New Right-Wing Craze: Using Bible Quote to Pray That Obama’s 'Days Be Few'

A new slogan is making its way onto t-shirts and even teddy bears: 'Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8,' which reads, 'Let his days be few; and let another take his office.”

The newest far-right craze is an anti-Obama slogan that is making its way onto t-shirts, bumper stickers, mugs, and even teddy bears: “Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8,” which reads, “Let his days be few; and let another take his office.” The meme is also taking off on Twitter, with conservatives calling it “hilarious.” Commentators have noted that it’s unclear whether the intent is to hope for an end to Obama’s time in office — or an end to his life. But a look at the lines in the rest of the psalm hint at the latter:

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labor.
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

Diana Butler Bass at Beliefnet explains that Psalm 109 is one of the “imprecatory” prayers, “a lament in the form of petition to destroy one’s enemies.” While perhaps intended to be a joke, she notes that the psalm actually “entreats God to destroy the president”:

It is the personal prayer of an individual, someone who has been dealt an injustice by another–and usually more powerful–person. The words of Psalm 109 are those of deep agony, the longings of a victim for retribution and justice. This psalm is considered one of the most difficult of all the psalms–full of violent images of vengeance and death.

Quite a few of the “Pray for Obama” items are being sold at CafePress.com, although many of them have been taken off of the site (here’s a cached version of some of them). Cafe Press representative Margene H. told ThinkProgress that while the site took down some of the “Pray for Obama” items today, it is now in the process of reinstating them:

We initially pulled the Psalm 109:8 content from our products today because broader media dialog indicated that these designs potentially suggested violence towards the president. Based on current public discourse and further review of the actual content, we have determined that it is fair political commentary and we are in the process of reinstating this merchandise. As with all of our content, these designs will continue to be reviewed and if at any time their meaning is construed as advocating violence we will revisit our decision.

On Tuesday, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow spoke with “Patience With God” author Frank Schaeffer, who said that while the psalm was “frightening” in a secular context, it’s even “more threatening” in a biblical context.

Religion and Violence

Another perfect example of why Christianity is one of the most violent religions. Crusades? Inquisition? They now invite violence towards our president wishing his children to be beggers and his wife to be a widow. The most non-violent people I know are those who are not religious at all. Can you imagine the uproar from the ultra rightwinger crazies if this had been directed towards Bush instead?

Shortly after the Fort Hood shooting a townhall.com poster explained that Obama was connected with the shooting because, he said, the total number of wounded and dead, including the unborn baby of one victim, totalled 44 and Obama is the 44th President: thus, Obama's signature.

Yep it is one of the funnier ones. Of course for those with no sense of humor, you can look at it as asking God to limit the days in office of a man who makes it clear he has no use for the Christian God.

This is a bridge too far! They should be brought to justice, convicted and put in jail with the 9/11 murderers. This is totally unacceptable. These people still live in the Middle Ages just like the ones who blow themselves up in the middle of a crowded market. Is that what religion does with people??

I don't like the anti-christian rhetoric I see. It seems to me that the most intolerant people are those who preach tolerance. True christians believe in freedom of choice. They also believe in consequences but they believe those consequences should be delt out by God not the gov. When the gov makes social policy such as putting a stamp on marriage whether it be hetero or homo, it is asking for us to comment on what we feel is right or wrong. They should not be asking us. I think if the gov would stay out of social policy (marriage, paid abortions, forced charioty)we could all get along much better. My opinions about right & wrong would have no effect on my left leaning friends & our government would not be distracting us from more important matters...

Soliciting assassination of the POTUS is ILLEGAL !

Given the "treasonous nature" of the statement made by the Dixie Chicks, and the amazing amount of time and energy put into the collusion against their careers, I would suggest that soliciting the death of the president is far and away more sinister and vile.
I would further advocate anyone wearing such clothing or signs or symbols upon their person or vehicle be stopped and if not arrested for conspiring to kill the president, at the very least a field interview be made and their information placed into the files of threats to American leaders.

There is no justification to attempt to get the president killed beyond disrespect for the American political system, and failure to accept that THEY LOST and are the MINORITY !
LOCK THEM UP !

Sick, Twisted & Pathological, But Karma Will Come Calling

No matter what your personal opinion of another human being, to wish them dead and their children Fatherless is as sick as it gets. No religion would condone this and anyone professing to be "Christian" who wishes deliberate harm and ills on another person or their family, should also be made abundantly aware of the acts for which stoning was used in ancient times. Perhaps they would appreciate those antiquated edicts used on them!

I am a firm believer in karma and I would not wish to be in the position of these pathological beings as it comes back around the cycle and returns to them. Our politics and media have gone far beyond dysfunction and have escalated to a twisted place like I never thought possible. IMHO, this is treasonous and should be treated as such!

I can't help but wonder how the "Right or wrong, I support our president," jargon that Republicans spewed during the last administration—as "their president" turned the world into... well... what we're now dealing with...—has turned into this. It's absolutely disgusting.

Kill Bush T Shirts with a bullet hole near the heart area with a blood stain didnt seem to bother people much.

This is where freedom of speech stands or fall. As much as one hates any death threat style products directed at elected officials, the First Amendment is there for one and all.

As a Christian I am perplexed how any Christian could use an out of context Jewish text to suggest one hope that President Obama dies. Since the idea of Christianity is to turn the other cheek and pray for those who do you wrong.

How, may we ask, are these Psalm 109ers much better than the jihadists who eliminate foe and friend alike with bombs? If there is such a thing as blasphemy these Psalm 109ers are guilty of it. And aren't the fundamentalists who hurl these biblical imprecations around the same types who claim to believe that ALL leaders of nations are appointed by God? Do they want to remove a president who many fundamentalists believe was chosen by God?

Psalms 109 actually is PRO Obama not ANTI Obama
Posted by: MotherLodeBeth on Nov 20, 2009 1:44 PM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Pslams 109 in its entire reading actually could actually be suggesting that the prayer hopes that the Lord would punish and even strike dead those who seek to harm the needy and poor. Not President Obama.

The last two verses even mention the needy. 30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng I will praise him. 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him.

So conservatives and Republicans who are against healthcare for all, and who prefer helping the wealthy and powerful should perhaps read the entire entire chapter of Psalms 109 and not just a few verses!!!

King David was the rumored author of the book of Psalms, if my memory holds true to my seminary training.
We should remember that David also sent one of his generals into battle so that David would not have to compete with him for his wife.
The Psalm could have been authored by, oh, Clinton or even his name sake Senator Vittor.

GOD IS DEAD KILLED BY THE LOGIC OF "THOSE THAT BELIEVE IN ABSURDITIES WILL SOON COMMIT ATROCITIES!" A OBSERVATION OF ItalicsVOLTAIREItalics

AND A THOUGHT FROM THE GREAT ARMADILLO,
BARROW A. DILLO

It would seem to me that people do not know the difference between the words "liberal" or "conservative" or what this all adds up too.

This is just another element of "cybertribualism" a creation of how primitive Homo Sapiens still is.

With lack of gray matter and the fear, terror and lack of self respect in the virtual reality we live in as Phil Collins song says "Just another day in paradise"!

I would say we all need a rehab for learning disorders and this is what reality is all about.

Just a thought from an old armadillo trying to understand what “man” is all about.

The world is full of sick jokes and those who rant, scream and wish to PR this to promote hate, dishonor for the sake of their desire for power, money self adulation in their own “cyber ghetto following of thoughtless lemelings looking for a truth that will never come.”

This is the gang of the nightmare of non think whom fear, anger and LET hate rule for they are always acting in as just another "Kafka cockroach" looking for their dung on a bath room floor in the lost great media tent of bought and paid for PR tape worms that live as parasites of others gray matter.

These Christans and there fellow evangelical
"Al the Cadia" traveling in the land of OZ have hit a melted road of plasma brain in a melt down to non-think.

one thought "Get a Life!"

There are two sides to every argument

When one gets down to the basics, find out whether these "christians" are actually honest practicing christians that follow EVERYTHING the Bible says and one can bet a dollar to a dime that there will be a whole lot of, "Yes, but that is not relevant anymore".

Whether they are supposed christians or totally non believers like many who are commenting, much of the verbage presented tells us that you are just as intolerant as these socalled "christians". You are calling for similar treatment of those who DO NOT REPRESENT CHRISTIANITY, but just because they claim to be christians, you too fall for the falsehood.

YOU are no better then they. Clean your own yard before you try to tell me how to clean mine. Stop the Christ bashing and learn how Christ actually treated people. Learn the realities of the Old Testament and stop misquoting it like these pseudo christians who really are not christians at all. Sure, they might be leaders in their churches, but just because they call themselves christians and lead organisations does NOT mean they are real christians. If you ask them about the 10 commandments, they will probably tell you that they have been done away with. THAT will tell whether they are REAL Christians or not.

Jesus said,"I have not come to destroy the Law and the Prophets, I have come to fulfill it all. Fulfill does not mean doing away with something, it means to carry it out in its fullest. Jesus did and that is the example that He left us. Anyone calling themselves a christian who sprooks off this garbage and quotes Bible verses to back up their diatribe IS NOT A CHRISTIAN. they are working with Christ's enemy and you who fall into the trap set by the enemy to degrade Christ are also working for the enemy.
Well, say what you will. That is the situation of both of you.

One can only call them religious zealots, not Christians by any stretch of the imagination. They will use anything to try to legitimize their actions and their beliefs.

No different than the millions of German Lutherans and Catholics who happily murdered millions of Jewish men, women, and children, or the Ku Klux Klansman that raped black women, lynched black men, and bombed churches killing black children.

But then how can there even be a god when someone like George Bush can steal the presidency, or an Oliver North can be resurrected from a traitor, thief, liar, and now born again as a news commentator. These pseudo-Christians go against every teaching of Jesus and have no right to call themselves Christians but in more than 2000 years it has not stopped anyone from doing so.

Just as the Muslims are trying to dis-integrate themselves from their 'extremist' brethren, so must REAL Christians--those who follow Christ in LOVE and acceptance and caring/sharing of all peoples. Christ's teachings are what make Christians who they are SUPPOSED to be. Christ came to do away with the awful violent ideas snatched at will from the Old Testament; those false, hate-filled, racist, fear-mongering lines in the Old Testament. You can tell a REAL Christian by their actions of love and inclusion of all peoples. These near-criminal extremists are NOT Christians; they are opportunists, like rats. They are preying(no pun intended)like vultures on the hungry, the uneducated, the unemployed, the disillusioned, the very people who seem to watch the basest of TV reality programs, absorbing this garbage as THE way to behave, requiring more and more adrenaline-pumping inciteful rhetoric and action. These evil instigators will lose their powerful influence after the health care bill passes and the 'boogeyman-health-care-bill-Dems-President' is shown not to be the scary reality these extremists have billed and pumped up their base to be angry about. The evil in this country is not presently in the Whitehouse; it is in the churches and radio shows being led by hatefilled preachers and opinionators who suckled on racist bigotry and are finallly having their chance to spew their forked-tongued poison milk of inhumaneness on the masses. They need REAL prayers.

As a Christian who tries to follow the teachings of Jesus (and fails often, by the way) I always find it distressing to see incidents when scripture is cherry picked to conform to a person's views. This kind of selective quoting did (and does) support the ignorant thinking of groups such as the KKK, as well as other groups claiming that God is on their side.
I would hope that rather than take a knee jerk response that "all" Christians are bad, and that Christianity is evil, people would realize that as with anything there are people who will incorrectly twist things to their point of view.
By conveniently compartmentalizing issues it makes it easy to avoid dealing with them, which seems like another form of ignorance. Which seems, to me, to make it more difficult to contrast one form of righteousness from another..

Whether that means ignoring them or exposing them for what they really are . . . it REALLY, REALLY needs to be done. The problem is the media. They give these ridiculous outbreaks way too much weight . . . all for the sake of sensationalism and viewership/readership. Maybe the media are the real problem? After all, they treated bush like a god and obama like the anti-christ. There are hundreds of opinions, but what the media covers is what people hear and remember.

America Goes Down in Morality?

I recall an Eastern historian who recorded many years ago that America might be or might have been the world power, but that what would be America's downfall is the lack of morality.

Support for use of a biblical excerpt to wish harm upon another individual clearly epitomises growing lack of morality among users. This is the essence of the historian message and downfall for America.

Others have already argued that the wish for harm can be construed as a wish for good. This in my view is the climax of the confusion in which a conscience can no longer guide to what is or what is not a thing to wish for.

Wishing your neighbour a volcano begins with moving your house over onto the Atlantic and staying there for a while, unless you have enough wet blankets curbing the fire approaching while enjoying your neighbours misfortune!

DO I DETECT MORAL OUTRAGE AT CHRISTIANS?

Surely biblical notes on a tee-shirt does not equal the killing of 10 million women and children as witches or the Vatican-Nazi Concordat 1933? This new twist to "preying" is merely joking around - Christian style. Don't you remember the "Heaven (Ice cream) and Hell (chili) parties? Sorry folks. Insanity has a funny side.

The people suffering in the middle...

This may be veiled behind the facade of humor, but believe me this is right from a fascist rightwing, anti-Christian or Xtians movement...They are the polar opposites of the radical Muslims, who want to rid the world of Christianity and western degradation...This faction exists too, is real as real as the American Taliban the RW Xtians...This minority of radical haters, who are so insecure that they won't rest until the rest of us are forced to bow down to their belief systems their God (not very nice Gods either) and the rest of us, around the entire globe suffer under their tyranny...These RW haters, eat all the propaganda by Fox network and others, it feeds their anger and frustration...These people are hooked like a heroin addict on the drama, the emotions, the us against them, conspiracy, hate fest...These people in the US are miserable, materialism is their God, they are on a holy mission, with Christ (the Christ that is opposite of the Biblical Christ, aka the anti- thesis of Christianity) to rid the world of those who are not part of their belief system...I know many of these people, from just opportunists who use biblical quotes to get the support they want to religious fascist zealots, who believe they are helping to ring in the second coming, the end of the world, the rapture, and it's all prophesied to be staged in the middle east...How convenient for the oil companies and their owners... We have it easy in the Western world, compared to Iraq, Afghanistan, (the death and destruction reigned down upon these people for oil is pure simple evil)and other poor souls suffering under different/same tyranny in Gaza, Africa, India, Russia, China etc....It goes on and on, the many oppressed, killed, enslaved, and ruled by the few...Some of us do not need religion to be decent, nice, good and reasonable...Most of us just want to live our lives in peace free from threat of harm, free from fascism and tyranny, we just want to have shelter food and enough to get by on for our families, and selves...This world has turned into a absolute nightmare, hell on earth, everything is unstable, in flux, and so many good people are just coping by acting as if it's all business as usual, all is well...That is until need, suffering, destitution hunger and pain comes to their doors and then are shocked, how could this have happened....????I know that we need to wake up and speak up, we don't need to be evil, hateful or fearful, we need to stand up for our rights as fellow human beings on the planet earth...It is overwhelming, poison is abundant daily in our culture, and the biblical cursing of Obama, is just another bit of poison fed to us everyday...It's overwhelming for anyone who is aware of what is occurring, for self protection we do shut down and live in our little pretend world where this will all go away, good will prevail, superman will save us, God will save us, the aliens will save us....We need to save ourselves, stop making excuses for the real "Ugly Truth"...I keep thinking about the Jews in eastern Europe, who stayed only to be euthanized, tortured, experimented on, treated in the most evil devious way any human could treat another...They stayed because even though there were rumors, and others choose to leave dodge, they stayed because they just could not believe that humans could be as evil as they are and can be...They didn't think that it would be tolerated by their fellow citizens and the world....And I am sure some were trapped by economic realities, where they couldn't get out...The current fascism, evil has spread world wide one way or another, there is no where to run and hide, unless, maybe your part of the elite rich...The situation is dire and this little bit of poison is just another day in helladize....Viva la Revolution for the People in the Middle of this crazy evil....

Also, I haven't read the Book of Revelations lately, but is there anything in there about the Anti-Christ these people fear so much being a MAN? Maybe that's something these "true believers" should consider before marching off in the service of The Shrieking Cow, their heroine and supposed savior.

Found this explanation ...
In Psalms 109, King David, who is a major figure in the Old Testament is lamenting. He says:
For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me,
speaking against me with lying tongues.
They beset me with words of hate,
and attack me without cause.
In return for my love they accuse me,
even while I make prayer for them.
So they reward me evil for good,
and hatred for my love.
For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me? He goes on:
They say, Appoint a wicked man against him;
let an accuser stand on his right.
When he is tried, let him be found guilty;
let his prayer be counted as sin.
May his days be few;
may another seize his position.
May his children be orphans,
and his wife a widow.
May his children wander about and beg;
may they be driven out of the ruins they inhabit.
May the creditor seize all that he has;
may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil.
And then King David says,
Help me, O Lord my God!
Save me according to your steadfast love.
Let them know that this is your hand;
you, O Lord, have done it.
Let them curse, but you will bless.
Let my assailants be put to shame; may your servant be glad.
May my accusers be clothed with dishonour;
may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a mantle.
With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
I will praise him in the midst of the throng.
For he stands at the right hand of the needy,
to save them from those who would condemn them to death.
For those would quote the Bible for their justifications, wouldn’t you think they can do a bit better than this?
The rich irony is that those who have chosen this Bible verse as a slogan clearly have no idea of the context and meaning of that which they quote.
The Bible clearly says the exact opposite of that which they imply.

Media are the problem?

These "christians" need to be put in their place.

If you know one of the people wearing a T-shirt, bumper sticker, on and on, that apparently advocates Presidential assassination in God's name, what are you going to do? The person has utterly defamed the essence of your religious faith and is proud of it.

Prayers and incantations may work in the fragile minds of primitive people, but they don't change things.
What I am concerned about is the violence of the "rightful."

There are no invisible beings, eternal beings, all knowing beings, all powerful beings, life after death, invisible worlds that coexist with ours...
Close down those mythology books, those catalogs of incantations, those comic books and sci-fi novels that start religions.
Start living in this world and understanding its forces if we want to SURVIVE! grow out of it already, you act like cavemen!

These are all exactly the same kind of people.
The only difference is that they differently labelled dog shit beliefs in their heads.

Just as fanatical, just as tied to a totalitarian perspective, just as murderous, just as deluded, identical.

We have it easy in the Western world, compared to Iraq, Afghanistan, (the death and destruction reigned down upon these people for oil is pure simple evil)and other poor souls suffering under different/same tyranny in Gaza, Africa, India, Russia, China etc....It goes on and on, the many oppressed, killed, enslaved, and ruled by the few...Some of us do not need religion to be decent, nice, good and reasonable...Most of us just want to live our lives in peace free from threat of harm, free from fascism and tyranny, we just want to have shelter food and enough to get by on for our families, and selves...This world has turned into a absolute nightmare, hell on earth, everything is unstable, in flux, and so many good people are just coping by acting as if it's all business as usual, all is well...That is until need, suffering, destitution hunger and pain comes to their doors and then are shocked, how could this have happened....????I know that we need to wake up and speak up, we don't need to be evil, hateful or fearful, we need to stand up for our rights as fellow human beings on the planet earth...It is overwhelming, poison is abundant daily in our culture, and the biblical cursing of Obama, is just another bit of poison fed to us everyday...It's overwhelming for anyone who is aware of what is occurring, for self protection we do shut down and live in our little pretend world where this will all go away, good will prevail, superman will save us, God will save us, the aliens will save us....We need to save ourselves, stop making excuses for the real "Ugly Truth"...I keep thinking about the Jews in eastern Europe, who stayed only to be euthanized, tortured, experimented on, treated in the most evil devious way any human could treat another...They stayed because even though there were rumors, and others choose to leave dodge, they stayed because they just could not believe that humans could be as evil as they are and can be...They didn't think that it would be tolerated by their fellow citizens and the world....And I am sure some were trapped by economic realities, where they couldn't get out...The current fascism, evil has spread world wide one way or another, there is no where to run and hide, unless, maybe your part of the elite rich...The situation is dire and this little bit of poison is just another day in helladize....Viva la Revolution for the People in the Middle of this crazy evil....

and have been for some time. What they are preaching is the violent overthrowal of our government, which is a crime according to our Constitution.

Also, I haven't read the Book of Revelations lately, but is there anything in there about the Anti-Christ these people fear so much being a MAN? Maybe that's something these "true believers" should consider before marching off in the service of The Shrieking Cow, their heroine and supposed savior.

Although "God" is a irresponsible incompetent sadistic imbecile, if he didn't kill Bush he won't kill Obama. Even "God" isn't that stupid. Besides, "God" never answers prayers.

He goes on:
They say, Appoint a wicked man against him;
let an accuser stand on his right.
When he is tried, let him be found guilty;
let his prayer be counted as sin.
May his days be few;
may another seize his position.
May his children be orphans,
and his wife a widow.
May his children wander about and beg;
may they be driven out of the ruins they inhabit.
May the creditor seize all that he has;
may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil.
And then King David says,
Help me, O Lord my God!
Save me according to your steadfast love.
Let them know that this is your hand;
you, O Lord, have done it.
Let them curse, but you will bless.
Let my assailants be put to shame; may your servant be glad.
May my accusers be clothed with dishonour;
may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a mantle.
With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
