It's Time to Recommit to the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

Throughout my career as an actress and activist, I have learned that determination and focus are the most valuable tools in achieving success.  And yet, in our fight against HIV/AIDS here in the U.S., we seem to have lost our collective focus.  In fact, late last year, we learned that we have 40 percent more new infections in this country than we previously thought.  This February 7, the 9th annual National Black AIDS Awareness Day, is the perfect time for us to recommit ourselves to defeating the AIDS epidemic here at home, as it continues to strike some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

The incredible increases in the effectiveness of antiretroviral drugs and expanded testing and treatment throughout the country have, without a doubt, saved thousands upon thousands of lives, and prevented an incredible amount of new infections.  But we cannot allow ourselves to rest on our laurels at this point.  HIV is a tenacious disease that thrives on ignorance and complacency.  Once we start thinking that we have defeated HIV here in the U.S., or that it is only a problem in the developing world, we begin to lose the fight.

Instead, we must turn a critical eye inward, and face the fact that HIV/AIDS has reached crisis levels among the Black population of the U.S.  The statistics are startling.  While making up 13 percent of the population, Blacks make up half of all new HIV/AIDS cases, according to the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  One analysis shows that a black male in this country has a 1 in 16 lifetime chance of acquiring HIV and for black women it is 1 in 30.  The impact of HIV is greater among Blacks than any other racial or ethnic group, with an HIV incidence rate that is seven times higher than Whites, and almost three times higher than Latinos. As a country, we should be not just startled by these numbers, we should be ashamed.

The reasons for this severe racial disparity are complex; certainly, a lack of community resources, poverty, homophobia, the plight of incarceration, limited access to health services, and education all play a part.  Additionally, the impact of racism and discrimination in this epidemic cannot be ignored.  Still, there are a number of steps we can take to begin to fight back.

We should begin by reinvesting in the behavioral prevention programs that we know work.  During the last several years, even as the epidemic took its increasing toll on communities of color, the federal budget for prevention actually shrunk.  We will never beat HIV/AIDS if that is the approach we take.  Instead, we need significant investment in prevention and an end to ideological obstacles that feed the epidemic.

A good place to start in restoring integrity to our domestic prevention efforts is in ending ineffective abstinence-only-until-marriage programs.   SIECUS' research shows that blacks are likely disproportionately affected by these programs: the region with the highest rates of HIV/AIDS among Blacks is in the South which not coincidentally also receives nearly half of all federal abstinence-only-until-marriage funds.  In fact, of the top ten states with the highest rates of HIV/AIDS among blacks, all but one are located in the South.  And what do these programs do to help stem this disease?  They purposefully deny people the information they need to protect themselves from acquiring HIV when the ideals of abstinence and marriage fail.  And they fail.  Often.  But, these programs are prohibited from discussing the effectiveness of condoms in preventing infection or discussing them in a positive light in any way, even for young people who may be sexually active.  At the same time, we know that a comprehensive approach to sex education works and reduces the sexual risk behaviors that lead to HIV infection and the federal government must begin to invest in this approach.

Education is a necessary weapon in our arsenal to defeat HIV/AIDS, but on its own is not wholly sufficient.  We must also continue to break down the old barriers that have prevented progressive groups from joining efforts and working together.  Poverty, sex education, and HIV/AIDS organizations all have a stake in defeating the HIV epidemic in the Black community and we must work together if we are to be successful.

National Black AIDS Awareness Day was established to increase awareness in the Black community on HIV/AIDS prevention and testing, and also to decrease the stigma around the disease.  We honor that today and raise our voices to say change is needed.  Thankfully, President Obama has pledged his support to tackle the domestic epidemic and to begin this important work through a public-private partnership that creates a National AIDS Strategy.  Make no mistake, this important plan must address the issues of prevention and the increasingly racial path this disease is taking.

I work with people who have HIV in many different clinics. While I agree that this is an epidemic that is growing in the African American community I refuse to believe that it has anything to do with racist ideas or disparity. It has more to do with ignorance and disbelief that it could happen to them. While education might help - the one best thing that could help is an opt out testing poilicy that is not centered on patient sexual education - rather it is centered on finding out if the patient has HIV and then providing education regardless of the outcome. Our testing policy has never been effective. Until we test everyone, provide counseling and education to everyone, and treatment for everyone regardless of social economic or sexual persuasion we will not overcome this easily overcome disease.

In the world of instant-gratification, more people want sex now. Who really wants to wait? This ideal has led more people to engage in sex, protected or not. People have multiple partners too, because it has become a fanfare to do so. The more the gratification, the more the impulsiveness. You want to stop the spread of AIDS and every STD, one word, "Abstain".

A friend of mine who works for STDslove.com told me that the new subscribers have increased 30% over 2007. Rising STD rate sparks online dating sites.

HIV is NOT a disease and does NOT cause AIDS

In the second paragraph the author calls HIV a disease WHICH IT IS NOT, it's a miniscule VIRUS so tiny that a person is given a diagnosis for supposedly having antibodies to the virus. Identifying the virus itself involves an electron microscope which prices this kind of test out of reach for the average person.

AIDS isn't a disease either, it's a SYNDROME, an Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

There are many things that can ravage a person's immune system, poor diet, chronic use of illicit drugs (amyl nitrate--the popular date-rape drug, cocaine, heroin) stress, CHEMOTHERAPY...

When someone is found to have the virus, which implies a virtual death sentence, they are then given the molotov cocktail of chemotherapy drugs that the author mentions as being so "effective". No doctor ever addresses the need to restore the immune system to proper functioning, they prescribe the usual "slash and burn" treatment in the hope the host will outlive the destruction wreaked by the drugs, what a great approach!!

It's the same with cancer. After decades of pouring billions into research the medical community has virtually no answers. Why? They're making too much money in collusion with the insurance and pharmaceutical companies. There are many alternative documented CURES for cancer but they've all been run out of the country by the AMA.

HIV is a RETROVIRUS, in the same family as the herpes virus. In an effort to identify what was breaking down people's immune systems they latched onto this microscopic virus as the culprit. When was the last time something thousands of times smaller than it's host, seen only under an electron microscope, was able to kill it?

I personally knew a gay man who died after a diagnosis of AIDS and didn't have a trace of the virus.

Hear this! It is the medical community who is killing these people, not a simple retrovirus. Obviously they all don't know what they're doing, they're just marching in lockstep with the "authorities" who are making billions off this SYNDROME; the author of this article is innocently promoting this same pernicious lie.
Why do people still trust the AMA and Big Pharma?!! Statistically they kill as many people as disease itself!

Google Dr. Peter Duesberg from U.C. Berkeley, a brilliant scientist and Nobel Prize in Medicine candidate who saw all his research funding pulled by the "authorities" after he attempted to expose this criminal hoax.

Wake up sheeple and whatever you do, DON'T GET TESTED!

Question for Alternet

As a (paying) subscriber to your "Peek" and "Headlines" interested mainly in political issues I usually only respond to the articles posted there. I just wonder why articles about women plumping up their vaginas, Sarah Palin's undeserved press-generated popularity and Rush Limbaugh's latest asshat gaffe make the political pages and this article did not?

AIDS isn't just a "Health and Wellness" issue it's a political one and one I believe is an orchestrated genocide with the well-meaning medical community and others, like the author of this piece as well as millions of unsuspecting potential AIDS patients and those already diagnosed as having HIV, marching in ignorant lockstep to the death knell of the AMA and BigPharma.

There are only 6 comments to this article and three of them are mine. I just think this piece is a little hidden and should receive more attention.

Why is it only the black male population in the United States that is alleged to have an AIDS epidemic? It is racist to suggest that black males are more promiscuous than the white male population - a holdover from the days of slavery and white man bigotry.

The HIV tests were for non-specific antibodies to test the blood supply for contamination and not meant to be used to diagnose HIV or treat AIDS. The manufacturer states that in their information package - as if anyone ever asks to see it or even look.

There are over 70 conditions that can test HIV positive, pregnancy, a flu or hepatitis shot, an autoimmune disease such as lupus, multiple sclerosis or psoriasis, a fungal or yeast infection or the measles.

Where is the HIVirus? Even Dr. David Ho, on his lecture tours, shows not even one micro graph that could be claimed to demonstrate the characteristics of a virus - never mind HIV.

After 25 years and mega bucks invested - the biggest and best of Big Pharma, Merck, produced their HIV vaccine and that was a bust - a killer. How would any one know if such a vaccine would work - by testing HIV positive?

Why use metabolic poisons to treat a virus which, even if it did exist, has no metabolism to poison? Viruses are not breathing, eating, living entities like a human cell they may infect. Human cells do have a metabolism so it is they that are truly vulnerable to these poisons - most of which, like AZT, are failed and discarded anti cancer treatments. So the patient gets the metabolic poisons, the immune system collapses and AIDS becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. And the ill informed and research challenged start wringing their hands and yelling "the sky is falling."

Well it is the science of virology that is failing because too many virologists do not want to admit the emperor wears no clothes.

Several weeks ago, I asked an MD, who is a virus researcher, why do we get a fever when we fall ill? His reply "to kill viruses."

I then asked "why does that not apply to HIV?"

Seven weeks later I am still waiting for a reply.

The whole HIV theory totally contradicts what is known about viruses and how the body deals with them. AIDS researchers, living high off the hog with their money grants, lucrative patent rights for test kits and AIDS drugs and their university sinecures get rather nasty and vicious when challenged about their HIV/AIDS theories.

The experiments being inflicted on trusting 3rd world countries is genocide. These people need anti malarial, anti tubercular drugs, potable water, whole food and decent housing - above all they need freedom from dictators and civil wars fomented by western industrial business interests that want the oil, gas and other mineral wealth for a song.

Because they are black or brown they also conveniently get the "sexual promiscuity" stigma. It is genocide.

Call for re-appraisal of the HIV-AIDS theory
Posted by: myanh44 on Feb 10, 2009 10:11 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The HIV-AIDS story is a Western invention and has everything to do with politics, pride and money and very little to do with science. For more than 20 years, people are made to believe that AIDS is an infectious disease caused by the HIV virus. But there is hardly any direct scientific evidence supporting either viewpoints.

Right now, millions of people diagnosed with AIDS are suffering due to toxic side effects of retroviral drugs, or worse still having to live with the stigma of a "positive" HIV diagnostic test, the basis of which is in itself questionable.

It's time for a major re-appraisal of the HIV-AIDS theory.
