Some steps in the right direction, but the only way for people to be truly equal in regards to marriage, for example, is to get the government out of marriage altogether....

Otherwise, we leave individual rights and local concerns in the hands of D.C. politicians...

I encourage everyone to give to or join HRC. The Human Right Campaign is the largest GLBT organization in the US.

This last Friday my partner and I attended the 2007 Leadership Summit in DC. There we went to the Mansfield Room in the Senate Wing of the Capitol Bldg. We met with Bob Casey, newly elected Dem in PA who ousted Santorum. We met with another ally named Mark Kirk, who is a Republican from IL who is on our side with respect to the Hate Crimes Bill. Then Debbie Stabenow from MI, who is sponsoring the bill was there to give her message. Lastly, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer gave a little speech about equal rights. All of those Congressmen are straight. They are on our side. They sponsor, co-sponsor and support gay rights because it's the RIGHT THING TO DO.

We have allies who are NOT gay. We have allies who are NOT Democrats, too. Don't think all this progress comes just from gay legislators, etc. We have allies all over the place: straight family members who write letters about equal rights. Clergy who are tired of the right wing fundamentalists having taken over their message of love and inclusion. The list is long and is getting longer as each year goes by.

Fight the good fight, yes. But don't think it has to be just gay people who will help us win it.

It's great that queers in public office are doing their jobs, but surely it's hats off to decades of agitation on the part of gay movements. And are we sure that marriage - that failed intervention of the church and state in our bedroom - is the only benchmark we want to use? I'd love to have good health care, but why must I marry to have it? Let's keep our vision broad.

Yes, the breakthroughs are impressive, but they're not due only to the presence of gay politicians, even as important as they are. The breakthroughs follow on the heels of the last election which removed several of the most obstinate anti-gay bigots from political office at both state and federal levels.

And, to those who emphasize the importance of our non-gay allies, I agree. They are crucial. But the glacial progress of the gay civil rights movement in America (compared to Canada and Western Europe) suggests that we don't have nearly enough allies, especially on the left where we should expect far more wide-ranging support than we're getting.

Even here at AlterNet, the posts on the message boards in response to gay rights issues are just as often negative or non-committal as they are supportive. That's a concern, because it suggests to me that a significant portion of the left's rank and file might not be in harmony with those leaders of the left who support gay rights.
