Hillary Auditions to Be a Feminist John Wayne

By Susan Faludi, Tomdispatch.com. Posted November 15, 2007.

Gender issues always matter in presidential campaigns, but in this one, Hillary is the only one playing to her strengths.

No sooner had Hillary Clinton proceeded from the Democratic presidential debate to a speech at Wellesley College last week than the wailing began. Barack Obama hit the "Today" show accusing her of playing the "don't pick on me" woman and a chorus line of media pundits denounced her for having hurt the cause of feminism by acting like the injured girl and dealing the "gender card."

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd contended that Clinton was trying to show "she can break, just like a little girl…. If she could become a senator by playing the victim after Monica, surely she can become president by playing the victim now." FOX News' Mort Kondracke preached: "I think it is very unattractive for a general election candidate, who wants to be the Commander in Chief of the free world, to be saying 'They're ganging up on me!' I mean, this is the NFL. This is not Wellesley versus Smith in field hockey."

These indictments were conjured from the slimmest of evidence. Even the New York Times, while "piling on," had to do contortions to pin the victim label on Clinton's comments. As a November 5th Times article put it: "Mrs. Clinton denies playing the gender card -- at least in the traditional sense of saying that as a woman she should be exempt from the traditional rough-and-tumble of campaigns -- and her remarks on the subject have certainly been oblique." For oblique, read frustratingly nonexistent. What she did say -- at her alma mater before a whooping and roaring crowd of more than 1,000 young women -- was: "In so many ways, this all-women's college prepared me to compete in the all-boys' club of presidential politics…. Fear is always with us, but we just don't have time for it, not now. So let's roll up our sleeves and get to work together. We're ready to shatter that highest glass ceiling."

What about that was so girl-with-her-finger-in-her-mouth frail?

The indignation of Clinton's opponents may have a motive more genuine than their desire to defend feminism. They are mad because they feel robbed. Clinton, in fact, didn't play the victim card. The gender card she played was the one every successful recent male presidential candidate has played -- the rescuer card.

Rescuing Americans from the "Wolves"

Keep in mind: The gender card is always played. It's even played in presidential campaigns where all the candidates are men (or rather, as Kondracke prefers, quarterbacks). Given the political culture -- and for reasons embedded in our history -- that card usually involves a morality play in which men are the rescuers and women the victims in need of rescuing.

Bill Clinton understood the power of that formula when he showcased his boyhood efforts to "stand up" to his abusive stepfather and shield his mother from blows. When facing George H.W. Bush, Democratic Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis learned this lesson too late -- after he failed to fly into a vigilante-style rage in response to an infamous televised debate question in October 1988 that went like this: "Governor, if Kitty Dukakis were raped and murdered, would you favor an irrevocable death penalty for the killer?" Dukakis' un-Duke-like reply about his wife -- "No, I don't, and I think you know that I've opposed the death penalty during all of my life" -- whacked his approval ratings from 49% down to 42% overnight and was pivotal in denying him the election; as was that other failed protection drama that dominated the campaign: the specter of black convict Willie Horton ("every suburban mother's greatest fear," as one of the Republican ads that inundated the airwaves put it), who raped a woman after being furloughed in Massachusetts while Dukakis was governor. His campaign belatedly, lamely, tried to counter in kind -- with an ad about a convict who escaped from a federal treatment program and raped and killed a mother of two.

Post-9/11, with the nation facing the constant threat of "savage" attack, the inclination to play the gender rescue card became an imperative -- as was in full evidence during the 2004 presidential campaign. "Every suburban mother's greatest fear" was now not a black man's mug shot but a Muslim terrorist's, and every suburban mother was recast as a Security Mom (a mythical creature, as it happened, but that's another story).

This articles title would have John Wayne laughing his head off. Hillary Clinton lacks honor, courage, and morals. She can't keep a story straight. She changes her views as fast as her underwear. Hillary has no chivalry in her, she is all about Hillary. She is an egotistical maniacal person who is only in politics for what she can get out of it and certainly not for God, Country or any women. Hillary is your typical politician, doesn't matter which party, they all are the same. She has no chance to win unless she manages to steal the election with rigged voting machines.

It is amazing to me that people can be so idiotic!
I'm not talking about Hillary either.
The political system is broken and it's not going to get fixed anytime soon.
We have to choose from what is available and they all have to play with people we hate to even be candidates.
Some votes are solely political and others are for a candidates agendas, which in the current House & Senate are few & far between. There is not even enough votes to over-ride Bushy's vetoes. A majority is 2/3 not 1/2 + 1.
Have any of you even bother to go to Hillary Clinton's website to read the 10 reasons to vote for her. You know, her agenda if she has the opportunity to enact it.?
I seriously doubt it.
I think the exact site is something real complicated, like: HillaryClinton.com
Every issue you all have been bitching about is on that list.
Keep voting for obscure candidates that will never have a chance to win. Waste your votes, like you have been doing for years. It's very productive.
Look where we are now!
If people don't bite the bullet & unite for a chance to fix our schools, get health care, get out of war, get clean alternative energy working which will create jobs, etc.etc. Americans will continue to deteriorate in the world economy.
or Keep it up & you think that Bushy is bad, wait until Giuliani gets in.

Hillary Clinton is a lightweight who is also an opportunist of the worst sort. She has a habit of signing on to bills written by others, but not necessarily sponsoring bills directly. She comes out with her policy platforms after Obama or Edwards, and if you read them closely you see that they are cannabilized versions of the other candidates' positions. She always seems to play to the feminist issue when cornered and seems to be unable to stick to one opinion for more than two minutes. Her position on licenses for illegal immigrants in NY flew in the face of the citizens of NY and she was backtracking as soon as Spitzer withdrew the plan.

When are the American people going to see that this woman will not only pander to special interests, but she requires them to think for her. She is the worst kind of political puppet and the danger she presents to the American people is very real and imminent. If I had to choose between her and any Republican candidate, I would be packing my bags and heading into the remotest area of this country I could find for shelter from the war that would follow. She wants the power, and as anyone will tell you, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and she is no exception.

When in the privacy of the voting booth, what woman would pass up the chance to put one of her own in the top spot?? This is the time and we know it. Now that the US has it's household in a MESS....call in a woman to clean up!

The progressive decision-making about Clinton...
Posted by: Q30 on Nov 15, 2007 6:36 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
...goes a little like this:

On the one hand, she voted to invade Iraq. She's in the pocket of big health insurance and aerospace. She's against same-sex marriage, and won't even say if she'll withdraw troops from Iraq if she's elected.

On the other hand... she's a woman!

Hmm, what a tough decision. The two sides exactly even-out and I just can't make-up my mind.

So Hillary doesn't need to play the gender-card. So many progressives are already willing to do that for her.

Policy-wise I'm no Hillary fan, but let's face it, she is carrying a heavy mantle as America's first viable female candidate for president. She pretty much has to make it up as she goes along and really is doing a reasonable job.

Shame on the people posting here. Almost everyone is ignoring the content of the article and instead promoting off-topic tangents. The article proves an important point that is totally lost to the mainstream--that Clinton actually did nothing to suggest playing a gender-victim card after being attacked by the male democratic candidates. Shame on everyone for failing to see the same thing that the mainstream can't see. Whatever you think of Hillary, this false accusation is really less about her than about the way a woman who even plays with the big boys according to their rules can be distorted with little to no recourse. You are no better than they are. Liberals, my arse.

I recently suggested she was overplaying the "rescuer" image. But as the underlying meaning of "the gender card," it fits.

I truly appreciate the background reporting on what Hillary actually said. The headline writers must be getting desperate to have sunk (as even in the case of the NYT) to the scandal magazine at the checkout counter level. Has the netroots cut that deeply into the publishing business? If so, we can expect to be drowned in its bloodletting.

And if anyone doesn't need rescuing, it's this woman. Painting her with cosmetics leftover from the bygone days may uglify her, but she has an intrinsic beauty that shines through.

OK, Hillary did not play the gender card. But does she have to outdo the guys as a macho toughie? Look at her policies and what she stands for. She voted for the Iraq war. Make no mistake, Hillary in power is years more of this stupid, ignoble fiasco. Why? The oilfields must be secured AND Israel insists her security depends on a castrated Iraq and a decapitated Iran. Hillary has also taken so much campaign cash from banks, big corporations and insurance companies that any kind of meaningful reform in areas such as health care in America will be impossible. Too many palms will have to be greased for anything to be plausible. Just the way her benefactors want it however. Hillary, finally, is Bush lite. Bush lite with an IQ. Male/female is irrelevent.

Why are you SO sure that H. Rodham Clinton will continue the war once elected.
I believe that H. Rodham has had to strap on the big WAR DILDO in order to even be considered as Pres. of the US.
What woman WOULD you vote for, for president? Put your cards on the table?

Any woman who will be elected US president will be wearing a BIG WAR DILDO to appease the testosterone poisoned NFL, NRA, former military crowd. If she only had an MBA as well as a LLD. More 'packing' for the front of her skirt.
Who are the females who are our new 'screen' heroines? Woman who wear makeup but who can PUNCH and SHOOT and KILL. right? That's what we Americans really value. (and double deal and make lots of 'moolah'!!! (substitute testosterone.)

Pragmatic to Support Hillary, But It Won't Make Any Difference

OK, I want to believe. I want to believe because Hillary is a women, she would be a better President then a guy. Now, my pet female dog would be a better President then who we have now and who the Repubs. would run (especially Giulliani). But, is that good enough? Just because we elect a women has that advanced us and society? As for a President, Dennis Kucinich would be the best, and that is a guy. But so what, still much better then Hillary. Now, you have me on what is pragmatic, of course Kucinich will never have a chance. But I have you on believing that Hillary will really make a difference, because she won't. As for the war and Hillary supporting it, all you have to do is listen to what she said during the recent debate. She is not going to be "pinned down" on when US troops would leave Iraq. She also will not say that she would ever act contrary to the wishes of Israel, and we all know what that means.

Reading all the posts here I am absolutely gobsmacked at the level of "not getting it" that is demonstrated so clearly. This is why there is a Dumbya in the WH!
Put all the bitchin, heavin', cryin', fightin' energy into putting THE FRONT RUNNER Hillary where she should be, fixing the economy (and that's going to take, like 50 years,) extracting what poor soldiers are left in Iraq, making massive reparations to the rest of the world, giving children the right to live with health care, need I go on. She is the front runner, she has a brain, she is a diplomat, she has a really bright first laddy by her side.
ANY Democratic FRONT RUNNER should have 100% support.
You have to evict the odious murdering thug of a weasel from the WH that he STOLE and not put, my gawd, that incredible creep Rudy (a short little man looking for a balcony)in there.
THINK!!!!!!!! IT'S BEEN 8 HORRIFIC YEARS, ALREADY!!!!
