Hate from Within: America's Home-Grown Terrorism

By Roberto Lovato, New America Media. Posted May 10, 2007.

During the immigrant rights marches last week, plots to attack immigrants with grenades and semi-automatic weapons were uncovered in Alabama, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

As cities and towns across the country watched the immigrant rights marches last week, some saw a spike in violent attacks targeting immigrants. In separate incidents, authorities arrested groups and individuals caught stockpiling grenades, semi-automatic weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition in preparation for attack on immigrants. Immigrant rights advocates say the series of incidents and reports indicates what they are calling a very dangerous trend that they believe is fueled by the anti-immigrant climate.

In addition to the well-reported incidents involving police violence against immigrants in Los Angeles, last week's less publicized incidents and reports involving actual and potential violence against immigrants and their supporters included:

  • The arrest and indictment of six members of the Alabama Free Militia who, according to federal authorities, were allegedly preparing to attack Mexican immigrants near Birmingham, Ala. with grenades, semi-automatic weapons and 2,500 rounds of ammunition confiscated during a recent raid by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
  • Washington, D.C., area police arrested Tyler J. Froatz Jr., a 24 year-old man wielding a gun as he allegedly attacked marchers at a local immigration rally last Tuesday. U.S. Park police say Froatz had two knives, a hammer, a flare gun, a taser stun gun and pepper spray when they captured him. A subsequent police search of Froatz's apartment yielded 15 guns, a Molotov cocktail, a grenade and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, according to authorities.
  • An early morning fire last Thursday at Casa de Maryland, a day-labor center near Gaithersburg, Md. was declared an arson incident by Montgomery County fire investigators. Representatives of Casa de Maryland, which received regular hate phone calls and emails prior to the incident, were reported in The Washington Post as calling the incident a hate crime and a "natural consequence to the ongoing debate over immigration." County executive Isaiah Leggett called it "shameful and despicable."

Each of these incidents represents an alarming development in and of themselves. But together, advocates like Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, say they represent a potentially catastrophic turn in the already heated politics of immigration. "This is very dangerous and deeply troubling - but not a surprise," says Salas, whose organization has documented an increase in hate crimes in the Los Angeles area. "These crimes are not just happening because of the organized hate groups," adds Salas. "It's also happening because of the (anti-immigrant) climate created by irresponsible politicians and media personalities like Lou Dobbs who use their bully pulpits ... against a specific population. This gives the green light to every crazy to do physical harm to immigrants as if it's their civic duty."

She and other immigrant leaders fear that the lack of official condemnation of, and the lack of media attention to, these violent attacks against immigrants has created a national numbness to threats to immigrant life.

With the exception of the LAPD violence, little attention has been paid to the other incidents across the country, outside of a few local stories (in Los Angeles, Washington, Maryland and Birmingham) and a few Spanish and other foreign language reports. And, with the exception of condemnations of the police incident by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Congresswoman Hilda Solis and other elected officials, no single politician of national stature or presidential candidate has said anything about what some analysts say is the exponential growth of violence against immigrants. A report released last week by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups and hate crimes, found that, "The last two years have seen the birth of at least 144 'nativist extremist' groups -- organizations that do not merely target immigration policies they don't agree with, but instead confront or harass individual immigrants."

Commenting on what she considers the dangerous inversion of values behind the attacks, Salas said, "Because it's immigrants being threatened and targeted with violence, this is not a big story. It's only a story for immigrants."

A few scattered instances of extremists, nutcakes or both are used to smear Americans who have the outrageous idea that borders are to be closed to nonauthorized entrants and that not all "immigrants" are the same. Some are legal and some are not. How outrageous for Americans to ask their govt to enforce existing laws about legal entry to the US.

Naturally the article did not report any illegal violence initiated by the "immigrants" against the police and others. The LA incident for example featured law breaking by the cops and by the demonstrators. None of them should receive a free pass, but if any arrested demonstrators are Illegal immigrants(yes, shock, such people do exist outside the fevered imagination of neo-Nazis) they might be extended the privilege of a "free" trip back to Mexico, El Salvador, or what ever failed society they crawled out of to illegally enter the United States.

...the guy with the van full of weaponry had been called Ahmed. If these guys had been anything remotely approaching Middle Eastern, Muslim, or probably even Indian, Sikh, Hindu, North African, or whatever. The media would have been howling about thum thar turr'rists, the Bush junta would have bleating about how "they hate us for our freedoms, not because we're killing millions of 'em", and average (or below average) Americans would have shrieking to lock them all up and torture them forthwith.

But they're white, so there's no drama.

What "Rights" exactly were the marches about?

I am a legal immigrant.

I accept the fact that "No taxation without representation" went away a long time ago, but since only about 30% of US citizens vote now, voting can't be that much of a big deal. Appart from not being allowed to vote, or serve on a jury (An advantage!), what "Rights" are these immigrants looking for which they don't already have?

I would not attend an "Immigrants' rights" march. Why would I want to draw attention to myself? It is easier just to sit home alone, listening to foreign radio stations over the web, or watching foreign films on DVD, sipping imported drinks and eating imported food, and ignoring the country and people which surround me, than it is to go and make an exhibition of myself in public.

After all, if they're so angry about it, they'd join the fight to change America's foreign policies of "free" trade and wars for oil that have caused all this pushing residents off their lands and forcing them to be "illegal" immigrants in the first place. Then again, I figured America had already long lost the "war on terror" even before 9/11 and is further losing.

It's like John Dillinger complaining that he was "singled out" and "prejudiced against" by the bank guard for shooting at him while breaking into the bank.

The Biggest "America Haters" are the ones in our government...

these politicians, and their media mouthpieces always like to tell us how certain people hate america, and maybe these "homegrown" people do. maybe not.

We're also told, over and over, that people who oppose Bush's policies around the world just MUST be "with the terrorists", "want us to lose the war", or something similar. They are calls to silence the opposition, have people deported, or even tried for treason.

Surprising, but true. A few minutes watching someone like Hannity or O'Reilly would make this quite clear.

In my opinion, the greatest threat to this country has come from the greatest haters of what America stands for - liberty, peace, and prosperity....and those are the ones who want to throw away these ideals to satisfy their lust for power and war.

No Surprise Here...

What we're seeing is the result of our government pushing the American worker out of jobs and giving them over to foreign laborers, illegal or not. Our government supports the activities of illegal aliens whether they're being used to suppress wages, degrade workplace conditions or replace American workers outright.

What's going on here is no different than what Saddam Hussein did by bringing Arab sunnis into Iraq as a pressure against and a dominance over the native shiite population. It's the same thing that China is now doing to Tibet by settling Han chinese into the Tibetan countryside.

It's all a move to destablize, disempower & disenfranchise the American worker & American middleclass. Bush doesn't give a shit about any illegal immigrants except as how he can use them against American interests. The real American interests that is, not his empire building.

Rather than labelling these people terrorists we should be looking at the real sources of their violence and frustrations and that would be a president & government run by corporations intent on making third-world slaves of us all. My preference would be that these people use their guns & bombs on corporate targets rather than people in the streets. Put the fight where the fight belongs.

If we are going to insist that "You people should go back to where you came from."....ALL OF US had better start buying tickets back to our European countries of origin. The only people who can stay here, are NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS! After all, fair's fair.
We are a nation of immigrants, aren't we!!!! Were ALL your forebearers LEGAL immigrants?

How about annexing Mexico. we can call it the Mexican territory and immigration could then be both ways. the current Mexican gov. would be disbanded in favor of a territorial governor and people living in Mexico would be subject to our laws and labor standards. then there wouldnt be any illegal Mexican immigrants.

Vigilantism always arises when crime is unchecked by authorities.

When the government refuses to enforce the laws people get desperate to control crime in their neighborhoods and so 'take the law into their own hands'. This has happened many times in the past and is a part of human nature. Anytime the police/government become corrupt, refuse to enforce the law, or ignore law-breakers citizens will, eventually, rise up to correct the situation. As long as the corporatists insist on importing slave labour and refuse to secure the borders the grass-roots movements will grow and get stronger.

Is is sad that White Americans think Mexicans are the problem. Or Blacks, Indians, Arabs, or anyone else.

The problem is we have a government that supports the Rich= instead of the American People.

The problem is we have a President that calls our Constitution
an 'old sprap of paper'.

The problem is we have Religious Nuts and corrupt Corporate interests running this country-and ignorant working class people who are happy just as long as they have a new car in the driveway and enough beer and pizza while watching football.

"Keep you doped with Religion and Sex and TV. But your still fucking pesants- as far as I can see".

Them Rotten Illegals!!!

It is so predictable that some idiot was going to go on and on about how these illegals are breaking the law... Now if these same idiots would also comment on the number of people killed by drunk drivers, by speeding drivers, by guns, illegal and otherwise, by intrafamilial abuse, on how much the national debt could be lowered if people were honest about what they pay in taxes, etc., then maybe they would be worth listening to. But as it is, they are so bent out of shape by a civil wrong, but actual criminal conduct doesn't bother them. It makes me wonder just how law abiding they really are.

It says a lot about actual criminal conduct that the arrest rate for undocumented workers is lower and the employment rate is higher than for citizens. What does that say about which group is better for the country and which group needs to be expelled?

An article by Stan Goff, an exSpecial Services member in VietNam, talks about the breeding grounds for fascism. One of the main requisites is to have a "subhuman" ethnic minority to beat up on and which "good" people can abuse with no feelings of guilt. All you people who are frothing at the mouth about illegals need to look in the mirror and analyze what you see. It is not pretty.

A law that is not enforced is effectively null

The U.S. government has endorsed full scale immigration into the U.S. from anywhere in the world by default due to its lack of enforcement of current immigration laws. If the laws are not enforced then they may as well not be laws.

So what we have is a situation where the laws are still on the books but the government refuses to enforce them. The reason they are still on the books is because the masses, the people, would "throw a fit" (who really knows what that means these days, maybe they'd protest and be shot by riot police) if the government moved to remove those laws.

There are natural born Americans that are willing to do the government's job of enforcing immigration policy. Of course the government does not want those policies to be enforced so they will move to prevent the minutemen et al from doing anything to stem the tide of immigration into the U.S.

So the bottom line is the U.S. has no borders and there is no such thing as an "illegal" immigrant. Just accept that those running the country have decided that flooding tens of millions of immigrants into the country is a good thing.

Or do we still entertain silly ideas about the people of the U.S. being in charge of their government? Clearly that isn't the case my friends. Even the majority no longer holds any sway in this country. Who even knows who is really in charge at this point?

I'll tell you who isn't in charge, the people.

Ya know, I can't really say I am surprised.

Let's take an HONEST look at American History, o.k.?

As soon as the first folks got off the boats and ran into millions of indigenous peoples, the europeans immediately began to kill and inslave the native americans in persuit of gold.

Fast foward thru the murder rape and greed timeline you get sharing of infected blankets for these people and an importation of aficans for slavery. Slavery and Jim Crow was a profitable abomination that lasted for a horribly long time and really hasn't left.

Our slave owning founding fathers wrote such beautiful words in the constitution and declaration of independance that declared BY GOD no less that all men are created equal and all that bullshit...you wrote it, bragged about it to other nations and NEVER practiced what you preached.

RACISM is the issue.

RACISM built this country, enriched the ruling class that is now destroying the country and will be the downfall of america.

You had a brief BRIEF time to solve the issue through the civil rights era that came to a screaching halt with REAGAN. Since that pig Bush stole the election we have lost decades of racial understanding and progress.

The pathetic racists ( you know who you are) supported white supremacy from the beginning; you've lied to and taken advantage of every other race on the planet for your own selfish needs.

Bush sat on his ass and LAUGHED at the Katrina victims - hardly a fitting response to a chimp that claims to be such a GOOD Christian.

Imus makes and off color joke and gets booted off the air and Rush OXYCONTIN Limbaugh can play "Barack the Magic Negro" song on his show and nobody says a damned thing.

You igored the problem; inriched yourselfs and now the infection has progressed into cancer. You are seeing the last days of the American experiement. You have destroyed our country.

I as an African American (or whatever I'm supposed to be called this week) I cannot wait for this place to collapse completely.

Might even things out at last.

Who needs TV when we have this comedian to entertain:

"the dark skinned people being pushed in the US now (the one's you call illegal)--Pushed where? Back to where they came from? They should be proud of their "heritage" and go running back to it. If they are so noble, then they would want to advance their own society. And yes, they are illegal, just the same as if I (an evil white Amerikan (such a clever cliche) were to squat and deficate permanently on Mexican soil.

"....are actually displaced relatives of these original tribes (Azetcs, Inca's)"...== those wonderful, human sacrificing, rip-your-heart-out-and-eat-it, neighbors you'd just love to have.

"go to mexico now and look at the ruling class..." No thanks, then I'd just get the urge to come North and better my life among psychopathic europeans.

"they are "white" mexicans, traced back to the "white" roman catholics.....thus, the european plague has also infected mexico as well, and continues to do so to this day"----Perhaps us white europeans should go down there and do some more breeding, so our infection can help them create a society that people won't run away from in millions.

Agreed, the first, Americas biggest mistake. But do you ever wonder how those poor african slaves made it to the ports to be sold off? Hasn't really left is factually correct. Africans still sell their brothers to slavery. Uncomfortable thoughts, the lot.
