What Privileges Do McCain and Palin Receive Because They're White?

By Tim Wise, BuzzFlash. Posted September 18, 2008.

13 ways McCain and Palin have enjoyed preferential treatment in the presidential race.

For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

White privilege is when you can get pregnant at 17 like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

White privilege is when you can call yourself a "fuckin' redneck," like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll "kick their fuckin' ass," and talk about how you like to "shoot shit" for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.

White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.

White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-size colleges, and then governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. senator, two-term state senator and constitutional law scholar means you're "untested."

White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office -- since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s -- while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school, requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.

White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you. White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was "Alaska first," and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful.

White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do -- like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the eight-hour workday, or an end to child labor -- and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small-town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college -- you're somehow being mean, or even sexist.

Especially her radical church vs. Obama's. I haven't heard anything about her church/pastor yet Obama's was ravaged. If Obama had done just a few things mentioned, (a pregnant, underage daughter is the first in my mind) he'd be annihilated by the press.

It's time to attack John McCain's patriotism

I made this comment on another thread today about McCain, but wanted to post it here as well for maximum readership. So here goes my tirade about attacking McCain's patriotism:

I’m not talking about his POW record; Vietnam veterans can argue about that issue among themselves. It’s the patriotism McCain has today that counts – commonly defined as love and devotion to a person's country.

One way to evaluate McCain’s present-day love and devotion to America is to list those things a real patriot would NOT do.

For example, a real patriot does NOT claim he’s for regulating business when he’s been against it all his political life.

A real patriot would NOT lie about his opponent during a presidential campaign, such as saying Barack Obama will raise taxes on working Americans, which is false.

A real patriot pursuing the presidency would pick the best qualified person possible for his running mate, NOT an inexperienced hockey mom beauty queen.

A real patriot would NOT flip-flop on campaign issues to win votes, like saying Bush’s 2001 tax cuts unfairly favor rich people, then claiming the lopsided refunds were justified – such as the top 2% of wage earners getting back $32,000 while the bottom 20% received only $21.

A real patriot who had served in uniform would NOT vote against 70% of all war veteran legislation in Congress, which McCain did.

A real patriot who had been a prisoner of war would NOT stop a Senate Select Committee’s investigation into the fate of missing U.S. servicemen in Southeast Asia, which McCain did in 1992. Also against the adamant objections of MIA families, he sealed their DOD records and those of POWs, including his own,

There are many other examples but I think you get the picture. Far from being a patriot, John McCain is a dishonest, flag-waving, lobby-loving politician who’s forgotten what honor and integrity are all about.

All this talk about white privilege really plays well with the working-class and poor white folks whose support the left desperately needs to get anywhere in this country.

Right privilege

I think this article confuses the left/right double-standard in the media with white privilege. Or at the very least, it fails to factor it in.

If you look at John Kerry's, Bill Clinton's, Hillary's, or any other so-labeled white "liberal" politician's experience with the US media, I think you'll find that same double-standard. In today's political climate, if you're not a rabid wing-nut coming out of the gate, your ability to lead will be constantly questioned and scrutinized, regardless of the facts, and regardless of color.

I would not argue that the Obamas haven't been portrayed as uppity n*****s and Muslim terrorists from time to time, but I don't think their blackness is their main handicap, so to speak.

When Hillary was running, didn't they all say she was being batted down because she's a woman? But look at Sarah Palin. Her record is atrocious, yet the media is portraying her as the hot librarian with moxie who knows how to get the job done.

The Al Sharpton approach this article takes is is divisive and unproductive. Step back and take a breath.

The above piece is what we all see..everyone...but not an issue that this country will verbally acknowledge and deal with at a level that will produce productive change. The sooner we, as a nation, really face it and deal with it the quicker we will truly move forward-otherwise we will forever exist in the same dysfunctional loop. How to fix it? It starts within each individual all races, religions...men, women and children. By changing the mindset. What's the worst that can happen..? We grow closer as a nation..as a global community.

Why would any person with a brain? Bringing race into the discussion for comparison between these two candidates is patently absurd.

If anything Barak Obama is an example of how far we've come in this country with race issues. This guy who is a member of a minority race is not only running for the highest position in the country, but he is favored to win this thing in a lot of pols. To want to dwell on racial hurdles is absurd.

Why don't we look at the ageism hurdles McCain is having to deal with? The fact is, that we all have hurdles. Everything isn't just given to people and sure there may be some racial issues going on, but apparently not enough to slow down Obama and certainly not enough for anyone to have to write a stupid article about.

Yes, the vast majority of us in Europe are appalled that the one man who could bring real change cleaning up the worldwide G W Bush mess in warfare and finance, could well lose this election for the one reason that he is half 'Caucasian' (as you Americans put it) and half African. Had he been 'white' his ratings would be around, say, 60% - a sure victor.

Yes, we too, have quite enough racism in Europe but, for example, even in the 1960s the president of the French Assembly was a person of colour.

And today, by a huge majority we Europeans would vote for Senator Obama - not because we are 'Obamamaniacs' as some of your American media dub us, but because we see in this brilliant, well informed, well organised man who opposed the Iraq war (whose military and financial consequences have severely damaged not only the US but our European position in the world) the one person who could indeed turn the page.

From his clearly stated policies, he could indeed lead the world away from the Bush era of sterile confrontation to a new era - made possible by the end of the Cold War - of international cooperation to face the grim challenges not just for the US but for every country. Indeed for humanity. (For more see our website dipconsult.eu

A FemiNazi, but Rush Limbaugh.
funny how the normally sexist, obnoxious Neo Con Whores suddenly have become senstive to Womens issues and injustices. Able to disgard their own transgressions with one simple 'Go Sarah'
After watching the Hillrisers and 'Bedazzled' blinded Sarah supporters- I gotta give Rush credit he had a great term for these 'Pay backs a Bitch' voters. Not only are the Militant about putting ANY vagina in Office, they are intentionally turning a blind eye to the Atrocities/Crimes of this Admin and their Next Puppet in Line! McCain the 'Deregualtor', the ,man who calls his wife a 'cunt' in public, who has shot down anything which would help women or children. And his Housefly wearing lipstick , who cuts funding for Young unwed mothers in need, charges for Rape kits and Fires a Official for requesting more funds to avoid another year of Alaska Topping the list of 'Most likely place to be Raped'!
So yes, Rush there are 'FemiNazi's' Their in YOUR Party- Same women who cheer for Sarah while their 'sisters' are led away to the Political Gas chambers- "Heil Mac!" ," Heil Sarah!"

Wise has hit the nail on the head. The nail is racism. The double standard is mostly the responsibility of the corporate media.

Of course, with a President who called the Constitution "a god damned piece of paper" still sitting in office, we have them to thank for covering his and his party's ass.

McCain and Palin are beyond white. They are almost alien-like, are beyond farcical, creating a new GOP inspirational hue that goes back to Nixon. And they don't care that everyone knows that they are lying because they think that their constituents don't know enough (or are too scared) to challenge the corrupt system of GOP politics. Their main audience are God-fearing folk who have never seen a person of any ethnicity in their sad, pathetic lives. McCain and Palin are relying on this group to put them over the top.

And speaking of corruption: why is it that people who were ready to speak out against Sarah Palin in "Troopergate" all of a sudden aren't going to talk with anyone or just want to amend their complaints about her corruption, as though it never happened. Can we say "payoff"? It is clear that someone got to these people and made an offer that they couldn't refuse. This has McCain and Palin written all over it.

The thing that American's aren't really comprehending yet (why, God... WHYYYYYYYYYY?) is that this sliminess, lying, corruption and abuses of power - DURING THEIR CAMPAIGN - are a sign of things to come if these manipulators are elected.

One thing that every America need to think about in regards to Bush being elected in 2000 and "reelected" in 2004 is this:

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.

But I guess this is the third time, so middle America hasn't really learned anything, which I suppose is due to Bush's educational policy.

His what?

so-called liberals up against
White male prejudice in small companies:

The essentials of thinking in the barroom circuit who have marginal resources are these: Vote Republican because the less interference by Government, the less there is to fuck up. Taxes are the greatest cause of hardship and people who don't pay their rent and welfare queens are the cause of high taxes. Unions are
run by racketeers who take your money and if your boss didn't give you a job where would you be?
It has been my experience in small groups if this type of thinking is in majority the social pressure is menacing to any dissenter who cannot take refuge in another part of the building. The majority in such situation are types who demand that you tell them how you are voting.
Is this the average American? But is this a generation dying off?

Another example of white privilege that the author does not include is the Cindy McCain drug addiction, prescription-falsifying, drug stealing scandal. Imagine if Michelle Obama had in her past been addicted to drugs, forced a doctor to write her fake prescriptions, and stolen the drugs from a supposed charity she was running. We would NEVER have heard the end of it from the hate-mongers, including the similarly drug-addicted idiot, Rush Limbaugh. It would have been enough to insure that there was no Obama presidential campaign. But because it happened to a rich, blond, white heiress, it's all excusable by the "emotional pain" she was experiencing because her husband, John, was trying to defend himself on ethics charges in the Keating Five scandal.

McCain's Goal: To Win A Trophy, Which Is The White House!
Posted by: Redphilly on Sep 18, 2008 5:22 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The difference between Palin and Obama, who are not really running against each other, but some people try to paint that false picture, is this: People who live in Alaska like Patricia-Faye Brazel, Diane Woodruff and Gary Lungren feel betrayed. They say Palin ran up a tab in Wasilla and left. And they say Wasilla is still suffering because of it. Palin has run something. She does have experience running a city and then a state. But she did not do a good job. The Republicans are always saying that Barack Obama hasn't run anything. He hasn't. But he also doesn't have a record of FAILING at running something. Palin, by the stories being told by many Alaskans, does have that record.

My fear is that since she failed on a small scale which is Alaska, she will fail on a LARGE scale if she were to win the White House in November. She would then have dominion over the country in which me and my children reside. This frightens me to no end. McCain is sick and old. Let's face it. It makes me think that a vengeful McCain, who doesn't have anything to lose any way, choose Palin because he was angry because America and the World were fawning all over Obama and he got jealous. Sometimes his tone sounds like a jealous teenage school quarterback who lost a game to a less popular quarterback. It appears to me that this is all a game to McCain. He doesn't need the money, the fame, nor does he care about helping middle-class America. He just wants to win. Just for spite.

It's OK for John McCain to be a notorious hothead because he's a "maverick" and ex-jet jockey. But if Obama gets even slightly upset, he's an angry and potentially violent Black radical who hates America--especially Whitey.

And how about McCain and the ugly divorce and quick remarriage to someone almost a generation younger than him?

God forbid, imagine if Michelle had been in an accident, and Obama dumped her and married a rich, 20-something heiress? What would the media call him?

I must not be white then. Please don't group me in with all the things you said. I think I share the same sense of outrage on pretty much every point you bring up, but you're article lumps me in with it because of the color or my skin? The term "white privilege" itself is racist, and this article is part of the problem, not the solution.

And I'm sorry to say that, because based on the things you write about I think we'd be pretty much simpatico, but you've already pushed me out of your tent.

Racism is all about taking complicated multi-dimensional issues about *people* and finding an easy marker to lay the blame on, point the finger, and feel better about ourselves. We all do that in more little ways than we'll ever be conscious of every day. If you don't think that you're part of the problem, then you're part of the problem.

The authors observations about how the media is treating the two candidates differently is accurate- but its source is the Republican Noise Machine- not Obamas skin color. Look at the kid glove treatment that Bush gets- compared to the Swift Boating of Kerry- and you can immediately see the difference.

I actually agree with the author about white preference. I know it exists, and if I were on teh black side of the divide, I would feel totally discriminated against like they do
