My Response to the McCain Campaign's Attacks on Planned Parenthood
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest Civil Liberties headlines via email.
For the record: Ninety seven percent of Planned Parenthood's services are focused on prevention, including family planning, contraception, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. Three percent of Planned Parenthood services are abortion care. The remark was an attack driven by the McCain campaign's need to score political points. So, I've fired off a letter to Senator McCain in response to his campaign's incendiary remarks:
May 9, 2007
The Honorable John McCain
John McCain 2008
P.O. Box 16118
Arlington, VA 22215
Dear Senator McCain:
I'm writing in response to recent comments about Planned Parenthood made by your campaign.
As you know, there was a time, not too long ago, when you and other Republican candidates for office reflected the beliefs of most Republicans: that individuals have the right to make personal, private and responsible decisions about their health, their families and their futures -- based on accurate, unbiased information and free from government intrusion and mandates.
In short, much of the Republican Party once shared the core principles of Planned Parenthood -- the nation's leading reproductive health care advocate and provider.
That is precisely why it's so very disappointing to see the troubling turn your campaign has taken -- particularly the recent incendiary remarks made by your key strategist John Weaver, who, according to The Los Angeles Times, called Planned Parenthood "one of the most radical pro-abortion groups in the country."
Millions of U.S. women, men and teens from the reddest of red states to the bluest of blue states -- including more than 80,000 Arizonans -- rely on Planned Parenthood every year for cancer screening, breast exams, family planning, medically accurate sex education, birth control and abortion services. We would hope that you and your advisers would recognize and respect Planned Parenthood's 90-year-old commitment to providing quality information and care.
In light of your most recent attack on Planned Parenthood's vital health care mission -- driven by the need to score political points for your campaign -- I feel compelled to point out that some of your most generous donors are also some of Planned Parenthood's strongest supporters. In fact, Planned Parenthood in Arizona was founded by Republicans, including Mrs. Barry Goldwater and Mrs. Maie Bartlett Heard.
Before your campaign lobs another attack on Planned Parenthood's trusted reproductive health care services, I strongly urge you to consider the health and well-being of the millions of individuals and families who support and benefit from Planned Parenthood services every day in communities nationwide.
Sincerely,
Cecile Richards
President
Planned Parenthood Action Fund

Strongly considering ANYTHING is not a Rethuglican strong point. They're simply not capable of it. They're too busy trying to satisfy what they believe are the mandates of their imaginary gods found in their so-called sacred books.

P.S. to those who don't know any good or moderate Republicans: You probably do, but they're no more interested in discussing politics with anyone who considers them "Rethuglicans" than I am with anyone who calls feminists "feminazis."

The people running the Republican Party are not conservative and they are not in-line with traditional Republican values. Today's G.O.P. is run by a gang of corporatist thugs that only value money and power. They have no respect for individual rights, democratic process, open government, accountability, budgetary restraint or respect for anything that precludes the accumulation of more money and power.
If Lincoln were of this generation he would not be a Republican and the same is true of Eisenhower and Teddy Roosevelt. They might not be Democrats, but they damn sure wouldn't be part of this gang of thieves.
I have issues with Planned Parenthood and it's largely ignored background with eugenics, but the larger issue is privacy rights for women. Planning and reproductive health is not anyone's business but the healthcare provider and the partners involved. Any politician that will not admit that fact is not worthy of your consideration.

Furthermore, McCain has clearly lost whatever political soul he had, as has the Republican Party, which used to be a big supporter of reproductive rights.
Shame on all of them. And long live Planned Parenthood.

You righties can't just shut the hell up once in a while and stop attacking people? What's amusing about it is that this right wing tactic of 'bash the left any time someone questions you' is basically just projection. This 'superiority' complex you talk about is most manifest in the Conservative side of the aisle, pal. Who's telling me I'm not allowed to have gay sex if I want it ( I happen to be straight ). Who's telling me who I am and am not allowed to Marry? Who's telling me that my kid must learn the Ten Commandments and pray to the Christian God in school? Who's telling me that I don't have the right to say I want to die if my brain stops functioning for 15 years. Who's telling me some BS about this being a Christian nation and demanding we put 10 tonne stone monuments in our Courtroom to their religious artifacts?
It ain't the Dems. It ain't the Liberals. Look in the mirror. EVERYBODY gets the same rights here, whether you like it or not. That means stop trying to tell ME what i"m allowed to do by YOUR standards.
dems/liberals problem over the years is their view that they are above all others
How many liberals do you personally know who are like that? One? Two? I don't consider myself superior to anyone. I just want to live my life without some asshole coming along and telling me what to do. That doesn't make me superior nor does it make me think I'm superior. I don't get on the news and start talking about how people should live in their homes. What people do in their own homes, sort of hurting another person or denying someone their rights is NONE OF MY BUSINESS. You want to hump cantelope? Go for it. I could care less. Does that sound like someone who thinks he's superior?
Further more, the Republican party is completely in the pocket of the corporations that are currently screwing us all over. I didn't see Exxon using Liberals/Dems to discredit science. It wasn't Dems that built a $250 million dollar bridge in the middle of nowhere Alaska. It wasn't Dems who wasted Billions on BS Abstinence Only Education.
Most moderate republicans voted dem because of the war..The dem party is still a party in jeapordy - many thoughts are out of touch with reality -
Whatever. The only person out of touch with Reality is people who would continue to vote for the morons who started this war in the first place. Once people figured out the Republican administration was lying to us and wiping their backsides with the Constitution, anybody with half a brain who isn't making a profit off the war would vote for anyone who would put a stop to it. Thinking there's any other reason is out of touch with reality.
Giuliani is still the front runner and in the lead of both repubs and dems -that should tell you something about what the public thinks of repubs..
Yeah it tells me that you're either full of it, or the guys who support Giuliani are the same morons who elected Bush the second time around - who never bothered to see if the guy is qualified or not in the first place. Giuliani is a terrorist using fear of another 9/11 to gain him votes. The majority of New Yorkers hated him as major and the fact is that IF he were in any way capable of handling Terrorism, he wouldn't have put the Emergency Services Bunker in a building that had already been attacked by terrorists once before and he would have made sure the emergency services people HAD the equipment they needed to do the job.

George Bush is a latter day Herbert Hoover-- a symbol that the opposition party will use for decades for incompetence, making the Republicans a perminent minority party. And keep in mind that Hoover was much smarter and more sympathetic to the plight of the country than our present idiot-in-chief.
