Marijuana has been used as an aphrodisiac for thousands of years.

The ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine systems used cannabis to increase libido, produce long-lasting erections, delay ejaculation, facilitate lubrication and loosen inhibitions.

Some Tantric sex practitioners drink a substance called bhang, a sort of spiced marijuana milkshake to enhance the sexual experience. According to one source, Indian prostitutes eat bhang sherbet to help them feel sexually aroused.

In 19th century Serbia, female virgins were given mixtures of lamb's fat and cannabis on their wedding night to make sex less painful. Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon and other Middle Eastern and Northern African cultures used cannabis for sexual purposes in a potent form known at kif as recently as the early 20th century.

So what exactly is it about weed that turns people on?

Besides the obvious: it heightens your senses, relaxes you and makes you feel hyper connected, there are also physiological effects.

Along with an increased heart rate, changes in blood flow and respiration, according to William Novak, author of the 1980 tome, High Culture: Marijuana in the Lives of Americans, "Neurochemistry, hormonal systems and brain regions such as the temporal lobe are affected by both marijuana and sexual arousal."

That's because THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the active ingredient in pot, not only releases dopamine in the brain -- causing the "high" -- it actually replicates the effects of a sexy little naturally occurring neurochemical called anandamide.

But pot doesn't always make sex better. For some people, it has the exact opposite effect. Which is helpful if you're a monk.

Ascetics, monks and others have used marijuana to free themselves of sexual desire. Instead of connecting them to their bodies, sexual desires, or other people, it helps them meditate.

In the context of a sexual encounter, it can be tough to focus on making your partner come when your mind is busy contemplating the meaning of life. Or if being high makes you suddenly hyper-aware of everything that is wrong with your relationship.

The effects of smoking also depend on the person's tolerance to the drug -- a couple of tokes may get one person in the mood, while another user may need to get really high in order to feel a heightened sexual awareness.

Of course, when it comes to pot, you can have too much of a good thing. Heavy, long-term marijuana use can result in low motivation -- including the motivation to have sex.

And whereas some folks report an increased libido -- in one study, men said they achieved bigger, harder erections and women said they became wetter and were more able to achieve orgasm when stoned -- others may report an inability to sustain an erection.

It is commonly believed that smoking marijuana causes reproductive system damage, having an effect on testosterone production and other hormones -- which, in turn, can affect fertility, menstruation and erectile function, among other things. Pot prohibitionists like to haul out the "pot will lower your sperm count" argument, although studies on this produce conflicting results.

It is true that the cells of the reproductive system are very high in fat, and thus absorb and hold more THC than do most other cells in the body, a factor that leads some researchers to believe pot can lower testosterone levels. Apparently, in some cases, male pot smokers have developed "man boobs" because of localized fatty deposits.

Still, according to Novak, "There have been no epidemiological studies which have shown increased infertility in marijuana-using humans, and studies of overall reproductive rates have found no reduction in reproductive rates in countries where a higher rate of marijuana use is found.''

And the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws cites study upon study indicating that reported lower sperm levels return to normal once marijuana consumption had ceased.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I personally had the best sex of my life while stoned, and my daughter was conceived under the influence (after about 4 months of trying to conceive).
If only the legal risk wasn't so atrocious in the United Fucking States.

He rolls out high speed rail, one of my Green Economy ideas, the same day he tells us torturers won't be punished.

I expect pot to be legalized.

It's prohibition is unconstitutional. I'd like to know why big business is so against us. Is it religious prohibition, or meddling in the practice of medicine without a medical license?

Since when do business owners get to make the medical decisions for their employees?

In other words, why is pot illegal? Why do businesses test for it as a part of employment and fire people who test positive? I think that is a religious prejudice.

Marijuana is good medicine for a lot of things and use doesn't have to impair ones ability at work, although that certainly is a possibility.

People can be fired for poor job performance, they don't HAVE to be preemptively picked on and drug tested just because they use an organic medicine not approved of in some people's interpretation of the bible.

That is insane, and very intrusive.

Is it justified? Is it religious persecution?

What is it?

Let's ask the folks at FOX, I know they just love the Drug War. Lets ask them why pot is illegal.

Be that as it may, there is very little as un-sexy as someone who is stonned or drunk. (for me personally anyway)

I would not permit a drunk or stoned lover to even kiss me. It is also unlikelly that I would ever be with someone who was routinelly high or drunk, it is just not my thing. (again a personal thing on my part)

So, while pot needs to be legalised and it works for some people, it is by no means a universal cure all for what ails us, especially in the bedroom.

All that crap we see advertised on late-night TV.. male enhancement drugs..... where are the female enhancement drugs? Don't need them, my orgasms are 100% stronger and longer on pot. Ladies, don't knock it until you've tried it. And there's a big difference between being with someone who's drunk, and being with someone who's high. And besides, you don't need a partner anyway to have an orgasm.

A totally unscientific and silly article

I have no idea where Josey Vogel gets her facts about Cannabis from ! Ayurvedic medicine in India is thousands of years old and is still used by millions of people all over India (and now abroad as well !).
"Bhang" is not a drink used by "Tantric sex practioners" (!). It is consumed by average Indians during the Diwali festivals also. Yes, it is mildly sedative and can contain some cannabis.
Ayurvedic physicians of India continue to use bhang to treat many medical problems, including diarrhea, epilepsy, delirium and insanity, colic, rheumatism, gastritis, anorexia, consumption, fistula, nausea, fever, jaundice, bronchitis, leprosy, spleen disorders, diabetes, cold, anemia, menstrual pain, tuberculosis, elephantiasis, asthma, gout, constipation, and malaria.

Indian texts such as the Tajni Guntu, the Rajbulubha and the Susruta list cannabis as a treatment for conditions including "clearing phlegm, expelling flatulence, inducing costiveness, sharpening memory, increasing eloquence, as an appetite stimulant, for gonorrhea, and as a general tonic."
You will notice, no where it mentions prolonged orgasm, hard erections, great sex etc. Cannabis became very popular in the '70s when the flower power generation started using it to liberate them from their age-old strict Christian upbringing and have sex with anybody anywhere without any guilt - of course in the name of "free" society.
Anyone interested in finding out more about Cannabis, its history and its medicinal propeties can read http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/1736.html

Please Alternate, spare us from such silly articles.

I would like to add one piece of advice, based on my own experience, about weed and sex, you should engage in it as soon as possible after taking weed.
It seems to me that if you wait too long before having sex, you'll be lethargic and most likely have trouble becoming aroused. That being said, if you take it within the right time window, it's AMAZING.

i don't know what it is about cannabis that brings on intense feelings of paranoia - is it really "all in the mind, you know"? or is there some chemical interaction in the brain that brings this on? back in the day, that wasn't a problem, but about 20 years ago it all changed for me. smoking made me immediately very paranoid. so it isn't a choice for me any more. any clues? anyone? anyone? bueller?

The New Reefer Madness - Slick Repackaging of Same Old Stereotypes
Posted by: stellabloo on Apr 18, 2009 9:10 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I hope Josey didn't REALLY believe that this piece would cause us all to pick up the phone and immediately demand free sex, I mean legal pot from our government representative?

It was this sort of reefer madness that led to cannabis prohibition in the first place - the spectre of white women lured into sexual bondage by pot-smoking latinos and blacks.

The world's Number One Date-Rape Drug is and always has been alcohol. Actually, it's very difficult to have wild and spontaneous sex with strangers unless alcohol is involved at some point. I've been smoking pot for 27 years and I've been sober for 20 years and you'll just have to trust me on this one.

So I'm supposed to rely on some unnamed sources and the author of a popular book? You know with a title like "High Culture" that it's really designed to sell copy among the converted. How about the Merck Index, the Canadian LeDaine Commission on the Use of Non-Recreational Drugs and or the findings of Harvard medical researcher Dr. Lester Grinspoon?

Dr. Grinspoon, incidentally, started researching pot under the Nixon administration. He admits that there was money in it at the time. He not only completely changed his stance (although it was many years before he tried smoking pot himself) but continues to document his research even though the funding is long gone.

http://www.marijuana-uses.com/

"It is commonly believed that smoking marijuana causes reproductive system damage, having an effect on testosterone production and other hormones."

Yes, it is commonly believed that pot will drive you crazy, cause you to have crazy sex like an animal and then shrivel up your gonads to blow away in the breeze along with your brain. Nice way to perpetuate the stereotype. In fact marijuana is a mild tonic that some jamaican mothers give to their children before school because it will help keep their energy level up through a long day and help them to concentrate better. Marijuana is the human equivalent of catnip, nothing less and certainly nothing more, and I don't see the SPCA frantically lobbying Washington for an end to the shameless abuse of cats everywhere.

"Apparently, in some cases, male pot smokers have developed "man boobs" because of localized fatty deposits."

This is the tip-off, friends - this is not journalism but a sop thrown to the "free the herb" crowd, a feel-good piece of fluffery at best designed to make pot smokers feel good about having sex while high, and at worst intended to force serious discussion of marijuana and hemp laws back to the lunatic fringe. BEER grows man-boobs, people, BEER! Put that in your pipe, honey - you know where you can put that pipe :.(

Couch potatoes

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Vogels writes: Heavy, long-term marijuana use can result in low motivation -- including the motivation to have sex.

She doesn't cite any source for that claim. I am a heavy, long-term cannabis user [notice she uses the slang term rather than the scientific name]. I earned two university degrees, including a law degree, while consuming cannabis daily for medical reasons. I never experienced low motivation related to my cannabis use. In fact, it is just the opposite, and I know many people who would agree with me.

Couch potatoes are couch potatoes, and their lack of motivation has a lot more to do with their own nature than any inherent property of cannabis. In other words, if you are lazy and unmotivated to start with, cannabis will facilitate your laziness. But if you are already motivated to get things done, cannabis will facilitate that as well.

As far as sex goes, my experience is that it is a fantastic aid to help prevent premature ejaculation and prolong erections, as well as enhance senses and intimacy.

Seventy-two now and still GIB after a sex life of sixty years, I can only wonder at a society and nation of people who is so screwed up (you should pardon the expression . . .) that it doesn't still know how to mate. Not only are we the only mammal on the planet that has forgotten how to raise its kids, we need all kinds of chemical assistance while we're making them.

And it all relates: look around and you find everything else you young folks control as screwed up as your sex. But then, I suppose it's all the fault of us, your elders - we should have taught you . . .

But, then, you wouldn't have listened - WOULD you?

I'd also advise a daily dose of another ayurvedic herb--ashwaganda (for men, the female equivalent is ). It's an adaptogen--you won't notice any effects until you're having sex. Unlike yohimbe and other "aphrodisiacs," herbal and phramaceutical, it's not a vasilodilator--absolutely no side effects (racing heart, etc.). It's also a general all-round tonic. Find the 16:1 compound, up the recommended dose, and take some more (pref with milk) a couple of hours before sex.

As for weed--hands down THE number one sexual enhancement tool. I could list and sing its praises for pages in that regard. I won't even bother having "drunk sex"--sloppy, spastic, and all too often just plain sad. Weed has exactly the opposite effect--senses are heightened, not dulled; everything is intensified, not numbed.

There's more on weed here and there on my site:

Oh you poor things. It seems to have escaped your notice that billions of people go about the business of having great sex and reproducing without any kind of artificial stimulus whatever. I fail to see how a schizophrenic episode in any way enhances the sexual act. Just ask any mental health worker/professional how many people are admitted per day as a result of smoking marijuana. Time to grow up and get a brain you folk, before it is too late. The next generation are depending on you for survival of this planet. A drug crazed mob living in the twilight zone is not our hope for the future and it will not be theirs either. You have a duty and responsibility to get your act together and get it together now. Stop being a pawn of the right wing, they love nothing better than to see you all off your faces, totally incapable of resistance or organization towards a better tomorrow.

IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE CANNABIS YOU SMOKE

Many years ago, when I was a young man in the Florida Keys sailing all manner of wind machines, marijuana was so plentiful that I kept 5 different kinds on hand ranging from "shop pot" to "2 toke." With shop pot, one got high but never stoned, so one could work with power tools without losing fingers. After two hits of two-toke, one was so bloody stoned all one could do was sit around like a dazed goat listening to music. "Baby, are we getting ready to have sex or did we just have sex? Really? Was is good?" There was also what we called "sea weed." Smugglers fearing capture would sometimes jetison bales of Columbian which washed up on shore. Ahhhh! Bliss! Hallucinogenic mushrooms go well with sex, too, and they're found all over Florida pastures after rain.

One of the reasons I stopped smoking in my 20s was a world class model told my sister she wanted to meet me.When the introductions were made, they wanted to smoke a joint ,and once stoned all I could do was sit there stoned, unable to speak, the chance slipped away.Asan enhancement for an established connection it as pretty OK. `Nowhre near as good as ecsstasy,or Ghb,both of hich I had to stop using when they became illegal. The latter specifically enhances tactile sensation, really wonderful with a willing partner. Anyone who actually used thsi for date rape is an incredible idiot as well as being a worthless scumbag.Because with a willing partner the ghb could add to really great sex, rather than virtual necrophilia-yuck.Like all drugs, recreational or medicinal optimum dosage is crucial.

Just another reason to legalize pot!

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
In my experience, pot is a very effective aphrodisiac when used occasionally and in moderation. "Shot-gunning" (sharing the smoke through deep kissing) is a wonderful prelude to love-making as it works along with the herb to enhance the sense of intimacy and connectedness. Oh! For a one-hitter and a beautiful woman! sigh.

Big pharma is dead set against legalization for oobvious "bottom line reaons." Who would want to spend money for Viagra or Cialis if they could grow their own organic "enhancers" for free?

If big Pharma (or Big Oil or Big Whatever) can't obtain centralized control of production and distribution they simply demonize the "green" alternatives that would make everyone's life better.

Excuse me but this article is merely the opinion of one person. From experience I can tell you that unless both people are stoned, sex stinks. For a stoned person I guess they think that all experiences are heightened. For the sober person who wants to have a real love experience, forget it.

I do believe that pot is a valuable tool for people who are in pain or suffering from cancer or other diseases. But if one is in search of a real love session, try it straight.

A good friend of mine tried to convince me to try pot, saying that it was really terrific and that it made life in technicolor. My reply was that he should look around. He would see that life was already in technicolor and I liked it that way.

Why would you create potentially NEGATIVE effects for yourself by smoking pot to enhance your sexual experience? Is the risk worth it? Even if the studies of negative effects are conflicting, why take the chance?

I would say it is much safer to rely on your body's own natural ability to arouse itself. Why do you need to put something else between you and the experience?

Also - what if you come to 'rely' on pot in your sexual life?
