Joe Biden Is a Key Fighter in Dissolving Bush's 'Terror' Myths

By Andy Worthington, AlterNet. Posted August 24, 2008.

Biden doesn't have clean hands when it comes to Iraq, but he's been a leader in re-establishing the rule-of-law in Bush's terror war.

In the end, then, it came down to this: Barack Obama needed a vice-presidential candidate with well-established Washington credentials, foreign policy experience and an ability to connect with blue-collar workers.

And while Joe Biden -- a 65-year old working class Irish Catholic, the Senator for Delaware since 1972, and the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee — has a far from unblemished foreign policy record (most notoriously in his support for the invasion of Iraq, but also, arguably, in his strenuous support for armed intervention in Kosovo, which, like that of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, paved the way for justifying war on a basis other then that of self-defense), he has since recanted his position on the Iraq war, and has, for many years, also been unafraid to tackle other excesses of the Bush administration's post-9/11 policies; in particular, through his persistent calls for the closure of the "War on Terror" prison at Guantánamo Bay.

Although he initially supported the invasion of Iraq (after trying, and failing, to persuade President Bush to first exhaust all diplomatic efforts), Sen. Biden has since become on of the war's toughest critics in the Senate. He warned of the costs of a long occupation before the war even began, and in 2006 he proposed, with Leslie Gelb, the president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, a five-point plan for the future of Iraq, which called for a federalized system of three regional governments (Kurd, Sunni and Shiite) plus a centralized government for the management of "truly common interests" like oil and border defense.

Sen. Biden also has a more personal connection to Iraq. His son Beau, the attorney general of Delaware, is a captain in the Army National Guard, and is set to be deployed to Iraq in the fall, even though, as Sen. Biden explained last year, "I don't want him going. But I tell you what, I don't want my grandsons or granddaughters going back in 15 years. So how we leave makes a big difference."

Sen. Biden has also repeatedly cast doubt on the very notion of a "War on Terror," declaring, in a speech in April 2008, in which he lambasted the Bush administration for making "fear the main driver of our foreign policy," "Terrorism is a means, not an end, and very different groups and countries are using it toward very different goals. If we can't even identify the enemy or describe the war we're fighting, it's difficult to see how we will win."

Reassuringly, for those who care about the Bush administration's assault on fundamental human rights, holding prisoners neither as Prisoners of War protected by the Geneva Conventions nor as criminal suspects to be tried in US courts, Sen. Biden has been unstinting in his opposition to the prison at Guantánamo Bay. In June 2005, he called for Guantánamo to be closed, telling ABC News that it had "become the greatest propaganda tool that exists for recruiting of terrorists around the world."

Biden on right track

Biden is a good choice for Vice President. I'm hearing a lot about the Clinton people whining, but they would have had anyone other than Hillary been chosen.
Biden also has the right attitude about the Bush administration inflating fear and the manageable threat posed by small groups of redicals that hate America.
Will the alternative offer this perspective?
Now as for the Israel-first group that's penetrated America, I think we should be pleased that Obama is less biased than McCain, and support him on that basis alone. McCain adviser Scheunemann was a big Iraq war booster and will follow a Zionist prerogative.
Editorially, I don't know if Biden's selection is that good a topic to make anti-Israeli (or is it anti-Zionist) comments under, even if you are correct about the competing loyalties and prevalence of dual nationals.

Now is the time to pull the plug on the DemoCRAPic Party and rebuild them from ground zero. The GOP are only keeping it on like support to hide the fact that our government is really a one-party system pretending to be "2". Let's just DEMOLISH the DemoCRAPic Party and rebuild it and then in 2020 when the remaining damage to America has been completed, we can have a party that represents us, provided of course that we can even take back our country and that no foreign country owns it lock stock and barrel !!

The truth is always simple but not easy to confont.

Lies, deceit and cunning are always remarkably complex and wrought w/negative energy to sustain - the lie is always needy and requires heavy lifting.

So the next time you hear 'the squeaky wheel always gets the grease' while a certain group, place or thing quickly comes to mind think what it takes to keep those squeaky lies alive.

See MSM for exactly what it is;an accomplice to the crimes.

Arrest Silverstein/Bushcon and heal or stay stuck in the lie.

It's nice to think everyone will be waiting for Biden to act as attack dog - going after McCain. He's presented as the one who really has the credentials to take on McCain implying that Obama doesn't..

What I'm really waiting for is how Biden is going to address his past comments against Obama. not ready for prime time.

Biden has in fact provided cover and validation for the bogus "war on terror."

"Terror, terror, terror, terror, terror. I would say to John, 'Let me put it to you this way. The Lord Almighty, or Allah, whoever, if he came to every kitchen table in America and said, "Look, I have a Faustian bargain for you, you choose. I will guarantee to you that I will end all terror threats against the United States within the year, but in return for that there will be no help for education, no help for Social Security, no help for health care." What do you do?' My answer is that seventy-five per cent of the American people would buy that bargain."

—Joe Biden, in The New Yorker, on what he would say to John Kerry

And you can damn well be guaranteed that Biden and Obama will continue with a slicker brand of the "War of Terror" as they have exactly that.

Any vote for a Dem/Pub is a vote for imperialism and big business interests starting with the Military-Industrial Complex to which all major candidates pay homage.

Wake up.

And this article isn't worth the pixels it takes to maintain on a monitor.

Anyone that has followed this idiot knows he's in the pocket of monopoly corporate crime and has been since he was given his ticket to DC.

Biden is as big a phony "war on terror" monger as Lieberman or any of the sellout NeoCons out of the beltway.

For Alternet to suggest otherwise is worse than a red herring.

Speaking As A Firm Progressive, Here's Our Problem ...
Posted by: The_Curmudgeon on Aug 25, 2008 4:30 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
First, to set the record, I am a lifelong progressive and have even, from time to time, not voted in an election or a specific race because I didn't like the putative liberal or progressive candidate.

But with age, I've also come to realize that one of the problems of many progressives and progressive movements is they keep talking to themselves. Preaching to the choir. Insisting on our way or the highway.

Too often, the progressive movement forgets that if we laid all of the "progressives" in the country end-to-end, we couldn't elect a governor on our own. We need Democrats, independents and, yes (he says, shuddering as he writes this), even a few Republicans here and there.

That means compromise. It means explaining things to people using language that evokes an emotional response - and not just shouting "If we don't do this, we all die" over and over again.

That's why Joe Biden is such a smart choice for VP. He gives comfort to people sitting on the fence, people who agree with most liberal ideas and are "natural" Democrats but are having trouble relating to Obama.

No candidate is perfect. The real question is do they come as close to "perfection" (from a progressive point of view) as possible for those of us who live in the real world?

Obama and Biden do.

First, Obama has to get elected, then we'll see just what kind of power he will be given by the White House and whether the precedent set by Dick Cheney will continue. Cheney is the most powerful veep in history. This is not a good thing. Cheney and his henchman/lawyer David Addington have been instrumental in the human rights abuses under the Bush administration.

Biden should also know that until the Israel/Palestine issue is resolved, and we get the heck out of Iraq and Afghanistan, there will be terrorism.

In defense of Joe, who I think is a standup guy:

First of all, I don't blame most of the congresspersons for their vote on the Iraq War. They were not given all of the facts. Period.

Secondly, can someone explain to me the author's comment that Biden's "strenuous support for armed intervention in Kosovo, which, like that of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, paved the way for justifying war on a basis other then that of self-defense)..." It seems to me that Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, are all examples of "justifying war (or invasion) on a basis other then that of self-defense," not to mention all of the countries where we have provided arms and support to groups, leaders of opposition movements, or dictators, without technically "getting involved," like the Contras, Osama Bin Laden, and Sadam Hussein!

Thirdly, (and this is a joke, I think), seeing how much fun the wingnuts have had making fun of and morphing Obama's name, how long will it be before they realize that Biden and Bin Laden sound an awful lot alike? Oooooo, scary!

Terrible Pick...

...And here's my reasoning:

1. Hillary people. Yes, they are whiney (just a side note - I'm not a fan of either candidate) and feel their candidate was shafted. However, if the Obama campaign was clever, they would have placated the Hillary people with something other than, "She was never considered," after saying she would be. Stupid move. They easily could have said, "We believe Senator Clinton would be a much stronger ally in the Senate than as Vice President due to her bipartisan negotiating skills, etc." When I ran this idea past my girlfriend (see: PUMA) she said she would have felt much better about the decision. Granted I don't have polling capability, but I'm assuming some kind of positive message would have gone a lot further than a negative message.

2. Republicans define the debate. Once again. Enjoy another loss. McCain defined Obama as lacking experience in foreign policy, so Obama bit on that with the choosing of Senator Biden. By the way, I don't think McCain or Biden have that much foreign policy experience. Give the nod to the underpaid staffers and speech writers.

I'm sure McCain will continue to define the debate and Obama will continue to pander to the middle while alienating his two strongest bases (the left and women).

3. Pro-Choice? Hardly. The people you'll woo with a bad reproductive justice record aren't going to vote for a non-white man anyways. Give it up. This just hurts the relationship with the already angry Clinton supporters.

Tl;Dr - Obama continues to alienate his bases while letting McCain define him. Enjoy another 12 years of Repugs if this keeps up.

Stop trying to force the Democratic party down our throats. The party of Pelosi, and yes, hawkish leftists like Biden and almost every other cowardly Demorat who rolled over and went pro-war. For crying out loud, even "Mr. Hope and Change" himself is showing a distinctly, shall we call it, rosy tint.

I live and work in Denver, and I can tell you this much. The people overrunning LoDo are not progressives by any stretch of the imagination. Not that I expected people in hemp pants and Birkenstocks, but anyone laboring under the impression that the Democrats are not every bit the elitist scum that the Republicans are should come check these people out. Party of the people my ass. The people I see look as if they represent, at best, the upper 10%. Even the minority attendees seem elitist. It's truly incredible.

By now, it should be self-evident that the Democratic party does not represent a large minority of Americans in any way whatsoever. Until such time as the American people embrace a multi-party system, this country will continue its precipitous decline. And given the current level of brainwashing, I don't see that happening any time soon. I think all really is lost.

Biden is not a working class anything! Whatever he was, all these years in the Senate would take Biden out of the working class.

From Cupcake at Yahoo answers:

How could someone who's 65, whose salary is 300K/year not counting the millions he gets from special interest groups aka lobbyists, including his son he got 200,000 from MBNA alone in one year, be worth 150,000 only? Even I'm worth more than that, geez they really do think we're idiots and obviously some of us are since they eat up whatever numbers are thrown to them. I bet he's worth 150 mil not thousand, if not more like all the other long term senators, unless he has a secret gambling problem.

His salary alone for the time he's been a senator adds up to 10.5 million and that doesn't include under the table contributions like just the one from his son's credit card co alone that was over 100,000, and y'all think he's worth no more than 150,000. Pathetic.

Here's Bidon on terrorism

"Terrorism is a means, not an end, and very different groups and countries are using it toward very different goals. If we can't even identify the enemy or describe the war we're fighting, it's difficult to see how we will win." I applaud this thinking but would take it a step further. "War on terror" is catchy little metaphor that makes you hate and want to fight but aside from that is meaningless because by definition, terrorism is war-proof and war on terror is oxymoronic. So before we get all worked up we better come to terms with how we are going to "fight" this monster rather than spread it and make it worse. Invading and occupying another country in response to a terrorist act is probably, well, it has proved to be the dumbest thing we can do.
