Fake Boobs, Donald Trump and Miss USA: Why Do Trashy Beauty Pageants Still Exist?

By Lauren Bans, AlterNet. Posted May 22, 2009.

The latest tabloid controversy over the Miss USA pageant yet again begs the question: Why is anyone taking this stuff seriously?

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

If you haven't heard of Carrie Prejean by now, well, consider yourself lucky.

The 21-year-old beauty queen made a name for herself at this year's Miss USA pageant when she uttered a barely decipherable three sentences in response to a question about gay marriage. Through a uranium smile, she voiced her support for "opposite marriage" -- now an Urban Dictionary entry meaning marriage between a man and a woman -- because that's what her family believes in ("no offense to anybody!").

So there you have it: a pageant finalist invoked a bigoted viewpoint in a pageant-vacuous response. Is it really such a shock that Prejean, a cog in a system where it's common practice for fathers to steer their glitzed-up daughters across a stage in what amounts to a scored debutante ball, echoed what she was "raised to believe" during her 15-second reply?

Apparently so. A media shit storm as lowbrow as a rhinestone-covered evening gown ensued, starting with Perez Hilton, the blogger who asked Miss California the question, running home to his Web cam and posting a video calling Prejean a "dumb bitch" (later during a TV interview Hilton noted he should have used the "c-word"), a response for which Entertainment Weekly anointed him "an unlikely hero."

Partially nude photos of the beauty queen were surreptitiously released to the media, prompting a tearful press conference on Prejean's part and speculation over whether Trump would let her keep her title. (There was a hyped-up press conference for that, too.)

Under the guise of responding to the controversy, Keith Olbermann and Michael Musto devoted an entire segment on MSNBC to misogynistic quips about Prejean's "performance-enhanced" body, Musto at one point nonsensically saying that the pageant must have paid "to cut off her penis."

Meanwhile, Prejean, finding new support in far-right Christian groups, told an interviewer that God was whispering in her ear that night. She was booked to host Fox & Friends for a day.

The weirdest twist of all came when the Miss California Organization leaked the news that the organization itself had paid the bill on Prejean's pre-pageant breast implants. According to Samhita Mukhopadhyay at Feministing.com, the revelation showed "that pageants aren't about highlighting women as they are or for their talents, but for their physical appearance and to make spectacle of a specific type of femininity."

The organization's admittance that it funneled money into the exterior "enhancement" of Prejean kept the ongoing controversy firmly in the spotlight -- at the expense of sacrificing any legitimacy its official criteria of promoting "savvy, goal-oriented, and aware" women may have afforded it.

In 1984, Vanessa Williams, the first black Miss America, was dethroned over nude photographs. But in 2009, Miss California USA officials were all too happy to fan the flames of tabloid controversy.

Which begs the question --  why is anyone taking this stuff seriously? And why, oh why, are we awarding political relevance to a contest that profits by showcasing women in bikinis and high heels in the first place?

The argument that pageants are outdated at best, sexist at worst, is nothing new. It has surfaced repeatedly over the past few decades, most notably at the 1968 Miss America Pageant, where the first large-scale protest of the event was staged outside the Atlantic City Convention Center. (The much-loved conservative myth of the rabid bra-burning feminist got its legs at this gathering when women tossed aprons and bras into a large bin as a symbolic disavowal of traditional femininity. None were actually lit on fire.)

The reasons for protesting Miss America as an institution were obvious: Public unrest with the Vietnam War was beginning to surface, and Miss America was on tour with the USO. The sexual revolution was under way, and the Miss America contest continued to perpetuate the virtues of an antiquated feminine ideal and a narrowly defined beauty standard.

It is too bad you chose to write this article, it just gave them more publicity.
The girls should say nothing, let it be what it is a body show. Of what relevance are world events when you spend 24/7 on oneself. I guess Prejean thought freedom of speech and choice was still allowed in America, silly her. We do not all have to believe in all mainstream thought. Why would a already lost contest even be involved in Gitmo if not to make light of what really went on there. Such silly, silly people. Never heard of any of this crap cause I choose not to watch mainstream t.v. but then it is brought to alternet. Too bad this article took up space!

that will 'win' the contest. They have little life outside the contest except for promoting themselves by the use of their beauty, real or enhanced, and their bodies. why are we surprised when they turn out to be bleach blonde, breast implanted boobs who posed for naked pictures. Miss Prejean could have been the sister of the other finalist in the contest and almost a duplicate of Mr. Trump's second wife, and we are surprised he supported her?

Beautiful women with brains - I supposed every time a left wingnut sees one they cover their eyes and scream?

If you have to ask why the pageants exist, you'll never understand the answer!

I remember watching The 700 Club one night (OK I was bored) and they had a piece about Miss America. Pat was all choked up about so much beauty. Guess looking at a woman not your wife is OK in the eyes of Jesus.

And what's with Miss Teen USA?? Why is it OK to parade young underage girls in swimsuits to pedophiles? If there was a Janet Jackson slip would that be child pornography? I mean, I could go to jail for possessing a Traci Lords collection yet seductive teens in swimsuits are OK.

And don't even start me on the little kiddy shows. People who parade that stuff deserve to be shot in the head.

My guess:

Start with a throwback to the ancient impulse of fertility rite celebration, sauteed in prurient madonna-whore sexuality, and, finally, wrap it all in a flag. Stir vigorously and try to drain out the hypocrisy and sexism before serving.

And when the show's over Mr. Pointy Head has to launder his shorts.

Duh, Because there's big bucks in it

This is a self perpetuating industry, absolutely useless to society, not in the least bit creative, so it's not art, and arguably very destructive to the participants. If there were no "beauty" pageants, little girls would not grow up wanting to be in them, and their neurotic, abusive parents would have to find some other outlet for their vicarious fantasies. You see the same thing in some families in youth sports, but at least there is some health benefit in that. All of these activities would change drastically, or completely disappear, if parents were not allowed to attend.
BUT, the bottom line with beauty pageants is that someone is making really big bucks running the shows, selling the clothes, doing the make-up and hair, running the training camps and seminars and all else that goes with it, did I say videographers, photographers, caterers....

Let's see fate tit, fake hair color, botox, collagen, a lil Liposcution too. Hell with enough money and cosmetic surgery I could be a contestant Too!
Let's not overlook the real point here- the winner of this contest Represents the Best o fthe American Woman. Limiting the 'best' to merely appearances is an insult. American woman are not just manniquins- we are living breathing intellegent,Strong and compassionate beings- far more than our mere exteriors.
There are woman around the world who admire Americna Women for our outspokenness, or Freedoms, our ability to acheive our ambitions- not just our surgically enhanced T& A!
I don't want some 'souped up' bubble headed bleach blonde to Represent the best of the American Female at Miss Universe.
such procedures should be considered illegal 'enhancements'- because they are adding to their performance. These methods are dishonest and should disqualify them from competiton- or cause a Revoking of their title if deiscovered later.
Is Trump and the judges saying an American Woman is not good enough if she hasn't been 'Tricked out' ( double meaning also intended)? We might as well call these contests 'Miss Pimped'.
give me a Break the only reason Donald allowed this girl to keep her 2nd place was to get down her pants. And where the hell is this girls parents- working out the Brides Wealth. Is mommy and Daddy counting the Cash and fame they will earn from soliciting their own daughter to the likes a Donald Trump and the Media- Take a Fucking Bow you sleazy slimmy Parental Pimps.Obviously you never encouraged her in school since she can't tell the difference between a State and a country or Nation. Keep her Dumb and Beautiful and You'll make the big Bucks ah Mom & Dad.They're Squeezing her for everything they can get too.sick and disgusting.

and Caps4Christ make a lie out of everything that "Miss" California said about standing up for that which is "normal" and "natural". Her hypocrisy, from mandating purity of form and "traditional" marriage were further tarnished by her unabashed semi-nude photos that she glories in with the remark that she will use them to defend the traditional family. What traditional family? where in the USA 1 out of 2 of every heterosexual marriages end in divorce, where child beating and sexual abuse are common with either parent or other sibling raping, sodimizing, and endangering the child? where brainwashing by demanding a rote memorization of an ideology of political philosophy is commonplace?

and many of you exhibit elitist attitudes. A count of the women in pageant management and production biz would find they vastly outnumber the men. Many pageant participants encourage their daughters to get involved. There are many 3 & 4 generation examples of pageant families. Must be just a horrid experience. The author makes a comment that the are lots of low-income families involved. So they are striving for a BETTER life for their little girl on a path that has sent many women to college. And with some experience in the pageants as an ad agency that used to do work for a national series, I don't think that low-income comment really holds up, it's not a cheap sport.

What's different than using your body as an athlete? You train and modify yourself to be what you want to be. You mouth mindless platitudes if your want to stay on your team or have endorsement deals.
Being a quality bimbo has a much social value as being a basketball star, in my opinion little different.

Begs the Question
Posted by: Jaffe on May 22, 2009 9:46 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Twice the writer incorrectly uses the clause "begs the question" to enforce the obvious point that beauty pageants are yet another spectacle which headlines cosmetic technology.

But these contests are less about official misogyny than opportunistic image-display. Male bodybuilding, such as the Mr Universe contest, is increasingly popular, mixed martial arts is nearly as popular as the NFL, and what about the World Wrestling Federation?

In each of these quasi-competitions, steroidal compounds and cosmetic enhancements are de rigueur.

Surf the 200-something channels of your TV and you'll notice the distressing homogeneity-- the majority of actresses and actors have been noticeably "enhanced." Noses, cheekbones, hair, boobs, tummies . . .

What does it all signify? The ever-closer interface of "human" and cyborg. Of actual war and video-games. Of bio-reality and cyber-"reality." Of real and virtually real.

Spectacle is metastasizing even as I stroke my mouse. Those of us who are still connected to our "God-given" biology may have to deep-six our cellphones and hide under our real-time desks, as happened during the bombing drills during the "Cold War."

"The latest tabloid controversy over the Miss USA pageant yet again begs the question: Why is anyone taking this stuff seriously?"

Well, let's see.... Biology? A man's dream of meeting a beautiful, intelligent, sexy, feminine girl next door type to marry? We like beautiful women, they like being beautiful and like the attention and opportunities that this type of exposure brings them. Trashy?!? What is this, Miss Stripper USA, with the bikini pole dancing competition?

I understand feminism and all but pulease! Nobody is forcing them, none of them have a burqua on and nobody really cares if someone with a stick up their wazzoo finds it offensive, as those nice independent and very self confident women will be more than happy to tell you, probably in more graphic detail than I will here.

Don't you have anything more important to write about? This is a waste of space.

Look at the fluff media as a whole during rough economic or war times. Its not just the Miss Universe nonsense, but look how low prime time television has gone.

This is why I listen to NPR and am seriously considering dumping the television set, since I have actually encountered a half dozen friends who have done this.

And since men seem to be the ones watching the girlie shows on television, where is the outrage?

And it wasn't Miss California Universes answer that needed to be questioned, but the overall hypocrisy of a so called conservative Christian women who makes excuses for her choices in life.

Like being underage and modeling alone with a male photographer who then has photos of her semi nude, or having breast implants, or walking around half naked in some contest.

Remember she attended a conservative Christian college that was begun by ultra conservative Christian Tim LaHaye who wrote the 'sky is falling' Left Behind book and movie series.

Over the last 25 or so years, so-called beauty pagents have been dying economicly and socially. The 'Miss America' pagent is on some 3rd rate cable channel instead of a major network one and no longer in Atlantic City. Trump was able to buy Miss USA for cheap and use to stroke his ego and promote himself.
Women have far more options of emplolyment and college money than a few beauty pagents. Demographics have changed too, so the blue-eyed, tall, blond white female is not longer the universal ideal. Far too many scandals from nude pictures to criminal beheaviors to having conservative or liberal views don't work anymore put off more possible contestants and viewers. Maybe soon, we will see the last of them die off a good death.

Why Do Pageants Still Exist? Women.

I love the posts blaming men for these pageants. A few dads send their girls to pageants, but by and far the majority of people who make these things happen are women.

Homosexuality is not a choice

For those of you claiming homosexuality is a "lifestyle", that is a false and ignorant statement. Homosexuality is not a choice. Just like you don't choose the color of your skin, you cannot choose whom you are sexually attracted to. If you can, sorry, but you are not heterosexual, you are bi-sexual. Virtually all major psychological and medical experts agree that sexual orientation is NOT a choice. Most gay people will tell you its not a choice. Common sense will tell you its not a choice. While science is relatively new to studying homosexuality, studies tend to indicate that its biological.

Gay Brain structures different
Brain Differences straights and gays
Gay, Straight Men's Brain Responses Differ
Genetics and biology
Homosexuality in twins
Gay Brain

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that homosexuality is not a choice.

And it should also be noted that:
"It is worth noting that many medical and scientific organisations do believe it is impossible to change a person's sexual orientation and this is displayed in a statement by American Academy of Pediatrics, American Counseling Association, American Association of School Administrators, American Federation of Teachers, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, American School Health Association, Interfaith Alliance Foundation, National Association of School Psychologists, National Association of Social Workers, and National Education Association."

But we don't need scientific evidence for this.

I shall ask you this. Are you male? (If not, reverse the questions to the other gender) If so, Are you sexually attracted to other men? Would you be able to enjoy sex with a man? Do you get sexual urges with a man? Do men turn you on sexually and emotionally? Could you be happy with a man sexually for the rest of your life? Does male/male porn or male sexual situations turn you on and arouse you?

If you are heterosexual, the answer should be no. Otherwise, you might either be bi-sexual or homosexual, and might want to re-evaluate your sexuality. It is well known that a lot of homophobes deny their homosexuality by being aggressive towards it, until they finally accept it. Most people know this is not a choice, and it would be ignorant claiming it so. I know a few gay people who went to a straight club when they were figuring out their sexuality, where women were putting their naked bodies all over them, giving them naked lap dances, not once did the gay men get it up or aroused. But just the picture of a naked guy gets them up easily. Tell me thats choice. Also, why would a gay person, knowing that you will have a rough time in society, knowing that you cant get married unless you live in certain places, knowing that people will pick on you for it, knowing that your closest friends and families might completely turn their back on you, choose to be gay, if they could easily be satisfied by the opposite sex? Because they can't. Simple logic there.

Those with self-esteem need not apply

This is the unspoken slogan of all these pagents yet the rhetoric is all about boosting the self-esteem of other young women. Men treat women as sex objects and women are brain-washed into believing that they must fit some "mold" of beauty and if they don't they should either get plastic surgery or find a rock and hide. Yet the "standard" of beauty keeps changing; unhealthily skinny with boy features was once in as was having "womanly" curves and large breasts. Pale skin was once in and so was brown and exotic. How is anyone supposed to learn to be comfy in their own skin if what's "in" keeps changing? The only ones afforded that luxury are men; they can be fat and bald but still accepted. Let a woman be fat and bald and people run away.

Outer beauty fades rapidly with time but inner beauty is internal; sad most people don't get that concept.

The reason why Prejean wasn't stripped of her title but Williams was is that Prejean is white and Williams is not; yet Williams is vastly prettier and more intelligent.

TROPHY WIFE TRAINING & CERTIFICATION

no kidding.

men want *certified Trophy Wives* for being sell-out fuckers.

women want to **become CERTIFIED TROPHY WIVES**...

so they can GET THE HIGHEST PRICE for their ASSES.

period.

THAT'S THE POINT of these contests: MONEY & prestige.

I mean, a girl only has about 5-10 years to GET SITUATED & plunk her ass into its REAL EARNING POTENTIAL...

before she gets her ass canned for a YOUNGER WOMAN.

The point is: she's gotta GET CERTIFIED as DESIREABLE for a RICH MAN...

& then get that divorce settlement & move onto the NEXT DUDE.

That's a whole fucking CAREER.

sick, isn't it?

Well, its an All-American heritage. be proud.

Perspective.

Some men like pageants because they get to see beautiful women. They are genetically predisposed to be attracted to beauty.
Other men like to lust after pretty women and to imagine that they might even be able to "date" them, even if that is very far-fetched.
Still others like to see hordes of girls as in a Robert Palmer video, as they really do see them as girls.
The fake boobs are a distraction to many as not all men care for those.
Trump is a businessman. He just comes up with programming to make a buck. If that means generating controversy to get some ink, then that means that he has succeeded. He probably doesn't really care about any morally uplifting values or other judgmental aspects of modern life, at least when it comes to lining his pockets. After all, look at who he has married over the years.
Now, turn to the women in the audience.
Some will turn up their noses in disgust at the flagrant objectification of women.
Others will want to see nice dresses, hairstyles, dance numbers, witty commentators or other benign aspects.
And still others will be jealous and wish that they could be beautiful and the objects of at least someone's desire.
That is a gross simplification of the human condition, but there is more than a grain of truth.
For people to get exercised about hidden agendas, conspiracies or other over-thought idiocies is just stupid.
If you don't like the show, then change the channel or do something else.
And as for all of the non-news about Carrie Prejean, who has brought up the shameful behaviour of that Hilton character? Of course, he could just be a plant in Trump's get-ratings model. But the chattering classes didn't stop to consider that, or to question his antics.
The world is better for having solid citizens like Carrie Prejean with decent values and resistance to the corruption of modern life.
