Why Sarah Palin Fired up the Public's Sexual Imagination

By Susannah Breslin, The Frisky. Posted November 14, 2008.

From her hairstyle to her politics, America remains obsessed with the female politician who seemingly came out of nowhere.

Even with the presidential election over, Sarah Palin remains a prominent figure. From her hairstyle to her politics, America has been and remains obsessed with the female politician who seemingly came out of nowhere. And while some debated her political platform, others were more preoccupied by her sexual identity. From a Palin sex doll to an homage adult movie, the sexualization of Palin won't quit. Most recently, writer Rachel Kramer Bussel created Sarah Palin Erotica, a site dedicated to erotic stories about the former Republican vice presidential candidate. After the jump, an interview with Bussel that reveals why Americans can't get over Palin.

The Frisky: How did you come up with the idea for the site?

Rachel Kramer Bussel: Erotica is what I know best, writing-wise, so it seemed natural to turn my attention to the figure in the election who has been the most sexualized. She's not the only one who's been sexualized, by any means, but when I started seeing things like George Gurley in the New York Observer saying he wanted to have sex with her, the porn video, and basically references to her and her sexuality in mainstream media, I realized the time was ripe for it. Also, I think you can do things with fiction that you can't with fact. You can imagine and elaborate and embellish, and often you may find what could have been a polemic becoming more complicated. No one is pure good or pure evil, especially when it comes to our fantasies. In other words, Palin is a starting point for the stories on the site, but not necessarily the end point. Fiction, and erotica specifically, offers a way to comment on politics and sex, which are intimately intertwined, in creative, nuanced ways, while telling hot stories. I will be posting more stories, and hope to see the conversation continue. I was also inspired by Stephen Elliott's Sex for America: Politically Inspired Erotica, which came out earlier this year. There is a history of political erotica, from Susie Bright's classic "Dan Quayle's Dick" to my very first erotica story, "Monica and Me," about Monica Lewinsky, that the site draws from.

F: Why do you think Americans are so sexually fascinated by Palin?

RKB: I think first it was because of her looks, but almost immediately her story, wild as it was, entranced people. Even those of us opposed to her politics couldn't help but be captivated, and part of that captivation is her sexual allure. That doesn't necessarily mean we all want to have sex with her (just to be clear, I don't), but we want to know more about her, including what she's like in bed. I read a UK reporter likening her to Princess Diana in terms of her appeal to the crowds. She's brash, outspoken, gutsy. She's a woman and a mother, in so many ways highly traditional, and yet totally not. I think she set off a lot of hot buttons around women's roles in the home and workplace, as parents, and as sex objects. This story we're hearing about her breezing into a hotel room dressed just in a towel -- that's not erotica, that's real, yet it could be straight out of the story "The World of Men" by Delilah T. Jones.

I think we were fascinated by her, too, because she was so sure of herself, even when, perhaps, she shouldn't have been. The sheer gumption she needed to push her way to the top is part of the charisma a good politician has, and that's sexy. For many of us, her accent, her pushiness, her look were all things that made us wonder what made her tick. I think for any public figure, or authority figure, we wonder whether their sexual persona, what they do in private, what turns them on matches or is opposed to their public persona. For some of us, they're exactly the same; for some, they're different.

Even her appearance on "Saturday Night Live" showed that she was a good sport. She almost seemed in on her own joke. I think that made her even more attractive.

F: What have you learned from doing this project so far?

RKB: I thought Jackson West's story was very interesting because in many ways it was sympathetic toward her. It was satirical, yes, but also explored what she might get out of her church experiences. Again, eroticism and religion are closely intertwined for some people. I learned that she is certainly a lightning rod, and that she set off sexual fantasies for many people who weren't Republicans (and, I'm sure, many who were). The reactions to the site have been very interesting, with many people finding it immediately fascinating and many more appalled by it. I truly wonder what Palin herself would think.

F: Some people think your site is sexist, that it objectifies a female politician, when we should be paying more attention to her political platform. But some of the fantasies are about Palin as a powerful woman -- like a political dominatrix. What do you think of this phenomenon?

RKB: I think plenty of attention was paid to her political platform, as it should be. But she immediately captured the public's sexual imagination, and I think part of that was deliberate. Sex was front and center in her life, from her five children to her daughter's pregnancy. I refer you to Susie Bright's take on why Palin's sex life matters. This fictionalized version of it means that we can imagine her in all sorts of ways -- as a power-hungry politician, as a swinger, as a swooning in church lady. We don't know what her actual sex life is like, but we can imagine it. The site doesn't exist just because she's a woman in politics, or because of her looks or how she dresses; that would be sexist. I think the site exists because people were so fired up about her. She offended so many women with the idea brought forth in news stories that simply by being a woman, you're a feminist or represent feminist ideals. There was a backlash against that, and the idea of having sex with her, whether it's lesbian sex or swinger sex or church sex, became a way to deal with that through fiction.

Part of being a politician and being in the public eye is about having people fantasize about you. Bill Clinton is another example of a highly sexualized politician; in fact, I think Bill might just like a tumble in the sack with Sarah. Is she sexualized because she's a woman? Yes, but it's not just because she's a woman. I think she flirted with her audiences right back, and what I loved about Delilah T. Jones's story is that it captured what being a woman surrounded by such powerful men might be like. That doesn't mean she's really like that; for all I know, she could be a nymphomaniac or have a rather sedate sex life. The point isn't what she actually does, but what we can imagine her doing. How would her sexuality have changed if she'd gone on to the White House? How is sex different in Alaska than other parts of the country? What's it like to be a famous and powerful woman while your husband is not as famous or powerful?

F: What's next? Michelle Obama erotica?

RKB: Not for me, though certainly the Obamas' clear affection for each other is part of their appeal. It's hard to imagine them having a sexless marriage. The idea that politicians' sex lives are totally irrelevant to their politics is ridiculous. Everyone's sex life is relevant to their politics. So who's next? I don't know, but I think for me I'm thinking less about politics and more about celebrities.

Ya know, Susie Bright's comments withstanding, this whole article seems heterosexist to me.
I think it's the boys who are drooling over her. I must hang with a whole DIFFERENT group of dykes than Susie Bright, because none of us find her the LEAST bit attractive.
The rapacious personality, the screw everyone, the lies, the vacancy in the eyes, the stupidity...makes it hard to see her as anything but a caricature of a woman.
Sure the Repressed Republicans and frat boy Dems are drooling, but give me Michelle Obama ANY day of the week over Sarah Palin!

Goodness! The woman needs to fade back into the obscurity she richly deserves.

Sarah Palin most definitely does NOT put the lead in my pencil.

Having sex with her would be like having sex with Peggy Hill(character from TV cartoon show, "King of the Hill").

She just doesn't do a thing for me.

I think this is just another case of media's obsessive hype. It must be another slow news day of not covering America's real problems. Can the Sarah Palin/Paris Hilton ticket be far away?

Underlying all of this seems to be the misguided idea that Palin is a strong woman with moxie. Hence, she is slipping into the fantasies of feminists desperate for heroes.

Another colossal load of crap. She's the female equivalent of GWB. The machine created her and carries her along, while she enjoys the ride. She has nothing to say that hasn't been fed to her on cheat cards, apart from a few snotty remarks about Obama sleeping with ter'rsts, which any 6th grader could come up with.

The biggest fantasy is in her own head, that any of this power comes from within her. The reason she wandered off script is that she is even more delusional than GWB who, I think, has some level of understanding that he is not the brains of the operation. Her overnight fame seems to have convinced her that she is more than a symbol and figurehead for Idiot America.

For this reason, she is frightening. As anybody who works in a workplace knows, there is nothing more scary than that person who has risen too quickly through the ranks, and has an inflated and impermeable sense of entitlement. They may have power, but not strength of character. Note the way Palin whines and bad-mouths people like a spoiled teenager every time she hears bad press about herself.

How many times do I have to tell you people out there that the ELECTION IS OVER ?!?!? Obama/Biden won and the other side lost ! Paling is going back to her gubenatorial post in AK. Frankly, at this point I'm sick and tired of the media obsessing on Palin while at the same time showing no outrage over Obama creating another Clintonian cabinet. The more the media obsess on Palin, the more powerful she will be by 2012. This reminds me of the way Clinton was bashed after he left office. In the case of Palin, the media's beating a dead horse and yet indirectly trying to revive it. And I thought this country has important issues to deal with. Oh well, infotainment there to distract and destroy ! Keep it up and like the story "The Boy and the Sheppard", Palin will be the nominee and possibly defeat Obama in 2012 thanks to Obama getting worse day after day in cloning Clinton/Blair.

No cleavage
Posted by: Drume on Nov 15, 2008 5:36 AM

This is an excerpt from the first story on the site: "Carefully, she smoothes the wrinkles out of her blouse and skirt, makes sure she’s showing some cleavage, and gives her shoulders a little shake"

But the thing is, if you notice how she dresses, it is very nice, but she does not do anything to make herself extra sexy at all. She makes sure, it seems, to never show cleavage.

Even her appearance on "Saturday Night Live" showed that she was a good sport. She almost seemed in on her own joke. I think that made her even more attractive.

This was said by the editor of the site, and I gotta disagree wholeheartedly. She didn't seem to even understand the point of it at all. She has no perspective on herself, so how can she laugh at herself. I thought it was fairly humorless, the whole thing.

PALIN: BUSH IN DRAG
Posted by: AlwaysAskWhy on Nov 15, 2008 6:02 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Am I the only one that sees Palin as "Bush in Drag"?

What's terrifying, as with Bush, is that the woman can't communicate in proper English. She butchers the English language as badly, if not worse, than George W. Bush! She's as snarky as Bush, as uninformed as Bush, as uncurious as Bush, just as disinterested in the truth and facts as Bush, just as wiling to tell bald-faced lies as Bush, and as narcissistic. Same as Bush: she makes an outrageous statement, or one that she thinks is brilliant, then looks furtively at the audience to see their reaction, then pats herself on the back when she gets approval. It's like the kid who keeps telling the same stupid joke over and over because he/she thinks it's funny...when no one else does. And that same sing-song, up and down, emphasis in the wrong places voice! Augh! JUST LIKE BUSH, IT'S LIKE NAILS ON A BLACKBOARD!

It's just as embarrassing and humiliating to have a VP nominee who is just as ignorant as this nation's president (albeit UN-elected). And now it's just getting annoying that she WON'T GO AWAY!

If I never hear her sing-song voice (like Bush's) again, or never see her face again, it will be TOO SOON!

Someone, please! Tell William Crystal to put it back in his pants and take her back to Alaska... on a slow boat -- WHERE THEY BOTH BELONG!

Why do so many otherwise rational males fantasize about having sex with Sarah Palin? Maybe it's in their genes (no pun intended!). A woman who fearlessly hunts and kills, and who perseveres despite criticism, might be just the reproductive partner for someone unconsciously intent on being the patriarch of a warrior clan.

Surely, Alternet has something better to do than gather up all these fringe articldes. The election is over; we don't give a s--- about Palin. Never did, never will.

Unfortunately, I live in Alaska and I will have to hear about her for awhile. She is riding the coattails of national notoriety right now. But, Senate? 2010 bid? Sexy? No way, not to me. Maybe a bunch of lame-dicked men who have fantasies...whatever.

But she needs to be put to rest--particularly by the progressives; I am about ready to discontinue reading Alternet. There are so many important issues out there, and she is not one of them.

The vast majority of the comments on this page are about peoples' PERSONAL DESIRE (or lack thereof) toward Sarah Palin--could it be that the foundational reason behind the sexualizing of Palin is that in our culture it is totally acceptable in all facets, including the MSM, to sexualize a woman in the limelight who--whether she fits your PERSONAL tastes or not--is at least acceptably attractive physically.

And that's to say nothing about the fact that there is even an article about it.
And to say nothing about the fact that there was a reason to WRITE an article about it.

Anyone need an example of sexism??

Because the reason why it is so acceptable for the posts above me to even be considered part of a legitimate discussion about this topic is a GREAT example.

SNL & Palin

I strongly disagree with your assessment that the SNL appearance helped to humanize Palin's image.

For McCain, Obama or Biden this would be true= not because they are men- but because they have well established images as high public officials. These figures' image as high public offficials is one of seriousness, power and focus on hard issues. Appearing on SNL in a jocose and self-deprecating skit is indeed a humanizing experience FOR THEM.

Sarah Palin has never established herself as a prominent and serious political figure. She is in the spotlight because John McCain put her there. She has not yet shown that she is willing to undertake the drudgery of politics- or even to do her homework.

Palin remains the pretty, empty headed dillettante riding high on a float. She is a decoration and not a player.

Her SNL appearance reinforced that image. Two weeks after she demanded "respect" from the Washington press corps, Sarah and Todd Paling were "rapping" on SNL.

On her return from Alaska and at the GOP Governors Association meeting, Palin held lengthy and self-serving press conferences.

The Governor talked extensively about holding the Democrats accountable, yet not one word has issued from her lips regarding any effort to keep convicted felon Ted Stevens from representing Alaska in the US Senate.

Palin's idea of accountability apparently remains to serve as a partisan pit-bull while ignoring felonious conduct in her own state... no doubt she is too busy monitoring Putin to prosecute felons in her own state Republican Party.

The question remains- is Sarah Palin a serious politician or a celebrity... until she starts doing her homework the question will remain.

It was surprising to me that Todd Palin's behavior was never discussed. From rumors about his alleged skirt chasing in Dillingham (where he fished) to his somewhat apparently bizzare need for control over the relationships of Debbie Richter, a close friend and Palin appointee, it seemed a fertile field for the tabloids.

Giving minor sexual credit
Posted by: PaulK on Nov 15, 2008 8:17 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Selling sexuality is a quirky business that can mix well with politics. I remember that a woman porn star got elected to the Italian parliament. Also, Evita slept her way into becoming a musical.

A number of semi-fictional characters have moved freely from entertainment to politics, mostly stud guys. Jesse "the body" Ventura was an outrageous caricature on the small screen, half-naked to show his muscles and dumb as a box of hammers. Many wrestlers wear a huge belt buckle to attract attention to their padded groins, and there's often a silicone sister in a bathing suit nearby. Is that selling sexuality? Then we have two-bit western hero Ronald Reagan, pop star who couldn't sing Sonny Bono, district attorney on TV Fred Thompson, and various astronauts and quarterbacks.

Aging Governor Palin has tried her level best to play the ingenue. In an earlier life she paraded her bod on the catwalk while winning (or almost winning) pageants. She still identifies with being incredibly cute on stage, not at all like, say, Condaleeza Rice. Someone posted a nude picture of the guv on the web from her earlier life.

Further, she feigns female stupidity when it suits her. I'm not talking about her legendary ignorance of all things political, although that helps. Her cutesy speech helps guys buy into the "I like em dumb" image. Feminists may not at all appreciate the stereotype of the clueless young woman who can be easily and quickly seduced, but for average (fairly stupid) guy it's a turn-on. Paris Hilton may or may not be completely stupid, but she seems to play a ditz on TV reality shows. The classic dumb blonde of the 1960s was Goldie Hawn, who in real life was pretty smart. Even the prototypical smart woman on TV today, Tina Fey, succeeds because most of her gags and punch lines are pointedly stupid. She plays some really stupid-acting characters, like...

Personally, it never occurred to me to think of Governor Palin as a sex object. She's a 44 year old backstabbing petty crook who can wink a little. Oh, and she has an utterly unbelievable bod for someone who just had a fifth baby. However, somewhere out there are millions of Christian older men who drool for the gal.

This Palin woman has been wheeled out on a bier to her barge of Babylon and set sail on the Ship of State in an act that rivals Melville. But she is not a great white whale . . . yet!

People have been ranting about her since she showed up. Comments from my Gay and BI friends could have been taken straight out of Revelations! "Man have you ever seen anything like this bitch?" I had not been so scared in 62 previous years!

I am still scared! When I was seven my sis put me in a dress and pushed me out the front door. She and her friends thought that would be the funniest thing immaginable. WRONG! For the next ten years anyone showing me womens underthings had a real chance of being puked on.

Besides, Palin is nowhere as cute as Ellen Degenerous, (i allways did want to have her baby!) or Jessica Alba for that matter. What is the big deal? This woman is a stand in for a fake human! She is a wolf murderer for Dog's sake!

Sarah Palin! Lady, you have to clean up that act. Your ego is not fit for your body, only men should be that bloody arrogant! Go home, appologize to the wolves, and GROW UP!

We know what makes Palin tick– and it is not sexy.
Posted by: monkeywrench on Nov 15, 2008 9:49 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
From the article:
"I think we were fascinated by her, too, because she was so sure of herself, even when, perhaps, she shouldn't have been. The sheer gumption she needed to push her way to the top is part of the charisma a good politician has, and that's sexy. For many of us, her accent, her pushiness, her look were all things that made us wonder what made her tick."

NO.

Extreme pushiness is not sexy, at least not at motormouth Palin's volume level; it is shrill, irritating, and vaguely like the stereotype of the neighborhood busybody who cannot wait to tell everybody else how to live their lives, and invites herself but never GETS invited to anybody's dinner party. I've seen this personality, and, trust me, it is NOT sexy. As for being "so sure of herself, even when, perhaps, she shouldn't have been?" Even though it is all to common in today's world, this form of "confidence" is vastly overrated; after all, it is a characteristic shared by sociopaths.

What's pathetic is that, in a politician, these lamentable traits are seen as assets. No wonder we are in trouble.

As as for wanting to know what makes her tick? Some psychologists already seem to know: she has been described as someone who is pathologically narcissistic. THAT's what "makes her tick."

"I Like My Women a Little on the Trashy Side"? It was quite a hit for quite a while, it seemed. (I stongly dislike "whine" music, but living where I do, I am subjected to it almost everywhere I go, LOL.)

If the song was any reflection of working class men's sexual preferences, then it would explain why so many of them lust after Sarah. I don't really like the term "trailer trash", since many good and normal people, including me, live in manufactured housing, but it is a stereotype that fits her.

If it's all based on her sexuality, and America's tastes run true, she's coming to the end of her shelf-life.

As yourself this: If Palin were running for anything else on a national level, and say she was running as a Democrat, and not as a representative of a party which disdains women's rights, and so was less of an anomaly--would we have given her this much press?

If Palin were hired to speak to women in general, and not men and women of a particularly hard-line conservative frame of mind, would we be so fascinated?

She looks to me like a lot of other women politicians. There are many of them who are fortunate in their genes, look trim, are pretty, nicely coiffed, well-dressed. The reason they aren't subjects of articles about their sexuality is that they're embroiled in their jobs. They're working. And when they come out of their office buildings to campaign, they aren't thinking about using their sexuality to get over.

And neither is Palin, probably. But the RNC was, and make no mistake about that.

Let her go back to eating moose burgers and forget about her.

Palin is being given far too much media attention. I for one don't want to ever hear or read her name in the news ever again.

"RKB: I think first it was because of her looks, but almost immediately her story, wild as it was, entranced people. Even those of us opposed to her politics couldn't help but be captivated, and part of that captivation is her sexual allure. That doesn't necessarily mean we all want to have sex with her (just to be clear, I don't), but we want to know more about her, including what she's like in bed."
Morons are attracted by other morons.
Her wild story? She entranced people?
sexual allure ???
Every time I saw her picture, from the very beginning, I knew she was ugly inside. Beauty is obviously in the eyes of a stupid observer.

A waste of time and smug nonsensical drivel from RKB.

The media needs to back away from the non-stop Palin circus, INCLUDING AlterNet. If voters were that attracted to her "sexual qualities," then why isn't she the VP elect?

Also from the article:

"Even those of us opposed to her politics couldn't help but be captivated, and part of that captivation is her sexual allure."
WTF??
This woman and her slimy website speaks for itself. And she does not speak for the majority of progressives.
Do we really need this kind of garbage shoved down our throats on AlterNet?

The article's right on! I live in Fairbanks, AK, and I've wondered from day one what the heck the attraction? Eye-candy pure and simple. What other candidate has been dressed in such form-fitting outfits. Sexual allure pure and simple. What an insult to all us women. Who wears the pants in her household? Perhaps that's the attraction for some women. Definitely outspoken, but what's spoken? Glad she's here, not in DC, but please help us all, that she soon fades somehow into the sunset sometime! Obviously WE can't get away from her here...alas.

"pathological narcissism"--that says it all. Bush 1 and Bush 2, Dick Cheney 3. The FEMA chief who said "I am fashion god"==this not only describes the administration, it also describes too many Americans themselves. People admire peope who remind them of themselves, who personify their fantasies about themselves. Like votes for like--that explains a lot of it.

It's a sad commentary to think so many find this shallow hull of a human (Sara Palin) a viable candidate for any office, let alone the position as vice president, and possibly president.
I would of hoped that more would be seeking a persons substance, rather than outward appearances.
It's one thing to have a woman in office, that's OK, as long as it's the right woman, one who has substance and not just a ah shucks, a wink, and a nod to the good ol boy click.
And they ask me to lay down my life for nit wits, come on, get real.
The election of Obana was like throwing open wide the windows and allowing a breath of fresh air to come rushing in.
Palin! stay home and take care of your children, they need you, we don't

Sexy? Sarah Palin? Are you SERIOUS?!

Delusional, narcissistic arrogance? Not sexy.

Inability to form a coherent thought? Very not sexy.

Inability to speak even remotely coherently without a teleprompter? SO not sexy.

And that fakely folksy-dumbass accent that she can turn on and off at will? Not sexy.

Ignorance combined with arrogance? Really not sexy.

Complete lack of intellectual development? Not at all sexy.

Complete disinterest in intellectual development? Even more not sexy.

Tormenting and killing innocent non-edible animals by chasing them to exhaustion in an aircraft and then wounding them until they finally die a terrified, painful death? Hugely unsexy.

Religious fanaticism? Scary, not sexy.

Snide, snarky self-satisfaction? Not even a little bit sexy.

Habitual lying? Totally unsexy.

Sounding as if everything she says is a memorized, heavily rehearsed pre-recorded message? Really, really not sexy.

And serious, folks, she's attractive in an over-the-hill-failed-pageanter kind of way, but in a truly beautiful, sexy way? Come on! There are millions of women her age and older who are both genuinely beautiful and genuinely sexy. This one is none of the above. Not really beautiful, not at all sexy, and certainly not genuine.

Sex and Power
Posted by: writerman on Nov 16, 2008 1:30 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Strange as it may seem, leaders have often been seen as highly erotic or sexual creatures.
Clearly many people do find Sarah Palin attractive, why? She's a personality politician and obviously she's a very 'womanly' kind of woman. Hilary Clinton dresses down, dresses 'masculine', Sarah Palin clearly dresses up, emphasizing her body.

What is it about rightwing politicians and physical attractiveness? Is it the triumph of the body, the emotions, over the mind and rationality? Is this what it really means? Heart before head? Love over sense?

One extraordinary example is Adolf Hitler. What exactly is it about men in uniform?! Many of Hitler's poses, very carefully staged, resemble male fashion shots. Her is a man who is 'modelling' ideas about strength, virility, manliness, bravery, willpower, daring...

At the same time he was a 'rockstar' the crowds of adoring women who flocked to see him and listen to him were 'hysterical' and attracted to a young hero who had proved himself on the battlefield and had a carefully constructed persona.

Why are totalitarian leaders and movements so facinated by military uniforms? Why are so many gay people, and others, facinated with uniforms? The leather belts, the long boots, shiny, shiny; shiny boots of leather.

German military uniforms were very beautiful, why? This is a highly complex and controversial subject to get into; facism and sexuality, so I think I'll rein myself in here and not go off the deep end.

Sex and Power [Wehrmacht and SS uniforms were designed, I believe, primarily by Adolf Hitler himself

Trying to reply to writerman; For some reason, this machinery is refusing to take my post. Trying again.

I don't concede that "German military uniforms were very beautiful, why?" but you do have some seeds of wisdom on this.

Wehrmacht and SS uniforms were designed, I believe, primarily by Adolf Hitler himself. He had certain theatrical skills. They also referenced the uniforms of the previous (19th) century, which uniforms included very uncomfortable and restrictive 'fit', the better to ensure discipline in 'the common soldier'.
The story of uniforms is an interesting one. In the 20th century, the uniforms of the democratic countries and of the socialist totalitarians seemed designed to reflect their ideological beliefs, while also addressing the practicalities of soldiering. So, I suggest, in WW2, the best quality of design and implementation was US 1943- 1945.

The politics of adoption of dress style is also part of the story. So, for example, in the Military Museum in Barcelona, Spain, the various uniforms tell the geo-politics of the time. From the crude Blue overalls of the militia defenders of Republican Spain, through the evolution of dress of the Nationalists (neo-fascist winners of that war), from something recognizably 'British' (referenced as winners of WW1) through something very similar to SS or German paratrooper kit, from 1939, then changing from 1943 onwards, to something completely influenced by US military dress.

And, of course Spain is now, quite definitely, one of the more democratic and progressive countries in Europe and the world.

Yes the campaign is over but there has been a Sorry Palin overload on network TV. How dumb is this woman? She still doesn't get you have to read about policy, to offer constructive change to policy. She still calls Obama a socialist, she still wants to review his relationship with Bill Ayers, and we are still being forced to view her as a serious political figure.

Ah, it's easy to explain the desirability of Ms. Palin. She is compliant, "the way a girl should be." We might not know what she thinks, or even if she thinks at all, but she does stand firmly
and SUPPORTIVELY behind the man (her husband, her boss, her party leader, etc.), sereving as his spokesperson.

In general, the more conservative the man, the more "turned on" he is by that brainless quality of compliance (obedience) in his girl.

Is there any logic in a world where this article about a woman who should've faded back into oblivion on November 5th has more comments/discussion than both headlines about the Iraq war combined?
"We" would rather flog a dead horse than face reality. I hear it called 'war fatigue'. We just turn it off and act like it's not happening, even those of us who hate it, protest it, and elect a president because he says he'll end it. We hear it justified in ridiculous ways , like "if we aren't there, they'll come here". I hear this from children! Well, should we ask your average Iraqi about war fatigue? Or maybe they'd rather talk about Sarah Palin.

Meanwhile, we're getting the vaseline free rape of the people by Congress, the Senate, BushCo and Wall Street. Still dying with no healthcare, substandard education, limited options for higher education, war on 2 countries, unable to emigrate because most of the world justifiably hates us.

And yet our time and energy is better spent being bitchy, petty and insulting about some meaningless woman in northwest bumblef*ck lookin' at Russia from her house.

In journalism, there is a term we used to capture a reader's curiousity: we call it an "attention getter"; and although this is not about journalism, it is about John McCain using Sarah as a way to spice up his ticket AND make people notice him (or her).
Well, it worked. Now we can't ger her off our minds.
