How Racism Affects IQ

Closing the education gap between races requires a critical look at early education and health care disparities -- not unfounded statements that black people are less intelligent.

Thanks to my family support network, I never fully internalized the idea that most, if any, of my private-school peers were more intelligent than me. But, I did assume that everyone outside my family did.

That's why I never asked for help in school. I wrongly thought that asking for help amounted to an admission that black people were, in fact, inferior, as was periodically pronounced from the ivory towers of academia and other corners of the race-conscious IQ industry.

Fortunately, I was able to flip that negativity into motivation. But when I read about the remarks made recently by the esteemed biologist James Watson, I winced at the thought of how many black youngsters might continue to internalize the destructive but persistent message that they are inherently less intelligent. And I wonder if they too will turn that negativity into motivation.

Far from the modern conservative utopia of a "color-blind society," Euro-centric racial chauvinism seems to rear its ugly head in the popular press every few years or so -- from the eugenics of Arthur Jensen to Charles Murray and Richard Herrnstein's Bell Curve to Dr. Watson, renowned for his role in describing the double-helix structure of DNA and for representing America on the international Human Genome Project.

Watson told the London Sunday Times he's "inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours -- whereas all the testing says not really."

He expressed a hope for human equality but added that "people who have to deal with black employees find this not true." And here we go again.

But did you hear about the recent work of African-American economist Roland Fryer of Harvard University and University of Chicago economist Steve Leavitt, who co-authored the popular book Freakonomics?

Fryer and Leavitt responded to Watson's scientifically-unfounded claims by pointing to Department of Education research that includes test data of the mental abilities of one-year-olds.

"While you might think it would be impossible to capture anything meaningful at such a young age," Leavitt writes, "it turns out that these measures of one-year-olds' intelligence are somewhat highly correlated with IQ scores at later ages, as well as with parental IQ scores."

They found "no racial differences in mental functioning at age one, although a racial gap begins to emerge over the next few years of life ... The observed patterns are broadly consistent with large racial differences in environmental factors that grow in importance as children age."

"We cannot rule out the possibility that intelligence has multiple dimensions and racial differences are present only in those dimensions that emerge later in life."

Their paper was rejected in the second round of reviews for publication in the American Economic Review. But, these findings do seem to dovetail with insights coming from cognitive scientists.

"The sort of learning a child acquires in kindergarten and the early grades is not the true foundation of her education," leading cognitive researcher Dr. Stanley Greenspan notes. "The 'three R's' and all that follows -- symbolic and increasingly abstract academic knowledge -- cannot be understood by a person who has not grasped the sequence of skills that make learning possible."

Greenspan is talking about the pre-school emotional roots of cognitive development. But, the trend in education, especially under No Child Left Behind, is to focus on external carrots and sticks when its internal emotive experience that primarily shapes the way brains grow and think.

If we were serious about increasing student academic achievement, we would see to it that all women get top-rate pre-natal and post-natal care, especially single-mothers of future students. Instead, legislation that would increase the number of children with access to health care -- indispensable for physical and emotional health -- gets vetoed in order to appease the private insurance industry.

If we were serious about education reform, we would put a policy-emphasis on early childhood development, based on what science is telling us about the need for creating learning environments that have nothing to do with the "factory" test-taking model that typifies American public schools.

In the meantime, I've got to build up my three year-old son's EQ (emotional intelligence quotient) to counter the likelihood that his IQ will be questioned someday simply because of his skin color.

I think the factors are many, but the proof exists, just like the black's superiority in sports (just check who wins them all and its widely recognized), although there is a debate on what defines IQ exactly...

My 30 year old daughter is Cubana, if not for an incredibly observant kindergarten teacher I am not sure what would have happened.
She was tested for an MG program and they found her IQ to be 148. Though she was in a public school district that did not have such a wonderful reputation, we were blessed to have her in the gifted program. This program was through the 12th grade.
She faced the racial epithats and intolerence. I was a single mom, in college to make a better living for us. I am a person of peace and taught my daughter that the only thing a person proves by using violence against another is who is stronger physically, I taught her that words, oh how many words there are, were the way to prove what is right and what is unjust. I did not realize how the times had changed, she was having the hell beat out of her with regularity. Due to my teaching she never fought back. I feel badly about that, as she was in her teens she took it upon herself and physically fought back. I suppose we must use physical force to defend ourselves.
As a woman and a Latina, I am of Dutch, Irish and Scandinavian descent, she felt she was always out of place because within her family she did not have light hair, light eyes and she has beautiful full lips, she was teased for, that L.A. white woman pay to have, same for the tush.
I pounded into her head with barriers that she would slam into it is, Education, then Education and after that, Education. I never wanted my daughter to be in a relationship, abusive or unloving, that she could not walk away from. With a degree she had options.
First year, Loyola in NOLA for Bio-Premed, next University of the Arts,Philly our town, that was 2 years, off to Temple for Far Eastern studies, wrapping it up with her degree in World religions.
Now she lives in LALA Land, after 9/11 she moved from Manhattan to L.A., and she is an actor, director and screenwriter. Not a household name, yet, but she has a heart so pure and a soul so clean everyone loves her. She made it, through all the racism and demeaning treatment, not only by student's, teacher's also. She works hard and is respectful, tolerant, well-loved and a success in every arena that matters. Money, eh. As long as you are able to pay your bills and have a roof over your head, everything else is just 'STUFF'.
Although she does get a bit tiffed when they ask, " Are you Mexican?". It's L.A., she did warn me education is not a priority out there.

from "a room of one's own". what have we as a society, we as humanity have lost in not fostering each person to his human potential; also: what we have denied the individual we have denied to ourselves, our divine, better selves, and we can see, if we are honest with ourselves, that we now stubbornly sit, doing nothing, in our own foul nest.

humans are fools in herds, blindly following the ass in front of themselves.

Races regarded as mental problem

What a great article. I have a friend who was a "special needs" teacher in an urban school district in CT. Most of his students actually didn't have classic learning problems, but were kids who came from broken homes and, when they did not perform in a normal class were dumped into "special class" along with kids who were slightly retarded. Most of these kids were African American. Again, the label that a society puts on a kid can limit them from day one! Shame on Dr Watson for labeling.

BLACK SUPERIORITY IN SPORTS? FROM FIRST COMMENT...

Contrary to popular belief blacks are not superior when it comes to sports. "If we assumed for one second that there was a black gene for jumping, or basketball ability, then we should expect to see that gene in large numbers of people from every population that we call black." From the book The Race Myth by Joseph L. Graves, Jr.
And as far as IQ, back in 1912, psychologist Henry Herbert Goddard began visiting Ellis Island in the New York Harbor to test Jewish, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, and Russian steerage who were attempting to immigrate to the U.S. In a monumental paper published in the Journal of Delinquency in September 1917, Goddard concluded that average intelligence of the third-class immigrant is low, perhaps of moron grade.
In 1923 Princeton psychologist Carl Brigham concluded that e army tests showed the intellectual superiority of the Nordic over the Alpine, Mediterranean, and Negro races. He also felt that the amount of Nordic blood predicted the performance of the white races on the test. Without any physical anthropological evidence to support his claims, Brigham ranked the percentages of Nordic blood in the European race. The five highest were, in order: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, and Scotland. He also claimed that the lowest percentages of Nordic ancestry was found in the following races, in descending order: Portugeuse, Russian, Italians, Greeks, and Turks.
I suggest reading the book, it gives an insight on these racial misconceptions. And by the way it's Europeans, not West Africans who dominate the NBA.

and this article is an illustration of why.

I didn't meet anyone who was black until my early teens, and they were smart, interesting people in leadership positions in the Civil Air Patrol. Later, more of the same in college. Other than that the only "negros" (a respectful term at that time) I was aware of were either on the news (civil rights demonstrations) or on entertianment (Nat King Cole, etc.).

But my grandfather told me that his father walked around with a sidearm because of death threats. His father had started (or maybe helped start) a school for African-Americans. This would have been around the 1890's when this sort of thing could get you killed. I don't know any more because I really didn't have a great family relationship and didn't learn about it in detail, but my grandfather was proud of that. He also would talk to anyone, black or white, as an equal - he was a dentist.

I remember reading about the efforts of Carver and others to get an education against tremendous difficulties and odds. All those things made an early impression on me.

So much so that I thought of African Americans as working harder than others to get an education. When later I did meet African Americans I was not dissapointed and not surprised to find these new aquaintences were interesting, intelligent and so forth.

Even "Little Black Sambo" contributed. Although I have to guess I would today be embarrased by the illustrations were I to locate and view the book I read and re-read as a child, the child's view (when I was so young) was that Sambo was a hero and kid just like me. I figure it must have impressed me because it is one of the few books from then that I recall.

I remember being fascinated at how he tricked the tiger, I remember his fancy shoes, I remember that he was the hero when he returned to his mother. I wanted to be such a hero. The racial stereotypes in the caracatures were not visible to me as a child. Just little Sambo's courage and his example for little me.

what about those that have missed the boat already?

Helping people in the early years is necessary, but I want to know what to do with the many - I wish I knew the numbers - humans who have passed that age already. Does anyone know of any program in which people - not just the few exceptional ones - who hadn't had any or very little previous schooling at home or in school were able to not only learn basic facts but make the types of connections that lead to higher levels of thinking? Even trying to teach a 10 year old child subtraction who hasn't had much of an education at an early age can feel almost impossible at times. Concepts don't come easily so they can't be used as readily and the knowledge learned isn't so easily transferred to other tasks. And, of course, there's never enough money, time, and people so they are rushed on to somewhere else before they grasp what needs to be grasped to truly understand anything that follows. It all seems like such a waste.

In other words, if connections weren't made early on, for whatever reason, what do we do? This is a HUGE problem RIGHT NOW. If we put most of the resources into early childhood and health care, are we basically giving up on those that are past that age? Do we have to do that to eventually get ahead? I hope not.

NCLB not responsible for all the carrots in education

If you look at the legislation and the regulations, you will find nothing about carrots and sticks or preferences for an external motivations in educating children. This is just bad teaching that pre-dates NCLB and post-dates it, too. NCLB has it's own needs for improvement, but this is not one of them.

Last year, my sixth grader started bringing home little boxes of See's Candies. I picked him up once and he was drinking a McDonald's McFlurry milkshake, and he brought home candy bars and other sweets. His teacher gave them to kids who did their homework and who sat quietly. I had to ask her several times not to reward my son like this, that I wanted him to learn internal motivation. All the research that I've read concludes that rewarding people diminishes the internal motivation for the act being rewarded. This has been very common throughout my children's schooling.

"Stereotype threat"

Needless to say, there are a lot of issues with IQ tests. But assuming that they are measuring what you want to measure, there are issues arising from societal racism, even for academically talented students of color.

There is a Stanford University scholar who has written about "stereotype threat" in which anxiety about being judged based on stereotypes has a significant negative effect on the test scores of bright African American students. But that if this is countered, then the scores are comparable. His name is Claude Steele (and his evil twin is Shelby Steele, remember him?) The experiment I thought was interesting was the one in which identically matched groups of Asian American women would perform worse on math tests if pre-conditioned with anxiety about being women, but would perform better on math tests if pre-conditioned with stereotypes about being Asian.

OK, the problem is culture, not IQ

Black culture does trains black kids to stay at the bottom of the pack. Apparently even rich black parents permit their kids to join the black hip hop crowd because their kids don't do any better in standardized tests.

An interesting experiment would be to rewrite the SAT tests in "Ebonics" and publish a study guide. I would give odds that after the 2nd year the black kids would score a standard deviation below the median.

"IQ" is a Concept, a particularly social construction related to certain real processes that occur in ALL human beings (and even to other living organisms!) studied, investigated, systematized and otherwise made intelligible by "scientists" both in the human sciences and the physical sciences and in combination.

This Concept has a history, a particular historical development and it emerged out of the particular activities of particular individuals, in particular places and at particular times. Each of these individuals operated within particular contexts and assumptions and social organizations. Mainly European and then Americans were immensely enthused and positively zealous (some of them!) due to their various conceptions of the possibilities of knowing about all these human activities and processes (possessed by ALL human beings!).

Once systematized into a Concept and assigned a VERY PARTICULAR scale of 'values' in order to MEASURE various and sundry particular processes (the most DESIRED and USEFUL processes at the TOP and DOMINANT of course!), it became applicable then to particular individuals in a HIERARCHIC manner and attention became devoted to developing those processes and activities more than others.

Of course, EVERYBODY involved wanted to be classed amongst those who correlated to those top activities and processes!! But, alas!, there sure wasn't room enough for too many up there at those heights!!

So, it became very, very USEFUL and DESIRED to EXCLUDE many and to attend to only a very few in developing those most desired and useful activities and processes. Soon, a sense of ENTITLEMENT developed amongst these classes of persons and they began to feel themselves absolutely and categorically ABOVE all other, more lowly, human beings and assigning to themselves the right and the privilege of being dominant amongst the rest.

So, skills, abilities, 'talents', etc which are, at different times and different places USEFUL and DESIRABLE became a point of appropriation and selection where only certain and particular individuals would be SELECTED to actively and purposefully develop and encourage these abilities to their maximum (as always, with regard to the scale of VALUES as defined by the IQ Test, as designed by PARTICULAR individuals laboring under the rubric of "Science" (after all, aren't they SMARTER than all of us lowly lay-persons??).

Historically, by some work of magic or mystery (perhaps a god or the whisper of Destiny), the particular individuals most interested and involved in the Concept of IQ and its applications have been Europeans and (in the highly-questionable and very debatable related Concept of 'race') White. Why it's a MIRACLE!! It seems historically that those most interested in this Concept have retained a certain "heritage" derivable directly from the sources of the original work.

The "IQ" Concept has become REIFIED and elevated to the status of INSTRUMENT. Like many, many other Concepts in our society, it has become a TOOL (a "Technology") which can be USED and is DESIRABLE for the control, the domination and the suppression of ALL of the 'lowly beings' who dare to QUESTION its TRUTH, its VALIDITY and it's APPLICABILITY in maintaining a very certain, very particular SET and TYPE of person in POWER -- those, whose 'genes' and other chemical compositions in their bodies are ALLEGED to determine that they, and only they, are endowed with the exactly right natural admixture of genetic material to be most likely to occupy the TOP scale of VALUES on the IQ test.

It's a fatally circular, tautological and ultimately nonsensical concept being used to INCLUDE and EXCLUDE only certain individuals from positions of POWER. It's BALDERDASH!!! It's a Ghost, it's a Spirit, it's a Monster and certain sectors of our society would like it to remain just that: scary!!

Its articles like these that have people calling Black Americans "chimps." Taking human beings and reducing them to a non-human state. It’s nothing but Brain washing. Using SPYWARE to peep like freaks into supposed privacy of people’s homes and taking any normal family life and turning it into a spectacle for twisted entertainment. Even more, it’s bad enough that the current government in power is secretly behind the racist promotion of this belief, meaning that not every thing is what it seems. In times like these, it's more obvious than ever that our country is under poor leadership and it’s now the survival of the fittest. There is no political program to swoop down and deliver Black America. This became even more obvious when the GOP for 2008 election refused to meet with the Black Colleges for the political debates.

Furthermore, there are still old racial mindsets in many Euro descendants that still keep even the most educated Black American seated in the back of the bus. Realistically, comparing Black Americans to White Americans is a little unbalanced. For one, it wasn’t until the late 1960’s maybe the late 1950’s that Black Americans were truly able to make any head way in this country. Klan membership made sure of that. The power they were given has been limited, meaning that they’ve never really had a true deciding voice with the power to make change. That being the power to make change in this country on the behalf the black community was never in their hands. Black Americans have only been able to get where they are today because they were given some power but were never in a position long enough to have total power over major decisions for the development their positions in this society.

Finally, White Americans not only settled this country through much spilling of blood and ruthless determination, but also with an ingrained determination to crush any other race that would try to unseat their positions. It truly goes to show that Democracy in itself was still a work in progress in this country. With that being the case and on top of the current war situation with all it’s corruption as an example of that old belief system that has never died in the white mindset, how can any race living in this country suppose to compare themselves. I believe that blacks are just an easier target when comes to racism. However, if it is not the Blacks Americans than it would be the Hispanics as it was the Native Americans. Euro descendants have guaranteed themselves a position on the top of the food chain. I don’t think Black Americans are stupid, just surviving under the conditions that they are handed.

At one time, I had the highest IQ in my high school. Fat lot of good that did me, who had no street smarts and few survival abilities. I have one son whose testing showed him to be a rarity: an all-around "genius" according to the schools that tested him. Also no a great success in life; lives alone with a flock of cats and huge ego. He hated the private school that challenged him too little at great expense and talked his way back into the sorry LA public school system.

What is lacking in public education---aside from starting with enough good teachers with small enough class sizes and decent pay---is that essential element: teaching the young to think, to question, to analyze. BushCo, wanting a population of cheap labor, brings us No Child Left Behind, which forces memorization at the cost of thinking....clearly all we "cogs" need, to do our menial, low-pay, no- security, no-benefit jobs. As for color, it's just that: color. Get over it, if it bothers you. The rest of "color" is socialization, circumstance, custom, and societal attitudes. Oh, and religion. Do that bunch still demonize the "children of Ham"? Probably. They have to have demons, after all. Have you ever seen the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Obscene!

Intelligence of the human race?

Most people lack intelligence, whether black, white, or yellow. That is a given.

Look around you: if hundreds of certain people are supposed to be intelligent.... why are we in the mess we are in?

Dream on. While you dream... try to dream what it means to be intelligent.

It is a fact in our country that black children tend to do poorly in school compared to white children. Is it the fault of the school, the fault of white people, differences in genetic make-up, the result of decades of racism and oppression, or the result of a history of slavery? How about none of the above?

It's my opinion that the urban ghetto culture most often associated with black culture is the culprit, aided strongly by the zeal of liberals to maintain political correctness and encourage black Americans to hold onto "their" culture. But where did this culture come from? Do some reading and brush up on history. You'd be surprised to learn that what we think of as black culture originated in Europe, was brought to the southern US by European immigrants. Even while living in the uncivilized north of England (and Scotland) these people were known as rednecks and crackers. Their culture of violence, pride (having a "chip on their shoulder"), aversion to work, sexual promiscuity, unsanitary living conditions, dramatic oratorical style, etc. died out in Europe but continued to live on in the southern US. This same culture was then inherited by southern black Americans. It was only after these southern people started moving en masse to northern cities that black people in general were given this reputation that we now think of as stereotypical black behavior. The same behavior and culture previously seen in uncivilized British areas and early white southerners. Unfortunately, in our urban ghettos this culture is not dying out as it has in other places. Why? Welfare, affirmative action, the battle cry of liberals to preserve "black" culture. This culture, no matter what color its people may be, places low priority on education, hard work, and long-term personal advancement. This is not a result of being black. It is the result of an unhealthy culture.

It's ridiculous to think that the fact of being black, or Hispanic, or Asian, or white, predetermines a group's potential intelligence. However, the culture an individual is inundated with sets that person's priorities. We can even see black children from educated and prosperous families reverting to this culture in order to not be accused of "acting white." How about, instead of permitting this particular culture to continue to drag down generation after generation, we instead work on changing it? When teachers from New England (a part of the US first peopled by citizens of more civilized and educated parts of Englad) poured into the South after the Civil War, they fought an uphill battle but made great strides in educating children who went on to become some of the most famous black leaders in history. They didn't lack intelligence, they lacked the culture to support a lifestyle conducive to learning and productivity.

Please understand that I do not believe that ALL black people from urban ghettos are exact fits to this culture. Generally speaking, however, what is today condsidered black culture has its final holdout in our urban ghettos. I read somewhere, "It's not the tests that are unfair, it's life that is unfair." No one can help the culture they are born into, but if we can see how detrimental that culture is, why not change those aspects of it?

There is evidently a documented "achievement gap" that affects African American and Latino children of all socio-economic levels.

Can we address this problem by looking for solutions instead of someone else to blame?

Can we as African Americans, whites or whatever our racial background is look at the problem together without charges of racism or "playing the race card" flying around?

Can we look for ways where we can be part of the solution, instead of focusing on what "they" should do (whoever "they" might be)?

I hope so, because the future of a lot of kids is at stake.

It's Articles Like This That Gives Black Writers a Bad Name

After reading the headline, I thought I was going to read something illuminating...fat chance. The author does not even begin to deal with the very real, very sobering and ostensibly very scientific conclusion about Intelligence Quotients and race. The problem is that he dealt with on not on a scientific basis, but on an emotional basis.
We can and have to do better. We cannot allow simpering writers like this to arbitrarily whine about the emotional injustice and unfairness of even bringing up this pernacious subject. ...about 15 years ago I read of a landmark study relating to the IQ of horses. Now I have been involved with horses for the past 30 years. They are my passion. The study centered around of group of animal scientists that sought to categorize and quantify the IQ of various mammals. Their conclusion was the the horse was so stupid as to rank below a chicken in intelligence. Now I have personally seen a dog and a horse play tag. (yes, true.) And, if I would not have seen it repeated over and over again I would not believe it. The problem with the study was the questions that were asked. The horse was asked to solve problems from the same perspective as the people that devised the test. Those "people" happen to be predators--meat eaters--horses are creatures of the prairie. Horses are both incredibly intelligent and incredibly complex and manipulative. The point is that the originators of the study were asking the wrong questions.
But let's get back to the subject...there is absolutely no observable scientific reason that could justify a black person being less inherently intelligent than a "nordic" person. There is no enhancement of survival abilities between a "nordic" as opposed to a person of color. No one that has ever studied this issue can give valid logical reasons as to why this may be. Rather than constantly criticize and brand scientists as racists when they compile and publish these findings, perhaps we should take the high road and "acquiesce," to the veracity of these findings and ask them to explain why from a biological nature, should these findings be considered scientifically valid?
The problem is that when any author--black or white--brings emotion into this discussion and defacto demonize the messengers, they actually cloud the issue and prevent other people of expertise from finding a valid logical, rational explanations as to why this is not scientifically accurate. In essence by not dealing with the subject openly and honestly they are actually perpetuating the myth.
Rather than resolve this problem to everyone's satisfaction, these kind of authors both cloud the issue and exacerbate its negative impact by shaming men of Science and implying that they are racists or practitioners of Eugenics and therefore unsavory simply by tryng to publicize and clarify their findings.
I for one welcome any and all scientists' efforts to quantify and qualify these statistics because I believe there is no valid reason to believe there is any difference in
inherent intelligence within the respective races that cannot be justified by extraneous
environmental influences. Now I just wish some of these black apologists could get up the courage to believe that as well.
