Karl Rove a No-Show at Judiciary Committee Hearing

By Rep. John Conyers, Jr., Huffington Post. Posted July 11, 2008.

Ignoring a subpoena to testify about the politicization of the Justice Department, Karl Rove reiterates his belief that he is above the law.

July 10th was the deadline for a Judiciary Committee subpoena issued to Karl Rove, demanding his appearance before the Committee to testify on his role in the politicization of the Department of Justice and the politically selective prosecutions of Democrats. Unfortunately, Mr. Rove chose not to show up.

The claim that Mr. Rove and the White House make is that high-level aides to the president are totally immune from compelled congressional testimony. Not that there are certain subjects they cannot discuss in a public hearing, nor that the White House has a right to review questions that are asked, but that they are in a class entirely by themselves -- a separate group that is above the reach of a subpoena and, consequently, above the law.

Over the past 18 months, congressional inquiries have uncovered a level of politicization that runs the breadth of the administration and profoundly threatens one of the core elements of our democracy -- equal justice under law. We have seen it in the firing of nine U.S. Attorneys for partisan political purposes, in the hiring practices at the Justice Department, and apparently in the politically selective prosecution of Democrats like Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. Thorough investigation of these abuses of power requires that Congress get answers from the Executive Branch. By ignoring the Judiciary Committee subpoena, Karl Rove and the White House once again showed their utter disregard for our system of checks and balances, for Congress as a co-equal branch of government, and ultimately for the American people.

The question that now confronts the Judiciary Committee and, ultimately, the full House of Representatives, is what action to take in the face of such blatant defiance of the rule of law. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I am considering all options. Regardless of the path we take, the end result must be the same: the full restoration of our Constitutional system of checks and balances and the principle that no one -- not Karl Rove and not the president -- is above the law.

Digg!

I find it pretty funny, and typical of our political system that Conyers is heading the judicary committee. After all here is a guy who had ethics isues which he had to appologize for and who's wife has some anger issues..

Conyers wife - ""allegedly "made several threatening movements" toward Milton in what he described as "a threatening manner" and also threatened to get a gun and shoot him, as well as stating that she "had four brothers" who would "whup his ass if she asked them." She allegedly ran at Milton, and had to be restrained by the trustees. Milton was backed up in his recalling of events by David Clark, chair of Detroit's General Retirement System. Milton has filed a police report about the incident.""

This is what we have and are getting in our government? Thugs on both sides laying politics not for the god of the country, but for their own good.. maybe Conyers wife will "wup Roves ass" if he don't show up - or get some brothers to "talk" to him!

Yet it only applies to honest hard working tax payers in this country. If you help make laws,or pass laws or even enforce the law you are not expected to follow the letter of the law as closely as the average citizen. It appears that the higher up one gets in government the more they are above the laws of this nation. Many police officers lie in court to keep from looking like they may have made a mistake. Most elected officials use their position to get theirselves or their family out of trouble once they have broken the law even if it just a minor traffic violation.Diplomats from other countries can break all "minor laws" and some have even committed murder and they have immunity from our legal system.Should the citizens have to endure the lawlessness of diplomats here and abroad just so an elite few can live life without any consequences? No one should be above the law or allowed to use their position or power to break a law.The ones in power should not only be held to the same laws as everyone else, they should be held to a higher standard if they are to represent us as a nation. I personally don't like having other countries judging me by the actions of the people in office at this time.

Congressman Conyers, you know how appreciative I was last time we met, then we scheduled the second meeting and waited to hear what you promised us. What, Sir did you say when we inquired about the Impeachment Proceedings? So Sir, how am I to trust you in charging that pig Rove with Contempt of Congress, have him placed in cuffs and have the Marshall at Arms drag him in front of the Judiciary and ask, "Mr. Rove are you willing to answer to the charge of Contempt of Congress?".
Thank you, Honorable Conyers and for your 21 terms of service.

for you I have one question:

If the rule of law is so important to you, why is impeachment still off the table?

You have become cowardly in your duties as the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

If you cannot bring yourself to do what is required of you by the Constitution, then resign and let someone with some fortitude and principles fill your chair.

This president and vice president NEED TO BE IMPEACHED! Unless and until you manage to hold impeachment hearings, you do your country and all of its citizens a huge disservice. Until you put impeachment back on the table, you are complicit in these very crimes you claim to be so concerned with.

Put your "money where your mouth is." Impeach the worst president and vice president this country has ever had to endure, and set this country right!

Bullies and Thugs

As long as you keep cowering before these venal, vile individuals they will continue to ignore and defy you and the people of the United States! Maybe you haven't had enough but we sure as hell have.

Surely you know that the only way to stop a bully is to STAND UP TO THEM! Why are you and the entire Congress scared witless of these egregiously lying, taunting, incompetent thugs? Why?

It is so far past time everyone in this administration was brought up on the criminal charges they so richly deserve. As another poster said, do your job or resign! Or wait to be voted out.

Dear Congressman, I have respected and admired your opinions on the Judiciary Committee during the criminal reign of this administration. What I fail to understand why you refuse to take your obligation to the Constitution seriously and use your powers to take action instead of just promoting your opinions through editorials.

Both houses of Congress have the power of Inherent Contempt which can be invoked and then order the Sergeant-At-Arms take Mr. Rove into custody. I could be wrong on the legal procedural details but YOU clearly have the power to do this. But instead you write editorials in Huffington Post.

Why, Mr. Conyers, Why? It seems to much of America that you have stood by while this rogue regime has run roughshod over the constitution and the likes of you, Mr. Waxman and Mr. Leahy have talked a good game but failed to act on your Constitutionally mandated responsibilities.

The path is clear to EVERYONE who stands for truth, justice and the rule of law. There is no question to "confront" there are only actions to be taken. Take them or go home, you're of no help to us if you keep talking but fail to act.
