Traffic in Texas in 2002. A packed pickup truck swerved off a highway and smashed into two trees in Texas, killing 13 people and injuring 10 others, including children, a police official said.

Trooper Gerald Bryant of the Texas Highway Patrol confirmed the toll from the late Sunday accident near Berclair, in southern Goliad County, noting that contrary to earlier media reports the dead included the driver.

Four of the injured were airlifted and eight others traveled by ambulance to local hospitals, though it was unclear what had caused the accident and if youngsters were among those who died, according to Trooper Bryant.

The incident is under investigation. The dead were found both inside and around the truck at the crash site, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
