Tell Shell Oil Co. to Stop Gas Flaring

On June 8, Ogoni plaintiffs scored a major victory against Shell Oil, forcing the company to pay $15.5 million in a settlement. Shell had been accused of complicity in human rights abuses, including the murder of resistance leader Ken Saro-Wiwa, in the oil-rich Niger Delta. The decision was a major turning point in the case.

But it is still only a chink in Shell’s armor. The company continues to engage in “gas flaring,” a process of burning off gas released by oil extraction. Flaring endangers human health, harms local ecosystems, emits large amounts of greenhouse gases, wastes tons of water, and violates Nigerian law.  

The people of Nigeria will not be granted true justice until Shell ends its dangerous practice of gas flaring once and for all. Urge Shell CEO Jeroen van der Veer to stop the company’s campaign against the health and well-being of the Ogoni people.
