But is anyone surprised. It seems racism in this nation has gotten worse, not better in the past year. It might be because everyone uses it at every opportunity to the point that people dismiss it.

The beating described almost surely was racism just as 4 whites beating a black would be racially motivated – no big surprise.

So can't the problem of worsening racism be addressed instead of "Rush made another outrageous comment".

One (as poster above noted), this has an intertainment value. It will stir passions and ensure people flock to listen the fat gasbag either to curse him or cheer him. It will bring ratings up and that will increase the money he gets for his drivel.

Two, Limbaugh caters to the lowest common denominator and he knows hicks will like it. He also knows those that detest hicks will pay attention thus putting him in the spotlight.

Wait, at the end there he twists around and says that's how the LEFT thinks?

I think it's Rush and FOX and the rest (I'm looking at you Pat Buchanan) that want to have their racist cantre accepted. Why would anyone accept two boys beating another on a bus? Well, seems Rush thinks the Left (whoever they are) do. But that's silly. Yet Rush wants it to be Ok to bring back Jim Crow race politics.

Well, they are at it again. Twisting meaning and words. After all, Rush Limbaugh, Lou Dobbs, O'Reilly, Beck, and many others in mainstream media have used overtly racist tropes and inference for years now and they are thrilled to have a black President to flog at. Plays to their demographic, I suppose. To go after the Left as racist is just how they deflect from their own bigoted rhetoric. They say, 'I know you are, but what am I?'

Remember, they have the last 8 years or more to defend against with their broadcasts of incredible bigotry towards Muslims. They fear to be called racist because they have so much to answer for!

That's right, the discourse in American mainstream media resembles a school yard fight. And none of them cared how the kid who got beat up felt.

not really shocking actually, or shouldn't be. It's always a good thing when these people show their true selves, but even here, Limbaugh was careful to make his point in such an inept, convoluted way, with enough vague qualifiers and verbal quote marks, that he can dance (waddle) away. Aside from sounding glib, resentful and yes, racist, I was unsure of his meaning by the end of the quote. Even when plumbing the murky depths of his paleozooic id, Rush always tries to leave an out.

A sane society would continue to tolerate Limbaugh, but subject his tedious rants to withering, if somewhat understated ridicule. It's not that hard to put a weasel in his place.

Instead we have the spectacle of the Democratic establishment screaming, "INCOMING!!!!" and diving under something or somebody (i.e., Van Jones) everytime Limbaugh emits another little cloud of noisome swamp gas.

Rush Limbaugh's hate speech should not be ignored. He has millions of listeners. It was hate speech like this in 1930s Germany inflaming people against Jews that incited the Holocaust. The Holocaust was not a one-man job. Hitler had many followers, and many others who knew what was happening and did nothing.

When Imus made a racist remark, he got chased off the air (although he is now on the tiny audience of Fox Business News Channel). When a number of other whites in the media made racists remarks, they got chased off too. Here Rush has said a clearly racist remark, clearly directed at our President. This is a guy that had a very illegal drug habit went to 'rehab' yet still gets paid millions. It is time to chase him (along with Glenn Beck and a number of others wignuts) off the air.

So sometimes I find myself listening to Limbaugh, or Glenn Beck, or Sean Hannity, and I think, "Eh, what's the big deal? These guys are morons! Let 'em talk - they'll be proven wrong."

Problem is, it doesn't matter if they're wrong - millions and millions and millions of people in this country are motivated by their words. Millions and millions of people in this country actually believe that these are the people that "get it." What I can't figure out is whether these radio goons actually have some deal with politicians that they'll make sure social progress never really happens in this country, or if they truly believe the tripe they spew.

As I said in my title, their stupidity might be funny if it weren't so incredibly destructive in this society. The result of millions of citizens maintaining a Limbaugh-Beck-Hannityesque system of beliefs is a society where at least 15% of children live in food insecure households. A society where it is not unusual for an individual to work 50-60 hours for next to nothing and still have no job security, no real benefits, no affordable health care, and no hope for a better future. A society where a huge percentage of the poor and minorities are locked in a prison industrial complex that has systematically eliminated all programs geared toward rehabilitation. A society where children are constantly marketed products that will make them obese, mentally ill, violent, and sick (because it's "profitable," and profit=freedom). A society where people can comfortably refer to children burned alive so that US oil companies can secure resources "collateral damage," and then turn to a 14 year old rape victim entering Planned Parenthood and scream "Murderer!" A society where millions defend the "right" of chemical companies to poison our water, our air, our soil, and our bodies - without telling us, because that would cut profit. A society where our collective future is determined by corporations intent on funnelling as much wealth to as few individuals as possible, ruling elite "lawmakers" who collect bribes and pass legislation granting said corporations the same rights as human beings, and a warmongering military industrial complex that rakes in trillions in profit maintaining chaos and disorder in the third world, slaughtering innocent human beings by the millions, and decimating our environment with weapons tests and oil spills.

So you see, sure, Rush is a blowhard. He's a goon. He's full of shit, and we all know it. But he and his ilk are destroying our future. They're guaranteeing another 100 years of this devastating culture grinding its boot into the throat of humanity. It may very well, in fact, mean the end of humanity altogether in the end, because it is these conservatives who seem to be so completely insane that they cannot even imagine that they (and what superhumans they are, afterall) could possibly need an intact ecosystem to survive. Because on top of everything else, they actually believe that some on-high deity is going to fly down out of the sky right before the shit REALLY hits the fan and whisk them away to paradise (which they deserve, after all, for pointing out that god hates fags, blacks are just ingrates, and jesus christ loves capitalism).

One of the things I cherished about growing up was learning to use my mind to cast off such behavior. But some kids never do learn. They live their lives as if it's one big gang fight.

Yep, in The Color of Crime, a publication from the New Century Foundation, an organization that claims to "study" the impact of diversity. It is, in fact, founded by Jared Taylor, the editor of a white supremecist journal, American Renaissance.

According to the Anti-Defamation League website, the journal "promotes pseudoscientific studies that attempt to demonstrate the intellectual and cultural superiority of whites and publishes articles on the supposed decline of American society because of integrationist social policies."

Apparently, it avoids blatant bigoted remarks and crudeness, which I think makes it more insidious.

I won't even get into whether your stats are right - that doesn't really matter. Let's assume they are.

What your stats don't show is that minorities are far more likely to be victims of violence, that minorities are far more likely to live in impoverished inner cities where legitimate job opportunities are rare, that minorities are far more likely to be subjected to substandard (yet required) public "education" systems, have inferior health care, and live in households with food insecurity. Further, study after study has shown that systemic racism does exist in hiring, criminal justice, and education. Even further, minorities live in a culture that provides a mountain of imagery suggesting that they are less attractive, less intelligent, more violent, and less culturally important than whites. But of course, those facts are irrelevant, right? All that matters is crime stats?

So, let's look at that then. The vast majority of serial killers are white males. The vast majority of child rapists and killers are white males. The vast majority of child molesters are white males. So what, prey tell, does that say about white males? Probably nothing, right?

You know, finally, it's always amusing to see a member of the Euro-American culture - a culture which has arguably commited more violence, more genocide, and more oppression on this planet than any other culture or "race," try so desperately to imply that somehow it is minorities that are "naturally" violent. Give me a break.

Limbaugh and his allegedly conservative colleagues rely on hate. The more hate they can instill, the stronger the effect of their propaganda.

We have heard the conservatives make comparisons to Hitler and the Nazi regime. What I am beginning to see is the similarities between the Nazi propaganda machine and the Neo-Conservatives.

Limbaugh, Fox news, 9/12, etc. are using Orwellian tactics to muddle the issues with hate. Newspeak and jackboots are becoming the American Way and it sickens me.

Alfred Adler correctly found that we all have inferiority complexes to some degree. We work to overcome our inferiorities by developing power—either ‘power over’ or ‘power to’. The simplest, and usually the least rational, is power over. Bosses often use their power to make employees more submissive. But the simplest method of feeling ‘power over’ is by feeling superior to those of another race, a lower social class, another religion, another ethnicity, the other sex, or those with a different sexual orientation. Most people, along with Rush, fit here because it doesn’t take any reasoning power to fall into this belief pattern.
‘Power to’, on the other hand, takes work, effort, and often, education. If not education, at least the ability to reason. Neither the ‘power over’ beliefs nor the ‘power to’ abilities are the exclusive domains of liberals or conservatives. Barack Obama and Colin Powell both are ‘power to’ people—as were Jefferson, Einstein, Edison, and Mother Theresa—and as are Tom Brady, Dan Brown, Bill Gates and the Clintons.
For a much more insightful and complete approach to our psychological motivations I would suggest reading Book 6 of the popular free ebook series “In Search of Utopia” (http://andgulliverreturns.info) And a view of our ethical motivations Book 4 of the same series does an even better job. Rush of course would never read these because his thinking patterns are clearly based on a self centered value system and a ‘power over’ psychological motivation. His status among some similarly intellectually and ethically dwarfed followers affirms his power.

Growing up in the sixties during the civil rights movement, I (a white boy) had to live in the worst part of town and attend a middle school that had roughly 10 whites and 490 blacks. I got into a few fistfights and was called names by other kids. Not all my school mates were racist. Most understood that I was just poor like them. I seemed to have the most trouble when someone got on TV or radio and got people fired up. People like George Wallace for one. By the time I got out of the ghetto, the govt. started busing. I watched black kids get bused to a white school and vice versa. To this day, I don't see much of a change. The only thing really changed was the school bldg. and location. There's still a lot of racism out there, but it comes from the most ignorant of our society. As for Limbo's comment, it's a very foolish one. I wish both sides, democrat and republican, would stop using race as a crutch and an excuse for bad behavior. As long as we cling to racism, we will never progress the way we should. I saw riots in the 60's and they would get ugly real fast. The blow hards and troublemakers somewhat like Limbo and Beck, would always be the ones to run and hide and let the police clean up the mess. We the people, must boycott any advertiser who pays these loudmouths to spout off about racism. The news media and the internet have rapidly become places of racial debate. I suggest people go out an look at the real world. Real people are steering away from racism. Seems like only the racists are the ones that keep the debate in heat. I say, put Rush on a big bus, loaded with armed black panthers on their way to break up a klan meeting. I would just like to see him walk through the projects close to where I live. People like Limbaugh and Beck should be forced to live in a predominantly black neighborhood for a while. They are indoctrinating young white people, much like Hitler did. They are just dregs of society. They need to be taught some manners. A few bricks up side the head might work. They both would be somebody's bitch.

1) homosexuality has been shown to be an inborn trait and a naturally occurring phenomenon, not only in humans but in monkeys and other animals.

2) I am not aware of a study which proves the same of racism. In fact I'm pretty sure racism is taught.

And

1b) Homosexuality doesn't hurt anybody, but

2b) racism does.

The comparison is laughable. Consider the logically-equivalent statement:

“If being able to curl your tongue being inborn is what makes it acceptable, why does racism being inborn not make racism acceptable?”

I don't think homosexuality is acceptable because it's inborn, I think it's acceptable because it's what some people choose to do in their private lives that doesn't hurt anybody.

It's many years since I first heard Limbaugh on the airwaves. Those who would excuse his venom on the grounds that he is just being his usual sarcastic self are lying as much as the rattlesnake himself.
He deliberately dresses up his childish jealousies and bigotries in the pompous language and faked "gravitas" of an experienced senior citizen who has such wide experience of life and its inner workings that absolutely nobody knows more about anything at all than he does.

I'll never defend much of what Rush Limbaugh says, but his tone was sarcastic, not literal. Although I think he is racist in many ways, I don't think this was genuine Rush. I think...and now I have no evidence for this except my own experience...Rush and Glenn Beck and Karl Rove, all chubby, out-of-shape doughboys, were the kids in high school who sucked up to the athletes, jock-sniffers we called them, and instigated violence against "nerds," and other kids in the unpopular crowd safe in the knowledge they'd never face reprisal.

Remember the movie The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2)?" Here's the Wikipedia entry on the character The Toadie:...the gang crier who articulates his occupation with verbally inventive phrases. He is a plump, bespectacled man who masks his cruelty with a jolly facade. He wears a decorated mink stole as a hat and has many ornaments on his clothes. His behavior with Humungus and Wez marks him as a classic sycophant. Toadie takes pleasure in molesting helpless prisoners, but the gang has little respect for him.

When women stayed in the kitchen and "Negroes" knew their place and Dad was king of the house. And the kids were perfect and you lived in your suburban castle and there were no uppity liberals questioning how things were going, and suggesting that maybe your world wasn't as nice as it appeared, that dark things were going on beneath the surface. When you could physically abuse your kids if they misbehaved and knock your wife around if you felt like it. That in those pre-Medicare days old people died because they couldn't afford to go to the hospital. That women had no birth control choices, which was just fine because it further kept them in line. That women had only three professions open to them: teacher, nurse, or secretary. That it was ok to mess with other countries and support repressive governments in the name of rampant capitalism. That it was ok to shit on the environment, also in the name of "free enterprise". Where you could go to church and get reassurance the God was on America's side and that those who were poor or minority or lived in a "ghetto" it was due to moral failings on their part.

This is the world that Rush and his followers are stuck in. This is the world they want to go back to. This is the world view they have as an answer to everything. And this is the reason Conservatives are becoming increasingly irrelevant for today's world, because--in the end--they really have no answers.

Limbaugh turns my stomach. It literally makes me feel physically unwell, as well as soul-sick, to hear him. But the thing that makes me even more unhappy these days is the constant hysteria and mischaracterization coming from both sides of the political spectrum. No one is credible, so you might as well go with the ones who reflect your own prejudices. The headline here is either deliberate mischaracterization, or just being willfully obtuse. The comment came in the context of Limbaugh saying sarcastically that not only was the attack racially motivated (contrary to police conclusions), it was PROPER that it was racially motivated. After all, the white kid had provoked the attack by merely being on the bus, that he was invading the space of the black bus riders. That the white kid shouldn't even have been allowed on the bus -- we should have segregated busses so whites won't invade black space and provoke these justifiable attacks. It was sarcasm and in Limbaugh's mind a parody of what he claims liberal thinking amounts to. This is of course still a disgusting and poisonous little speech, but he never made any serious call for segregated bussing. You destroy your credibility with this kind of stuff, and we really need a credible left, guys.

After reading this article I went to the media matters link first and then I went to his site and read his transcript for comparison. Two very different pictures emerged, it was pure sarcasm on the state of race relations today and I think most people who read the "full transcript" would agree with it.

But from this short transcript, carefully read, I don't think Rush was explicitly calling for segregated buses. He was essentially making the idiotic 'reverse racism' argument, saying that the black kids who beat the white kid were beating him because the black kids thought the white kid was inferior...that in today's America blacks have assumed the 'master' role while whites are the inferiors. Rush puts words and thoughts to the black kids actions by claiming that the black kids must have been thinking 'this beat-down wouldn't have happened if you had been on your segregated inferior white bus.'

Its all very idiotic and quite typical of his rants. Furthermore its an extreme insult to the very real historical and continuing brutality against the black population in this country. It cheapens the historic injustice towards the black-American population just in the same way that comparisons of Obama to Hitler cheapens the horror of the holocaust.

Rush Limb's comments were total satire to make a point:

Background of the point:

1. In the DUke rape case, the first thing that progressives said it was racism and black girls don;t lie; only whites do, That was sub text.

2. Recently, Eric Holder dropped charges against black panthers who threatned violence at the polls. I saw no posts on Alternet on that.

3. Students who have black skin go to the head of the line re college admissions even tho their scores are low.

4. And in the case of medical schools those with black skin with lowest (1 sd or more lower than asians) get into medical school hence exculding asians and whites with very high scores. And worse, those blacks that graduate, a good portion have the lowest scores on licensing exams. And where to they end up: not treating obama, but poor blacks and poor whites.

None of the above is called racism in the MSM nor in the progressive press. Press and obama get excited about a trivial incident re the Gates affair; compare that to the duke rape case which MSM and progressives want to lynch figuratively speaking the white dudes.

One last thing in that famous RAce speech of Obama he cites his grandmother an an egs of racism because she accosted by some black guy and became nerveous about going on buses. Is it not interesting that instead of using his grandmother which I find inexcusable, he should have used Jesse Jackson who made the famous quote that when he hears foot steps behind him, he is relieved when turns around and sees a white face. How do you like those apples.

The upshot is that progressives and MSM are the true racists.

Many progressives and MSM remind of Stalin, Castro: They used the language of love of humanity as do progressives and then piled up gulags and murder of innocents in name of helping manking to a better life. Let me be clear here - I'm actually a pretty jovial person. I'm not sitting around crying about the environment most of the time. But saying I should cheer up about it just seems silly. I mean, perhaps when I say "destroy the ecosystem," that's a bit much, because the reality is that the ecosystem is likely to rebound after humans have disappeared from this planet (though certain types of destruction - i.e. nuclear - could take far longer to repair). But the fact remains that since the advent of industrial civilization (and more specifically, individualistic capitalism and consumption within that civilization), we have seen massive loss of biodiversity, every single waterway on the planet polluted beyond drinkability - in addition to pollution of our air and soil. But if the environmental effects of consumerism and capitalism aren't enough, these effects are produced through a system of wage and literal slavery that keeps millions and millions of people around the world from a decent way of life. It destroys traditional lifeways and makes small subsistence farming in the third world and the US impossible.

No, I won't "cheer up" about the environment, nor will I "cheer up" about the terrible impact Limbaugh and his ilk have on our culture. The problem is simply too serious. Though there is certainly plenty to feel joyful about and which makes life beautiful and worth fighting for.

To Be Fair and Balanced to Rush and to Fox, both of which are determinedly UNfair, as well as unbalanced in every sense of that word, I think, based on the transcript – I don’t care enough to subject myself to Rush’s actual voice – that he was speaking in what he perceives to be the voice of the irrational liberals/white house. He probably used a funny voice. I mean, a DIFFERENT funny voice. Of course, I can’t be SURE that’s what he meant. As always, he is pretty incoherent here.

It's so easy to predict exactly what most of the comments are going to sound like. I'll never understand people on the extreme left or the extreme right. Neither of you look at the REAL issues. It's so much easier to blame the messenger.
Also, as someone who can claim to have once been an anarchist I can tell you that FOX, as a network, is hardly as dangerous as most lefties seem to make it. Why don't you actually watch the network for a few days and sample some shows. Say what you will about Rush, but he's right, pardon the pun. When I was in 3-5 grades in Williamstown, NJ (1970-1973), I would board the bus every morning and get punched in the chest by this black guy, every morning, who'd been left back twice. In other words, he should've been in 5th grade, but he was in 3rd. All just because I was white. And yes, he was jeered on by his fellow blacks. All us whites lived in fear twice daily--Boarding and getting off the bus. I totally agree with segregation. Who knows what this punk was being taught at home?
