive and well. White men have been raping away along with their invasions and their slavery for. . .probably as long as white men have existed on the earth. It is a significant, but conveniently overlooked, under-mentioned, under-researched, and still under-reported dimension of America and its history.

Let's not be the ones to throw stones at Africa. America is a house of glass.

Under the feminist state patronized doctrine, Aka, the avowed communist throwback to rejuvenated totalitarian socialism. All males are rapists and all females who have sex with males are raped. Primarily promoted and marketed to the feminist consumer by the great communist Bettima Friedan. True Americans should be examining this badly produced press release for what it is. Dual ass politics. No datasets, the 1700 interviewee's probably conducted at brothel exits in Johanesberg and worse funded by the state. As usual 'we have 'reliable' sources', not any 'facts'. Just as here, a Hollywood actress and some burnt out self promoted federally funded Yes people. Promoting the very same articles, wonky statistics and venomous male hating props. Fully one third of this nations wealth has been misdirected into secretive unaccountability squandered for the last three decades at least. In pursuit of a better NWO. The reality for feminists of the type necessary for state growth is you need taxpayers and revenue sources for employment. This BS will stop and worse. there is a hierarchical totem pole created by feminism itself which is self evident even here. In the future guess who ends up at the bottom and worse. Look to the East european and Russian models to have a little dejavu insight of things to come. Kids become throw away, females become worthless, ignored, and males create an economic void that females can never fill. Unless you work for the government of course which on anything but paper technically we now all do. Even the church and judiciary.

A load of codswallop!!!....

What a crock! I work for an IT company in South AFrica with 84 colleagues, 25 of which are women and the rest male. When I read this article I conducted a snap survey on this report by email. I individually asked the males if they had ever raped anybody in their lives, couching this as a community safety improvement initiative aimed at teaching ourselves about this horrendous crime and how we can affirm youngsters towards NOT raping and how to make responsible decisions. The response was an overwhelming NO, with a great interest in being involved in this type of initiative. From the women, no rape yet among them, but a fear of that happening to them was resoundingly expressed. So where does the 1 in 4 male figure mentioned in this article come from? I want us to stick to the facts not hype bullshit! It incenses me when people write false reports about us, especially when there are generalisations being passed around as based on scientific data? That's being disingenious and malicious. Can the authors of this report tell the difference? It is not worth the paper it is written on, and by saying this I am not condoning or downplaying the scourge of crime in our country especially rape. To say 1 in 4 males in SA have raped is duplicitous and mendacious. Put bluntly, it is a crock of shit! The researchers and authors of this report must open themselves to scrutiny and interrogation by us SA males, can they do that? As we say here in Cape Town, this report is good for one thing only, as a smeerlap!!

why is this in the sex & relationships section?

I don't understand, because rape is NOT SEX, and there is no RELATIONSHIP between a criminal and a victim. It's really indicative of how easily glossed over this horrendous crime is in this society that whoever categorized this article equates rape with sex. Like it's another pesky quirk of dating.

Completely unacceptable and disgusting. Have some f***ing decency to think about what you're doing while you're doing it.

UNREAL

According to feminist doctrine ' All males rape, and female sex with a male is male rape'. Therefore everyone must be turned into a female or lesbian and think like one. After again according to feminist doctrine 'No woman is sexually complete unless she practices homosexuality.' My sympathies to SA, this should be good stuff for regressing into not the new progressive era but simply churning out a nation of butt bandits. Where males will be taught there is no gender difference to using the unnatural orifice.
