Why African Americans Should Oppose California's Proposition 8

By Sikivu Hutchinson, AlterNet. Posted October 31, 2008.

Voting for Prop 8 is a betrayal of civil rights principles and a hypocritical denial of some of the real crises that imperil black families.

On the corner of King Blvd and Crenshaw black street preachers goose step their way through anti-gay slogans, adding an unwelcome touch of street theater demagoguery to the flow of everyday pedestrian traffic. A few blocks away, Yes on Proposition 8 (the California ballot initiative that would amend the state Constitution and outlaw same-sex marriage) signs have begun springing up like weeds, a final appeal to black and Latino conservatism by the anti-gay marriage regime.

The perception that black folk in particular are more receptive to homophobic propaganda is partly grounded in reality and partly grounded in stereotype. Polls have shown that African Americans are 10 percent more likely to support Prop 8 than other racial groups. Because the pro and con polling numbers for Prop 8 are so tight, black support for the measure could put it over the top. And what exactly do black straight people like me have to be threatened by? Cultural nationalist supporters of Prop 8 argue that homosexuality and the insidiously labeled "gay lifestyle" (a slur that presumes that gays and lesbians are monolithic) threaten the already besieged black family. Given this belief, African Americans are presumably more invested in propping up heterosexism because of the pathologization of black families. Yet Prop 8 rests on the same logic that prohibited interracial marriages, a premise that the California Supreme Court cited in its ruling in favor of legalizing same-sex marriages. Slavery and antebellum patriarchy were rooted in rigid definitions of family and marriage aimed at preserving property rights, lines of descent and white purity. This legacy continues to influence the gender hierarchies underlying so-called traditional family structures and to police families that aren't nuclear or heterosexual.

Voting to amend the California Constitution will extend this legacy. It signifies a concession to flat earth politics, a betrayal of civil rights principles and a hypocritical denial of some of the real crises that imperil black families. As straights we live in communities that are devastated by the large number of black children in foster care due to parents who are either unwilling or unable to take care of them. As straights we lament the absence of affirming role models for children in a racist hyperviolent culture that devalues black lives, yet fail to connect this to a cult of masculinity that demeans women and gays and lesbians. As straights we engage in the schizoid rhetoric of championing black self-determination yet vilify full citizenship for gays and lesbians as a "European" thing. As straights we cherry pick who is "rightfully" part of the community based upon heterosexual privilege while disrespecting the valiant heritage of black liberation struggle exemplified by gay freedom fighters such as Audre Lorde and Bayard Rustin.

Although there are several California-based African-American churches that have consistently advocated for gay and lesbian partnerships, black religious fundamentalism is still the number one barrier to aligning a progressive black civil rights agenda with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) rights. Gay and lesbian families of color are invisible in the mainstream media, yet they are an integral part of communities of color. Contrary to the propaganda of black fundamentalists, gay and lesbian caregivers, parents and grandparents nurture black children alongside and within so-called straight households. As a black atheist and parent, I want my seven-month-old daughter to grow up in a culture where -- gay, straight or bi -- her entire range of personhood, love and commitment to another human being is not legally bound by the Paleolithic mores of religious fundamentalism. In this regard, voting no on Prop 8 is the only moral choice.

Civil Rights?

Black people are smarter than you give us credit for. How can you possibly compare this to the civil rights movement or even a civil right? Barack Obama has said himself (as had Joe Biden, John McCain and Sarah Palin) that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Bill Clinton - the defender of black people - signed the Defense of Marriage Act in 2006 which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. Jerry Brown, while Governor of California signed into law that marriage is between a man and a woman. Supreme Courts in nine states have ruled on same sex marriage and six have reached the conclusion that same sex marriage is not a civil right. That people who practice the gay life style are a distinct class and have civil rights is far from decided. Our rights come from the people and the people voted overwhelmingly in 2000 to define marriage as between a man and a woman. Four judges (who are nothing more than appointed attorneys) overruled the will of the people. If our rights come from judges then our end is only tyranny. Stop tyranny and vote yes on 8! If prop 8 fails then so be it -the people will have spoken.

Lets not forget that Coretta Scott King stood in the side of equality and often spoke of the equal rights for gays and lesbians. She lives in the spirit of her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and his struggle for equality for all!!

And, who was one of Dr. King's loyal and trustworthy friends? Bayard Rustin, who has been left in the closet by this homophobic nation we live in, and refuse to acknowledge him and his commitment.

Alas, queer black feminist once said "there is no hierarchy of oppressions."

Real Crises in the Black Community

The real problems in the black community are directly related to family issues. Children who grow up without a mother and a father typically live in poverty, receive poor educations, and are more likely to spend time in prison. Gay marriage will further erode the traditional families that would benefit the black community. Black should VOTE YES ON PROP 8 and protect their children.

"HAS ANYONE, EVER CONSIDERED THE FACT...THAT HEALTH IS AN ISSUE IN ... INTIMACY ??"
Posted by: One American Lady on Nov 1, 2008 4:07 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
NO MATTER IF THE INTIMACY IS, BETWEEN TWO HUMAN BEINGS.
Ask Yourself, "Why was a Male & Female, Created, in the Stucture, in which is Considered to Be Normal?"
Think about this: "when a Pipefitter, puts together, two pieces of pipe, can they , fit *two male parts together* / *two female parts, together / & the situation, WOULD WORK, PROPERLY ???
Certainly Not.
Health is a Very Important Part of the Function of the Body, associated with the Brain Function.
When Male / Female, were Created, Both were Created with the Same Type of Substances, in their Body, but Each Form of Body...a Male & Female, were Created to Produce, a Certain Type of Hormone, for the Development & Proper Function, for Their Body Structure.
When a Male & Female, provide Each Other, with Intimacy actions...there is a Secretion, From Each of their Bodies, that is *HELPFUL TO EACH BODY, WHICH MAKES CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER*.
Now, Ask Yourself, When Two Persons, of the Same Gender, are Intimate, IS IT HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY ??
Say, for instance, that someone is working in the sewer department, & they are "changing out, the septic system, in a commercial / private setting, & THEY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE INSIDE OF THE OLD PIPES, & RIGHT AWAY, GERMS ARE WORKING AWAY, ON A WOUND OF THE HAND OR ANY OTHER PART OF THE BODY, TO WHICH IT MAKES CONTACT.... then, that person, has been Exposed to Hazard Materials, to which an Infection, can last for days / months & could Lead to Death, if medical care, is Not Administered in a Timely Manner.
On the topic of Hormones, there are Male / Female Hormones, in Every Human Being,& it takes a Balance of These, for *Emotional / Mental Stability, to be Retained, properly*...
& Intimacy, is Just One Way, that an Exchange of Hormones, are Shared... to be Absorbed, into the Human Body... so that Less Hormonal Replacement Therapy, (HRT) is Needed / Required, & Unnecessary, when there is a Permanent / Steady, Relationship... one in which Health is Taken Seriously... & "Safe Sex / Healthy Sex"... should Not Be Taken Lightly... like so many people do, in this day & time.
ALL INDIVIDUALS, HAVE A RIGHT, TO BE WHO THEY WISH TO BE, BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT... TO INFRINGE UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLES ON ANYONE ELSE... OF ANY AGE...
Health is Valuable to Life, & Life is All an Individual has... til death occurs.
Just because Most People, Valuable Marriage / any Relationship, between Male & Female, has Nothing to Do with a Religious Belief.
It is Human Nature, & Individuals were Created as a Male & a Female... to *Fit Together* for a Purpose of a Balance of a Healthy Nature.
When this Pattern is Broken, Unhealthy Situations Occur... Mentally / Physically / Emotionally... & Legally... Creating Havoc, in Each of These Areas.
Does a Body of a Male, need a Male Hormone... from another Male... Probably Not, unless that person, was born... with a Malfunction of the Hormone Levels.
Does a Body of a Female, need a Female Hormone... from another Female... Probably Not... unless that female was born, with a Malfunction of the Hormone Levels.
IS A FEMALE / FEMALE HORMONE , CONDUCIVE WITH EACH OTHER?
IS A MALE / MALE HORMONE, CONDUCIVE WITH EACH OTHER ??
The Answer: Probably Not... As Yet, I have Not Heard, that "Transplants of Hormones, can be taken from One Human Body & injected into another Human Body"... but there are Synthetic Hormones being used for HRT purposes.
ARE YOU AWARE, THAT "A CONTENT IN SOYBEANS, IS THE CLOSEST SUBSTANCE, A MATCHING HORMONE, CONDUCIVE WITH THE HUMAN BODY, moreso, than any other substance, can be???
Education is a wonderful commodity, to obtain..it can Sustain Life, to the Fullest

HUMAN RIGHTS... they can certainly be a Challenge for Lawmakers...
Posted by: One American Lady on Nov 1, 2008 4:27 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Well, Let's Consider this Human Right ...
When a School-Age Child / Youth, is "in Attendance on a Location, Financially Supported by the Monies from the Taxpayers... THESE "MINOR-CHILDREN / YOUTH, ARE DENIED THE RIGHT TO ... HAVE A FUNDAMENTAL BELIEF.. HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ... WORSHIP... IN A MANNER, CHOSEN BY THEM (VIA THEIR PARENTS PERMISSION),
YET...when that Child...becomes an Adult... COMMITS A CRIME... BECOMES A CRIMINAL.. IS *PUT IN PRISON.... THEY ARE AWARDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO ... WORSHIP... IN A MANNER, CHOSEN BY THEM... ".
Isn't Our Government Laws, just a bit, CONFLICTING... BETWEEN AGE GROUPS ???
Why should Age, interfere, with the Individual (Constitutional) Right, for anyone to have an Opportunity / Designated Time, to Worship, in a Manner, in which THEY WISH TO BELIEVE, EXERCISE THIS ... CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT ??
Do People, have to be, "Enclosed in a Building, to have Permission, to Worship, in a Manner, they choose??"
Is there a Law, that Can Govern the "Open Spaces, No Matter, what Dirt that Space... the Air is, above that Dirt ??"
As I've traveled, throughout some parts of America, & especially in an area, in Eastern
Oklahoma, some Property Owners, have fenced a portion of their properties, which are alongside a Highway, & cleaned that property, & established a Park, where it is Designated as: "OPEN PAVILLION, FOR WORSHIP".. a group of
people / any individual, can stop there, & "OPENLY, EXERCISE A RELIGIOUS RIGHT", WITHOUT FEAR, OF BEING DENIED THE RIGHT TO WORSHIP... IN ANY MANNER, IN WHICH THEY CHOOSE.
Now, This is What I Call... a Protection of a U.S. Constitutional Right, & I say this: "IT IS ADMIRABLE, FOR ANYONE, TO PROMOTE THIS CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT... & PROVIDE A LOCATION FOR SUCH WORHIP, TO TAKE PLACE, IN THE WIDE-OPEN SPACES... with No Limitations, as to who can have Publicly Exercise Their Right to Worship.
There has been many who have stopped at that location, just to Host Sing-Spirations / Inspirational Programs, & No Complaints have come about, with this situation.
ISN'T THIS A GREAT WAY, TO ACCEPT THE VARIOUS TYPES OF RELIGIOUS RIGHTS, & TO PROMOTE THAT RIGHT ??
It's to bad, that More "Roadside Prayer Huts, or Open Pavilions", aren't Available for Use, by the Public ??
EVEN UNBELIEVERS, "BELIEVE IN SOMETHING" OR THEY WOULD NOT BE... IN POSSESSION... OF "HUMAN NATURE"... Life, with the Blood of Life, within their (Human) Body.

Individuals, who Descend from Black Heritage.... "ONCE UPON A TIME.....
Posted by: One American Lady on Nov 1, 2008 4:55 AM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
THEY WERE THE "BACKBONE OF AMERICA... THE LABOR FOR GROWTH & PROSPERITY, IN AMERICA"...
& referred to as Slaves... then they Gained Freedom... by Legal Rights of Constitutional Law.
Now, Civil Rights have become an Indepth Issue... one which has brought much grief to Our Nation.
Well, I tell you, I admire these individuals, because of the Fact, that THE AMERICAN WHITES / NATIVE INDIANS, "COULD NOT HAVE HAD MUCH FINANCIAL GAIN / PROSPERITY... IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR THE INDIVIDUALS... REFERRED TO AS ... SLAVES".
The "Women of Color" too.... have been the Most Admirable Females in American History...& the Most Educated... of a Natural Instinct... for the Purposes... of which they have Provided for the American People.
"Women of Color", were: Midwives, delivering babies... & probably were the Best Doctors / Nurses a Pregant Female, ever had.
"Women of Color", were: Wet-Nurses, allowing many other babies, to Nurse Breast-Milk, from their bodies.
"Women of Color" were: Laborious in the Fields, for Production of Crops.
"Women of Color", were: the Best Housekeepers / Cooks / Gardeners / Seamstresses / Maids / Mental Health Counselors, & Much More, WHEN THEY WERE ... FORCED TO BE THE ... SLAVE LABOR, IN AMERICA...
(not that they aren't of the same characteristics...these days as then, for they are...they are just Not in Bondage, to do it).
WOMEN OF COLOR... ARE TO BE GREATLY ADMIRED.
(They still have the same color of blood as anyone else...RED Blood).
Besides, HOW DOES ANY INDIVIDUAL KNOW IF THEY ARE OF WHITE / NATIVE INDIAN / BLACK HERITAGE, UNTIL THEY HAVE HAD A "GENETIC TESTING DONE ON THEM" ???
There are some Native Indians, who are more than Half-Bloodlineage of Black Ancestory, & there are Individuals of Black Ancestory, who also Descend, Directly from Whitemen... but the Color of the Skin, Cannot Always Detect / Reflect this Bloodlineage, Ancestory.
Thomas Jefferson, is of a White Ancestory, &
many, many individuals, of Black Ancestory, descend from him, & OTHER FOUNDING FATHERS & THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS & ALSO, INDIVUDALS OF BLACK HERITAGE, DESCEND FROM SOME / IF NOT ALL, OF THE SIGNERS OF THE *DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE & THEIR (MALE) FAMILY MEMBERS*.
Why do you think, the Wording of the Documents
of the U.S. Government, state: ONE NATION UNDER GOD ??
From the Time, the Whitemen / the Native Indians / Individuals of Black Heritage, began to Co-Exist... they began to Intermarry... & have Offspring, who are of: MIXED-BLOOD Lineage.
This is the Reason, when a Native Indian, is Registered, as to Degree of Native Indian, there are the Words of: MIXED-BLOOD, INDIAN /
MIXED-BLOOD, FREEDMEN.
Researching Ancestory, is an Interesting Part of Our Lives / Our Heritage... & the studying of Our Own Ancestory, can Enhance Our Lives, also.
Obedience to the Constitution is Not Nearly as Difficult, as it People, make it out to be, but IT IS EASIER TO OBEY, SO-TO-SPEAK, WHEN YOU HAVE "RESEARCHED THE AMERICAN HISTORY, & THE BEGINNING OF THE GOVERNMENT FOR AMERICA & THE PEOPLE, THEREIN".
Who knows, YOU MIGHT JUST DESCEND FROM A FOUNDING FATHER OR A MEMBER OF THEIR FAMILY, &
You Can Say: "I'm an Heir to the Founding of American Government."
By the Way, the Montague (family) Seal, is on All the Documents, written by the Founding Fathers... & Signers of the Declaration of Independence.
(I'm proud of My Heritage. I descend from the Montague Family Ancestory... connected to President George Washington & Dolley Payne/Paine--Todd--Madison).
I'm a Proud, Mixed-Blood, White-w/Native Indian Bloodlineage, Ancestory,& also, from Many Soldiers who Fought in the Revolutionary War, for American Independence, so We the People... could be "One Nation Under God", with a Constitutional Type of Government... of:
We the People...

And your point was...not Qui Tam. The failure to understand the law, and the failure of Americans to uphold it,is just part of the problem. You state many things, from a claim to sovereignty and some hapless genetic journey through history. Stay off the sauce, public and federal policy is determined upstairs, don't idealize democracy in action.

Is it a civil rights issue? Let's look at what has gone on in the sturggle until now

I found a comprehensive timeline of the 'struggle' for same-sex marriage rights on this site http://BornGay.ProCon.org. It shows a variety of events that have taken place since 1970 to the present in the US, Europe, and Latin America. If you want to make a point of this struggle being the same or completely different from the civil rights movement, you should check it out.

marriage is sacred..

is what the lawmakers and supporters of a ban on gay marriage will tell you. but why? and how? since when? since the beginning of time when it was arranged and women were sold essentially as slaves from one man (father) to another (husband)? doesnt seem sacred to me.

what is sacred about men having all of the control over women in society?

and you cant even tell me that marraige is sacred in this country right now. cheating, divorce, domestic violence, re marriage, marrying people half or double your age for money/sex/fame. i think most people take monday night football more seriously than they take marriage in this country.

Obama lovers, Democrats and the Gays

California is another example of what I have consistently explained, not all traditionally disenfranchised groups care about Gays and Lesbians. And as groups, Blacks, Latinos and some Democrats and Obama lovers cast their votes of hatred against us. I make it quite clear to anyone that wants to be close to me as a friend, if you do not support my having Full Equal Rights you are not my friend. The groups above are not that to me.

As a relative from the Philippines just told me about our first (possibly?) non-"natural born" president elect, his persona reminds her of the snake-in-the-grass dictator Marcos' personality. Of course there is the exception that Marcos left the Gays and Lesbians alone while the restored democracy under Aquino started to oppress Gays by closing bars.

Irresponsible Reporting

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The author of these articles in regards to the November 4th poll results, is a fool at best! I am never surprised at the self conceit that journalists apply when they excercise poor judgement and laziness in their reporting and writing! I am only going to use one example in my protest of the Author and this website for it's erroneous reporting! AlterNet.com Headline: The Christian Right outmaneuvers and Defeats Gay Rights Supporters!" The reporter goes on to say that "something is wrong in California!" These statements are absolutes, and they are wrong! The article actually proves that these statements are wrong by actually reporting a fact! 61 percent of California voted for Obama, and 52 percent voted to pass Prop 8 with their YES vote! Those statistics prove that the Author is wrong, and obviously BIAS!! It was the average of all Californians who voted, not THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT! California is certainly not 52 percent "Christian!" The so called Christian Right makes up only 10 percent of the entire US. So how could it be relatively possible that the 52 percent vote in California was "The Christian Right?" This is an example of writing used to deceive and create dissention and conflict. The Nazi party used deceptive media tactics, and look what they caused through their deceit, irresponsibility and intolerance. I am not married, I have 5 children, and my girlfriend and I have been living together for 5 years. We are married in Love and Devotion to one another! Our faith is of a true foundation of faith. One Creator, Father of All, and full of Love and Compassion. I am most definitely not a so called Christian! I don't feel one way or the other about a persons personal choice in a Love relationship! HOWEVER, I am offended by deceptive and divisive reporting! I voted YES on 8, for the simple fact that it opens the door for a massive influx of deceptive Marital Contracts that would put an additional, unnecessary and unneeded strain on State, Federal and Private Benefits Programs. It would be wrought full of abuse, and add an overwhelming strain to an already weighted issue in Government and Business! Does that make me "Christian Right?" NO WAY! It just says that I have common sense along with the majority of California Voters, and that the Author is actually full of bull! If your in love, be in love. Just don't make a case out of it. Love and intimacy are a private matter. Sit down, shut up and enjoy one another. More government involvement and regulation, is simply folly! Just like AlterNet reporting!

Black Christians believe being gay is the worst sin
Posted by: nfamous on Nov 12, 2008 8:52 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I'm an agnostic and son of a preacher. I can attest to the fact that black religious people think that being gay is much worse than any other sin. I believe some black people believe it is even worse than murder. Why? Because of Sodom and Gomorrah and particularly cruel and sadistic way it was destroyed in the Bible. Black people are largely Biblical literalists.

Another thing that makes black people so homophobic is that fact that we all have gay people in our families. They may not be close relatives. Also most of us have seen someone die from AIDS and we think it's god's revenge for being gay. It's the same stupidity that is seen with other religious communities.

It is the height of hypocrisy for a people who have been historically judged by the color of our skin to judge another group by their sexual preference. Period. It's wrong and I don't care what the Bible says. The Bible says a lot of things that are not true and it is NOT the inerrant word of god, no matter what grandma says. When black people discriminate against gays we are basically saying it's ok to judge people based things about them beyond their control. That's exactly what whites do to us. If that's how you get into heaven then I don't want to go there because it's no different from this life.
