Schwarzenegger Backs Gay Rights

By Deb Price, Creators Syndicate. Posted April 21, 2008.

California's governor has taken a humane and reasonable stance on gay marriage. John McCain should pay attention.

My nominee for Best Ex-Actor in a Very Supportive Role: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In a few simple sentences, the muscular Republican governor of California did some heroically heavy lifting for all Americans who believe in equal marriage rights for those of us who're gay.

Asked at the gay Log Cabin Republicans' recent national convention whether he would join them in opposing a proposed California ballot initiative that would prohibit gay couples there from achieving marriage equality, Schwarzenegger began, "First of all, I think that (such a ban) would never happen in California because I think California people are much further along on that issue."

Then, as every heart in the room skipped a beat, he delivered some of the most important lines of his career: "And, No. 2, I will always be there to fight against that -- because it should never happen."

The audience leapt to its feet and gave the governor of the nation's most influential state a standing ovation.

Schwarzenegger's Golden State is approaching a historic crossroads: California's Supreme Court, which has a tradition of gay-friendly rulings, will rule on marriage by early June.

If the court sides with fairness, it could immediately open marriage to gay couples or encourage the legislature to do so. Lawmakers have twice passed such legislation, vetoed by Schwarzenegger, who wants the court to weigh in. (He has signed more than 20 gay-rights bills.)

If gigantic, trendsetting California leaps ahead, becoming the second state (after Massachusetts) to allow gay marriage, foes will try to roll back that advance. Even if the court hands down a disappointment, the anti-marriage initiative will likely go to voters this fall.

That's why it's tremendously important that the popular governor is saying you don't have to be a liberal or a Democrat or a young person to oppose taking California backward.

And Californians aren't the only ones who should listen. So should soon-to-be GOP presidential nominee John McCain, his pal.

If California's court rules in gay couples' favor, McCain will stand at his own crossroads: Will he react by choosing the tired old divisive path taken by recent Republican presidential nominees? Or, will he wisely try to make the Republican Party more appealing to moderates ready to move forward by modeling himself after the Ronald Reagan of 30 years ago?

McCain unsuccessfully lobbied for an anti-gay amendment to Arizona's Constitution. Yet he opposes amending the U.S. Constitution to ban gay marriage unless courts strike down the federal law saying no state has to recognize another's gay marriages and that gay married couples don't get federal spousal benefits and protections.

McCain needs to know that Schwarzenegger's decision to oppose an anti-gay state initiative puts him in good company with another Ex-Actor in a Very Supportive Role: In 1978, Ronald Reagan, then a former California governor with White House ambitions, torpedoed the Briggs Initiative, which would have banned gay or gay-friendly teachers.

Advised to duck it, Reagan is credited with sinking the hateful initiative, which lost by 1 million votes.

John McCain is auditioning for the part of a lifetime. Let's hope he takes his cues from Schwarzenegger and Reagan when they led by gay-friendly example.

Senator McCain should not follow the California example

Unfortunately, the writer of this article didn't get it right when they said that Senator McCain should follow Governor Schwarzenegger's California example on homosexual rights and marriage. The cardinal difference, of course, can be seen in the fact that California is an island to itself on the issue of homosexuality - a far cry even from Senator McCain's relatively moderate home state of Arizona where the ruling Republican Party in both federal and state office are substantially more conservative than Mr. Schwarzenegger has ever been.

California is no longer a national leader or harbinger for what comes next for the country. It is no longer 'as goes California . . .' In fact, the second largest state in the nation Texas is much closer to the national mood than California is anymore. Even Florida's notoriously 'moderate' GOP Governor Charlie Crist supports the state's marriage amendment (albeit relatively passively) and is openly against gay adoption (which Arnold supports).

It would be egregiously foolish for Mr. McCain to adopt this stance when the conservative movement (which is in fact still a relatively big minority even in California) is in fact much, much bigger and more influential outside of California. What 'works' in California doesn't work in the rest of the country. Just ask Rudy Giuliani (the most Arnold-like candidate of all) what having big city values did for rallying the GOP base.

Thus, it would be foolhardy to adopt such an approach, especially when most Americans are to the right of California and more importantly that Senator McCain needs his base more than ever before. He should be more worried about what the South, which collectively has the population of more than 3 California's, thinks than what the West Coast thinks.

A republican Governor and the Republican God are credited with positive actions towards Gay Rights.

Who'd have thunk it possible?

The world IS getting better...albeit slowly.

Perhaps McCain should read this? His base, while normally anti-gay rights, also tends to fall in line when the Name of Reagan is invoked..

John McCain should retire. He's a hack. He used to have a backbone, but it's turned to jelly and his mind has turned to mush. He won't support a pro gay proposal of any kind because he's beholden to the base, the right wing fundamentalist nut jobs and, of course, first and foremost to corporate America which doesn't want that boat rocked.

Sorry, I'm still chuckling over the posts. McCain backing gay marriage is like Hagee, his new bud, backing the Palestinians. Neither will ever happen.

I had read an article somewhere (probably not on AlterNet) which had proclaimed the Governator's rise to power as the first step in the US Reich - which inevitably would allow a foreign-born individual (watch out, McCain!) to be president of the US and start a Nazi takeover...

what I have seen instead (sitting in the suprisingly conservative Commonwealth (its not even a state?) of Massachusetts) is that Governor Schwartzeneger (ok maybe he cant be president if no one can spell it) has a great sense of humor (not like TWINS humor, but the new CA tourism ads humor - have you seen them? they're awesome) and an actual ability to see the good in everyone - he seems to know not only what the people want but also what a government official with a soul (there are so few of those) SHOULD do to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and honestly.

Don't bring me down Bruce, . . . . I mean Arne.

Way to go Arne, I am proud of you for sure now! I am that rarest of rare a former Army Joiner who is gay or maybe bisexual, (I loose my mind sometimes and date women because I am crazy about that stuff.) women put me through college when the G. I. bill wouldn’t. I learned to appreciate the terrible loneliness and abandonment that Job Widows feel.

While you were a kid lifting weights in Germany I was a soldier in Grafenwoehr cocking cannons for Uncle Sam making war on trees and rocks. Ugly business that. If you can keep hold of your guns and the position you have taken regarding gays I will even support your run for president. If that shieskopff McCain can become President you can, he is no better qualified than you are!

I would much rather support you and your family than his, even though I am for States Rights. I am much more conservative than a Confederate or a Republican. In some respects, I am more liberal than any Democrat is. Let’s see if you can stay the course on this Gay support stand, you have claimed
