Big Booty Beauty and the New Sexual Aesthetic

Booty. Rump. Bubble butt. Whatever the term, big backsides -- and people's reactions to them -- tell us a lot about American culture.

The many names, affectionate and derogatory, we use in reference to female buttocks suggest the range of ambivalent associations they elicit.

"Booty" holds the promise of illicit pleasures. "Fanny" desexualizes the female behind, turning it into a sweet but inconsequential body part. The command to "get off your fanny" is less hostile than "get off your ass." A "tush" is small and tight, a "rump" is round and fleshy, a "can" is fat and lazy. Sander Gilman points out the "buttocks are an ever-shifting symbolic site in the body. … Never do they represent themselves." Female buttocks function as metaphors for traits that a society values or rejects. Their meanings vary between cultures and among ethnic groups; while a bounteous butt may bring out disgust or disdain in some social circles, it evokes a range of positive associations in others.

In mainstream U.S. culture, "bubble butts" have typically been associated with "lowly" subject positions or "vulgar" sexuality. Calling too much attention to one's behind is considered uncouth in polite society, a nasty reminder of forbidden or distasteful acts. A big butt is associated with "unnatural" sex, excrement or the excess and physicality identified with "darker" races. This body metaphor helps us constitute social identities and subject positions.

Like most females growing up in America, I learned early on that bodily attributes such as butt size, hair texture, skin color and body shape could convey a woman's status and desirability. During my teens, achieving the "all-American girl" look that graced the covers of fashion magazines meant dieting the butt into submission. A woman's failure to rein in an unruly butt connoted her lack of discipline and self-control, and by association, her inferior moral character. It also marked her place in the social order: "high class" women did not carry excess baggage in the trunk. A skinny ass identified you with the elegant and never too rich, never too thin social elite; big butts with the mammies and maids.

But growing up in Miami, where Latinos compose a majority, meant that I also had to negotiate another repertoire of butt metaphors and associations. While my American girlfriends dreamed of acquiring bigger breasts, the Cuban women in my family stressed the value of a bounteous derrière. Thus, in my Little Havana neighborhood, a generously endowed backside earned appreciative glances or wolf whistles. I knew that the size and shape of my butt identified the degree of my cultural assimilation. Thus buttocks registered a cultural divide: flat butts signaled conformity to American beauty standards, voluptuous hips expressed ethnic pride.

To my mom, my refusal to put more meat on my bones seemed a deliberate form of rebellion, another sign of my increasing distance from her native culture. Straightening my hair and speaking without an accent helped downplay my ethnicity, but nothing screamed "Latinness" like an unabashedly big ass. After all, my mother and her friends delighted in their fulsome booties. A skinny ass provoked pitying looks from the matronly Cubanas, for whom it portended sterile, passionless marriages and unfaithful husbands. But to their more assimilated daughters, big culos were associated with "cubanazas" -- those too loud, too fat, "too Cuban" women who were the butt of our jokes. An older generation of Cuban women considered abundant buns an asset, but to those of us who came of age with Twiggy images, a fat ass was a shameful reminder of our ethnic difference.

JLo Curves

In recent years, however, Americans have been enjoying a butt fling. Voluptuous female buttocks have become a valuable commodity, exploited in advertising campaigns, music videos and specialty men's magazines. This butt appeal has produced a profitable commercial market for "bootyful" women. What sparked mainstream culture's lusty fondness for women with big butts? Angharad Valdivia credits the famous JLo butt, arguing that Jennifer Lopez single-handedly ushered in a butt focus within contemporary U.S. culture, intervening "into codes of beauty and femininity, which until quite recently … relied exclusively on that nearly buttless look …" One London magazine reported that Lopez's rounded posterior made "curvy bottoms trendy" and created "a demand for silicone buttock implants" (Daily Mail 2003). In an article in Vanity Fair, Ned Zeman claims that Lopez "created a phenomenon in which a pair of buttocks became, in and of themselves, a cultural icon. Entire news articles would focus on The Lopez Ass, as if it were a separate life-form."

Myra Mendible teaches media and culture studies at Florida Gulf Coast University, where she is chairwoman of the Literature and Languages Department. She has published widely in a variety of peer-reviewed journals and is the editor of an interdisciplinary collection of essays, From Bananas to Buttocks: The Latina Body in Popular Film and Culture (University of Texas Press, 2007).

first of all, where have you been?

secondly, they have never been "in" or "out" because some will always like a big booty and some will not, some will like both, its just down to a personal preference, always has, always will. What you see in mainstream popular culture does not mean anything.

sorry that you spent so much time on this when I just summed it all up in a few words

The author seems to indicate that all voluptuous butts are big butts. Many men like a voluptuous woman, but (pardon the pun) don't care for the excess of bubble buttdom.

Do you recall Anna Nicole Smith's first Playboy centerfold (May 1992)? She was curvy and gorgeous, but did not (at least not then) sport a bubble butt.

Interesting article. Long-term, I'd agree that the historical fear of curves could be an uptight, middle-class, white Puritan thing. More recently, it seems to have been the obsession with dieting and thinness.

Anyhoo, let's hope that butts are here to stay, and that it's not just a trend. Every man can do his part: Next time your Mrs. asks you if an outfit makes her butt look big, say "Yes, I think you should wear that one." She'll call you an idiot, and pick the other dress, but at least you got a few words in.

If I can't put my arms around that tushy and touch one wrist joint with the other and she is only five foot two that is over the limit. And if it happens to be a guy it is WAY over the limit.

Even I am only 38 inches around the hips and I am 5'11' and 190 lbs.

If this site is supposed to be read outside the USA, you should be aware that the word "Fanny" in the UK means the same as the slang word "Pussy" in the USA, i.e. female crotch.

A nice round bubble butt is definitely a very sexy thing on most women...
Posted by: FREE SPEECH on Jan 6, 2009 4:22 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
...but that's no excuse for the overweight-obesity epidemic that is rampant amongst so many Americans (both women and men). You can't hide your lack of appetite control behind 'big is beautiful' or 'i'm a bbw' forever - at some point a person clearly crosses the line in to unhealthy unattractiveness...and then they start whining all the time about how no one wants to be with them because of their weight. Well, duh.

Big butts (along with wide hips and large breasts) are important fertility cues and as such we respond to them instinctually/viscerally - and that's why they provoke the strong reactions mentioned in this article.

I have always much enjoyed the beauty of women with these fertile features as long as they maintain the self-respect and self-discipline to not slip in to sloppy overweightdom. As I said, there is a clear line between being healthily thick with nice curves versus being overweight and consequently unattractive.

Good article - thank you AlterNet for running this one.

...whether it's big or small. And a flaccid one is not, at least, the last time I checked.

But a "big" butt, in itself? Personally I don't see it as being attractive in itself in a woman, simply because of being big. But this is something so personal, so subjective -- who am I to judge for everybody else?

I confess my preference to full hips, the way I feel when I'm dancing with my wife and she rubs against me is beyond pleasure. I have always thought that the big boobs/narrow hip image came from men who were bottle fed and who were not allowed to explore our innate homo-eroticism as children.

Behind The Scenes

Let's face it: people have a likeness for certain body parts, especially the female anatomy.
Some people like voluptuousness and celebrate it, as Duke Ellington composed in a song called "Volupte."
We know about that famous "Baby Got Back" ditty, and to me I think the female butt is very erotic and sensous; and my current girlfriend thinks hers is big and is ashamed of its size, a size 10. She's a little insecure about it. I tell her it's a matter of genetics.
After all, I know we all have certain likes and different standards of beauty, and we know women like well-hung men; so I am attracted to big butt women.
Therefore, let's not demonize a woman's body parts. There, I said it; it's behind me.

In Black Culture, the Butt has always reigned
Posted by: Seyazou on Jan 6, 2009 9:20 AM

As an African-American male in New York City, you see all kinds of women here, all kinds of shapes - this being a fashion capital; you really see the contrast between the skinny waif model-types and the thick women.

Personally, I like a full-figured woman (breasts, hips and booty), and yes I do have a thing for a big-booty woman. I think it is important to realize that even in white American society; voluptuous women were once the ideal. Look back to the Victorian era (latter half of the 19th century) white women both here in America and in Europe wore a bustier to heighten the size of their backside. Even Queen Victoria herself was known to sport her cleavage (not the butt, but breasts, but you see my point – could you see the current queen showing cleavage?). Later on, by the 1950's, Marilyn Monroe was known just as much for her backside as she was for her breasts.

So it is an illusion and really a recent phenomenon that white society is so pre-occupied with thinness. Believe me, there are quite a few white men who like a big booty too, but are afraid to admit it in public.

This has always been the case. You wonder why us Black folks are all kinds of shades, because generations of white men doubtlessly found their curvy African and African-descended servants, slaves and nannies appealing. The late Senator Strom Thurmond (the segregationist South Carolina Dixiecrat) found his maid's ass appealing enough to tap it in 1925 – hence his love-child daughter who came to the surface after his death.

A white man lusting after Black women (mainly because of sistas’ legendary backsides) has been going on for centuries, if not longer.

If anything, the pre-occupation with breasts, especially in America, has become so perverted that any Google-search of "big boobs" gives you an array of garish and totally artificially enhanced breasts on artificially skinny and air-brushed frames.

Most in the Black community - both men and women based on my own conversations about this subject - agree that the big booty is "more natural" meaning that you don’t see Black women running out to get breasts implants and certainly not butt implants. Sistas have - for the most part - God-given derrieres.

One more thing - I'm glad to see that someone else noticed what I've noticed too, that Michelle Obama, the incoming First Lady, has a Ba-donka-donk! For those who may have said that President Barack was not "Black enough", you certainly cannot say that about his wife. Here you have a perfect combination of a dark-skinned woman with brains, wit, strength, and hips and ass to boot (nice thick long legs too).

For better or worse, I am just glad to see that the parameters of American beauty being expanded beyond the tall, skinny fake boobed variety.

BRAVO TO YA! First white woman were raging about full lips and surgically altering their lips to have full lips.... and now it is not cool to have a flat ass...so they are surgically altering their asses as well. Black woman are buying fake hair, weaves, and Japanese and Chinese woman are surgically altering their eyelids to remove their cultural "slant" look to look more Western, and the list goes on and on. Maybe by the year 2055 women will be just woman with different personalities, qualities and accents.

May be by that time, Cultures will have melted and blended so well, we will just be male and female.... all seeking fulfillment and love.

Women will always be judged on the content of their character by heterosexual men... its just that they worry too much about the wrong stuff... perhaps because men so crudely miscommunicate what we care about to boot (pun intended). Bottom line is, nobody can stand a bad character--ultimately that's what wrecks us, male or female.

As I tell Mrs. DaBear all the time, "if it slaps nice, it's fine." My PT used to tell me I had "ribbony glutes" and I'd tell her, "I got a flat ass, come on, just say it! I can take it." The point is I wish I had a butt, flat-ass is one of the leading causes of plumber-crack, that and a beer belly. Damnable malted beverage. Plus your legs go numb sitting on a bus bench with a flat butt... now that's a problem to worry about.

Alrighty then, nuff about the butt-shit... we got Republikaans to prosecute.

For hips, butts and thighs. Several studies have found fat on these parts has a protective value and is associated with a LOWER rate of heart disease and diabetes!

A well written, thought provoking article ! She forgot to mention economic changes though. An extremely thin ideal is popular in opulent periods when we can afford to laugh in the face of Mother Nature because we are sure we will never need a little extra stored energy. But the times ARE a changing and we are not laughing anymore!!!! In fact, Mother Nature is laughing at us!

I loved the way she ended it. Let us celebrate the beauty of ALL women: thin, fat, tall, short, light dark, old, young! Better yet, lets look at the inner beauty of a soul.

"He who judges another by the size of their rear keeps his own brains there."

To be accurate you need to be objective and knowledgeable. To best discuss the aesthetics of women ask men, and vs. Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder, it is in the degree of what is considered the norm with emphasis on areas most noticied in that culture within that broader context. It doesn't change much whether you are a child or adult. In that normal context, for adult men what becomes most notable are those features considered most feminine. Posture and persona (eyes?) factor in as mental/psychological health, and an athletic demeanor, perhaps say even broad shoulders, factors in has physical health as does good dancing ability (what that is all about). That men have somewhat of a fixation on T & A of the female sex, their most notable physical attributes, should go without explaining, but only in the context of what is the norm. Beyond that it becomes neurotic. Men are the best judge of what is the norm in this instance.

In the right places (also healthier). Big tits don't count if the booty doesn't match. That's most men, sexual emotions over rule rational thinking. Big booties increase market value. They should have a blue book for women, like a big booty would balance out a bad attitude or age.

As long as I can remember, many non-white men have found women with hips/butt/boobs desireable...still, it's funny to see traits once decried as ugly (big lips, boobs, etc.) as now en vogue.

IMHO, the only people interested in size zero women are fashion designers.

Engimeering pespective

I see a lot of talk about big butts being attractive and what to do about it, but not much about why that's so. I tend to think there are very practical reasons, from the past or present, for most of our social mores, talked about or not. As an amateur engineer, maybe I can explain.

In pretty much all man-on-top positions that involves hip movement, the man's movement hinges at the knees. Since the vagina, or whatever, is pretty much in line with the body, therefore usually horizontal when being intimate with a friend, some of the best hip movement is with the knees somewhat below the hips so the hips can move back and forth rather than just up and down. Therefore in face-to-face positions the big butt often takes the place of a pillow, also often used to raise the female's (whether man's or woman's) hips. Maybe the desire for the thighs-vertical position also came from when we walked on all fours, and did most other things with at least our hind legs automatically pointed down.

Personally I like a lot of skin contact, so big and well-cushioned all over is fine with me.

Now if I could just figure out what value there ever was in wearing a necktie, other than the general oneupsmanship of wearing clothes in general.

Nice and round is great but bigger isn't always better. I think more often than not this is just an excuse for eating junk and being lazy. Of course in the USA we can't judge anything based on value because everything is ok including being overweight by 30 lbs or more. Dieting is a scam. Cut out soda, diet soda, basically any drink with corn syrup or sugar as one of the main ingredients, processed and fast foods then get some exercise. Im sorry but BBW to me is just a cop out for poor eating habits and lack of physical activity.

J-Lo?????

Okay, going beyond the entire lack of worthwhile commentary on a subject that could have gone somewhere, not far, but at least SOMEwhere; how can you credit Jennifer Lopez for creating interest in womens' behinds? As if she was the first big booty on MTV? As if Sir Mix-a-lot's infamous video for "Baby got Back" was an insignificant precurser to the monolithic impact of J-Lo!?!?! And the needless reference to the song being used on "Charlie's Angels" suggests that the rerelease had a larger impact than the original fame of the song!?! As a golden-era enthusiast and published writer, I must proclaim that this writer is clearly one of the stupidest people to ever get a job in the industry of printed literature. If you were to credit hip-hop culture with the advent of a butt-loving phenomenon, it would help to scan the annals (suggestive word, isn't it?) of history a little further than the last decade. If, in fact, you do believe hip-hop is responsible for this "phenomenon", you definately need to present a more convincing argument.

While the racial differences can be a provocative issue, it is hard to stomach an approach to this subject that completely ignores the evolutionary implications of supple hips. A healthier angle would be to focus on the traditional attraction of voluptuous women as having productive child bearing features (strong, wide hip bones suggest a higher rate of survival for both mother and child, thus ensuring the survival of the species) as opposed to the deviated modern obbsession with frail annorexic bodies. This would be the most rational starting point for a dissertation on the racial differences in sexual attraction. It could be argued that since "darker races", in the author's words, are more evolutionarily endowed in the art of bearing children, white people have in response developed a counter productive instinctual sexual attraction in a psychological effort to compensate for their natural short comings. That argument at least would have been interesting.

Also, did anyone notice the "sources' used in this artictle? The publisher of Sweets is the definitive source on human sexuality and racial variations. Even better; a writer for SALON MAGAZINE proclaims, with all her expertise, that Hillary Clinton's campaign faltered because of her ass (and I'm not refering to her husband). As a young male in my sexual prime, I am suprised to find out that Hillary Clinton even has a butt, let alone what a large impact it has had on her political life.

I've never read American Sexuality Magazine, nor will I ever thanks to this enlightening article, but it appears the editors of Alternet were decieved by the cunningly formal title into thinking it was more than a trashy gossip mag. Apparently, it's not.

The conclusion, however poorly expressed, is the only semi-redeeming part of the article. Imagining a world without objectification seems peachy-keen... if you want a world without sexuality, that is. People objectify each other, it is how we judge whether we percieve somebody as a genetically suitable mate or not. Men do it to women, and women do it to men just as often- society just glorifies the objectification of women on a purely physical level, while encouraging women to objectify men on a financial and possession based level. It shouldn't be that oversimplified, but that is the media's fault. American Sexuality Magazine included.

I feel dumber after reading this article, thanks Alternet.

Huh. An entire article on (some) men's appreciation of a big butt, and not one mention of the underground cartoonist Robert Crumb, whose fetish for such women is legendary.

While I don't necessarily share R. Crumb's fascination, I do wonder whether or not another cliche - unmentioned in this article - is at play here; "The bigger the cushion, the better the pushin'."

I also wonder why such trivial nonsense gets so much attention here, even though it got mine. Has everyone who read this also read today's Frank Rich column? Then again, we all need some comedic relief, especially in these times.

first of all, where have you been?

secondly, they have never been "in" or "out" because some will always like a big booty and some will not, some will like both, its just down to a personal preference, always has, always will.

Even I am only 38 inches around the hips and I am 5'11' and 190 lbs.

Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]

Black woman are buying fake hair, weaves, and Japanese and Chinese woman are surgically altering their eyelids to remove their cultural "slant" look to look more Western, and the list goes on and on. Maybe by the year 2055 women will be just woman with different personalities, qualities and accents.

An Examination Of Butts

I devote much of my time online to the female posterior, but rarely do I examine it in terms of social significance. Thanks for making me look at butts in a new light (there just no way to phrase that where it doesn't sound vaguely "dirty").

I thought AlterNet was a serious political on-line magazine. Just look at the sniggering adolescent comments - who would want to bother with what they write about politics?

Crumb-Bum
