Craig's a Liar from the 'Hood' Too

By Earl Ofari Hutchinson, AlterNet. Posted August 31, 2007.

Why did the comparison of Craig to the guy from the 'hood' so easily roll out of arresting officer Dave Karnsnia's mouth? It didn't seem to fit. Or did it?

Minneapolis airport police Sgt. Dave Karsnia has taken some heat for maybe being a little too zealous in putting the collar on so many guys that get their sexual kicks off with other men in public restrooms at the Minneapolis airport. But most say he is a diligent, upstanding, young cop that does his duty as he sees it. So it's curious that Karsnia lectured Idaho Senator Larry Craig about lying and added that that's what he'd expect from the guy we get out of the 'hood.' Now Karsnia is confronting a respected, GOP Senator on his lewd act, and his lame defense of it, but why did the comparison of Craig to the guy from the 'hood' so easily roll out of his mouth? It didn't seem to fit. Or did it?

From what's on the tape, Craig didn't dispute the characterization. And in the tortuous public gyrations he's gone through to try and explain what he did or didn't do in the men's bathroom, he made no reference to the reprimand. But why should he? There's absolutely no way that Craig would ever compare himself to a guy from the hood. But could he be? The answer is yes and no. Legions of white men, and that includes wealthy, prominent, high positioned white men, have been indicted and jailed for lying to judges, grand juries, congressional committees, FBI and Justice Department investigators. Over the years, the white men that run government agencies from the White House to the FBI have been repeatedly caught in lie after lie to cover up their misdeeds or blatant criminal wrongdoing. So it's no stretch to compare men such as Craig to the guy from the 'hood.'

The problem with that and here's the no part, the comparison insults the mythical guy from the 'hood.' But he is very real to Karsnia because he fits in snugly public beliefs, or to be more precise, stereotypes about the 'hood.' The stereotype fits even more snugly when it's jammed next to negative public perceptions and fears of black crime. When some young blacks turned to gangs, guns and drugs, and terrorized their communities, much of the press titillated the public with endless features on the crime-prone, crack-plagued, blood-stained streets of the ghetto.

TV action news crews and cop pseudo-reality shows have turned that stereotype into a major growth industry, stalking black neighborhoods and filming busts for nightly news. The explosion of gangster rap and the spate of Hollywood ghetto films have convinced many Americans that the thug lifestyle was the black lifestyle. They have ghastly visions of the guy from the 'hood' heading for their neighborhoods next.

This racially disfigured view of blacks as inherent crooks and liars doesn't change even when the actual crime figures don't square with that perception. A few years ago researchers at the University of Wisconsin actually compared white views of neighborhood crime with actual figures from police reports and victimization surveys in three cities -- Chicago, Baltimore and Seattle. They found huge a gap between public perception of the crime threat and the reality of it. The perceived severity of the crime problem fluctuated with the number of young African-American men nearby -- more so than with any other neighborhood factor, including the actual crime rate.

The skewed perception of crime and blacks has also deeply colored how judges and juries perceive and decide criminal cases when the defendant is as Karsnia put it a guy from the 'hood.' A 2003 Penn State University study found that many whites are likely to associate pictures of blacks with violent crimes, and in some cases where crimes were not committed by blacks they misidentified the perpetrator as an African-American.

The prevailing notion of who is a crook and a liar and who isn't has also spilled over into the job market. In 2005 Researchers at Princeton University surveyed nearly 1,500 private employers in New York City. They found that black men with no criminal records were no more likely to find work than white men with criminal records. In another study of employer attitudes toward minority hiring, some employers didn't even try too hide the reason they were reluctant or refused to hire the guy from the 'hood.' They flatly described blacks as "unskilled," "uneducated," "illiterate." "dishonest," "lacked initiative," "unmotivated," "involved with gangs and drugs," "did not understand work," "unstable," "lacked charm," "had no family values," and were "poor role models."

The last reason they gave for slamming the employment door on blacks was especially apt in relation to Karsnia's reprimand of Craig. He was righteously offended that a senator could so abuse his name and reputation by stooping to commit a petty criminal act in a men's restroom. That immediately disqualified him as any kind of fit model for decency. In that instant whether Karsnia knew it or not, and could admit it or not, Craig was the fictional guy from the 'hood.'

""stereotypes about the 'hood.' ---When some young blacks turned to gangs, guns and drugs, and terrorized their communities, much of the press titillated the public with endless features on the crime-prone, crack-plagued, blood-stained streets of the ghetto.""" ----

yep makes good press, like Iraq does or CSI types shows or anything else violent.. nature shows usually focuse on one animal eating another..how much fun to watch - why should the human animal be any different - we love to watch that too!!!!

But but are we to think that the "hood" isn't crime prone??.. is this made up??..I think not..regardless of the social reasons which can be argued forever, it's a fact..Dont walk in the hood alone - how the media treats that may seem sensationalism, but in reality, much of what reported is fact..

As for the arrresting officers comments..probably most of what/who he encounters comes from that background..so it's understandable that he uses that reference.

The whole thing is stupid. The cop has to have a crappy job to work the stalls in the mens bathroom.

As far as the 'hood comment goes, the cop is stupid too. He elects liars and thieves just like he busts them. He doesn't respect his own job let alone other peoples rights. The cop is a throw back to morality stooges that went to the romans every time some new messiah showed up.

Craig plead guilty though and that makes him the stupidest person of the year. They had so little evidence and one stupid cop against a stupid Senator.

Minneapolis and Racism

Although Minneapolis is a "progressive" town, it hasn't alsways been that way. Ask Al Franken about living in "St. Jewish Park", or look at the number of blacks arrested in Mpls vs. the number of blacks that live in Mpls!!!

Hutchinson is usually quite the idiot, but he is point in this article.

Here's some sterotypes, the tight assed passive aggresive beer guzzling swedes and nords, and the brawling czechs, and the stupid poles that inhabit MN are just like the rest of the USA!!! Fat, drunk and happy sitting in front of the tube watching American Idol while our country goes backwards!!!

I grew up in the Washington DC area. DC has neighborhoods with some pretty mean dangerous criminals.

The meanest most dangerous criminals lived "West of the Park", in the tony neighborhoods of Georgetown and further north. They were the criminals who went to work everyday in places like the State Department, the Pentagon, the CIA and the White House spreading war, terrorism and human misery far and wide.

Some 'hoods are dangerous.....

Hooded Strategy?

When I read the transcript, I thought the cop was being pretty smart to get a narcissistic, privileged white liar to 'fess up in order to distinguish himself from a lying "lowlife" from the 'hood.

Why would you be surprised by a cop, of all people, making references to a "guy from the hood"? He's probably the only one who could get away with making that comparison, since more than likely it's coming from experience. It's a reference to the kinds of lame ass excuses that some retard (black or white, doesn't matter) makes when he gets caught: "It's not mine, I'm just holding it for a friend!" or "I found it in the alley and I was just on my way to the police station to report it!" or "She's not a prostitute. She's just a friend of mine, I'm driving her home."

thank you for exposing Karsnia on both his homophobia and his racism and also classism. He is no victim. But a paranoid fool.

There is no reason that cruising should be treated as some extremely severe crime. There's an illegal war going on and the Democrat mouthpieces, so content in their homophobic spin of scandals (because it's okay to be homophobic when it's a Republican), have suddenly forgotten about the war.

Larry Craig allegedly asked in a secretive way if Dave Karsnia wanted sex. This was not necessary of a conviction or arrest. If Karsnia was so mad at this then he could have gone to the press. I have no doubt people are exploiting this issue as the gay man being a "predator" to the straight man. Hell, even Keith Olbermann evoked images of pedophilia (because we all know supposedly that has something to do with homosexuality), in his pun "To Catch a Senator".

Leave it to Earl to stretch a comment about the 'hood' from a cop, in reference to a geeky white senator who says he's not gay, into a whole article about race.

What saves this article from being another run-of-the-mill Earl/race article are some of the interesting sociological bits...Plus, it reminds me of that Richard Pryor bit when he storms into the Mobster's office trying to scare him. I had to watch it again...Hilarious...

It is amazing to me that there are some in this country that think racist behavior does not exist. These are the same people who ignore racial profiling and minority abuses perpetrated by civil authorities. They have never been beaten by a cop. They have never had someone say “oh it’s just a stupid N*GGER!”
These Americans live in the "PERFECT AMERICA" wish I could live in the wonderful world that these few Americans live in.

I am disgusted by the statement the arresting official made but not surprised. I am not even surprised that the media made no comment about it.

The MEDIA is supposed to be the watch dog for the underprivileged and abused. They had a field day with KATRINA but only because it made good news. The Michael Vick case showed that they “cared” about abused animals. We now have several cities manning up DOG FIGHT SPEC UNITS because it made good news. We also have cops sitting in airport bathrooms waiting for men to come on to them. This is not to be viewed as a misappropriation of time and money just good police work and good news.

Where was this money and man power when we need a crack house cleaned out? Where is this money when we need more after school programs for our kids? Where was this money and man power during KATRINA? Some of this manpower and money was probably sitting on a toilet waiting for men to accost them so they could drop the ultimate insult by comparing them to the horrible guy from the hood. I always love the surprise slap in the face!

In the end most of the Americans out there (even the ones that just love everyone and don't have a racially prejudiced bone in their perfect little bodies.) really could care less about minorities.

We are the devil in the hood. We are the people that occupy the "BAD" side of our metropolitan cities. The bad side of the street usually means the black side. Black men are the boogeyman and commit all kinds of crimes - especially if it is of a sexual nature. This is the programming of our country. I am a United States Navy Sailor and support this country everyday. I eagerly defend our rights and way of life however; I hate the fact that this comment has been ignored a thus by proxy accepted and believed.

The "PERFECT AMERICAN'S" will think we are blowing this out of proportion and ignore it. Just like you ignore the oppression minorities experience every day! These are the ones that thought the KATRINA survivors were better off losing everything they had because it allowed them to start over. That is the illusion of "PERFECT."

This small comment is just another small raindrop of annoyance on their perfect homes. Like all rain showers it will pass. They will never notice that they are sitting in storm alley until the tornado of anarchy tears down their "PERFECT" homes! Let’s hope they get better support then them or FEMA gave us.
